For years, learning to speak Cantonese was not that hard in San Francisco. It is a place where Cantonese speakers from South China have moved for over 150 years. But now, there is fear that the Cantonese language and culture might not survive present social changes. Cantonese is spoken by some 85 million people worldwide. In comparison, there are around 1 billion Mandarin (or Putonghua) speakers.
In Britain, as in the U. S. , most schools that offer Chinese usually teach Mandarin. As a result, many families are struggling to find ways to pass on their Cantonese language and culture. Ceci Pang runs classes for children at Rainbow Seeds Cantonese School in London. "Many parents want their kids to be able to communicate with their grandparents, " she said. "It's just so hard here, there are so few learning resources and lots of parents get upset. That's usually the point the parents come to me. "
In China, there are Cantonese television programs as well as Cantonese announcements on public transport. In Hong Kong, however, Cantonese remains the city's top language. It is used by 90 percent of the population according to an assistant professor at the Education University of Hong Kong.
It is a different story in the U. S. The teaching of Cantonese has decreased somewhat, including in San Francisco, a city that has drawn many Cantonese speakers over the years. The San Francisco school system has Cantonese and Mandarin programs for younger students. But in high school, Mandarin is the only Chinese language available. This spring, some independent Chinese schools are helping to teach the language as Cantonese-speaking communities grow. Aleyda Poe has been managing the Cantonese kindergarten at Merit Chinese School in Plano, Texas, for more than 10 years. Poe put her two sons in the school so that they could learn about Cantonese language and culture. Now, she is helping other families do the same.
(1)、What are the Cantonese speakers worried about?A、Survival of Cantonese language and culture. B、Increasing social changes in San Francisco. C、More and more Mandarin speakers worldwide. D、Less Cantonese speakers in South China.(2)、How does Ceci Pang help to handle Cantonese learning in London?A、By visiting and talking with local families. B、By organizing language classes for kids. C、By reducing Chinese culture teaching at schools. D、By using unlimited online resources.(3)、What is implied about Cantonese learning both in China and the U. S. ?A、San Francisco is a city with the most Cantonese learners. B、Cantonese is learnt by 90 percent of the population in China. C、Learning resources and opportunities are limited in theU. S. D、There are no Cantonese learning programs in San Francisco.(4)、Which can be the suitable title for the text?A、Importance to improve Cantonese learning globally. B、Current status of Cantonese learning overseas. C、A brief introduction to Cantonese learning history inU. S. D、Debates between Cantonese and Mandarin learning. -

One Concern is an AI company (人工智能公司) in California. It is using machine learning and AI to help firefighters. The company hopes its software (软件) can make exact predictions about earthquake damage. It can tell firefighters how to plan for an earthquake and how to do their jobs better when it happens.
Nicole Hu, a technology officer from One Concern, says the key is to feed the computers a lot of data (数据) about an area. The data may include information about homes and other buildings, the natural environment, and the size of an earthquake. The computers then use the information to make predictions about what would happen if there were an earthquake in the area. It then uses data from past earthquakes to see whether its predictions are any good, and changes its predictive models accordingly.
Gregory Deierlein, earthquake engineer at the Stanford University, says one of the most surprising things about the company's software is its ability to make use of data from an earthquake as it's happening, and to change its predictions in real time.
In the past, researchers would collect data after an event and a few years later they'd produce new models, says Deierlein. Now the new models appear in a matter of minutes.
Dan Ghiorso leads the Woodside Fire Protection District (区) near San Francisco, which covers about 32 square miles. He says in the past, when an earthquake hit, he'd have to make educated guesses (based on experience and training) about what parts of this district might be badly damaged and then drive to each place to have a look around. He hopes One Concerns' software will change that. "Instead of driving thirty-two square miles, in fifteen minutes on a computer I can get a good idea of the damage, " he says. "Instead of me taking my educated guess, they're putting science behind the predictive models. "
(1)、What do we know about the software's predictions?A、They can tell people the size of an earthquake. B、They are about when an earthquake may happen. C、They are based on data from many different areas. D、They can be made before and during an earthquake.(2)、What is an advantage of the software according to Deierlein?A、It can make predictions very fast. B、It is sold at very low prices. C、It has many different uses. D、It can be used by common people.(3)、What does the underlined word "that" in the last paragraph refer to?A、How to save people during earthquakes. B、How Ghiorso gets to know earthquake damage.C How to train firefighters to make guesses.
D. How Ghiorso looks at new predictive models.(4)、How does Ghiorso feel about the new technology?A、Worried. B、Uncaring. C、Hopeful. D、Doubtful. -

