Just like a smartwatch can tell its wearers how many calories they need during exercise, data from dolphin wearables can now be used to estimate how much energy dolphins use when they swim.
University of Michigan engineers, together with scientists at Dolphin Quest Oahu, have led the development of wearable sensors(传感器) for marine animals to monitor movement and behavior in order to improve marine preservation efforts for these animals.
Dolphins and other sea creatures are affected by human disturbances(干扰) in their habitat, including climate change, overfishing, noise pollution from shipping, construction, oil exploration and other activities. These types of disturbances can interrupt important animal behavior like hunting for fish and socializing, but measuring the disturbance is difficult be-cause the animals live under water.
Devices very similar to fitness trackers used by humans, known as biologging tags, are used in biology research, but estimating the energetic cost of swimming has been challenging. Now, with the biologging tags made together with an instrument company, Michigan engineers are able to measure animal movement during thousands of strokes(划) as they swim.
According to Alex Shorter, U-M assistant professor of mechanical engineering, their goal is to use tag data to estimate how many fish are eaten by dolphins during a day, and connect that to estimates of how much energy dolphins use during the movement required to catch those fish. That is important for preservation because they can then use their approach to estimate energetic costs when these animals are disturbed.
In their new work, the researchers were able to develop estimates of energetic cost from tag data by working with their human and animal collaborators at Dolphin Quest Oahu. In this unique environment, the researchers were able to conduct repeatable swimming trials over a range of speeds from multiple animals to generate the data needed to estimate how much energy the animals were using as they swam. Marine animal specialists trained the dolphins to wear the tracker during lap trials and periods of free swimming.
(1)、What is the final goal of developing wearable sensors for marine animals?A、To record the number of them. B、To promote the protection for them. C、To keep track of the lifestyle of them. D、To monitor their movement and behavior.(2)、Why is it hard to measure the disturbance of dolphins?A、Because of their habitat. B、Because of their strange behaviors. C、Because of too many kinds of disturbances. D、Because of too simple measuring equipment.(3)、What is tag data used to do?A、Learn about the way dolphins hunt. B、Know the number of species of dolphins. C、Make sure what kind of fish dolphins eat. D、Figure out dolphin's probable amount of energetic costs.(4)、What is the best title for the text?A、A New Device Made by Alex Shorter B、A Smartwatch Designed for Marine Scientists C、New Activity Trackers for Dolphin Conservation D、A University Working with an Instrument Company -

