I joined the coast guard because I wanted to help people. Hovercraft (气垫船) are rare and special. They've been discontinued in most commercial operations because they're so expensive to make, but when it comes to search and rescue, they're priceless.

From far away, a hovercraft looks like a normal boat. But if you look under its skirt, the craft is not touching the water —it floats on a cushion of air. That cushion allows us to travel over everything from water to muddy land — and even break through ice. We do all of that as a 70-tonne machine, going a maximum of nearly 120 kilometers per hour. These features allow us to rescue a large number of people quickly, get onto land, and get someone into an ambulance far easier than with any other device I can think of.

The advantages of hovercraft can also make them difficult to handle. We've got a massive vehicle moving fast, sometimes in a thick fog bank up a narrow river. During assignments on other coast guard ships, I had 20 minutes to make changes to avoid a crash. In a hovercraft, I have 10 seconds. You have to have enough situational awareness to make the right decision every time.

People call us for all sorts of problems: missing divers, on-board fires, or even when they've run out of fuel or had a mechanical breakdown. A container ship could burst into flames. We have a strong network here at the base to help everyone through difficult situations like that. Thankfully, we have captains who train us in a safe environment, but you don't ever get fully comfortable. Anything can throw the hovercraft off—maybe your lift settings are off a little, or the wind blows with a bit of extra weight. After several years operating a hovercraft, I'm still learning. Every one of the captains here agrees: you can drive this thing for 20 years and still be surprised.

The person who set the course of my life was a school teacher named Marjorie Hurd. When I stepped off a ship in New York Harbor in 1949, I was a nine-year-old war refugee, who had lost my mother and was coming to live with the father I did not know. My mother, Eleni Gatzoyiannis, had been imprisoned and shot for sending my sisters and me to freedom.

I was thirteen years old when I entered Chandler Junior High. Shortly after I arrived, I was told to select a hobby to pursue during "club hours" . The    idea    of hobbies    and    clubs    was    perplexing    to    my immigrant    ears, but I decided to follow the prettiest girl in my class. She led me into the presence of Miss Hurd, the school newspaper adviser and English teacher.

A tough woman with salt-and-pepper hair and determined eyes, Miss Hurd had no patience with lazy bones. She drilled us in grammar, assigned stories for us to read and discuss, and eventually taught us how to put out a newspaper. Her introduction to the literary wealth of Greece gave me a new perspective on my war-torn homeland, making me proud of my origins. Her efforts inspired me to understand the logic and structure of the English language. Owing to her inspiration, during my next twenty-five years, I became a journalist by profession.

Miss Hurd retired at the age of

    62. By then, she had taught for a total of 41 years. Even after her retirement, she continually made a project of unwilling students in whom she spied (发现) a spark of potential. The students were mainly from the most troubled homes, yet she alternately bullied and charmed them with her own special brand of tough love, until the spark caught fire.

Miss Hurd was the one who directed my grief and pain into writing. But for Miss Hurd, I wouldn't have become a reporter. She was the one who sent me into journalism and indirectly caused all the good things that came after.

Jenny was the only child in her home. She had a quarrel with her mother that afternoon and she ran out of the house angrily. She couldn't help weeping sorrowfully when she thought of the scolding from her mother. Wandering aimlessly in the street for hours, she felt a little hungry and wished for something to eat, but it was not possible for her, since she had nothing with her. She stood beside a stand for a while, watching the middle-aged seller busy doing his business. However, with no money in hand, she sighed and had to leave.

The seller behind the stand noticed the young girl and asked, "Hey, girl, you want to have the noodles?"

"Oh, yes. . . but I don't have money on me…" she replied.

"That's nothing. I'll treat you today," said the man. "Come in."

Ways to Create Calm in Your Daily Life

Find a park or a small patch (小块地) of great green, or just stick your head out of the window! You have many ways to appreciate nature.

Listen to music. Many people listen to music to calm themselves down. Music actually lifts us out of ourselves. Discover what music works for you. .

