A Bristol teacher has proved that you don't have to earn a fortune to be able to make ends meet. Kath Kelly spent a year living on just one pound per day. This money did not include the rent of her room on a shared flat or the utility bills(水电费), which were all paid in advance. 

The motivation for the experiment came from her concern about buying a wedding present for her brother and his fiancée. At the time she had an income of $10,000a year, which meant that she was fairly hard up most of the time.

If she spent less than $1 a day, she could not carry the money over. She also decided not to borrow from friends.

Kath was often attending free events, from book launches to gallery openings...  Buses were out, so every journey had to be made on foot or by bicycle, and as she couldn't afford phone calls, she would visit friends or leave them notes if she had anything to tell them. "Instead of meeting for lunch in a cafe as we used to, we'd take sandwiches and eat them on a bench in the park," she explains.

At the end of the year, Kath was able to buy her brother and his new wife a $1,300 life membership of the National Trust as a wedding present with her savings. While helping out on a farm she met her current boyfriend and found true love at last.

Food

Come mealtime, astronauts will have a special dining kitchen. Space food just keeps getting better—and more like food we enjoy here on Earth. Sleep

Each crew member has a private room. With no gravity, they'll need to tie themselves to their beds, or they will float away! That might sound like a strange way to sleep, but astronauts from past space missions report that sleeping in space is actually pretty great! Exercise

You might not think it, but exercise is even more important on the station than it is on Earth. There is not much gravity in space. Astronauts don't stand up, sit down or walk in space, so their muscles and bones don't have to work much—and this muscle and bone loss can be dangerous back on Earth. To fight this, astronauts on the station will exercise on bikes, rowing machines, and other equipment about two hours every day.

Clothing

Astronauts will have to wear special space suits while travelling aboard the U.S. shuttle or Russian rockets. But once they're safe inside the space station, crew members can wear regular clothing. Of course, a specially designed, pressurized space suit is required for space walks. It has to bear flying pieces and protect the astronauts from dramatic temperature changes. It can range from -84℃ in the shadow of the station to 121℃ in the hot sun.

Personal Cleanliness

Simple tasks like brushing your teeth can be challenging in a weightless environment. A little water doesn't flow in a stream. Astronauts will use a freshwater hose(软管) to take showers, shampoo, and wash off—then a second vacuum hose to suction(吸) off the dirty water. And how do you go to the bathroom in space? With a special "air toilet" that uses flowing air instead of water to get rid of waste.

Alibaba Cloud and the Hangzhou city government announced the launch of ET City Brain 2.0, a cloud-powered and AI-driven urban traffic-management system that aims to increase the city's efficiency.

After over two years of testing in Alibaba's home base, ET City Brain has become the new infrastructure (基础设施) for Hangzhou, with a total coverage of 420 square kilometers in area, including over 1,300 traffic lights. Over 200 traffic officers are connected via mobile phones, enabling them to receive real-time alerts on any traffic-related emergencies.

In version 2.0, the system will optimize the city's firefighting abilities by providing key information to firefighters, such as water pressure, the number and position of fire hydrants (消防栓) in a given area, the location of gas pipes and other details they need to know. The information is instant, making the entire firefighting process faster, safer and more accurate.

City Brain gives meaning to data. By using AI and advanced algorithms (计算程序), City Brain is able to analyze a large amount of data and turn them into useful information in real-time speed.

As a result of City Brain's ability to predict traffic flow, detect accidents and provide instant feedback, Hangzhou has dropped from 5th to the 57th on the list of China's most congested cities. Hangzhou is probably the only city that can tell you how many cars are on the street at any given time.

In the case of medical emergencies, City Brain is able to change traffic lights, so emergency vehicles like ambulances and fire trucks can head to the scene without interruption, accelerating their arrival time by 49%.

Dr. Wang Jian, head of Alibaba's Technology Steering Committee who invented the term "City Brain"，said the system is designed to empower a city to act quickly and directly. It is more than just about traffic management. It's really about how to make city more livable at a time of shrinking natural resources around the globe. "It is a matter of sustainability, while using as little natural resources as possible," Wang said, "This is just the beginning."

Ranjan and Summer were good friends. They went to the same school and were in the same class.

Mount Kilimanjaro

I met the Man of the Trees in summer ten years ago, when I was visiting Uncle Jita.

Those were difficult times. People were cutting down our forest, and there was often flooding. Sometimes our water supply was dirty. When our pump did have clean water, we had to wait in line for ages. When the pump wasn't working, we had to walk five kilometres to the closest stream.