Three high school seniors from Callisburg, Texas, learned that an old gatekeeper in their school didn't have enough money to retire, so they decided to help him out.
The three students, Greyson Thurman, Marti Yousko and Banner Tidwell, from Callisburg High School created a GoFundMe page on Feb. 15, which attracted many people after Thurman posted a video of the old man's cleaning a hallway on the Internet. The video was accompanied by music and text that included a link to the GoFundMe page they created.
"This is our 80-year-old gatekeeper who had his rent raised and had to come back to work. Let's help Mr James out," the post read. "No one at his age should have to be cleaning our messes up to continue to live."
Through the page, they got more than 8,000 donations totaling about $260,000. Most of the donations came from Callisburg's students and staff. "It's amazing," said Jason Hooper, Callisburg High Principal. In his opinion, the need was met because of the three kind kids. All the students who joined in the activity met that need.
The three students said they had to help the old man after he was forced out of retirement due to the rising cost of living in the north Texas area. "It's just so sad to see an 80-year-oldman having to do things that no 80-year-old person should have to do," said Tidwell.
Mr James is hardly alone. About 1.5 million retirees have had to rejoin the workforce due to the high inflation(通货膨胀), according to an analysis of the data by the US Department of Labor. About 1 in 6 retirees is considering returning to work in search of greater financial security, according to a survey published this month from Paychex.
Money got from the activity was enough to send Mr James back into retirement. He could get ready to go back to retirement and would live a comfortable life.
(1)、What is paragraph 2 mainly about?A、How to create a page. B、What to do for people in need. C、A brief introduction to Callisburg High School. D、The way the three students helped the gatekeeper.(2)、Which did Jason Hooper think was surprising?A、So many people loving the video. B、The three kids making a difference. C、An 80-year-old gatekeeper still working. D、The total number of the money lent to the gatekeeper.(3)、What does the author intend to show through paragraph 6?A、The high inflation of the US. B、The way most retirees are living. C、The living situation of the retirees. D、What 1 in 6 retirees is considering.(4)、In which section of a newspaper can we find the text?A、Society. B、Economy. After flying all night from Washington, D. C., I was tired as I arrived at a hospital in Denver to hold a workshop on volunteer spirit. As I entered the hospital, a tired middle-aged man came over and asked me "Are you the head of the Make-A-Wish Foundation?" "Yes," I replied. "Well, my name is Caleb. My daughter Nicola was diagnosed as a brain tumor(脑瘤). Her dying wish was to learn figure-skating and performed in public." sobbed the tear poor father.
"Here's Nicola." Caleb said as he put her skinny hand in mine. Before me stood a sixteen-year-old girl wearing a bright red and orange hat to cover her head, which was bald from all of the chemotherapy treatments(化疗). Smiling shyly, the girl began her story.
When limited to her hospital bed, Nicola took comfort in watching her favorite sport – figure skating-on TV. As the skaters twirled (旋转) in the air and glided across the ice, Nicola pictured that she was one of them, zigzagging across a glittering ice rank (溜冰场) as the audience cheered her name. After months of isolation, Nicola wanted nothing more than to be surrounded by a crowd of adoring supporters.
When she learned she would be granted a wish, Nicola came to find me with hope. She knew that what she had imagined for herself would finally become a reality. "Sir, could you please help me?" Nicola uttered, with voice a bit trembling.
Tears welling in my eyes, I was choked up. I cleared my throat, smiled and said, "Sweetheart. Thanks for making a wish. Let's make it happen."
Soon everything was prepared for her. Together, a professional figure skater Linda and a community of kind-hearted supporters were called in to help. A local entertainment venue was arranged. For the following two months, Nicola began her training. She failed countless times in the process of being a skater. However, whenever she fell, she struggled to pull herself up and never gave up.

Suppose your cell phone falls into the water accidentally
it is often possible to save it. Time is essential. However, there are some practical ways you can try. Remove the battery. After getting back your cell phone from the water, the next thing to do is to remove the battery immediately. The battery itself might not work again, but it can be replaced fairly inexpensively.
Take it apart. If you have dropped your cell phone in water, it is also helpful to take it apart, if you can, and let all of the parts dry separately. If it is difficult for you, you can seek professional help.
If you drop your cell phone in water that isn't pure or another liquid, wash the phone with fresh water after you take out the battery. Remember! A quick wash in fresh water is unlikely to do any further damage, but salt, sugar or other materials might. Besides, an alcohol bath will remove minerals and other similar substance.
Let it dry. After your phone is clean, leave it in a warm, dry area or near an air conditioner for at least three days before you attempt to replace the battery and turn it on. Putting your cell phone in a container full of dry rice grains also can help dry it out. Make sure that the rice completely covers the phone.
A. Avoid mineral damage.
B. Put minerals in fresh water.
C. Just be sure that you know how to put them back together.
D. If replacing the batteries doesn't work, have the cell phone fixed immediately.
E. This reduced the risk of a short circuit(短路) that would leave your phone useless.
F. Leaving a cell phone in water for even a few seconds might damage it beyond repair.
G. This is because the slightest water vapor can react with the battery and cause it to short circuit.

