The idea that you can use humor, laughter, and play to make you healthier probably seems too simple to be true. However, it is really true and simple. The sense of humor, laughter and play plays an important role in keeping you healthy.

Treat the blues with a sense of humor, which is closely tied to laughter. Laughter is infectious. Have you ever heard a big laugh of a young child and been able to keep yourself from smiling? When laughter is shared between people, it makes them closer to each other and increases their happiness. Smiling is the beginning of laughter and a smile is also just as infectious as laughter is. You can experience something by smiling at everyone around you, and you will feel happier just by sharing a smile, even with a stranger.

Play is an important part of making sure that we stay healthy. We are often encouraged to make sure our children play, and are told of the benefits of being out playing. However, what we often forget is that it is just as important for old people to make play be part of their life as it's for children. Physical play is important for the old and it certainly helps prevent illness. While the studies are still in the early stages, the studies that have been done have shown that physical play certainly plays a part in preventing cognitive (认知的) falling.

Anyway, adding humor, laughter, and play to our life will influence us mentally, physically and socially and bring us many advantages. So we should make full use of humor, laughter and play to make our life more active, more interesting and happier.

(1)、What does the underlined word "infectious" in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A、Quickly influencing other people. B、Preventing illness from spreading. C、Keeping people in high spirits. D、Playing an important role.
(2)、What can laughter increase according to the author?
A、Happiness and confidence B、A sense of humor. C、Cognitive ability. D、Good relationships.
(3)、What does the author think the old should do?
A、They should have a good rest. B、They should prevent cognitive falling. C、They should take part in physical play. D、They should play like children.
(4)、Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A、Always Keep Our Body Healthy B、Let Our Body and Mind Relax C、Have an Active and Happy Life D、Humor, Laughter and Play for Health

Are you looking forward to watching some great films this summer? Here are four films you won't miss.

    Wonder Woman

Wonder Woman is this summer's most exciting film. Though being a superhero film, it is the most unique: you will see the first female superhero starred by Gal Gadot. On general release from 1 June.

    The Mummy

Tom Cruise awakens an ancient princess who has now become a mummy. Cruise jumps from the sky, runs around a lot and wakes up naked in a sleeping bag — but it's Sofia Boutella as the Mummy who draws the most attention. Director Alex Kurtzman speaks highly of Sofia Boutella as the Mummy: "If you look at her eyes, there's a whole performance going on here. Even not saying anything, she can convey something very emotional to you." On general release from 8 June.

    Baby Driver

Ansel Elgort is a getaway driver, who is forced to work for a crime boss. This is an actionromanticcomedy from British writerdirector Edgar Wright. The sound in the film is as great as the visuals, which makes it much like a musical, but it is quite different from La La Land. Baby Driver isn't just a series of song pieces. Instead, it finds its form in the elegant, rapidfire combination of movement and sound. Released on 28 June in Canada and the US.

    A Man Called Ove

This film has become one of Sweden's most popular comedies. In the film a lonely retiree who has given up on life, was trying to kill himself, but all his attempts failed. Meanwhile, he developed an unlikely friendship with his neighbors. It is really a tearjerker, which is funny, tragic, and heartwarming as well. Released on 25 May in Hong Kong, 30 June in the UK.

When I was seven, I found a watch while walking down the hallway of my school. The watch was expensive-looking, set with gold. As I picked it up, greedy (贪欲) suddenly came over me, and instead of turning it into the office like I should have, I became the owner of the watch.

When I got home from school, I found Mom cooking dinner in the kitchen. Thinking that she would be impressed, I held out my prize for her to see with a feeling of excitement and pride. Mom, however, was far from impressed. Instead, she was angry at her son keeping the watch instead of turning it in. Mom then ordered me to go straight back to school and take the watch to someone at the office. I started to argue, but after taking a good look at the expression on Mom's face, I realized that would get me nowhere. There was nothing left for me to do but obey (服从).

I have to admit, I was rather angry with Mom for making me give up the watch. I felt that it was justly mine since I was the one who had found it. Yes, I knew she was right, but greed had forced me to keep the watch, and now pride wouldn't allow me to admit that I had done something wrong. But time passed, and I forgot all about the lesson that I learned from the watch until fourteen years later.

While I was attending college, I had managed to get a job at a Walmart pushing carts off the parking lot. One morning, I found a checkbook (支票簿) that had been left in a shopping cart. Quickly, I took it to the customers service desk and gave it to the employee there so that the customer who had lost it could pick it up.

