Australia recently declared the koala an endangered species in Queensland, the Australian Capital Territory, and New South Wales (NSW) because of its obvious population decline. In the state of NSW, koala conservation has become a key topic of discussion in the lead-up to the 25 March state election. However, the debate has focused on the expansion of protected areas and ignored the importance of koala conservation on private lands.
The major cause of the koala's decline—in addition to climate change, wildfires, disease, and encounters with vehicles and dogs—is the loss and degradation(退化)of suitable habitat. In response, the NSW Government has expanded publicly protected areas in the state. Over the past 20 years—about three koala generations—NSW has officially confirmed an additional 1.5 million hectares(公顷)of protected land, some of which is high-quality koala habitat.
However, across Queensland, the Australian Capital Territory and NSW, 77% of the koala's range is located on land that is owned or rented by private citizens or businesses, where degradation continues. Between 2003 and 2020, agriculture, forestry and infrastructure(基础设施)development have led to the act of cutting down or burning the trees within 760,500 hectare in NSW, including in regions such as the Cumberland Plain and Liverpool Plains, where koalas are known to live. Such development has reduced the gains made through new protected areas.
The current NSW Koala Strategy adopts a free approach without any restrictions, which leaves private landowners, renters and industry have the power to decide what should be done in much of koala habitat conservation.
An effective koala conservation strategy must include conservation measures in private protected areas, such as payments for ecosystem services, in addition to publicly protected areas. In other words, post-election agendas must strengthen protection of koala habitats on private lands.
(1)、What did the discussion before the state election fail to notice?A、The voice of local citizens. B、The expansion of protected areas. C、The decrease of koala population. D、The koala conservation on private lands.(2)、The decrease in the number of koalas is due to ______.A、the attack of diseases B、the spreading wildfires C、the worsening of living environment D、the constant threats from climate change(3)、What does the author intend to do in paragraph 3?A、Add some background information. B、Summarize the previous paragraphs. C、Introduce a new topic for discussion. D、Offer some advice for the government.(4)、What's the author's attitude to the present NSW Koala Strategy?A、Supportive. B、Disapproving. C、Tolerant. D、Unclear. -

Mariah Galloway has observed her mother and other family members driving a car so many times. She knew just what to do when she was involved in a scary incident right in her own driveway. The trouble began one day when the 8-year-old's great-grandmother, Patricia Lynch, picked her up from school and brought her home.
Patricia had done this many times, but on this day, a moment of inattention nearly turned deadly. While Mariah was still in the car, the 79-year-old accidentally put her car in the wrong gear (档位).
"She thought her car was in park but it was in reverse (倒车)," Mariah said. "It started moving. She tried to stop it but she fell. The tire went over her foot."
Mariah immediately knew what to do. She jumped into the front seat and quickly pulled the keys from the ignition (点火装置), stopping the car in its tracks. With Patricia's leg trapped under the car's front left wheel, Mariah rushed to the house to get help.
Mariah's mom, Porchia Lane, came running, calling an ambulance when she realized what had happened. Somehow Patricia was able to pull herself out from under the car's tire, but her leg was badly injured and bleeding heavily. "Mariah went to take a towel. We wrapped Patricia's leg up and caught the ambulance," Porchia recalled, "She really thought fast."
Patricia is now recovering at Trinity Health Oakland Hospital, and Mariah is being called a hero for her quick thinking. Even though the child admitted she felt scared during the accident, she managed to keep a cool head and avoided further tragedy.
Porchia is left to count her lucky stars that her daughter was watching her while she drove. "She was able to think fast and she probably was calmer than me in this situation because I would have been crazy," she tells other parents. "I just told Mariah to follow her heart and make right decisions."