If humans do want to set up communities on the moon or other planets, what will they eat? A new test has begun to see if meat cells can grow.
Growing meat from cells even on Earth isn't easy. Cells from a cow(though it could be any animal)are fed the things they need to grow, like amino acids and carbohydrate. The cells multiply until muscle tissue forms, and eventually becomes meat that you can eat. This process is called "cultivation(培养)". The meat is grown in tanks that look more like what you'd find in a brewery than a farm yard. The life-cycle of an animal raised for meat—birth, life and kill—is completely ignored.
"Animal cells grow slowly," says David Humbird, a chemical engineer. "If bacteria were to get into the cultivation, it would grow much faster from animal cells and it will just take over so you aren't making the animal cells anymore. You are making bacteria. And you have to throw it away," says Mr Humbird. "Those cells that are themselves grown on eatable material are going to be sugar, amino acids and water. And the caloric value of the cells that you make will always be less than that. At the best case you could probably recover 25% of the calorie and eat them as food. So the question is, why would you drag all those calorie into space just to waste 75% of them?"
Karen Nyberg is a former astronaut. She says food plays a crucial role in space missions. "Food like powdered milk and that sort of thing comes as a regular source for astronauts, and meat produced in space is just something we don't have. So anything like that makes us feel great and eases our pressure." For Ms Nyberg, fresh food and vegetables are vital if humans are expected to be away from Earth for years at a time.
Certainly if humanity is serious about putting people on Mars, how to feed astronauts with nutrient-rich food that doesn't spoil—and tastes good — is an important and difficult mystery.
(1)、What is the second paragraph mainly about?A、The taste of lab-grown meat. B、The reasons for growing meat in space. C、The potential benefits of growing meat. D、The process of growing meat from cow cells.(2)、What is David Hum bird's attitude toward growing meat in space?A、Optimistic. B、Supportive. C、Disapproving. D、Indifferent.(3)、What can we infer from what Karen said?A、Eating is always a problem for astronauts. B、Food tastes much better in space than on Earth. C、Growing meat does good to astronauts' mental health. D、Astronauts suffer from mental illnesses after long space tasks.(4)、Which of the following is the best title for the text?A、Can meat be grown in space? B、Can astronauts enjoy meat in space? C、Can meat in space be delicious to eat? D、Can lab-grown meat help tackle climate? -

The jack fruit is a delicious fruit found throughout certain parts of Asia. But there is more to the fruit than just its taste. When considering the fruit's English name, it is easy to become overwhelmed with questions like: "Who is Jack? And why does he have his own fruit?"
Surprisingly, "jack fruit" isn't a person's name at all. The fruit's name originally comes from the southern Indian word chakka pazham, with India thought to be the fruit's place of origin. Portuguese explorers who journeyed to this region went on to call it jack, which leads us to the current English name of jack fruit, according to National Public Radio(NPR). Unfortunately, no one called Jack has been proven to be involved at any point in this process.
There is another food, however, that was directly named after a person—the sandwich. In the 18th century, playing card games late into the night became fashionable in British high society. John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, started the habit of ordering pieces of cold beef between two pieces of bread in order to get a late-night snack without having to leave the gaming table or use a knife and fork.
This newly-created snack kept hands clean so card players could continue on without dirtying their cards. The midnight snack quickly became popular among everyday people, and before long everyone was making their own sandwiches. That is how the sandwich was invented and got its name.
Away from the world of food, there are more examples of names inspired by people. Long johns, the warm trousers that keep us warm in winter, are said to have been named after the US boxer John L. Sullivan who took to wearing a similar type of garment in the ring (比赛).
There are many other interesting etymologies(词源) in the English language like these. So the next time you find an interesting name, why not explore its history too?
(1)、What does the underlined word "overwhelmed" in the first paragraph probably mean?A、Puzzled. B、Excited. C、Worried. D、Annoyed.(2)、Where does the jack fruit's name come from?A、A place in India. B、An Indian word. C、A Portuguese explorer. D、A discoverer of the fruit.(3)、What do we know about the sandwich according to the text?A、It was named after a popular card game. B、It was once eaten as a snack in the daytime. C、It was first popular among the UK's middle class. D、It was created for the convenience of playing cards.(4)、What is the author's purpose in writing this article?A、To raise readers' interest in etymology. B、To introduce things named after people. C、To stress the importance of learning history. D、To explain the effects of people's names on food. -

