We all love butterflies. Their beautiful wings attract us, and their presence lights up our garden. Well, that's our view of butterflies, but have you ever wondered what plants think of them?
The butterflies' eggs lie on the underside of the leaves. The eggs themselves don't damage plants. However, upon coming into contact with the eggs, the plants become oversensitive. It means that once a plant recognizes a pest, it will cause death in the contacted plant part. When these dead leaves or partial leaf parts break away from the plant, the eggs on them fall off. Along with the hypersensitivity response, plants also produce something special, which can attract animals to eat the eggs, thus preventing damage in the future.
After the baby butterflies come out of their eggs, the caterpillar (毛虫) stage begins. Most caterpillars feed on the leaves of the plants, damaging some of the plants in your garden. Incredibly, they are major plant pests that bring about major losses to farmers. The next stage is pupa (蛹). The caterpillars begin their change into an adult. They don't depend on the energy that the leaves provide. Finally, they become adult butterflies that have wings and move from one plant to the other. They feed on sweet liquid produced by flowers.
While on their search for food, the butterflies carry pollen (花粉) on their body. They are key pollinators that place pollen from one flower to another in ecosystem. Plants that have flowers will create some special features to draw these pollinators' attention. Certain plants have flowers giving off smells that can charm butterflies when they are looking for a mate. Some plants even have flat flowers to assist butterflies when landing.
Butterflies aid in pollination during their final adult stage. Thus, they change into beneficial insects to plants. This change makes butterflies an important friend of plants, despite being a hated enemy in previous life cycle stages!
(1)、How does a plant respond to butterflies' eggs?A、It tries to get rid of them. B、It tries to appeal to them. C、It grows a little better with them. D、It protects them from being eaten.(2)、When do butterflies cause the greatest damage to agriculture?A、In the period of egg-laying. B、In the period of caterpillar. C、In the period of pupa. D、In the period of adult.(3)、What does the author intend to do in paragraph 4?A、Describe the process of pollination. B、Stress the importance of pollination. C、Explore how adult butterflies develop. Landscape architect Kotchakorn Voraakhom has designed a new green roof on the Rangsit Campus of Thammasat University, about 25 miles north of central Bangkok, Thailand. Her imaginative work challenges the common thinking that urbanization has a negative impact on the planet, whether flooding, excess (过度的) energy use, disrupted (扰乱) biodiversity or the heat island effect.
The 236,806-square-foot structure, which opened in December 2019, includes a floodwater management system and Asia's largest rooftop organic farm. It combines modern landscape architecture with traditional agricultural knowledge, creating a green and friendly environment.
The green roof, containing an H-shaped landscape, looks like a futuristic hill with a brick building beneath it. The hill features a complex pattern of zigzagging terraces (之字形梯田)of planted beds, leading all the way down to the bottom. When rainwater hits the roof, it flows down the zigzags while being absorbed by the soil in the beds. The excess water is directed into four storage ponds—with a capacity of up to 3 million gallons. The process slows down the flow speed of rainwater runoff compared to a normal concrete rooftop. This keeps the area from flooding during heavy rains.
The roof's terraces are filled with organically grown crops, including a drought tolerant variety of rice, many local vegetables and herbs. The farm can supply the canteens on campus with a large amount of rice, herbs and vegetables a year. The food waste is composted (把……制成堆肥) to fertilize the farm, and water from the storage ponds is used to water plants, creating an entirely localized and circular system.
The farm serves as an outdoor classroom and a source of local jobs, too. Farmers offer workshops on sustainable agriculture and nutrition as part of the university's sustainability curriculum. "Students and community members are invited to participate in seasonal seeding, harvesting, and so on," says Voraakhom. "The urban farm is training a new generation of organic farmers with real-world skills. It also promotes a sense of community."
(1)、What can we say about Voraakhom's work?A、It's short-lived. B、It's creative. C、It's demanding. D、It's time-consuming.(2)、Why is the rooftop designed to be zigzag?A、To store more water. B、To slow the speed of water flow. C、To plant diverse vegetables. D、To make it look more attractive than other buildings.(3)、What can be inferred about the farm from paragraph 4?A、It uses food as fertilizer. B、It improves students' lifestyle. C、It benefits the environment. D、It produces vegetables and fruits.(4)、What does the author want to show by mentioning the outdoor classroom?A、Students can learn hands-on knowledge on the farm. B、Farmers working on the farm can become professors. C、The farm prevents government from offering people jobs. D、The farm harms the relationship between university and community. -

