In July 2020, Rex and Britnee Smith realized their two pet dogs, Jack and Jill, were no longer in their fenced backyard in Little Rock Arkansas. They went from door to door in their neighborhood, putting up posters, reaching out to animal shelters(收容所) and vets' offices and posting on social media. It was a sad time for the Smiths, especially for their 5-year-old daughter, who had a special feelings with the dogs. 

Eventually in December, the Smiths and their two children had to move about 300 miles away to McKinney, Texas. They still sometimes received calls from shelters or got pictures of dogs that could be theirs, but Jack and Jill were never founded. While the Smiths had heard stories about dogs being found and returned to their owners via social media, they never expected that to happen to them. 

Then in late July 2023, the Little Rock Animal Village called Rex to inform him that Jill had been found. He immediately called Britnee, who cried tears of joy. Britnee was a little nervous as they drove to pick up Jill, worried that she wouldn't remember them or had changed to be more aggressive(好斗的). But that wasn't the case. 

"It's like she never left us, "Britnee recalled. "She came right into our arms. "The Smiths said they were unsure what happened to Jill in the three years away, although she'd been found just a few blocks away from their old house. "We wish she could talk, "Rex said. "We have so many questions to ask her. "Jill was overall health y but had suffered some scratches(刮伤). Her paws were raw(发红疼痛的), likely from the 37.8 degree Celsius heat in Arkansas.

The Smiths immediately too k her to the vet(兽医) and dog spa, where Jill had her nails cut shorter. her teeth brushed and her hair combed. 

Now they're still on the lookout for Jack. 

One particularly cold Saturday in January, I was supposed to take our dog out for a walk, but it was so cold that I didn't want to go outside. Instead, I just opened the door and let the dog out by himself. I kept an eye on him to make sure he would come back inside. 

However, another neighborhood dog quickly ra n past our house, and our dog sped after to catch him. I hurriedly went to grab my coat so I could follow my dog, and then I rushed outside. Unfortunately, I was already too late, and my dog was nowhere in sight. I walked a few blocks, but I was unable to find him. 

Depressed, I returned home. My mother was standing at the door waiting, and she asked me what had happened. " I know I was supposed to walk our dog, " I admitted, " but I thought he would be able to go outside and come back by himself. Now he's gone and I can't find him anywhere. "

My mother was very angry with me; she said I should have been more responsible. She decided to help by making some signs. The signs read, " Lost: A big black dog. Please call us right away" and she printed our phone number on the bottom. " Okay, Darrell, " she said, as she handed over those signs, "now go post these on all the street posts. "

My sister and I grabbed the signs and we posted them along our street as well as along the surrounding streets. The whole time, I was incredibly sad and worried about our dog. All I could think about was how cold it was and how cold our dog must be. My sister wanted to go home, so I told her I'd walk her home, but then keep looking for the dog myself.

I took my sister home and continued my search alone. 

When I returned, my mother was waiting for me, smiling broadly.