Believe it or not, studies have shown that around 85% of people applying for a job eliminate (淘汰)themselves in a basic way. They apply for the wrong job, have misspellings in their resumes, show up late for the interview, and more.  You'd only be competing against the 15% that do things right. It takes nothing more than a little time and effort to get things right, but it makes all the difference.

Research the company carefully and thoroughly. Have a good research about any company in which you have an interest before attending an interview. Read past press coverage. Learn about its products and/or services.  Read customer feedback (反馈) about its products, and learn about its strengths and weaknesses.

Rehearse (预演) the interview over and over again. Before an interview, think about what you are going to say.  Rehearse and practice your answers.

Dress yourself in the most suitable way. Always dress to impress! You always want to look, at least, 10% better than the person who is interviewing you, regardless of the position for which you are applying.

Always send a thankyou email or letter after an interview. With a little bit of preparation and followup, you will be better off than the 15% of your competition!

    B. Post interview followup.

    C. Write down what you want from it.

    D. This fact is actually good news for you!

There was once a boy called Mario who loved to have lots of friends at school. However, he wasn't sure whether or not his schoolmates were his real friends, so he asked his grandpa for help. The old man told him, "I just have what you exactly need, and it's in the attic (阁楼). Wait here a minute. " Grandpa left, soon returning as though carrying something in his hand, but Mario could see nothing there. "Take it. It's a very special chair. It's rather tricky to sit on because it's invisible (无形的),but if you take it to school and you try to sit on it. you'll be able to tell who your real friends are. " Grandpa said.

Mario was curious to know whether it was true or not, so he took the strange invisible chair and set off for school. At break time he asked everyone to form a circle, and he put himself in the middle, with his chair. "Nobody move! You're about to see something amazing. "

Then Mario tried to sit on the chair. But he missed and fell down onto his back. Everyone had a pretty good laugh. Mario wouldn't be beaten. He kept trying to sit on the magic chair, and kept falling to the ground…until, suddenly, he tried again and didn't fall. This time he sat, hovering(悬浮) in mid-air…

Looking around, Mario saw George, Lucas and Diana—three of his best friends, holding him up, so he wouldn't fall down. Meanwhile, many others he had thought of as friends had done nothing but make fun of him, enjoying his every fall.

Leaving with his three friends, he explained to them how his grandfather had so cleverly thought of a way to show him that true friends are those who care for us, and not just any acquaintance(熟人) who happens to be passing by. Even less would a friend be someone who takes joy in our misfortunes.

(1)、Why did Mario turn to his grandpa for help?
A、He couldn't make any friends. B、He didn't get along with his schoolmates. C、He didn't like his school. D、He couldn't find out who his true friends were.
(2)、Why was Mario able to hover in the mid-air?
A、Because he managed to sit on the invisible chair finally. B、Because his three friends held him up with their hands. C、Because his classmates gave him a chair to sit on. D、Because he could see the magic chair clearly.
(3)、Who are real friends according to the text?
A、Those who laugh with us. B、Those who take joy in our misfortunes. C、Those who care about us when we are in trouble. D、Those who care for us when we are popular at school.
(4)、How did Mario most probably feel in the end of the text?
    A、Happy. B、Unconcerned. C、Upset. D、Uncomfortable.

You know by now that dirt is good for lots of things: growing plants, feeding worms, even the occasional mud bath. But building houses? Absolutely.

People build houses with dirt because it is plentiful, really cheap, and fireproof. Thick dirt walls keep you warm in winter and cool in summer. And you can build a whole house with few tools other than your own two hands.

In fact, dirt is so good for building things that half the people in the world live in houses made of mud. Maybe even you!

Mud works best for building where it's dry for most of the year. If there's too much rain, the walls of your mud house could melt like ice cream on a warm day. But in places that don't see many storm clouds, mud bricks (砖块),which are baked hard in the sun or in a hot oven, can be as strong and durable as stone. In Africa, some mudbrick buildings have been standing for thousands of years.

In the southwestern United States, American Indians built fourstory apartment buildings from mud bricks called adobe (土坯). And on the Great Plains, the first white settlers saw an ocean of grass as tall as oxen, but few trees for building houses. So they made their houses out of sod, dirt held together by the thick, tangled roots of prairie grass.