Do some activities. Certain activities like yoga and tai chi need quiet focus.  They are good for the body, mind and spirit. Classes are a good place to begin, but once you learn the skills, you can practice anywhere: home, school or even on the road.

Try out some of these ways and you'll soon be practicing "moments of calm".

Many years ago, my dad was facing a serious heart condition. He was unable to do a steady job. He fell suddenly ill and had to be admitted to the hospital.

He wanted to do something to keep himself busy, so he decided to volunteer at the local children's hospital. My dad loved kids. It was the perfect job for him. He ended up working with the seriously ill children. He would talk, play, and do arts with them.

One of his kids was a girl with a rare disease that paralyzed (瘫痪) her from the neck down. She couldn't do anything, and she was very depressed. My dad decided to try to help her. He started visiting her in her room, bringing paints, brushes and paper. He stood the paper up, put the paintbrush in his mouth and began to paint. He didn't use his hands at all. All the while he would tell her, "See, you can do anything you set your mind to."At the end of the day, she began to paint using her mouth, and she and my dad became friends. Soon after, the little girl was sent home because the doctors felt there was nothing else they could do for her. My dad also left the children's hospital for a little while because he became ill. Some time later after my dad had recovered and returned to work, in came the little girl who had been paralyzed and only this time she was walking. She ran straight over to my dad and hugged him really tight. She gave him a picture she had done using her hands. At the bottom it read: "Thank you for helping me walk."

My dad would cry every time he told us this story and so would we. He would say sometimes love is more powerful than doctor, and my dad—who died just a few months after the little girl gave the picture—loved every single child in that hospital.

However, the greatest challenge he faced was to convince people that even though he was a foreigner, he could still treat them  (effective) with TCM. Fortunately, his fluency in Chinese got improved and it helped. In 1997, he became the first foreigner  (receive) a doctoral degree in acupuncture(针灸) from Chengdu University of TCM.

Besides his work, Boubacar has been helping patients in (distance) villages in Sichuan and Yunnan provinces. Due to his contributions in the community, where he has also been helping train village doctors in TCM, today Boubacar is known "China's barefoot doctor" and the "African Norman Bethune".

It all started when I learned to read, or rather, before I learned to read.

When I was two years old, my grandma decided it was time to 1 me to poetry. I didn't understand the words, but my parents said my first complete sentence was the recitation of a poem because my grandma had read it to me so many times that I could 2 it.

Throughout my childhood, I always had a bunch of 3  about who I would become when I was older, like an inventor, a doctor, or a dancer. But these ideas 4  in middle school. I spent a few years wandering 5  through life, having no clue what I was 6  about.

So I worked hard and put my 9 into every essay she assigned. I even practiced 10 in my spare time and brought what I wrote to her for feedback. One day, she said to me encouragingly, "I recommended you to the school newspaper, and you can write for it."

Her words 11 something in me. Suddenly, I wasn't 12 anymore. I had a destination. I'd become a 13 . Doing well at the school newspaper was the first step to get there.

Thanks to the first poem my grandma read to me and Miss King's 14 , now I'm writing for newspapers all round the world. It's still the bottom of the ladder, and I've got miles left to 15 , but at least I've made somewhere.

The Best Ways to Get Good at Any Sport

If sports are something that interests you, it stands to reason that you would want to be good at them. Succeeding in a sport takes skills, and skills take patience and determination. Skills alone may take you far, but you'll never go all the way unless you have the right attitude and team spirit to back it up.

    Join a sports team.

If you want to become a sports superstar, joining a team is a good way to start. Even if your skills are currently low, joining an amateur league will sharpen up your skills. Sports teams are everywhere, and most of them are free to join. If you go to school, you should go for team tryouts when they're happening.

Practice until your skills become second nature.

If you're wondering at what point a skill becomes mastered, it is when you're able to do it automatically and without thinking. This is called the autonomous stage, and it's where you want to be at if you want to play sports competitively. When you're in the fight of a game, you won't have time to think everything through, so practice until it's all automatic, so you'll know you're ready.