I'd always loved to sing and had signed up for the school talent show in fourth grade when I started stuttering.
I consulted speech experts but it didn't help. I did everything I could to rid my stutter, but nothing changed. I was very confused. If I couldn't bring myself to speak in class, how would I be able to sing in the school talent show? I decided to practice at home. To my amazement, the words came smoothly when I sang. My stutter disappeared. I felt so free on stage performing in the talent show. After that, I joined my school team and began learning how to play the guitar.
By the summer I was 16, severe anxiety and depression set in. My stutter had become my entire identity, and I was afraid to talk at all. I didn't tell anyone how I was feeling.
One burning hot August afternoon, I went to the basement for the coolness, where I kept my musical equipment. My eyes lit on the guitar I had gotten for my thirteenth birthday. I picked it up and started playing it casually. Then I opened my mouth, and the words came flooding out.
Last year, I started college at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia, where I'm majoring in music production. When I saw the America's Got Talent announcement pop up on my computer, I signed up.
A couple of months later, there I was—standing on that huge stage in Pasadena, trying to calm my nerves as I introduced myself to the America's Got Talent judges and audience.
"I have a bit of speech disorder, "I told everyone there. "It was definitely something that caused me to..." I took a long pause to find the words."...to shy away, to hide. But I found that I don't stutter when I sing."
Then I launched into a new song I'd written, titled Back to Life. I tried to focus on the music, not all the eyes on me. And just as I'd said, there was no stutter at all.

Online thrift (节俭) store thredUP has released its tenth annual Resale Report. The study, which assesses trends in the secondhand clothing industry, has an obviously positive tone. Resale is booming in the United States, as well as globally, and the secondhand market in the US is expected to more than double by 2026, reaching an impressive valuation of $82 billion.
This is serious growth that indicates a real shift in the way people approach shopping for clothes. For most, it's a way to save money in an inflationary (通货膨胀) economy. Forty-four percent of shoppers say they're cutting back on buying clothing-more than any category apart from restaurants. Some say secondhand is enabling them to keep enjoying the brands they love.
When choosing what to buy, people are increasingly careful about what can be resold. More than one-fifth of Gen Z (网络新生代) shoppers said they'll pay more for an item that they know they can resell, and 36% of Gen Z shoppers stock and clear their closets at the same monthly or weekly rate. More than half resold clothing last year. As resale becomes more accessible thanks to mobile technology and online platforms, increasing numbers of customers are keen to turn over their closets, which fuels the industry and keeps the market full of fresh finds, bringing people back for more.
Secondhand helps to relieve people's climate-related concerns. Thrifting is far better for the environment than buying new. As thredUP reported in 2021,buying used reduces an item's carbon footprint by 82%. Choosing used over new displaces 17.4 pounds of CO2 emissions. It requires far less water and energy to produce, and it spares that item from going to landfill, where it will break down and give off methane, a greenhouse gas more powerful than CO2.
It's great to hear such positive news. Thrifting is a no-brainer, when you stop to think about it-well-made and good-looking fashion that helps the planet while saving us money. The more mainstream it can get, the better off we'll all be.
(1)、What does the booming of resale mean to most shoppers according to the text?A、Reducing expenses. B、Bringing down inflation. C、Focusing less on brands. The research company OpenAI has recently released ChatGPT, a language model that can construct remarkably well-structured arguments based on simple cues provided by a user. The system which uses a massive source of online text to predict what words should come next is able to create new stories in the style of famous writers, write news articles about itself and produce essays that could easily receive a passing grade in most English classes.
That last use has raised concern among academics, who worry about the possibility of an easily accessible platform that, in a matter of seconds, can put together essays as good as -- if not better than -- the writing of a typical student.
Cheating in school is not new, but ChatGPT and other language models are totally different from the hacks(雇佣文人)students have used to take a shortcut in the past. The writing these language models produce is completely original, meaning that it can't be distinguished by even the most advanced plagiarism(剽窃)software. The AI also goes beyond just providing students with information they should be finding themselves. It organizes that information into a complete narrative.
Beyond potential academic honesty issues, some teachers worry that the true value of learning to write -- like analysis, critical thinking, creativity and the ability to structure an argument -- will be lost when AI can do all those complex things in a matter of seconds.
"We might know more things but we never learned how we got there. We've always said that the process is the best part and we know that. The satisfaction is the best part. That might be the thing that's removed from all of this. Actually, I don't know what a person is like if they've never had to struggle through learning. I don't know the behavioral implications of that," said Peter Laffin.
"Whenever there's a new technology, there's a panic around it. It's the responsibility of academics to have a healthy amount of distrust, but I don't feel like this is an undefeatable challenge," Sandra Wachter, technology researcher, said.
(1)、What is mainly stressed about ChatGPT in the first paragraph?A、Its unusual functions. B、Its working process. C、Its promising future. D、Its wide application.(2)、What is unique about ChatGPT's writings?A、They belong to a new cheating form. B、They are writings of ChatGPT's own. C、They provide students with all needed information. D、They are better than writings from the hacks.(3)、What is Peter Laffin concerned about?A、AI makes us struggle through learning. B、AI might be improperly used by hacks. C、AI might rob us of the pleasure of learning. D、AI might result in many writers losing their jobs.(4)、What can we infer from Sandra Wachter's words?A、He is pleased to see the release of ChatGPT. B、He is ready for the challenges from ChatGPT. C、He is in a panic about the use of ChatGPT. D、He has a healthy distrust of ChatGPT. -