I love travelling, but it hasn't always been my passion. In my first year of university, I started to travel during the holiday. During the Christmas holiday I went to Paris, and during the spring vacation, I visited Athens and various cities in Italy. I was very excited because this was the first time I had travelled abroad with just my friends. This desire to travel started off simply as a way to have something to look forward to after exams, but I soon discovered how important it is to travel.
On my travels I have had the opportunity to not only experience new and exciting cultures through the art, history, language and food, but also communicate with people who have different views on life. Travelling is a learning experience for both yourself and the people you meet. Some people I met during my travels had never heard of Gambia and it was very delightful to share my African roots with them. When you travel, you will meet people who have different cultural backgrounds and as a result, sometimes your own ideas and opinions might be challenged. It's important to learn to see things from other people's perspectives (观点) and to challenge your own.
This is how I realized that travelling is the realization of home. When you travel you are exposed to a different setting, a different language and a different way of living. All these factors, mixed with a new and exciting adventure, make you realize your own home. Not just the physical location of home, but also your way of life and your outlook.
Travelling is truly an enriching experience and I am always excited about the discoveries that wait for me in my next adventure!

I remember the hot summer when we discovered ice cream sandwiches at the corner store. They were ten cents a piece, a lot of money back then. I don't remember how we came to buy one and taste it, but we were mad after that. Of course, none of us had any money. Whether we rode our bikes, or played ball, or sat and played cards, we talked and dreamed about those soft, creamy sandwiches.
My dad worked nights, coming home to join us for breakfast, and then sleeping till late afternoon. When he came home one morning,I heard the jingle (叮当声) of change in his pants and something ugly slowly came into my mind. All day long I kept coming into the house and listening at his door. When I heard his sleeping sounds, I cracked the door. And there hanging at the foot of the bed were those pants. I slipped in and took a handful of change. It was enough for my friends and me to eat like greedy pigs. And I became a hero to my band of friends.
That went on every day for about two weeks. I had gotten good at slipping in and slipping out, and then ran to my friends and we headed to the store.
One day there was no change in Dad's pocket so I felt hesitated a moment, then took out two whole dollars. I had been okay with taking the change, but those dollars made my face hot. Even before we began enjoying sandwiches, my stomach felt sick. The importance and joy I had felt buying for my friends was gone. If Dad knew what I had done, he'd kill me.

Friendships can end. You may be feeling sad about your friend moving away. There are many reasons that a friendship may come to an end. Whatever the reason is, here are some ways to cope with your loss.
There is no need to blame yourself or the other person for your friendship ending, unless you want to hang onto the pain of losing your friend for the rest of your life. Blame, anger, and regret are traps that keep you from moving on after a relationship ends.
Create new habits and routines. When a friendship ends, old habits die hard sometimes. You can try to find new social activities, hobbies, and sports activities. They can keep your mind occupied, improve your mental and physical health and create new social connections.
One of the most important things to do when you're letting go of someone you care about is to give yourself-as well as the other person-time and space to deal with the grief of a lost friendship. You both will need time and space to figure out how to live independently and find new interests and activities.
Set new personal goals. Set some goals that you want to reach and then make a plan to achieve each of those new goals. However, make sure that the goals you set are for you and you alone. Goals set just to spite(怨恨)someone else won't help you move past the pain of the relationship ending.
A. Give yourself time and space
B. Avoid playing the blame game.
C. Avoid feeling sad about losing a friend.
D. You need new habits to replace your old ones.
E. Or perhaps you were the one who moved away.
F. So don't set a self-improvement goal just to get back at your friend.
G. However, constant reminders of your old friendship can make letting go really hard.

A digital footprint is a record of a person's online activity, and it's becoming more common for companies to perform social media checks before hiring people, Business News Daily reported.
When posting on social media platforms, some students don't think enough about how it could affect them in the future. Sometimes students post reckless(鲁莽的) content to their social media profiles without considering the potential consequences: They could be creating a damaging digital footprint that may prevent them from getting hired.
Before determining who to hire, 70 percent of companies screen potential applicants and look at their social media, with 18 percent of employees losing their job due to their social media posts, according to a September 2022 study by CareerBuilder, a company that helps employers hire in the United States. "Sometimes some people's social media tell a lot more about somebody than an interview," said Rithika Mothukuri, a senior media studies and production major.
A 17-year-old lost out on a job opportunity after the company performed a background check and saw her videos on TikTok, Buzzfeed reported. Many of the videos shared overly personal stories, which was enough to cost her a job.
Therefore, students should ensure a search for their name doesn't surface inappropriate content because even one unprofessional post could potentially ruin job opportunities. They should perform a digital declutter if there is such content though it may be very challenging to do that. So the most important is to refrain(避免)from posting content that contributes to a negative image in the first place.
"I never had anything controversial or something that could get me fired from a workplace or school or something, but there are many cases of that happening and we should be learning from their mistakes ,"said Kieran Mc Carney, a junior social work major.
While having a clean digital is important, it's also important that students avoid doing anything that can be considered inappropriate in their real life. In this way, even others cannot post inappropriate images or videos of them on social media.
(1)、What problem is discussed in the second paragraph?A、Students have too many reckless behaviors in life. B、Social media platforms could harm students' future C、Too much inappropriate content is present on social media. D、What students post online may damage their images.(2)、Why does the author mention that September 2022 study conducted by CareerBuilder?A、To recommend a way of understanding people. B、To show interviews have become less important. C、To show most companies consider social media content. D、To prove companies are cautious when hiring people.(3)、What does the underlined word "declutter" in Para-graph 5 mean?A、Clear-up B、Add-up C、Check-in D、Take-over(4)、Which of the following statements shows the author's opinion?A、Content founded on social media platforms is very reliable. B、Students should avoid inappropriate behavior in life. C、Companies shouldn't care about people's personal life. D、Students should stop posting anything on social media. -

