  • 1、Apps and Your Privacy

In today's digital age, protecting your privacy while using apps is important. All apps collect data as you use them. Here are some good tips to keep your personal information safe.

For starters, download apps only from the App Store, not from random websites.

Before you accept an app's terms and conditions, look at what information it's planning to collect and think twice if it's asking for too many permissions. For example, why would a gaming app need access to text messages? You may think it's inconvenient, but it's worth it.

Also, most apps don't need to know your location, but for those that do, you can choose to enable location services only when using the particular app, another smart privacy safeguard.

Don't use your main e-mail address or social media account. This way, if there is a security breach (缺口), your exposure is contained to things connected to that address.

And, of course, use a secure password. This means a long one (at least ten characters) with a mixture of letters, numbers, and special characters—and a unique password for each app. According to security experts, a good trick is to create a memorable "passphrase" by creating a series of random (任意的) words, and then replace numbers or special characters for some of the letters Go ahead and write them down—just store it in a secure location (not your wallet or phone case!).

Finally, remember that privacy is an ongoing concern. Regularly review the apps you have installed and the permissions you've granted them. Stay informed about the latest privacy threats and solutions. By taking these simple steps, you can enjoy the benefits of apps while protecting your personal data.

    A. It's better to be safe than sorry.

    B. How will you ever remember them all?

    C. Why is it so important to protect our privacy?

    D. Moreover, create strong, unique passwords for each app.

    E. Because it can prevent bad software from infecting your device.

    F. Following these four steps will help ensure you're not oversharing.

    G. Sign up an e-mail address just for things like app permissions and e-mail newsletters.

  • 2、Sleep, considered a luxury by many, is essential for a person's health. Researchers have found that lack of sleep and tiredness increase a person's risk of developing severe medical conditions, such as obesity (being very overweight), high blood sugar levels, and heart disease. Now, a new study has found that getting enough sleep is also the key to improving academic performance.

Jeffrey Gross, the university science professor who led the research, was not trying to find the relationship between sleep and grades when he handed out smart watches to the 100 students in his chemistry class. Instead, the professor hoped the devices, which track a person's physical activity, would show a connection between exercise and academic achievement.

While Gross's data showed no relationship between these two factors, the study found something surprising. As the researchers were analyzing their data, they noticed that there was a straight-line relationship between the average amount of sleep a student got and their results in the course's 11 quizzes, three midterm tests, and the final exam.

Even more interesting, it was not enough for students to just head to bed early the night before a test. Instead, it's the sleep you get during the days when learning is happening that matters most.

The time students went to bed each night was similarly important. Those who went to bed in early hours of the morning performed poorly, even if the total sleep time was the same as a higher-performing student. "When you go to bed matters," Gross says, "If you go to bed at 10, or 12, or l at night, and sleep for seven hours, your performance is the same. But if you go to bed after 2, your performance starts to go down even if you get the same seven hours. So, quantity isn't everything."

Perhaps the most interesting was the huge impact that small differences in sleep patterns had on the students' grades. The overall course grades for students averaging six and a half hours of sleep each night were 25% lower than students who averaged just one hour more sleep. Similarly, students who varied their bedtime by even one hour each night had grades that dropped 45% below those with more regular bedtimes.

(1)、What have researchers found about lack of sleep?
A、It can help people lose weight. B、It can make people more likely to get sick. C、It can reduce people's risk of heart disease. D、It can improve people's academic performance.
(2)、What was Professor Jeffrey Gross's original intention?
A、To study the relationship between sleep and grades. B、To investigate the impact of sleep on students' health. C、To prove that smart watches can track physical activity. D、To find out the connection between exercise and academic achievement.
(3)、According to the text, which of the following is correct?
A、The more sleep students get, the better their grades. B、It's the sleep you get during the daytime that matters most. C、Differences in sleep patterns have great impact on students' grades. D、Students who go to bed after 2 am can perform well by sleeping longer.
(4)、What is the main idea of the text?
A、The importance of exercise for students. B、The relationship between sleep and health. C、The impact of sleep on academic performance. D、The benefits of using smart watches in class.
  • 3、Can a robot help speed up Christmas deliveries? The city of Helsinki is finding out. A trial in Finland's capital is using a delivery robot in two neighborhoods to see if this new, self-driving and pollution-free method could help with the holiday stress.

The HeRo robot that is being tested, is a project of Forum Virium, an innovative Finnish company. The trial will be running through the end of December 2023. The goal is to show how packages can be quickly delivered to people's homes with great accuracy even during the holiday season.

HeRo is not just a delivery robot, it's electric and operates without any dangerous emissions, plus it is self-navigating (导航) and talks. The delivery robot was made by the French robotics firm TwinswHeel and uses an interface created by the Finnish company LMAD. The four-wheeled vehicle can carry up to 300 kilograms and can travel up to 20 kilometers on just one charge of its lithium(锂)battery pack. HeRo uses a combination of GPS and onboard sensors(传感器)to run through the city's streets.

HeRo can carry several orders at once. Each order is in a separate locker and customers can open their lockers electronically. In just one hour, the robot delivers packages from a few shops to people in the Ruoholahti and North Jätkäsaari areas. No other delivery service is as fast or as clean.

This isn't HeRo's first appearance on Helsinki streets. From May to August 2023, there was a first phase trial. It carried packages from Würth Center (a place that gives tools and supplies for industry) to nearby workplaces. These trials are part of the international URBANE project. The project wants to find new, green ways to make logistics better for both companies and people. Soon, there will be new trials in cities in Spain and Greece. Using self-driving robots for zero-emission delivery is an idea that should be used all over the world.

