One particularly cold Saturday in January, I was supposed to take our dog out for a walk, but it was so cold that I didn't want to go outside. Instead, I just opened the door and let the dog out by himself. I kept an eye on him to make sure he would come back inside. 

However, another neighborhood dog quickly ra n past our house, and our dog sped after to catch him. I hurriedly went to grab my coat so I could follow my dog, and then I rushed outside. Unfortunately, I was already too late, and my dog was nowhere in sight. I walked a few blocks, but I was unable to find him. 

Depressed, I returned home. My mother was standing at the door waiting, and she asked me what had happened. " I know I was supposed to walk our dog, " I admitted, " but I thought he would be able to go outside and come back by himself. Now he's gone and I can't find him anywhere. "

My mother was very angry with me; she said I should have been more responsible. She decided to help by making some signs. The signs read, " Lost: A big black dog. Please call us right away" and she printed our phone number on the bottom. " Okay, Darrell, " she said, as she handed over those signs, "now go post these on all the street posts. "

My sister and I grabbed the signs and we posted them along our street as well as along the surrounding streets. The whole time, I was incredibly sad and worried about our dog. All I could think about was how cold it was and how cold our dog must be. My sister wanted to go home, so I told her I'd walk her home, but then keep looking for the dog myself.

I took my sister home and continued my search alone. 

When I returned, my mother was waiting for me, smiling broadly. 

As Dr Lin Qiaozhi said, "To a person nothing is (precious) than their life... "These words of her give us a look into the heart of this amazing woman, and  carried her through a life of hard choices. 

At age 18, she chose to study medicine instead of following the traditional path of  (marry) like the majority of girls. At age 26, she (hire) as a resident physician in the OB-GYNdepartment of the PUMC Hospital  (immediate) after she graduated. Within six months, she was assigned to  honorable position that usually took four years to achieve. After working for a few years, she was sent to study abroad, where she turned  the offer from her foreign colleagues. She wanted to serve the women and children at home. 

In 1941, she became the first Chinese woman to be appointed as director of the OB-GYN department of the PUMC Hospital,  was later closed because of the war. So she opened a private clinic to help the people in need and charged very low  (fee) and often reduced costs for poor patients. 

The new People's Republic of China saw Dr Lin Qiaozhi playing a key role. Though Lin Qiaozhi never married, she was known as the"mother of ten thousand babies",  (deliver) over 50, 000 babies in her lifetime. 

It was New Year time, and it would be our first New Year away from Alabama. That winter, my mother and my stepfather moved our family to Southern California. My athletic little brother, Paul, was1 about the climate that allowed him to go to the beach2 he wanted. 

I, however, was a fat child with typical southern3 . 

On my first day in the new class, I introduced myself in a low voice. All I said was my name and where I was from. The class burst into4 , "He talks funny. " I was so5 that I went to place a call to Granny Smith after school, who was my biggest6 . But I didn't7 . 

On Sunday evening, the phone rang. It was Granny. She often took advantage of the discounted long-distance8 on Sundays. She said she'd9 a New Year package. Sure enough, it arrived. Surprised at the box, large enough to hold a small refrigerator, we10 it open. The smell of Granny's house filled the room: a11 of fried meat, sausages, furniture polish and decorations. While always filled with12 holiday decorations and homemade food before New Year, Granny's house, in my childhood eyes, was precious and fantastic. 

There were countless tins and containers. We opened them to discover piles of holiday13 . She even included our traditional candy bars. The box was as bottomless as a magic al box. There, 14 all these, was my familiar holiday. 

Every New Year that we spent in California, the15 service could call. Over the years, many treasures arrived in the box. For me, it's always been the best part of the holiday.