Orla Walsh was not exactly an example of good health. Back in 2014, the 25-year-old then was fully occupied with her work and graduate study in Dublin, mostly eating on the go. "I was feeding on quick, easy food like sandwiches," she said. "I stayed up a lot and the gym was a foreign concept for me for I did not work out at all."
That changed the following year when Walsh needed a convenient, reliable and budget-friendly way to get to and from class. "Driving was expensive, and public transportation in the Irish capital left much to be desired," she said. She turned instead to cycling.
At first, Walsh was doubtful. "I didn't want to wear the same suits like other riders because it looked strange for me," she joked. But as soon as she gave it a go, she was spellbound. The six miles she had to cover on her commute (上下班往返) each way didn't seem like so much. "I can't believe how quick and easy that was," Walsh said. "The more I cycled, the easier it got, and I started getting faster. I think what I enjoyed the most was the freedom the bike gave me."
In early 2016, she took the next step and joined a local cycling club, where she took part in long group rides. But something incredible was happening at the same time. As her weekly mileage (里程数) increased, her unhealthy habits fell by the wayside. She cleaned up her diet and cut back on burning the midnight oil. "I gradually got rid of that bad habit after joining in training," she said.
Then, thanks to the encouragement of other club members, she tried open road racing. At first, she was overwhelmed by the competition, getting dropped by other members on every climb. Yet she kept pushing and viewing the failures as learning experience. "I was enjoying the challenges and was more confident," she said.
(1)、Which of the following can best describe Walsh's lifestyle in 2014?A、Simple. B、Decent. C、Unhealthy. D、Fashionable.(2)、What made Walsh turn to cycling?A、Her curiosity about cycling. B、Her wish to break bad habits. C、Club members' encouragement. D、Poor means of transportation.(3)、What does the underlined word "spellbound" in paragraph 3 mean?A、Fascinated. B、Bored. C、Threatened. D、Embarrassed.(4)、How did cycling benefit Walsh?A、By inspiring her to realize her dream. B、B y teaching her to brave challenges. C、By encouraging her to be competitive. D、By pushing her to connect with others. -

Every child has the ability to learn and grow. Mr. White, an education expert, firmly believes in this. On many occasions, he has been telling a true story of his experiences to many young teachers who have just joined the profession.
Mr. White used to work in a remote high school for several years, teaching literature. He was an enthusiastic teacher and that rubbed off on all the children. A little girl named Meredith impressed him the most. The girl was a very well educated girl with a lively mind, a girl with ambition.
The seventeen-year-old girl always wore a bright smile. However, she suffered from a disease and had to use a walker most of the time. People didn't speak to her very often. Maybe it was because she looked different and people didn't know how to approach her. Meredith usually broke the ice with people she met with a big "Hi".
Mr. White was particularly concerned about this student. He hoped that other students could actively approach her, but he never had a suitable opportunity. As a teacher, there are some things that cannot be clearly stated, especially in class when Meredith was present.
In one class, Mr. White gave the students an assignment (作业) to recite (背诵) a poem. He knew that poem was difficult for students to master. Mr. White only made the assignment worth a very small part of their total grade since he knew most of his students wouldn't do it anyway.
In the class, one by one each student failed to correctly recite the poem. Finally, annoyed and half kidding, Mr. White said that the next student who couldn't recite the poem had to do three push-ups (俯卧撑).
To his surprise, Meredith was next! Mr. White was at a loss for a moment, but he couldn't take back what he had just said. After all, Meredith once told him not to have special demands on her.

Want to improve your heart health and you're a man? Evening is better for you. But, ultimately, the study found that there are clear benefits for both sexes to exercising at either time of day.
It seems the answer is: whatever time is best for you!

C. It means you'll continue to burn calories throughout the day.
D. Many of us have more free time compared to later in the day.