But I was happy. I was going to see my favorite uncle. When the day finally arrived, Dad drove me to Uncle Jita's house and left. Once he saw me, Uncle Jita announced, "Tomorrow we're going to explore a magical place. Here is my camera, Amy. You can take photos of what you see."

The following day, we woke up and left early on a boat. The trip was exciting. But when we got off, there was ... nothing in front of us. "I don't want to take pictures of this," I complained.

Uncle laughed, "Start walking, Amy. I promise you'll be surprised." After some time, I could see the outline of a forest in the distance. A little closer, there was a man waving to us.

"That's Kabir. The forest you see is his. He planted every single tree." As we walked towards Kabir, Uncle explained that thirty years ago, the whole area was a wasteland. But one day Kabir decided to change all that and started planting trees. Thanks to him, part of the wasteland is now a paradise(天堂).

Uncle introduced me to Kabir, who had gray hair and a determined face. "Jita told me you like animals. Are you ready to see some?" he asked. "Of course!" I replied. We continued walking and soon were under the trees. I turned my head and was amazed at the difference between the two places. All because of the efforts of one man.

Like Uncle said, Kabir's forest was magical. We saw deer, rhinos, and even tigers. During lunchtime, Kabir explained how, by planting trees, it was possible to stop the land from eroding(侵蚀).

As an epic which brings back to life some of the most iconic poets from the Tang Dynasty (618-907), the highly anticipated animated movie Chang'an (release) nationwide on July 8.

The film is the seventh production of Light Chaser Animation Studios, often (refer) to as "China's Pixar" because of its successes since its (establish) in 2013. It gained an 8 out of 10 rating on the Chinese film and review website Douban, (unusual) high for a Chinese animated movie.

With a runtime of 168 minutes — the (long) of any Chinese animated movie to date Chang'an presents the decades-long friendship of Li Bai, and Gao Shi, his close friend and renowned poet, during the dynasty's transition from peak prosperity to the turmoil (动乱). Xie Junwei, co-directs the movie with Zou Jing, says that he has made multiple trips to Xi'an in search of inspiration during the creative process. He revealed that the sculptures and ancient paintings exhibited at the Shaanxi History Museum provided them invaluable ideas for the film.

Dexter lives in Ouray, Colorado, where, for the past few years, the two-footed dog has been turning heads wherever he goes. His owner, Kentee Pasek, says 1 on two legs isn't a trick she taught him. Rather, it's a(n) 2 he made after a near-death experience.

Last year, I fell into a deep depression. It was caused by a car accident. I was in physical recovery from the accident and suddenly all of my old hurts started coming up. I found myself crying on the floor of my apartment. I didn't want to feel this way anymore.

Let's pause for a moment. I don't want you to bleed with me or to pity me. But I also don't want to cover my reality. And the truth is, beneath the shiny photos you see on the Internet, I'm still a work in progress. Like all of us, I'm doing the best I can and making the best choices I can. Back to the evening when I found myself lying on the floor.

What happened next? I started writing.

There was a TV show I absolutely loved. I started writing fan fiction. It provided a beautiful place of escape from the thoughts swimming in my head.  I started to feel like myself again.

After completing four-part fan fiction totaling around 12,000 words, I had an idea. I should write a novel to give a hand to those like me.

I continued writing, having no idea where it would lead. I didn't know I would publish it but, after much resistance on my part I finally made the decision to publish the book under my own name. No pen name. No hiding on the deep bowels of the Internet.

And so here we are.  Sure, readers will enjoy the twists and turns. And I can see myself in the character.  I wrote it to help people. To give them a place to belong to. A place to talk about this fictional world. The very same thing that saved me last year.

Recycling is a great way of doing your bit for the environment and helping to protect the earth's precious resources. However, a new study has revealed that our desire to be sustainable may be doing more harm than good. According to waste company Biffa, this is because of "wish-cycling" — assuming that items such as disposable coffee cups and pizza boxes will be recycled if put in the recycling bin. In fact, pollution from those items or other non-recyclables can result in recyclable items that have been put in the correct bin going to landfill. David Heaton, a business director at Biffa, said: "Pollution happens when items are disposed of in the wrong bins or haven't been cleaned before being recycled."

Experts at Biffa analyzed the amounts of non-target and non-recyclable materials that entered UK material recycling facilities between 2016 and 2020. It was found that, in 2016, the average pollution rate of recycling waste was 13.4 percent, rising over four years to 17 percent by the end of 2020. This shows that, even as people are becoming more eco-conscious, wish-cycling is increasing both in households and businesses.