Most sod houses became worm food years ago, but many of the buildings you see every day are pure dirt. The bricks that may make up the walls of your house or school are made of clay that's been baked in a fiery kiln (炉). So the next time someone says a building is made of bricks, correct them. You know it's really made of plain old dirt.

(1)、What does the second paragraph mainly tell us?
A、The way to build houses of dirt. B、The best time to build houses of dirt. C、The reasons to build houses of dirt. D、The places to build houses of dirt.
(2)、Which of the following is the best place to build such houses in?
A、Places where it rains most of the year. B、Places where there are many storm clouds. C、Places where there is little rain all the year around. D、Places where it is cold in winter and hot in summer.
(3)、The first white settlers built houses with sods because____.
A、the grass was as tall as oxen B、they were as strong as stones C、they could make a garden on the roof D、they were lack of wood
(4)、What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A、Sod houses could be destroyed by worms. B、Sod houses could last as long as stone ones. C、Sod bricks are baked in the oven. D、Sod bricks are really made of pure dirt.

At first, this made my sisterinlaw "feel better". Then the good situation suddenly ended. She recalled," I found out that she was someplace that she said she wasn't. I went out in the middle of the night and found her walking without shoes in the middle of the street with some friends. "Things went quickly downhill for the mother and the daughter after that.

With 73% of teens having their own smartphones now, according to a  2018 Pew study, more and more of their parents are facing the question:To spy or not?

Ana Homayoun, founder of Green Ivy Educational Consulting, has advised many parents and their kids about this. "I've found teens are more receptive to tracking apps when it is included as part of a family use agreement to improve safety than when it is placed as a secret tool to watch them," she said.

Mark Bell, a father of a teenage girl, said, "We don't have tracking apps, but we have set some ground rules that my daughter must follow in exchange for providing a smartphone. " For example, his daughter must "friend" him on social media accounts so that he can review posts, and must share all passwords.

When you're trying to build credence, you need to create an environment that encourages it. So, to win their trust, you always need to be straight with your children. "Parents must let children know how and when they'll be watching them," said Doctor Pauleh Weigle. If they're not open about it, he warns, it can "greatly damage the parent and child relationship".

(1)、Why did the author's sister-in-law use the app?
A、Because she was interested in new apps. B、Because she was worried about her daughter. C、Because she wanted to know about afterclass activities. D、Because she wanted to teach her daughter about the app.
(2)、What can we learn about today's children from Homayoun?

    (3)、According to paragraph 5, Bell's daughter____.
A、kept him out of her online groups B、developed some bad online habits C、allowed him to know her online behavior D、wanted to put a tracking app on her phone
(4)、What is the possible meaning of the underlined word "credence" in the last paragraph?
    A、Trust. B、A credit card. C、Environment. D、Praise.

Going back to school after a long break can be exciting for many. But for some, it isn't easy, especially when there is something bothering them from deep inside—emotional baggage. One teacher in Oklahoma wanted to address that and that's what she just did last week when her 7th and 8th graders showed up to school.

Karen Wunderlich Loewe has become popular after she posted about her school activity, which encouraged her young pupils to let it all out, whatever emotional baggage they have. This activity has moved the whole class to tears.

The students were told to write on the paper anonymously (不具名地) so they can have the courage to share their emotional baggage with the class. The students would then crumple (弄皱)their paper and put it and throw it across the room.

Each student would then pick up any piece of paper and read it to the class. Everyone learned what others' problems were. There were things like losing pets, being left by their parents, disease, death…and on and on.

Once someone finished reading a piece of paper, the English teacher would then ask the class who owned that note. Students had a choice of admitting it or not. Many of them did and ended up sharing their stories with the entire class.

There's just a 1-in-3,700,000 chance that a person will be killed by shark, but the fear is still enough to have swimmers worrying about seen as prey(捕获物). Now, new research supports the long-standing theory great whites go in for a bite, it's a case of "mistaken identity".

A team of biologists (compare) videos of seals swimming with those of humans swimming. They then edited the clips to simulate a great white's vision and found that from the ocean inhabitant's point view, humans do indeed have a strong resemblance to seals.

"Usually, great white sharks (regard) as ‘mindless killers' and fond of human flesh. However, this does not seem to be the case; we just look like (they) food," Laura Ryan, lead author of the study, told Live Science.

