At first glance, it seems that giant pandas (大熊猫) might not be good at hide- and-seek. With their black and white coats, they appear to have a hard time matching their backgrounds and avoiding detection by their enemies. But a new study finds that the unique markings, in fact, provide effective camouflage (伪装) and help them disappear into their surroundings. Scientists have long wondered what function the black-and-white coloring plays.

For their study, researchers analyzed photos of giant pandas in their natural habitats. "We've found that the animals are very well camouflaged because they use habitats with dark and lighting conditions, and also snow during some time of the year," study author Tim Caro of the University of Bristol and the University of California, Davis, tells Treehugger.

They found that the black patches (块) of fur match primarily shade and dark tree trunks. They also match the ground, rocks and leaves. The white fur patches match snow, rocks, and waxy, bright leaves. Sometimes pandas also have patches of pale brown fur and those match rocks, ground and shady background areas.

The researchers also explored a type of environmental camouflage known as disruptive coloration. That's when highly contrasting patterns or very visible boundaries on an animal break up its body outline. They found that the black and white borders on the panda's coat make it less noticeable, particularly from farther away.

It might seem a bit confusing because giant pandas are very easy to spot at a zoo, for instance. But the environment and the viewer make a difference.

"We modelled their coloration through enemies' eyes as well as how humans see them so we are sure of the results." Caro says.

"It seems that giant pandas appear easily noticeable to us because of short viewing distances and unnatural backgrounds, when we see them, either in photographs or at the zoo, it is almost always from close up, and often against a backdrop that doesn't reflect their natural habitats," says author Nick Scott-Samuel of the University of Bristol. "From a more realistic enemy's view, the giant panda is actually rather well camouflaged."

Climate change is a global challenge. One way to fight it is by reducing the amount of carbon dioxide in the air. New research shows that trees planted in China have helped in this fight.

A recent study in the journal Nature shows that the amount of carbon dioxide absorbed (吸收) by new forests in two parts of China is more than we thought. These areas are in the northeastern Heilongjiang and Jilin provinces and the southwestern Yunnan and Guizhou provinces and Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region. They make up about 35 percent of China's land-based (基于陆地的) carbon sinks (碳汇). A carbon sink is a natural area like a forest or ocean that absorbs more-carbon dioxide than it emits (排放). Carbon sinks help to reduce the amount of CO₂ in the atmosphere.

China's goal is to peak (达到峰值) its CO₂ emissions (排放) before 2030 and reach carbon neutrality (中和) by 2060, Xinhua reported. Carbon neutrality refers to removing as much CO₂ as one puts into the air.

According to study co-author Yi Liu at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, "the afforestation activities described in our Nature paper will play a role in reaching that goal."

It seems a red squirrel（松鼠） has been causing some trouble for Bill Fischer of Fargo, North Dakota.

The salesman returned from a four-day trip in early September and opened the hood (引擎盖) of his truck, only to find lots of walnuts (核桃) stored inside.

Fischer knew who did that. Since 2013, the red squirrel has been hiding walnuts in his truck every two years when his neighbor's tree produces walnuts. Fischer said last year's walnut collection was the most the squirrel had ever filled in the hood of his truck.

Every walnut season, Fischer had to empty the hood of his truck and gave the walnuts away. "The squirrel will sit in the tree and watch me clean up the nuts almost like, ‘That's mine, friend,' as it's watching me clean up his winter storage," Fischer said.

Fischer also said the squirrel overlooked other cars. "There are other cars very close to that tree, and it's always my truck," he said. "I've even parked purposely out on the street-as far away as I can from the walnut tree-but it still finds my truck and hides them there."

"It's very possible that this funny squirrel considers Bill Fischer's truck to be part of its home," Aliperti said, who led a study that found that ground squirrels' personalities are tied to risk-taking. Aliperti added that the hood of a truck is a perfect hiding place to a squirrel because it's concealed and dry. Since the squirrel has taken over Fischer's truck again and again, while Bill has thrown the walnuts away year by year, Aliperti laughed and said this one might be very forgetful.

Arthur was messy. He didn't try to make messes, but he didn't try to clean up much, either.
