Four years ago my sweet mom went to be with her Lord (God). She did it her way.
I got the call at work, and I headed home quickly. Mom and Dad lived on a small farm that they had owned since I was seven. I hated going there every weekend. There was nothing for a young girl to do but watch the one station on the old TV set, if the weather allowed reception.
My mom, on the other hand, loved the peace and quiet of the land and loved to work in the garden among her flowers and vegetables. The place was simple, with no indoor heat. We had a big wood stove in the kitchen that did its best to heat the little farmhouse, but it always seemed cold and too quiet to me.
In the evenings, my mom and I would sit for hours singing in the little kitchen. I sang the melody and Mom harmonized (用和声唱). Her favorite song was "Moon River" and we sang it over and over. Mom told me stories next to the radio and there was one song I particularly loved called "Ivory Tower".
As time passed, I had my own children and went to visit the farm every week or two. The kids loved the farm and the tractor rides with my dad. Me, well, I still hated the silence of the farm. While my mom loved to sit at her kitchen table and look out at her garden and flowers and retell all the old stories, I missed the hustle and bustle (喧闹) of my life at home. But I sat there listening quietly as she reminisced.
Now, I sat back in the silence and the silence was deafening so I finally leaned over to turn on an old radio. Music always comforted me.
My heart skipped a beat. "Moon River" was playing on the radio. I sat there with a tear running down my cheek, as I listened to every familiar note.

Scientists may have found a way to reduce shortage of type O blood.Type O is the kind of blood that hospitals most often need. What the researchers are testing is an easier way to make type O blood out of other kinds of blood.
There are four main kinds of blood. Most people born with one of these four: Type A, Type B, Type AB or Type O. Type O can be safely given to anyone. So it is commonly used when a person is injured or sick and has to have blood.
Type O is the most common blood group. But the supplies of it available in hospitals and blood banks are usually limited. This is because of the high demand for it.Type O blood is used in emergencies when there is no time to identify the patient's blood type.
Giving A, B or AB to someone with a different blood type, including O, can cause a bad reaction by the person's defense system.Their immune system can reject the blood. This immune reaction can be deadly.
The differences among blood types are linked to whether or not red blood cells contain certain kinds of sugar molecules (分子).These molecules are found on the surface of the cells. They are known as antigens (抗原).These antigens are found with type A, B and AB blood but not with type O.
More than twentyfive years ago, scientists found that the antigens could be removed to create what they called universaltype cells. They could be removed with chemicals called enzymes (酶).But large amounts of enzymes were required to make the change.
Doctor Henrik Clausen of the University of Copenhagen in Denmark led the study. The next step, he says, is to complete safety tests. The team is working with the American company ZymeQuest to test the new method. If it meets safety requirements and is not too costly, it could become a widely used lifesaving tool to increase the supply of universal blood.
(1)、How do scientists deal with the problem of lacking type O blood?A、Hope more people to donate type O blood. B、Make the most of the present type O blood. C、Develop new ways of using type O blood. D、Make type O blood out of other kinds of blood.(2)、What make people have different kinds of blood?A、Sugar molecules in red blood cells. B、People's different living conditions. C、People's various immune systems. D、The variety of people's cells and genes.(3)、What can we infer from the passage?A、Type O blood can be safely given to anyone. B、Antigens could easily be removed to create universal blood. C、A Danish company wanted to involve itself in studying blood. D、The new method is not safe enough to be put into use in hospitals now.(4)、What is the best title for the passage?A、Four Different Kinds of Blood B、A New Way to Make Type O Blood C、The Latest Research on Blood Type D、Find the Proper Type of Blood -