(1)、What is the purpose of the trial in Helsinki?
A、To see if robots can replace human delivery workers. B、To find out if robots can speed up Christmas deliveries. C、To test if robots can reduce pollution during Christmas. D、To check if robots can improve the accuracy of deliveries.
(2)、Which of the following is NOT a characteristic of the HeRo robot?
A、It is self-navigating. B、It has onboard sensors. C、It can carry up to 300 kilograms. D、It can travel unlimited distances on one charge.
(3)、What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A、New trials will be expanded to other cities. B、The URBANE project only focuses on Helsinki. C、Zero emission delivery is already widely applied. D、The HeRo robot has been on the streets of Helsinki only once.
(4)、What's the best title for the text?
A、Pollution-free Method Proves Popular B、Robots Are Helping to Deliver Packages C、A Delivery Robot Improves Service Quality D、Helsinki Takes the Lead in Holiday Deliveries
  • 4、At 12, my father decided to take me a trip to France. I had never been out of the country before, so I was very excited. My aunt, my father and I went around with my father showing us all the unbelievable attractions in Paris. None of us spoke much French but we loved the city.

We had taken the subway all over the city and were congratulating ourselves on our understanding of what is honestly a good subway design that is pretty easy to follow. We decided to visit Versailles by train. We chatted happily along the way until my father realized we were far into the French countryside and no one around spoke English.

We reached the end of the line and felt frightened when everyone finally left the train. An old man and his grandchild noticed us and came up to help. He spoke no English, so in broken French we tried to explain. When he finally understood, this great man settled his grandson and showed us to the correct train and then got on it with us.

Later we knew the truth that there was a train transfer(换乘)and he didn't want us to miss it. This kind man rode a train an hour and a half out of his way to make sure that three Americans got where they wanted to be. He refused to let us pay for his ticket. He did it all with a gentle smile and shook our hands gently at the stop. Then with his quiet way, he got on the train to return the way he had come.

What impressed me most was the man and his kindness during the amazing trip. Some Americans think the French are rude for some reason, but I always try to make them change their minds with this story.

    Unclaimed (无人认领的) Treasure

I was on my way to the park when I saw Ollie sitting on his steps. And I was about to greet him when he said softly. "You'll scare him away!" "Who?" I wondered, then I noticed the cutest little bird in the world just perched there on Ollie's shoulder. "He landed on this flowerpot," said Ollie. "And when I bent down to make sure he was OK, he just hopped right onto my shoulder!" I told Ollie that my cousin had a pet bird looks the same as this one, so it must be someone's lost pet.

"Hi," I said softly to the bird. "I wish you could tell us your name." And right then, the bird chirped back.

Ollie giggled. "I don't exactly speak to bird, but I'm pretty sure he just said his name is Blue."

And I know this sounds far-fetched (牵强的), but Blue seemed to understand—because right then, he chirped more!

When Ollie's grandma, Abuela, stepped outside and saw the bird, she was very surprised. Luckily, she knew all about birds, and she gave us a spare cage, the right kind of seed, and lots of helpful advice. She advised us to put flyers (传单) up in our area, post a message on the neighborhood's online bulletin board, and keep checking the Found Animals recording.

That afternoon, Ollie and I made lots of Found Bird flyers. And Blue helped by singing songs while we worked.

"Thank you for filling our home with such beautiful music," Abuela told little Blue. "I'm really going to miss you when you're gone."

"Me too!" said Ollie. "Do you think that maybe we could keep her if no one claims her? I promise I'll clean her cage and change her food and water and do all the stuff you said to do!"

Abuela thought for a bit. "I suppose, maybe, if nobody claims her."

  • 20、Across an average lifetime, we spend roughly eighty-two days brushing our teeth. It's an important step in our daily routine. Newsweek spoke to Dr. Smita Mehra, principal dentist at The Neem Tree Dental Practices, to find out what mistakes many of us are making when it comes to brushing our teeth and what we should be doing instead.

Mistake 1: Using whitening toothpaste every day

While whitening toothpastes are generally safe to use, using them every day or at high levels may have the potential to cause damage. This is because the peroxide (过氧化氢) content in some whitening gels and toothpastes has the potential to cause ulcers (溃疡) if used in high quantities." If you want to use a whitening toothpaste, seek professional advice from dentists.

    Mistake 2:

How many of you eat your breakfast then immediately go to the bathroom to brush your teeth? Actually, dentists recommend that you wait about an hour before brushing your teeth after eating. This is because brushing your teeth right after eating these foods can actually damage your enamel (牙釉质) especially when you eat food that is acid. You are essentially brushing acid in your mouth all over your teeth. Allowing time between brushing and consuming foods allows the saliva in your mouth to wash away any acid.

Mistake 3: Brushing your teeth too hard

But actually brushing too hard can contribute to worn enamel, which may contribute to sensitivity and gum (牙龈) disease in the long run. The best way to brush your teeth to guarantee maximum cleaning and little damage is to brush gently but thoroughly, using a soft brush. Pressure isn't the only thing you need to consider when brushing your teeth.

Mistake 4: Skipping your bedtime brush

While official guidelines recommend brushing your teeth twice a day, many of us consider the morning brush to be the priority. But while your morning breath might feel worse, brushing your teeth before bed is even more important. Never forget to brush before bedtime. In addition, while you sleep, the washing action of your mouth i.e., your saliva also reduces, and therefore not much cleaning happens naturally.

    A. Brushing your teeth after eating acid food.

    B. Brushing your teeth immediately after eating

    C. They will direct you on how often you should be using whitening toothpaste.

    D. Roughly 37 million Americans spend billions of dollars every year on tooth care.

    E. However, many of us are doing it wrong without noticing the potential damage it might cause.

    F. That is the time when all of your dinner goes bad in your mouth and bacteria are having a field day.

    G. Many people assume that by applying more pressure to the teeth, you are getting rid of more bacteria.
