Teacher Appreciation Week arrived in Richmond, but for Katie, it felt like any other Monday — until she found an envelope on her front door. Inside was a note asking her to open her laptop for a surprise.

Curious, she walked to her desk and turned on the screen. A video call started, and Clay, a student she hadn't seen for ten years, appeared with a big smile. He asked if she remembered him. Katie replied that she did and mentioned he had always loved drawing.

Clay said she was the first person who helped him believe in himself. He recalled a moment in class when Katie asked everyone to draw something they were grateful for. While the other students started right away, he just sat there, unsure. Katie came over and gave him a determined look — a small act that made him feel confident. That moment inspired him to show his gratitude. He also remembered how she took the whole class to their first concert, a Blues Traveler show, and how it broadened their world.

Clay then said he had invited someone special to help thank her. The screen switched to a music studio where the lead singer of Blues Traveler appeared, and sang a heartfelt song. He said Clay had told him how much Katie meant to the whole class and that the song was for her. With tears in her eyes, Katie smiled and said, "That is the coolest thing I have ever seen."

After the music, Clay reappeared and told her to go outside. Katie stepped onto her front yard and paused at a decorated truck as a crowd applauded. On a big live screen on the side of that truck, dozens of her former students appeared one by one, waving, smiling, and calling out to her.
