BEAUTIFUL IRELAND AND ITS TRADITIONS

Ireland has beautiful countryside, which has always had a great influence its people and traditions. In the long history of it, there （be）many great writers and poets. The beautiful countryside excites and inspires people,（offer）something for each of the senses. In 2019, I went on a winter break（休息）trip with my family. One of our 1 was London. The first thing that I 2 when I landed in London was the weather. It was too 3 for my liking as it required me to wear a thick jacket.

It's the end of August, and it's time to start thinking about going back to school. For some, it's a very exciting time. For others, however, they can feel very stressful. There are lots of things to do if you want to have a great first day at school.

Stay busy throughout the summer holiday. Usually those who struggle（挣扎）on their first days are people who spend too much of their summer holiday indoors and relaxing. So you should try to stay active and busy over the course of the holiday. There are lots of things you can do, such as getting a summer job or taking up a sport.

Continue learning over the summer holiday. People who struggle the most at first are those who aren't learning over the holiday. Learning itself doesn't have to be boring! You can learn about anything you want. Simply keeping your brain in the habit of learning will give you an extra advantage when it's time to go back to school.

Spend time with friends that will attend the same school. If you have any friends living in the same neighborhood, there are chances that（有可能）you will go to the same school! Make a point of creating stronger bonds（关系）with those friends. Spend part of your summer holiday with them, and grow closer. While there's always some worry about going into the first day of school, having friends around that care about you makes it much easier.

Buy your school supplies. The most important thing you can do in preparation for your first day is make sure you have all of the equipment you need. Though the types of materials you'll need differ from class to class, certain things, like pens and paper, will be used for all classes.

Joshua Countryman, the Henry Sibley High School choir（唱诗班）director, was invited by his school to make a video to cheer up sheltered-at-home students this spring. After asking the teachers in his school to record themselves singing Cyndi Lauper's "True Colors," Countryman turned the voices and videos into a virtual choir posted on YouTube.

Then he let his school choirs go virtual, too: not with just one song but with all 13 songs they had been practising for their spring performance. In the end, he created a special concert. "I don't like to lose," said Countryman. "To give up on a concert experience, to me, that felt like a loss. It was important that we could get a win."

During the coronavirus pandemic（冠状病毒流行病）, virtual choirs have been popping up all over Minnesota（明尼苏达洲）. Singers sing at home, with their voices and faces all edited together and shown in online videos. Colleges have made virtual choir videos. Children's Theatre made one of "Tomorrow" from the musical "Annie", its postponed（ 推迟的）spring show.

"It was stressful at first. I overthought a lot of things," said choir student Tamit Weldeyesus. "I probably had to record the first song 20 or 25 times, and I kept telling myself that this had to be perfect because if it was not, everyone could hear my mistakes. After Mr. Countryman showed us what to do, my problems were all solved. It was a lot easier than I had expected."

After spending half the spring conducting online classes and organizing the virtual choir concert, Countryman said, "The virtual choir creates an excellent opportunity to really make assessments（评价）for each student. Even if we go back to school every day, the virtual component（组成部分）is going to have to be important at least in my class because of that huge risk of increased virus transmission（病毒传播）in the choir."

Ranjan and Sumer were good friends. They went to the same school and were in the same class.

Ranjan was not strong. He could not play football or other games with boys of his age. All that he did was to watch Sumer and other boys play. He usually went with them to the playground. When they ran off to play, he would sit under a tree and read storybooks. Books became his best friends. The reading made him successful in all the exams. He always stood first in the class.

Sumer was tall and athletic. He spent most of his time running, swimming or riding bicycles. He was an extremely good player in every game. He was a member of the school's football team and cricket team. The PE teacher thought he would make it big in the game when he grew up.

One day, the two friends went for a walk. Ranjan got tired soon.

"I have no strength. What is the use of all this knowledge? If I am not healthy? I would give away all my knowledge if I could be half as healthy and strong as you," said Ranjan.

Sumer was surprised and replied, "So you are not happy with yourself too? I always wished I could have done as well as you did in the studies. I even thought I could have given away my sporting skills for better grades in those exams."

The two friends looked at each other and cried out at the same time? "The grass looks greener on the other side of the hill."

Long long ago, there was an old man who lived with his son, his daughter-in-law, and a four-year-old grandson. The old man's hands trembled（颤抖）, his eyesight was very poor, and he couldn't walk steadily（平稳地）. The family ate together nightly at the dinner table. But the elderly grandfather's shaky hands and failing sight made eating rather difficult. Rice often dropped on the floor.

The words struck the parents so hard that they were in silence. Then tears started to stream down their cheeks（脸颊）.

Though no word was spoken, both knew what must be done. That evening the husband took grandfather's hand and gently led him back to the family table.

For as long as he could remember, Jack had dreamed of being in the Olympics. For years he had worked hard to become a good skater, training and practicing. He was always getting better. Now he and his teammates, on behalf of the American skating team, were in a city of Italy for the Winter Olympics.

They were on their way to the opening parade. Athletes from all over the world were gathering to march into the Olympic stadium. Jack and his partners were laughing and joking, and their hearts were beating with joy. Everything was perfect -well, almost everything except that the sleeve (袖子) of Jack's Olympic jacket had been torn. He loved the red, white and blue jacket, with the Olympic rings on the back. But earlier that day he had torn it by accident.

"Too bad about your jacket," his friend Bill told him. "Oh, I don't think anyone will notice it," said Jack. "The audience will probably notice it," said Bill, "They'll probably laugh at us."

Suddenly, a little Italian girl came up to Jack and pointed right at the tear in his sleeve. Jack smiled at her, not knowing what to do. So he said, "Uh, good morning!" The little girl smiled at him. And she kept speaking Italian words that Jack couldn't understand, when she was pointing to his torn sleeve. Jack looked at his friends and said, "I don't know what she wants. The little girl began pulling Jack's jacket.

Her eyes were very bright and her long blond hair fell over the back of her winter coat. "What are you doing?" Jack asked, but he knew she couldn't understand him. Suddenly, she started taking off her own coat. Then she looked up at him. "She wants you to take off your jacket!" Bill said. "Oh, I get it, said Jack." She wants to try it on. Sure, here you go."

He took off the jacket and handed it to the girl. She took it. But when he raised his head again, she was running off with his jacket. "Hey!" he cried. "The little thief!" Bill shouted angrily. "She is stealing it!" Jack ran a few steps after her.

Many foods need to be properly preserved. If not, they (end) up rotting. For centuries, people worldwide used many (nature) ways to preserve foods for later consumption. Europeans in the Middle Ages were no exception. As we all know, a society largely (rely) on agriculture would be highly aware of the (necessary) to store up foods in case of famine(饥荒), wars, etc.

One of the (approach) to food preservation in the Middle Ages in Europe is air drying. method can be used to preserve all sorts of foods. Grains and fruits were dried in the sun or air before (store) in a dry place. In Scandinavia, temperatures would drop below freezing in winter, cod(鳕鱼肉) was left out to dry in the cold air.

Other types of meat could also be preserved through air drying, usually after the meat was cut into thin pieces and (light) salted. In warmer areas, it was simple to dry meat under the hot summer sun. In places with cooler climates, air drying could be done throughout the year, either the open air or inside shelters.