First, I went to the Tower of London, and I want to say that it is a very interesting historical place. I found out that a long time ago, it was a prison. Later it became a castle for the royal(皇家的) family. Or maybe it is the reverse; I'm not sure, but later they left this place and lived in Buckingham Palace and Kensington Palace.
I also enjoyed visiting the House of Parliament and Westminster Abbey, two very popular places for tourists. They are very old and beautiful. The Abbey is built in a kind of Gothic style; it is fantastic.
In London, you can also enjoy nature. There are many parks such as Hyde Park, Green Park, and Holland Park. These parks are wonderful green, quiet places where you can relax and escape the noise of the city.
Trafalgar Square is a popular place for students and other young people. You will find lots of pigeons (鸽子) there. If you have time, you can feed them and they will be very happy. You can buy special food for them, but be careful! Tons of birds are going to surround you if you feed them.
Another very special place in London that I like is St. Paul's Cathedral which was designed by Sir Christopher Wren. I also was impressed with the museums in London. They're very popular. I found them interesting because you can learn about the history of England.

14、 第二节 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
One day my grandfather gave me a gift——a piggy bank. It had an opening through which one could put money in, but the opening was not big enough to reach in and get the money out. The only way to get at the money was to break the piggy bank open. My grandfather explained that was the whole idea:the piggy bank would help save my money so that, at the end of the year, I might have enough for that bike I dreamt about. He asked if I would put some of the money he gave me into the piggy bank. I agreed immediately and promised that I wouldn't break it open until I could afford my dream bike.
Whenever he gave me a little bit of money, he would say, "This is for spending. But you can save some and put it in the piggy bank if you want to save it up. "When he gave me larger amounts, it was clearly for saving in the piggy bank. For some time, this worked fine. I loved shaking the piggy bank and hearing the sound of the coins. As it became heavier, I grew more excited, dreaming about buying my new bike, and all the adventures I could have on it.
Whenever I wanted to take some money from the piggy bank to buy delicious ice-creams or beautiful pens, I would imagine riding my bike on the street, and thinking of that, my thoughts about ice-creams or pens went away. So for almost six months, I only put money into the piggy bank without taking any out. I thought I wouldn't break my piggy bank for anything. But one day something unexpected happened. I saw a piece of news on the television that a serious earthquake(地震) had happened in a nearby province. As many houses were destroyed, a lot of children became homeless. Seeing their shabby clothes and crying faces, I was sleepless that night.
注意:续写词数应为 80个左右;
I knew I should do something
He continued, "My dear grandson, you deserve that bicycle. As a bonus, let's buy that bike together now. ""Thank you, Grandpa. "I was overwhelmed with happiness.

We still don't understand the influence of the mind's power over the body, no r do we understand why there should be such power. All we can say for certain is that the mind does have power over the body in very many different ways.
If a man is told that he is at the North Pole and he believes what he is told, he'll show physical signs which suggest that his body is reacting as though he were at the North Pole. He'll go pale and shiver with cold. When the film Lawrence of Arabia was shown, cinema managers around the world reported that the sales of ice cream rocketed. The endless desert scenes had made the moviegoers feel uncomfortably hot.
Hypnotists(催眠师) use the power of the mind over the body in order to use their influence. The hypnotist must only make the patient believe that something is true, and the patient will act accordingly. For example, if he convinces the patient that his arms are as heavy as lead(铅), then the patient will be unable to li ft his arms; if he convinces the patient that a piece of ice is a hot iron and he then touches the patient's skin with the ice, a blister(水泡) will develop. The body will react to the suggestion and not to the reality, and signs of a real burn will appear.
(1)、What would people probably want when watching a film about the North Pole?A、An ice cream. B、A cold shower. C、A hot drink. D、A hot iron.(2)、What may a hypnotist be able to control?A、Patients'bodies. B、People's minds. C、Patients'diseases. D、People's movements.(3)、What does the underlined phrase "the reality"refer to?A、A real burn. B、A hot iron. C、The touch of ice. D、The body's reaction.(4)、What may be the best title for this passage?A、Mind and Body B、Physical Signs C、Research on Mind. D、The Power of the Mind -