"You need to sign this," my son Joe informed me. "What is it?" I asked. Rolling his eyes with a sense of impatience, Joe replied," Your permission. And it's due tomorrow!"
I learned that Joe's sixth-grade class would be taking a field trip to the state capital. "That sounds like fun," I said." I've always wanted to go there." "You can't come!" Joe answered. Puzzled, I asked. "Why not?" "Because you always come on field trips!"
Of course, I always joined his class on field trips. Being a chaperone(监护人)on a field trip is one of the advantages that comes with being a mom, a vacation day in a career that offers few opportunities for a change of scenery. "You don't want me to be a chaperone?" "Give someone else's mom a chance," he suggested. What was surprising was how much I minded being so impolitely removed from the short list of willing chaperones by my own son.
When Joe was in kindergarten, his class planned a pretend trip to Norway. The day before the trip, Joe woke up not feeling well.
After learning that he didn't have a fever, I asked, "You don't want to miss getting ready for the trip to Norway, do you?" "I guess not," he said.
But when I picked him up at the end of the day, the teacher whispered, "Joe got a little upset today." "What happened?" "He doesn't want to go to Norway without you." So that was what had been bothering my 5-year-old.He thought his class was really flying to Norway on their wooden chairs in their paper airplane. He believed those passports and tickets he and his classmates had been making were the real deal.
Preadolescence fell upon my family as my husband and I found ourselves preparing for our son's upcoming teen years with the same trepidation as someone about to climb an ice-covered mountain wearing high heels.
Joe needed to take a field trip without me accompanying him. And I needed to let him. I'm glad he doesn't need me all the time.

I really place many people into two categories when it comes to shopping. The first is people who simply love doing window shopping and do it quite regularly maybe because they are really good at spotting bargains. The other category, which I suppose is obvious that people who simply dislike shopping for anything. They find it very boring, and frustrating and do not particularly like going to their local shopping malls for anything. They will probably do anything to try and get away with shopping for gifts and I had the same problem until I discovered something.
The simple discovery was to shop online for everything. This is especially fantastic when you are shopping online for gifts because there are so many websites out there dedicated to(致力于)supplying all kinds of gifts for every occasion you can think of. The greatest thing is that you can do this from the comfort of your own home without having to leave and sit at a computer with a nice mug of coffee to help. Researching is always important because you need to make sure whoever you are going to purchase this before is going to like it. You need to make sure of your researched pricing to ensure that you are getting good value for money. Generally, online you will always find things cheaper than buying something in a store in your local shopping mall. The fact that the website does not have many overheads with staffing and rent(租赁)gives them the opportunity to sell products at a reduced price.
It's also important that you make sure the website you purchase things from has a good reputation. Check their customer service and also read any feedback that they may have from customers who have already made a purchase.