The other day, Dino, our neighbor across the road, saw me in front of our new home in Italy and called out, "Good evening!" His English, though limited, is much better than my Italian. "You OK?" he asked.
He had greeted me before, usually with a good morning or a good evening. Once, seeing him trying to fix a tall street lamp, I'd held the ladder for him to climb. But that was pretty much it for us: a general air of friendliness, nothing more.
I'd just concluded 46 years living in New York City. But now I'm living in a town in Italy's Puglia region, and everyone here except my family is a stranger. And, living in the countryside as we do, I've started to sense pains of being disconnected.
This moment therefore seemed an opportunity to get to know Dino a little. I could have stayed behind our gates to talk with him through his gates. But instead I went across the road toward him. I stood in the street talking with Dino and his wife, Grazia — I in English, they in Italian. One minute later they invited me in for a tour.
Here was a fig tree, bearing ripe figs. Dino picked a few of the fruits, tore one in half, and put one-half in his mouth. He handed me the other half and signaled to me to follow suit, and I did.
"Delicious!" I declared.
I once saw a wonderful documentary about Gregory Peck. In it, the older actor travels to Ireland to meet his new grandson. But first, wandering a field, he happens upon a fig tree. He picks a fig and eats it with obvious delight. To me, the scene captures the sweetness of life and how such sweetness is all around us—if only we'd bother to reach out and taste it.
Dino and I repeated this sequence with trees bearing plums and walnuts, too—he picking, I tasting. Despite our differences in language—neither of us knew many of the other's words— nothing important was lost. Both of us understood all we needed to understand: that now we were true neighbors.
(1)、What is the author's current feeling about the new living situation?A、He feels happy and content with his move. B、He feels separated and kind of lonely in the new town. C、He feels homesick and wants to go back to New York City. D、He feels thrilled to meet new people in the new community.(2)、Why did the author cross the road toward Dino?A、To help Dino fix the street lamp. B、To become more familiar with Dino. C、To hold the ladder for Dino to climb. D、To avoid talking with Dino behind the gates.(3)、What did Dino do while showing the author around?A、He picked fruits for the author to taste. B、He showed off his private possessions. C、He told the story of his family members. D、He taught the author how to plant fruit trees.(4)、What does the author want to prove by recalling the documentary?A、The fig is really the sweetest fruit. B、Fig trees can survive in any places. The Amazing Day I Learnt to Swim
There are certain days when we feel our lives change greatly—days we remember for a lifetime. Such, for me, was one morning in July in the Ligonier Valley of Pennsylvania, at a place called Devil's Hole.
On that morning, my twin brother Roger and I had finished our chores, and the whole day lay before us. "Let's go to Devil's Hole," Roger suggested. I readily agreed, but for all my eagerness there was a feeling of restlessness deep in my heart. Although he had never said a word about it and never laughed at me, Roger could swim and I could not. I had been too afraid to try. Now Roger could slip through the water expertly with the experienced, confident older kids.
Roger led the way to the kitchen door. "Grandma, can we go to Devil's Hole?" We leaned against the screen, peering into the dark kitchen. Grandma, busy baking cakes stood at the kitchen counter. "Well, I guess the big kids are up there now, but mind the road and be careful in that place," warned Grandma.
With a yell, Roger pushed open the screen door, dashed through the kitchen and climbed up the stairs. I followed racing to get into my bathing suit. Throwing towels around our necks, we ran across the field next to our house and headed up the dirt road.
Roger and I reached the destination. Sunlight flooded through a break in the trees. A quiet path of smooth stones and mossy ground led to a deep green pool of icy water reflecting a huge rock on
the opposite bank, partially in the water. The rock was my province and protection. While the others swam, I always pretended to be trying to catch fish along its base with an old tin can.
Roger joined the older boys and girls at once. They excitedly dived in, swam swiftly across the
pool and pulled themselves up on the big rock to feel the sun on the skin, their shouts, splashes and laughter echoing (回响) through the trees.