The Biffa experts say that one of the best ways to prevent pollution of recycling is to clean recyclable waste before putting it in the bin. They suggest cutting off the top of old pizza boxes and only recycling that part to avoid pollution from the grease (油脂). Check the on-packaging recycling label to check it can actually be recycled. When it comes to plastics, Biffa recommends checking the resin code, the number in the plastic triangle, to know whether it should go in the recycling bin. In general, resin codes 1, 2, 4 and 5 are recyclable, while 3, 6 and 7 are not. Larger items, like electronics, furniture and batteries, can also be recycled but often cannot go in household recycling bins as they need specialist separating. These will need to be taken to recycling centers or sustainable waste management companies.

"It's vital as a nation that we get better at effective ‘pre-cycling'—sorting waste correctly before collection to reduce pollution rates," added Mr. Heaton.

In the world of online shopping, many online purchases are based on careful consideration of star ratings and product reviews left by complete strangers. But should you trust customer reviews when deciding what to purchase? And do these mysterious reviewers have your best interests in mind? Here's what you need to know.

Consumers today are skeptical, says Zach Pardes at review platform Trustpilot. "We live in a time when trust is completely under attack," Pardes says. "so people are reading reviews and consuming them more than ever before, but I think there is a healthy skepticism at times of what they're reading. Fake(假的) reviews do exist. Fake reviews include, but aren't limited to, robot-generated reviews and reviews that are influenced by the seller."

Of course, not all user reviews you read online are fake. High-quality reviews are a valuable tool when making a variety of purchases. Pardes says Trustpilot features a team in place to detect and remove fake reviews. Perhaps one of the best-known review websites is Yelp. "Yelp takes measures to ensure high-quality content," says Kathleen Liu, a company spokesperson. That includes allowing Yelp's community of business owners and users to flag content that may go against the site's terms of service.

Since user reviews do provide helpful information, review as a whole shouldn't be repudiated. But how can you tell the difference between what's real and what's not? It's close to impossible for the everyday consumer. But if you conduct your investigation carefully, you can make an informed purchase.

Check more than one review source. Pardes advises consumers to read reviews on multiple platforms. "If you're about to book a $10,000 vacation, you'd never rely only on the photos and the reviews posted by that hotel's marketing team," he says. "You are going to want to use a third-party independent resource." Read more than a handful of reviews. Pardes says there is "safety in numbers." Question perfection. Pardes says consumers shouldn't trust reviews that show only five stars. "Nobody's perfect so you can't possibly have a perfect five-star review in every single category of your business." he says.

The new member to the UAE's astronaut training program, the first female Emirati (阿联酋) astronaut, hopes that her mechanical engineering degree will be her ticket to the moon.

Nora AlMatrooshi and her fellow trainee astronaut Mohammad AlMulla were selected from 4000 highly qualified candidates to lead the nation's 9.8 million citizens into space.

The two are looking forward to the laborious 30-month program ahead of them which has already begun with them getting their divers' licences, picking up the Russian language and coaching for their many media interviews—and will move on to flight and weightlessness school at the Johnson Space Centre in Texas and eventually cruel survival training.

"They will need mechanical engineers to build a base on the moon," says the 28-year-old, who represented her nation at the Mathematics Olympics and worked as an engineer at the National Petroleum Construction Company.

AlMatrooshi says she has dreamed of the stars since kindergarten, when her teacher set up the classroom as the Lunar surface and the five-year-old future astronaut constructed a cardboard moonbase. That early longing to explore space charted her degree choice.

"I actually went after it. I chose to study a degree in mechanical engineering because of a documentary I watched when I was in high school. It was about a group of astronauts going to the International Space Station and the role of the mechanical engineer was highlighted," she said.

Leading big construction projects in the desert has helped equip the daughter of two academics—a PhD father and English teacher mother—for Lunar construction.

AlMatrooshi's fellow trainee astronaut, UAE police helicopter pilot AlMulla, meanwhile says astronaut training has been "a big career change".

"I spent 15 years qualifying to be a pilot, including training in Australia for my commercial pilot's licence," says the father of two. "As a pilot you get used to mastering everything—suddenly I'm changing my path."

"I'm a big fan of SpaceX, the rockets and even the fancy space suits. And hopefully all four of us—and all the astronauts who come after us will get to be a part of future missions—perhaps even to the moon eventually."

I went to a grocery store for candy that afternoon, Honestly speaking, it was Out of my way and out of the circle that I lived my life within, But it was meant for me to be there at this particular time.
