"Regrets, I've had a few. But then again, too few to mention," Frank Sinatra chanted in his 1969 hit "My Way". The song's idea is attractive: that anyone can just declare what's done is done and move on. Some take the declaration a step further and claim they have no regrets at all. Whether a boast or an actual attitude, "no regrets" suggests that life can and should be lived without looking through the rear-view mirror.

Easier said than done, though. In 2020, author Daniel H. Pink launched the World Regret Survey, the largest ever survey on the topic. With his research team, Pink asked more than 15,000 people in 105 countries, "How often do you look back on your life and wish you had done things differently?" 82% said regret is at least an occasional part of their life; roughly 21% said they feel regret "all the time." Only 1% said they never feel regret.

If you are of the "no regrets" type, you might think that all this regret is a recipe for unhappiness. But that isn't the case. True, being overwhelmed by regret is indeed bad for you. But going to the other extreme may be even worse. To rid yourself of regrets doesn't free you from shame or sorrow; it leads you to make the same mistakes again and again. To truly get over our guilt requires that we put regret in its proper place.

As uncomfortable as it is, regret is an amazing cognitive ( 认 知 ) achievement. If today your relationship with your partner has soured, your regret might mentally take you back to last year. You would remember your being mean and sensitive, and then imagine yourself showing more patience, being kind instead of hurtful at key moments. Then you would fast-forward to today and see how your relationship could be progressing instead of languishing.

But regret doesn't have to be left unmanaged. The trick is to accept it and use it for learning and improvement. You can be honest with yourself about what went wrong and use that knowledge to enjoy better relationships in the future.

Some new comets( 彗 星 ) have been discovered accidentally by amateur( 业 余 的 ) astronomers. Surprisingly a few bright comets have been discovered with the naked eye(肉眼) by members of the general public. However, a great number of comets are found by comet hunters carrying out telescope searches of chosen areas of the night sky.

As the movement of all comets is directed around the Sun and because these bodies brighten as they move towards the Sun, there is a greater possibility for the discovery of a new comet in the skies towards the Sun rather than away from the Sun's direction. This means that searches should be put on the western sky after evening light and on the eastern sky before morning light.

From the astronomical point there is no time during the year which is the best for the discovery of new comets. A search can be done at any time providing there is no bright Moon.

Studies done on the discovery conditions of comets discovered before show that more comets have been discovered in the morning sky than in the evening sky. Thus the smart comet hunter should make sure that morning activity receives as much if not more attention than any evening effort.

In recent times, the use of advanced CCD technology to discover objects close to the Earth will in the future greatly reduce the chances of new comets being found with small telescopes. An example of the new technology is the very successful LINEAR program operating in New Mexico. However, until a similar system is based in the southern half of the Earth there will continue to be chances for the discovery of new comets which come from the south.

Climbing, I once thought, was a very manly activity, but as I found my way into this activity, I came to see that something quite different happens on the rock.

Like wild swimming, rock climbing involves you into the landscape. On the rock, I am fully present. Eyes pay close attention, ears are alert, and hands move across the surface. Unlike walking, where I could happily wander about absent-mindedly, in climbing, attentive observation is extremely important.

As an arts student studying English literature, I discovered a new type of reading from outdoor climbing. Going out on to the crags(悬崖), I saw how you can learn to read the rocks and develop a vocabulary of physical movements. Good climbers knew how to map their bodies on to the stone. Watching them, I wanted to possess that skillful language.

My leap happened when I worked for the Cairngorms National Park Authority. Guiding my explorations into this strange new landscape was Nan Shepherd. Unlike the goal-directed mindset of many mountaineers, she is not concerned with peaks or personal beats. Shepherd sees the mountain as a total environment and she celebrates the Caingorms as a place alive with plants, rocks, animals and elements. Through her generous spirit and my own wanderings, I saw that rock climbing need not be a process of testing yourself against anything. Rather, the intensity of focus could release you into another way of being.

Spending so much time in high and stony places has changed my view on the world and our place in it. I have come into physical contact with processes that go way beyond the everyday. Working with gravity, geology, rhythms of weather and deep time, I gain an actual relationship with the earth. This connection lies at the heart of my passion for rock climbing. I return to the rocks, because this is where I feel in touch — with our land.

Cut back online shopping

We've all done it, surfed the net at lunch or late at night, aimlessly dropping virtual bargains in our virtual basket and hitting the virtual checkout button. However, the resulting damage to your bank balance is all too real. Why do you think online retailers( 零售商) keep your credit card details on file? So you can just press ‘Buy' and they've got your cash. Again and again. But all you end up with is loads of goods you wouldn't otherwise have bought. If you're tempted(诱惑), be strict, put the mouse down and ask yourself: "Do I really need this?" The answer is most probably: "No".

It was a sunny morning six months ago. Henry, a teenager boy, had been walking down the sidewalk. When he made way for an old lady, he fell to the ground. His heart suddenly stopped.

However, Henry was fortunate enough to fall in front of a faith-based shelter for home less people in transitional housing (过渡房) based in Hyannis, Massachusetts. A 54-year-old resident David was working inside it when he heard someone outside screaming for help. He ran to the scene as soon as possible.

David, who had just been given CPR (心肺复苏) training with all the staff and residents of the shelter a few days previously, ran over to Henry's motionless body and started giving first aid. He had been conducting CPR for ten minutes before medical staff arrived and loaded Henry into the ambulance.