When Richard Oswald was growing up in northwestern Missouri in the 1950s, his dad had a firm rule: Don't plant corn until mid-May. But that rule has become a relic of the past. In Rock Port, a small farming community near the Nebraska border, the growing season now begins more than a month earlier.
That's not surprising. Across much of the US, winter is not as cold as it used to be. The four warmest Januaries on record have all occurred since 2016. In Missouri, winters are about 4 degrees hotter on average than in 1970-and farmers are starting to feel the effects.
As the planet continues to warm, cold winter weather will become less common, said Amy Butler, a re-search scientist studying climate variability. "However, less cold does not mean never cold. " Butler said. In the past decade, Liz Graznak's organic vegetable farm near Columbia, Missouri, has endured increasingly extreme swings in weather. "We don't get a couple of inches of snow; we get 18 inches of snow all at once and then in five days, it' s 70 degrees again. "Graznak said. "We don't get a couple of inches of rain; we get a 12-inch downpour in the span of 24 hours. That's devastating(毁灭性的)to a vegetable farm. "
To help protect her crops, Graznak has built four large greenhouses on her property in just over a decade. Inside, she's able to grow delicate, high-value crops, including flowers, lettuce and spinach.
But these greenhouses come at a steep cost. Nearly seven years ago, Graznak spent more than $18,000 to build a greenhouse and since then, the price has more than doubled. "When I think about these costs, in my brain, I say, 'OK, how many heads of lettuce is that?'"She said. "I know I can sell a head of lettuce for $4, so how many heads of lettuce do I have to sell to be able to pay for that greenhouse? And that's a lot of lettuce. "
(1)、What does the author want to show by telling Richard Oswald's story?A、New farmers should learn to farm on their own. B、New farmers aren't as experienced as old ones. C、Following traditional farming rules is essential. D、Climate change is changing farming rules.(2)、What did Liz Graznak experience in the past decade?A、Many extreme weather events. B、A winter without any cold days. C、Less snow and rain on the whole. D、More stable temperature than before.(3)、What can be inferred from Liz Graznak's words in the last paragraph?A、The profits of her farm have increased. B、She has lost hope in the future of farming. C、The cost of farming has greatly increased. D、Budgeting is important in modern farming.(4)、What would be the best title for the text?A、Farmers in the US are troubled by floods B、Farmers are worried about the future of farming C、Farmers are feeling climate change's effect in the US D、Farmers are turning to greenhouses due to climate change -

Jim stared at the ground and sighed in disappointment. Players from the opposing team raced past Jim, celebrating their shocking victory. They'd scored the game-winning goal just seconds before the end of the game.
"Just one word to describe a loss like that, " Jim mumbled to his teammate Devin.
"Terrible!" Devin sighed. "It was a tough one. " He trotted (小步快跑) toward the middle of the field to shake hands with the winning team. Jim walked slowly behind Devin. He unhappily slapped hands with the winners, then stopped to shut his eyes as the autumn air cooled his sweaty face.
"Terrible, " he repeated to himself as he sat on the bench and pulled his jacket on. "Let's get some hot chocolate and watch the next game, " Devin said. There were eight teams in the YMCA league, so games would go on all morning. "Sorry. I'm heading home, " Jim said, "I've had enough soccer for today. "
As he reached the gate, Jim glanced back to see the next two teams take the field. They were jumping and shouting, excited to play. "That was us a little while ago, before we were discouraged. " Jim thought.
So why we lost the game at last? Jim asked himself. How did such a well-played game end up with such a terrible result? It was still clear in his head: Jim had the ball deep on the Jets' side of the field, looking for Devin or another teammate to pass to. His team had outplayed the Jets for most of the game, but failed within the last seconds.
Jim let out a deep breath. The morning was growing warmer. Perfect for soccer. Jim looked back toward the field. He couldn't see it, but he could hear the excited voices as the game continued.