"They eat seals every day and bites on people are (extreme) rare," said Catherine MacDonald, a marine scientist at the University of Miami. "So if they're not solving the problem visually, then how do we think they're solving it? (hit) the right targets, sharks could be relying on other senses, like the scent. If that's the case, (addition) studies on how great whites use those senses could help prevent further attack."

Talking to someone on a train, bus, or subway can be risky yet exciting, as you never know when they're going to get off. Here are some useful tips.

Make eye contact. Making brief eye contact can show the person that you're interested and help you judge whether they are interested in you. If they look away quickly or appear disinterested, it's probably best not to approach.

If the person looks at you once more, this is a good sign that they notice you and want to interact with you. When making eye contact, keep your facial expression light and friendly, rather than straight and serious.

Smile at them. If you are successful, smile at the person. A small but genuine smile makes you appear interested, friendly, and approachable. If the other person smiles back, you're likely in luck in getting them to talk to you.

Use open body language.  Do this by keeping your arms uncrossed. Stand or sit up straight and show good posture(姿势).

Once you've read the other person to see if they're interested in conversing (交谈),make a move. If you're far away, move closer. You should keep a comfortable distance where you can hear each other yet not feel awkward if the conversation doesn't work out. Find a seat near them, yet don't crowd them.

If they're standing, stand near enough to them to be able to speak with them, but don't get too close for comfort. If there's a seat next to them, ask, "May I sit here?" Try not to be nervous. Many people are just as excited to chat with new people as you are. If they engage, then keep it up!

    A. Notice how they respond.

    B. Approach the person to start talking to them.

    C. As you can see, your body language speaks for itself.

    D. Try to make eye contact again after about 30 seconds.

    E. Eye contact is the act of looking into someone's eyes.

    F. Make a point to appear open, comfortable, and available.

    G. You'll meet some people and perhaps even make some friends.

In July 2021, astronauts on board the International Space Station (ISS) planted pepper seeds as part of an experiment to test which plants could be successfully grown in space. The peppers were harvested four months later, and the team celebrated with a party and taste test.

For astronauts living mostly off prepackaged foods for months at a time on the ISS, fresh and flavourful produce is welcomed. With long missions to the Moon and Mars in focus, NASA is working to find sustainable ways for astronauts to enjoy fresh foods, which will add key nutrients to their diets and improve their state of mind.

Astronauts have grown radishes, zinnias and a variety of lettuces on board the ISS before, but this is the first time they grew peppers, which posed a new challenge, reports Elizabeth Howell for Space. com.

Biologists at the Kennedy Space Centre spent two years picking the perfect pepper. They wanted to try peppers because they're a great source of vitamins and nutrients, and they can be eaten raw or cooked. Plus, peppers are fairly low maintenance to grow.

In June, a carrier delivered supplies to the ISS along with a package of 48 pepper seeds. Astronauts on board planted the seeds in a microwave oven-sized growing container. The conditions in it—such as lighting, watering and air circulation—were controlled by a crew based at the Kennedy Space Centre. On board, the astronauts collected data and offered feedback on the flavour of the peppers.

"This is important because the food astronauts eat needs to be as good as the rest of their equipment," LaShelle Spencer, a plant scientist at NASA, said over the summer. "To successfully send people to Mars and bring them back to Earth, we will not only require the most nutritious foods, but the best tasting ones as well."

(1)、Why did astronauts attempt to plant pepper in space?
A、There were no enough food for astronauts. B、Only pepper can grow in space. C、Pepper can grow better than other plants. D、Humans wanted to test which plants can grow in space.
(2)、What special benefits does pepper have relative to other plants?
A、It needn't too much later care. B、Its nutrients are the highest. C、The vitamins in it are the most. D、It improves their state of mind most.
(3)、What does the underlined word "it" refer to in paragraph 5?
    A、Package. B、Container. C、Seed D、Microwave.
(4)、What can we infer from the text?
A、The idea that pepper is grown in space is silly. B、Astronaut need special nutrition to keep the best state of mind. C、Pepper can't be eaten cooked in space but it can be eaten raw. D、It is the carrier that is in charge of sending feedback on the peppers.

China is betting on its successful hybrid rice varieties to fight food shortage in Africa.

"We're no longer suffering from hunger," 55-year-old Georges Ranaivomanana,a Madagascan farmer who took the lead in planting Chinese hybrid rice in his town of Mahitsy. Georges told Xinhua that he hoped that all Madagascan farmers would use the seeds to raise their living standards.