Henry was born with a kind of heart disease. The disease was deadly especially when it struck on the road. Thanks to David's immediate action. Henry was saved in time. In no time, Henry's father Sam came to the hospital and said thanks to David and the doctors over again and again. One of Henry's attending doctors said. "No one could believe it. Generally speaking, if you're not in the hospital and go into shock from a heart attack, you won't survive it. Even if you're in the hospital, the result may be the same."

A resident in the shelter said, "David is a nice, lovely and reliable man. He is very organized and always arranges things perfectly. So I know he can deal with the emergency." Of course, David could made it because he had been volunteering to serve the homeless since childhood. But something unexpected caused him to be homeless and end up in the shelter.

As a means of thanking David for helping to save his son from certain death, Sam created a page to raise money for David. "David is doing everything right to escape his homelessness, but the barrier is huge. Chances of escaping homelessness are about as slim as walking away from a heart attack," he said.

A Meaningful English Speaking Contest

Since ancient times, human beings have tried to explore space and find other life forms. They even tended (improve) the moon's environment to support life. It was the first time that they had grown plants in the lunar soil. The scientists said they had no idea whether anything (grow) in the moon dirt. They wanted to see if it could be used to grow food. The results surprised them.

Ferl is one of the (professor) in the University of Florida's institute, and he was (amaze) at the results. "Plants (actual) grow in the soil of the moon," he said. Ferl and other researchers planted thale cress(拟南芥), a small flowering plant in lunar soil. The good news was that all the seeds grew. The bad news was that after  first week, the lunar soil put too much pressure on the plants, (cause) then to grow slowly. The majority  the moon plants ended up stunted—meaning small or not fully developed.

The longer the soil was exposed to solar radiation and wind on the moon, the (bad) the plants seemed to be. The soil,  was collected by the Apollo 11 mission, was the least helpful for growth because it had been exposed for a couple billion years.

I had the most wonderful experience with a taxi driver yesterday and it really made my day.

Last afternoon, I was going from my home to a supermarket. I wouldn't be long there because I had 1  in walking. Using a walking stick, I stopped a taxi. The driver went out of his way to 2  me. He told me that he wanted to 3  up a few things. "I am happy to turn off the meter(计程表) and then start it again when we 4  back." In that case, it was 5  cheaper for me to book his taxi to go home than to pay two 6  booking fees. I responded, "Thanks, sir."

Then he went 7  with me and meanwhile waited for me. He had just gone through the checkout as I was lining up to 8 . When he saw me coming out, he helped me carry my things to the 9  and supported me into it. When we got back to my place, he parked his car as 10  to my door as possible to save me a bit of 11 . He even carried all of those things to the front door with a smile along the way. What a 12  and caring gentleman!

Today, I plan to write the 13  experience on my blog where I will 14  him. I truly believe he is a jewel and worthy of being thought highly of. 15  it with the whole world is really worthwhile!

As we know, forming a good personality is very useful for everyone. You can improve your personality with some suggestions given below.

●  It has been proved that intelligence can be divided into many classes. Many times school top students also lose out in their careers because adjustment with knowledge in a career field requires the specific type of ability to make wise decisions.

● Moral principle and awareness.  If you are aware, you will do your work with complete honesty and determination. It is clear that persons like you don't need to be watched over at work. Since you know your responsibilities, you will be successful in your field.

● Openness. If you have the ability to hug something with an open heart then undoubtedly you can learn a lot. This ability makes you win popularity with your friends because you do not hesitate to learn even from your younger ones.  Always remember if your personality is like that—having the ability to accept the right thing, you are successful.

● Communication. The role of conversation is important in developing personality. Your speaking ability not only makes you popular but also gives you success. So your pronunciation should be clear. Along with speaking, it is also important to have the art of listening. Be-sides, take special care of your body language too. 

● Teamwork. Effective teamwork is the key to the strength of an organization.  Characteristics of an effective team include a high degree of interaction with people inside and outside the group and a healthy amount of disagreement and creativity.

If there was any doubt about whether the world has entered a new space race, the competition of lunar-bound launch this month could be the smoking gun. After NASA canceled two launch attempts in late August and early September-followed by delays(延期) caused by Hurricane Ian and Tropical Storm Nicole—the US space agency tried again to send up its first Artemis mission.

That period fits in with that of another mission less-known in the United States. A Japanese commercial company focusing on building moon landers launched on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket on Dec. 11, 2022 in the US.

"We recognize that a launch of NASA's is scheduled during the same timeframe, and we believe this sends the message that a new age is opening for the cislunar economy(地月经济) with these two historic missions—one government and one commercial," the company said in a statement.

NASA happens to be one of the company's customers, hoping to receive moon dust samples from the private lander's trip. However, the plan failed on Apr. 26, 2023. If the Tokyo-based company had succeeded, it would have been the first to land a Japanese spacecraft on the moon. What's more, it could have been the first successful private delivery of cargo to the lunar surface ever.

Brad Jolliff, director of the McDonnell Center for the Space Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, believes the next five years will be full of commercial missions to perform landings, deliver more goods to the moon, and promote science experiments. In Brad's opinion, the new age of lunar exploration and travel won't be done entirely by NASA. It will be done with international partners and with commercial partners.