Set ambitious but realistic goals for yourself.

Instead, you should take a look at what you are, and figure out where you think you would like to be. Give yourself a suitable amount of time to achieve that goal, and break it down into smaller parts if the goal is especially big.

One of the biggest reasons people join sports teams in the first place is to make friends with new people. Chances are you'll develop friendships with at least some of them. Making these friendships a priority is a good move if you want to become great at sports. You can practice together on your own time. The morale (士气) boost of playing with friends helps as well.

    A. Set your sights wide.

    B. Promote friendships with other players.

    C. Recreation centers are often host to sports teams as well.

    D. This doesn't mean saying you'll be professional within a year.

    E. But if the desire is intense enough, you will do anything to realize your dreams.

    F. Given enough time and repetition, a skill will eventually fall under this category.

    G. However, you need to think about other things if you want to be a good sports player.

    The Christmas Spirit Strikes Again

I always dreamed of making a big surprise of a lifetime. Thanks to a little determination, some luck, and a generous helping of Christmas Spirit, my dream became a reality.

My family is Canadian, although my sister moved down to Australia a few years ago to study. She was graduating just before Christmas, but due to my own scholarly schedule back home, I would be unable to make it down in time for her graduation. She was understandably disappointed, and I felt guilty that I wasn't able to be there for her on this special occasion.

While I was talking to my professor the week before my sister's graduation, she commented, "Well, if you want to go, just go ahead!"I couldn't believe my luck! I nearly jumped for joy. "Just make sure you get permission from administrator(行政主管)," she added. My heart sank. The administration at my school was infamous for denying any sort of time-off requests. I almost didn't bother asking, because I knew it would be a waste of time. But something in me decided to try, just in case. Maybe it was the hope that the Christmas Spirit would somehow affects the administrator at this time of year. When I returned home to check the reply in my inbox, I steeled myself for disappointment. I held my breath, opened the e-mail, and started to read. And re-read, just to make sure I'd understood. Approval? I couldn't believe my luck!

Immediately, I called the airline. Unexpectedly, even during the busy Christmas season, I was able to change my ticket to arrive the day before my sister's graduation. With news this fantastic, I was bursting to tell my sister. But, fingers on the dial(拨号盘), I paused. Wouldn't it be much more fantastic if I could surprise her? What a state of shock she would be in! Slowly a great idea came to my mind. I decided a much more dramatic arrival than just a ring of the doorbell. What if I couldn't arrive in a box?

Managing Time with the Pomodoro Technique

The Pomodoro Technique, one of the most efficient time management techniques, was developed by Francesco Cirill o in the late 1980s.These blocks are separated by short breaks. Each block is known as a "pomodoro", the Italian word for "tomato". Cirillo named the system after the tomato-shaped kitchen time r that he used to track his work time when he was studying as a university student. He developed a habit of doing short blocks of work followed by resting periods. He realized this method could help him work with time instead of struggling against it.

First, choose a task that you'd like to get done. It can be something big, something small, or something that you've been putting off for months. What matters is that you are ready to give it your full attention. Next, set a timer for 25 minutes. Try to spend the full 25 minutes with your complete attention on the task.Sit back, have a drink, go for a short walk, or do something else that is not work-related. Once you have completed four of these 30-minute cycles, treat yourself to a longer break that lasts 15 to 30 minutes.

After trying the Pomodoro Technique, you may want to experiment a little. Some people have found that 90-minute blocks work best, while others might perform better with more flexible periods.Just remember, like many things in life, simpler is often better!

A.It varies from person to person.

B.Cirillo was struggling to focus on his studies.

C.Then, when the timer goes off, take a five-minute break.

D.It uses a time r to break down your work into 25-minute blocks.

E.The Pomodoro Technique is built around a handful of important steps.

F.In 2006, Cirillo published his Pomodoro Technique for people to use for free.

G.In theory, the longer break will allow your brain to get ready for the next round of pomodoros.