China has been helping African countries develop productive rice farming for years with its hybrid rice. For farmers on the continent like Ranaivomanana, they are "very grateful" to the Chinese as the hybrid rice is the key to better food security and higher incomes.

In May, the China National Hybrid Rice Research and Development Centre opened a research centre in Madagascar to select hybrid rice varieties based on the island nation's diverse ecological environment, in an effort to find more productive crops for a continent long troubled by insufficient grain output.

In the northwestern Nigerian state of Kebbi, Chinese expert Wang Xuemin stood in a rice field, surrounded by green rice plants. "This year, we are using a new technology," he said, adding that "it can significantly reduce labor and other costs." "The land, climate and rice farming methods in Nigeria are very different from those in China. We had a lot of problems at the beginning," said the 51-year-old who has been in Nigeria for 16 years.

In 2006, after Wang and his colleagues had sown the seeds, their field management techniques and large-scale farming equipment could not adapt to the operating environment, and hundreds of hectares of rice fields were almost completely taken over by weeds. "We came to realize that blindly copying the Chinese model is not feasible (可行的). It is necessary to constantly innovate our techniques to fit the local situation in Africa," he said.

After more than ten years of research and innovation, the Nigerian farm now becomes a major training and mechanized production centre in the country, training more than 1,000 farmers and agricultural machinery management staff.

(1)、What's the attitude of African farmers about Chinese hybrid rice?
A、A little skeptical. B、Full of gratitude. C、Much disappointed. D、Extremely curious.
(2)、How old was Wang Xuemin when he came to Nigeria?
A、51 years old. B、55 years old. C、67 years old. D、35 years old.
(3)、What can we infer from what Wang Xuemin said?
A、Different technologies should be applied to different areas. B、Chinese technology of hybrid rice can't be applied in Africa. C、Chinese technology of hybrid rice wastes more labor and costs. D、Chinese experts contribute to raising African living standards.
(4)、What's the best title of the text?
A、China's Hybrid Rice Sows Hope for Africa B、Africans Fight Food Shortage with Chinese C、The Sowing of Hybrid Rice Should Vary from Country D、Chinese Hybrid Rice Research Has Not Been Open in Africa

How many bicycles do you need in your life? For 67-year-old Chai Lin, the answer is 1,300 and counting

Chai's passion for bicycles dates back to the 1960s when he saw some people riding the two-wheeled vehicle in his home city of Lanzhou, capital of north-west China's Gansu Province. However, in that era, a bicycle was still a luxury for ordinary Chinese. To get enough money sooner, Chai made use of his talent in calligraphy and painting—a skill he started to learn from six years old—by selling artworks on the street. Thanks to all the efforts and "crowd-funding" in his family, Chai got his first bike in 1980.

After becoming a businessman years later and earning enough to buy fancy motorbikes and cars, Chai's passion for bikes, however, didn't dwindle at all. He began to collect bikes of various brands and ages, especially antiques, from around the world through auctions and other ways.

With his collection growing, there was no space big enough to keep it. In 2009, with the support of the Gansu provincial government, he invested 200 million yuan for a museum just for his bikes.

After 10 years' efforts, the Gansu Sanmu Bicycle Museum, located in Chengguan District of Lanzhou, finally opened to the public in January 2019 free of charge.

The museum has been designated as an off-campus research centre for local primary and middle school students and is also popular with tourists. In the first half of this year alone, it received more than 900,000 tourists. Due to limited space, a large part of Chai's collection is not yet exhibited and has to be stored in the warehouse, driving him to improve the museum.

"Bikes carry unique and precious memories of our generation. I hope to expand the scale of the displaying area of the museum and provide a comfortable ‘home' for my bikes," he said.

(1)、What's the main idea of the second paragraph?
A、Chai has a talent for calligraphy and painting. B、Chai has a unique love for bicycles more than others. C、Chai knew the skill of life when he was very young. D、Chai managed to get his first bicycle through all efforts.
(2)、What's the meaning of the underlined word "dwindle" in the third paragraph?
    A、Decrease. B、Exist. C、Strengthen. D、Develop.
(3)、How does the author develop the text?
A、By giving data. B、By giving examples. C、By the order of time. D、By comparison with others.
(4)、What will be continued to describe next?
A、Chai will make more speeches in various occasions. B、Chai's Bicycle Museum will be open to visitors from the world. C、Chai will expand the museum to treasure the memory of bikes. D、Chai's Bicycle Museum will display all collections in the warehouse.