Africa is often called the cradle(摇篮)of civilization. The first human beings appeared on the continent about 2 million years ago. Old civilizations grew along the banks of the Nile River. Thousands of years ago ancient Egypt became a powerful empire, to the south Nubia emerged(出现)in today's Sudan. After 1000 AD, great empires emerged in Ghana and other areas in western Africa. City-states, including Mogadishu and Zanzibar, grew into powerful trading centers in East Africa. Towards the end of the Middle Ages the first Europeans came to Africa. From the early 1500s on, they made money by bringing slaves to North America. The British, Dutch and Portuguese set up trading posts along the western African coast where they searched for gold and ivory. In the 17th century, the Dutch set up a trading post at the Cape of Good Hope. It grew into a Dutch colony(殖民地)until the 19th century, when the British took over. At the end of the 19th century, Europeans ruled most of Africa. They saw the continent as a major source of raw materials that they could bring back to Europe for their emerging industries. As a result, the Industrial Revolution did not take place in Africa. Throughout the colonial period, European countries fought for influence and control in Africa. In the "Scramble(争夺)for Africa", they divided the continent into areas of interest. Native Africans often resisted colonial governments and in many areas, they were killed in uprisings(起义).
One of the last countries to gain independence was Rhodesia, today's Zimbabwe, where blacks fought for over a decade against the British. In South Africa, white Europeans gave up control of the country after Apartheid(种族隔离)ended in the 1990s.
Many African countries did not know how to deal with their newly gained independence, largely because they had no experience in administrating and governing a nation. As a result, civil wars, tribal(部落的)conflicts and power struggles broke out. They resulted in dozens of wars in Africa since the 1960s.

B、They are short of resources C、They want more free land. D、They still have no civil rights. -

When I was 10, I was always joked by my fellow Co-Curricular Activities (CCA) mates, including my best friend John. Words were like, "Dick is "the best player" in the CCA! He only knows how to play the song' Mary had a Little Lamb' on the trumpet(小号)!"
Once, the moment I left the school, I took out my earpiece, listening to recordings. I got so engrossed that I didn't see the wall in front and fell on the ground. Luckily for me, a passer-by saw what had happened and immediately called the ambulance. When I woke up in the hospital, however, the nurse told me that I suffered severe leg injuries. I could have stopped practicing but that was not what I wanted. I wanted to practice even in the hospital. "One leg injury would not stop me;it would only make me feel more motivated," I replied to the nurse.
That was a hard period of my life. If I had not been careless, I would not have this problem. Yet if I haven't gotten myself into this problem, I would not be as motivated and would not have that experience teaching me a life lesson. My parents and my best friend had come to give me emotional support, telling me what had happened during CCA today and advising me on how to become a better player. After day-and-night hard practice, I finally perfected and went back to my CCA.
On the selection day itself, the conductor praised me and asked how I had improved so much. I explained that it was because of my determination, my family and my friends. The conductor then said that I was a role model and that the whole band should follow my motivation and practice instead of being like John. This experience made me what I am today. Currently, I am the best player and the head of the secondary school military band.
(1)、What did the author want to do after hearing the nurse's words?A、Go back to his team. B、Continue his practice in the hospital. C、Stop practicing and get some rest. D、Meet his family and friends.(2)、Why was the author praised by the conductor?A、He got the first prize on the selection day. B、He didn't give up even with severe injuries. C、He performed better than John. D、He was selected the head of the band.(3)、What is the meaning of the underlined word?A、Creative. B、promoted. C、absorbed. D、upset(4)、Which can be a suitable title for the text?A、A terrible accident B、An unexpected result C、A desire to be better D、An experience to shape myself