It appears that language can have a fascinating effect on the way we think about time and space. A growing number of(expert) believe language can influence how we think just as how language develops can(shape) by our thoughts and culture.
In English and many other European languages, we(typical) view the past as being behind us and the future in front of us. In Swedish, for example, the word for future, framtid, literally has the meaning of "front time". But in Aymara, (speak) by the Aymara people live in the Andes in Bolivia, Chile, Peru and Argentina, the word for future(mean) "behind time".
is becoming increasingly clear that language is influencing how we think about the world around us and our passage through it, which is not to say that one language is(good) than another. But being aware of how languages differ can help you think and communicate more effectively. And while mastering more languages won't necessarily make you genius, we all can gain a fresh perspective and a more flexible (understand) of the world by learning a new language.

Do you have days when you stare into the mirror and can't help but feel like something is missing? It's reminding you to fully maximize your potential. In other words, it's telling you to become the best version of yourself. To help you get started, we've listed four tips below.
It's quite understandable that, because of our nature as human beings, to a certain extent, people's opinions about us influence how we see ourselves. Choose not to care about what others think or say. Otherwise, you'll be held back from performing those activities that draw you closer to your goals.
Try new things.
Try to explore new opportunities because only then can you be able to discover yourself and figure out what the best version of yourself might be. This allows you to work towards it. Think of failure as a lesson that teaches you what not to do next time you find yourself in such a situation.
Surround yourself with a good circle.
You wish to one day live a successful life, but if you're surrounded by people with negative emotions, it is highly doubtful that you will get to attain that goal because the people around you are going to keep holding you down.
Quit Procrastinating (拖延).
Don't give opportunities for the words, "I would do it later" and "it can wait" to pop up in your head. Treat every task given to you as a top priority. When you choose to embrace procrastination, you create room for laziness, which results in unproductivity.
A. Also, don't be scared to fail.B. But it is easier said than done.
C. Stop seeking approval from others.
D. Take others' advice into consideration.
E. You can be as good as those you hang out with.
F. You might thus never know the limit of your abilities.
G. You need to think of goals leading to your final destination.

A miniature, shape-shifting robot can melt itself and reform, allowing it to complete tasks in hard-to-access places and even escape cages. It could eventually be used as a hands-free soldering (焊接) machine or a tool for taking out swallowed items.
Carmel Majidi at Carnegie Mellon University and his colleagues created a millimeter-sized robot that can not only shape-shift, but also become stronger or weaker by alternating (交替) between being a liquid and a solid. When solid, the material was strong enough to support an object 30 times its own mass. To make it soften or melt as needed for different tasks, the researchers put it near magnets ( 磁 体 ), whose magnetic fields applied forces on the tiny magnetic pieces in the robot, moving them and changing the shape of surrounding metal in different directions. They also used a stronger field to pull the particles upwards, making the robot jump.
When Majidi and his colleagues used an alternating magnetic field, electrons in the robot's liquid metal formed electric currents. The coursing of these currents through the robot's body heated it up and eventually made it melt. Using this flexibility, the team made two robots carry and solder a small light bulb onto a circuit board. When they reached their target, the robots simply melted over the light bulb's edges to solder it to the board. Electricity could then run through their liquid metal bodies and light the bulb.
Finally, they shaped the robot like a Lego minifigure, then helped it escape from a cage by melting it and making it flow out between the bars.
The robots could be used for emergency fixes in situations where human or traditional robotic hands become impractical, says Li Zhang at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. For example, a liquefied robot might replace a lost part on a spacecraft by flowing into its place and then solidifying, he says.