Alaska's Mendenhall glacier (冰川) is about 20 minutes by car from Juneau, the state capital. It is one of the area's most popular sites for tourists. But climate change has caused the ice to melt and the glacier to retreat(消退). That means it is losing more snow and ice than it gains. Researchers say the Mendenhall glacier retreated about 800 meters between 2007 and 2021.
Mendenhall pours down from rocky land between mountains and into a lake filled with icebergs. Special signs mark the glacier's retreat, showing where the ice once stood. Experts estimate that by 2050, people will not be able to see the Mendenhall glacier from the visitor centre that was built for it. That is already the case at some other glacier visitor centres in Alaska.
The melting glacier leads to questions for the Alaskan tourism industry. How can tourism leaders help protect the glaciers for visitors to enjoy? And should there be limits on the number of tourists to the area?
Tourism is an important part of Juneau's economy. About 1. 6 million cruise ship (游轮) passengers are expected to stop in Juneau. On especially busy days, 20, 000 people arrive each day to a city that has only 30, 000 full-time residents.
Manoj Pillai is a cruise ship worker from India. He recently got off his ship and went to see the Mendenhall glacier. "The glacier is so beautiful now, " he said. But he wondered what it must have looked like 10 or 20 years ago and what it would look like in the following days.
People have many reasons to want to visit Alaska, and all the visitors help the state's economy. But in Juneau, tourism officials are questioning whether the city and surrounding areas can deal with so many visitors each year. City leaders and major cruise lines have agreed to a daily five-ship limit for next year. But critics worry that may not do much to reduce tourist numbers because the ships themselves keep getting bigger. Some Juneau residents say they would like one day a week without ships.
(1)、What does the underlined word "it" in Paragraph 2 refer to?A、The Mendenhall glacier. B、The special sign. C、The glacier's retreat. D、The tourism industry.(2)、What is Manoj Pillai's attitude towards the future of the Mendenhall glacier?A、Confident. B、Annoyed. C、Concerned. D、Uninterested.(3)、What conclusion can be drawn from the last paragraph?A、New cruise ship routes will be added in the future. B、Alaska's tourism has lost its appeal to tourists. C、The local government attaches great importance to tourism safety. D、The large number of tourists has brought negative impacts.(4)、Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?A、Climate Change Creates Questions for Alaska's Tourist Economy B、Residents in Juneau Are Anxiously Awaiting a Decision C、The Best Way to Visit Amazing Alaska Is by Taking a Cruise Ship D、The Glaciers Are Disappearing, Changing the Face of Alaska -

Students of United States history often learn that Plymouth Rock in Massachusetts and Jamestown in Virginia were the earliest settlements in North America. But more than 50 years earlier, the Spanish had settled in the far northeastern corner of Florida in what is now the city of St. Augustine.
The Spanish controlled St. Augustine from 1565 until 1821, except for a brief period of English rule between 1763 and 1783. St. Augustine became part of the United States in 1821when Spain turned its Florida territories, which were too costly for Spain to keep, over to the United States.
Today, St. Augustine is a small town, covering 27. 7 square kilometres and has a population of about 15, 000. And even with centuries of Spanish rule, it is difficult to see Spain's influence on St. Augustine because most of the buildings from that time are long gone.
The oldest structure in St. Augustine is Castillo de San Marcos. It is a fort (要塞) built by the Spanish in 1695 to protect against English attacks. The fort is now a national monument.
The city was once a popular place for wealthy Americans to escape the difficult winters in northern US states. In the 1870s, businessman Henry Flagler, a founder of Standard Oil, decided to build three world-class hotels for rich visitors. They were Hotel Ponce de Leon, Hotel Alcazar, and Hotel Cordova. But the rich did not stay long. Within 20 years, the rich discovered that Palm Beach on the other side of Florida had even better weather.
Today, Hotel Ponce de Leon is Flagler College and Hotel Alcazar houses city offices and a museum. Only Hotel Cordova, the smallest of the three, is still a hotel but is now called Hotel Cas a Monica.
Still, visitors remain a main source of income for the city. More than three million people visited the St. Augustine area between July 2021 and June 2022. Many stay for just the day, but the city hopes to bring in even more visitors as St. Augustine becomes more widely known as the oldest continuously occupied US city.
(1)、What is the function of Paragraph 1?A、To introduce the topic of the article. B、To show St. Augustine's importance. C、To test the readers' knowledge about Florida. D、To draw the readers' attention to Spanish.(2)、Why did Spain turn its Florida territories over to America?A、The cost of governance was too high. B、The British attacked it. C、It intended to weaken British rule in North America. D、It wanted to increase the influence of the US.(3)、What was Henry Flagler's purpose in establishing high-end hotels?A、To preserve Spanish architectural style. B、To serve as various functions. C、To improve the city's defense capabilities. D、To provide services to the wealthy.(4)、What can we infer about St. Augustine?A、Many wealthy people take a fancy to have a trip there. B、It was under the control of Spain for over 300 years. C、Historical characteristics are the focus of tourism development. D、Most of the Spanish buildings and businesses can be seen. -

Actually, sometimes people die in the accident, for which I am very sorry. " With 140 people in her station, Renee is one of the only three women, but that doesn't bother her.