Did you know that cutting meat and dairy products from your diet can reduce your food carbon footprint by 73%? It's likely you've heard similar statistics before, which might have even grabbed your attention long enough to try a plant-based lifestyle for a while. However, for some, cutting out delicious meaty products forever seems too restrictive to sustain long term.
It's true that we're creatures of habit, so the dishes we love might be difficult to give up even when we intend to do so. But all the exciting new food technology could greatly change the way we consume food. Usually consisting of soy, grain or pea protein bases, fake meat hamburgers use around 90% less water than their beef stuff, so for all those looking to make a change without changing their diet, this could be wonderful news.
However good this may sound, it's not a perfect system. Meat alternatives have their c onstraints too, but the good still far outweighs the bad when used to replace red meat. If health is a big concern for you, you might be better off sticking to vegetables and enjoying fake meat as a treat as some brands can be overprocessed or may not contain sufficient nutrients.
Currently, companies are racing to create the first "lab grown" meat products as a simple answer to everyone's concerns. However, with all the moral concerns, questions about health and cost of production being extremely high, this is a long way from becoming a reality in mass production.
The exciting thing to take from this, whichever side you may be on, is that the fake meat industry is growing at such a rapid speed. It's bound to produce a practical sustainable option soon, so keep watching this space.
(1)、What is the function of the first paragraph?A、To give a definition. B、To lead in the topic. C、To provide statistics. D、To support the argument.(2)、What is the highlight of fake meat hamburgers?A、They are nutritious. B、They are delicious. C、They are eco-friendly. D、They are money-saving.(3)、What does the underlined word in paragraph 3 probably mean?A、Values. B、Flavors. C、Advantages. D、Limitations.(4)、How might the future of the fake meat industry be?A、Worrying. B、Promising. C、Disappointing. D、Unpredictable. -

Kristin Schell is the founder of The Turquoise Table, a movement of ordinary people who want to create community in their own front yards. Ten years ago, she and her husband and their four children moved to a new home in Austin, Texas.
One day, Kristin needed backyard furniture for a party and bought some picnic tables from Lowe's. The delivery driver set one table down in her front yard by mistake. After the party, she painted the table turquoise (青绿色)—her favorite color—and put it in the front yard.
That turquoise table became the place where Kristin and her kids hung out. They played games, did crafts and ate snacks. Neighbors began to stop by to introduce themselves and sit down for a chat. Kristin invited people to join her at the table for coffee or iced tea. Construction workers on jobs in the neighborhood took their lunch breaks at the table. A babysitter walking by with her young charges sat down to rest. Then neighbors asked Kristin if their family could put a picnic table in their front yard too. A movement came into being.
People often hesitate to invite others into their homes. They think their house is too messy, it's not big enough or they don't have enough time. However, Kristin's picnic table takes away the excuses and the pressure.
"Hospitality (好客) doesn't merely mean entertaining people with a meal or a big party. At the picnic table, all I have to do is to show up. " She likes how it enables her to take a small step toward easing loneliness and building relationships in her community.
A decade after their Texas beginnings, thousands of Turquoise Tables exist in all 50 states and in 13 countries around the world. Not all of them are actually turquoise. "No matter what color it is, it's a friendship table," Kristin says.

D、It enables people to create community behind their house.(2)、How is Kristin most likely to show her hospitality?A、By offering a big feast. B、By holding a fantastic party. C、By providing babysitting service. D、By turning up at the table.(3)、What can we infer about the Turquoise Table movement from the text?A、It helps build colleague relationships. B、It will become less popular in the future. C、It will continue to work all over the world. D、It helps Kristin to keep her loneliness at bay.(4)、Which of the following can best describe Kristin Schell?A、Caring and friendly. B、Polite and determined. C、Energetic and courageous. D、Cooperative and ambitious.
