3、 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Language is a part of culture and plays a very important role in it. Yet language is not the only way to express our ideas and feelings. Body movement, eye contact, gesture, and facial expression are other forms of language we call nonverbal communication. According to Social Anthropologist, Edward T. Hall, in a normal conversation between two persons, less than 15% of social meaning is transmitted (传达) by words.
Different cultures have different ways of using nonverbal communication and people have different gestures to convey their expressions. However, nonverbal communication, like traffic, is not random (随意的);it has a purpose. Learning the different common rules of body language in different cultures is very useful for us to understand each other better.
People coming from the same culture share common understanding by using the same body language such as eye management, facial expressions, gestures, and body movements. For example, "arms", which are used little by Nordics during a conversation, are an important element in one's communicative weaponry (武器) in Italy, Spain, and South America. In these cultures, one should stand with feet pressed together and hands interlaced (交错) in front of the body. In cultures such as America, where you often stand with your feet shoulderlength apart, arms at your side, standing in this fashion might be interpreted as being shy and insecure.
A. Misuse of body language can be unpleasant.
B. And there are common rules to guide its flow.
C. Without language, culture would not be possible.
D. Body language makes up the largest part of our nonverbal communication.
E. But in different cultures nonverbal communication takes on different patterns.
F. If you' re learning a new language, a great way is to watch movies and TV shows.
G. In Africa, standing in a too "open" fashion, means that your posture might be inappropriate.

Officials at Northland Pines School District are working with a tech company called Spooky Action on a program to allow students to use the Internet through drones (无人机).
About 10 percent of Northland Pines students don't have any Internet access at home, and as many as 40 percent have poor connection speeds which hardly meet the demands of home learning. District leaders have tried for more than ten years to close that gap, but there are no easy solutions. "We're a district of about 500 square miles and getting Internet connect ion for every family is a challenge," says Harlan Leusink, the director of technology for the district.
The program will use drones that are connected to a power source on the ground and that can stay in the air for weeks and even months. The drones will serve as flying cell towers. However, the purpose of designing drones had nothing to do with the education but it was related to disasters. "A hurricane comes in and blows down all your cell towers; it's pretty easy to put up a flying cell tower," Rahul Tiwari, Spooky Action's CEO, says. "It's not necessary to replace a cell tower. The idea is to quickly meet the Internet needs of a community without having to build a million cell towers everywhere. "
While the drones can stay in the air for more than a month, that's not usually necessary when they provide the Internet for students. Tiwari says the drones will be active during peak class and homework times and won't be flying overnight.
Leusink says his district is looking at the drone service as a proof-of-concept for where and how they need to set up more permanent (永久的) devices. If a drone in a certain area gives students good coverage in that area, he says the next step will be for the district to look for more permanent land-based solutions.
(1)、What problems does Northland Pines School District have?A、It has poor Internet access and connection. B、Internet access at home is impossible there. C、It has difficulty developing its transport services. D、Students there pay little attention to online learning.(2)、Why were Spooky Action's drones designed at first?A、To offer daily supplies after disasters. B、To replace cell towers in remote areas. C、To improve the national educational standards. D、To provide the Internet service during disasters.(3)、What can we infer from what Rahul Tiwari says about drones?A、They have closed the teaching gap. B、They cannot meet students' needs. C、They don't need to work all the time. D、They will fly close to local cell towers.(4)、What step will be taken for the district?A、Developing new-type drones. B、Further testing the drone services. C、Offering more wireless hotspots. D、Building permanent equipment properly. -

Australian magpies (喜鹊) are common in Australia, loved and feared in equal measure. The fear arises from the fact that nesting females aggressively dive at animals, including or perhaps especially humans, often drawing blood. The love comes from the fact that they are simply everywhere, easy to identify, and possessed of a song that has come to represent the sound of nature.
And also, they seem rather clever. Now, research by zoologists at the University of Wester Australia has corroborated this, but their levels of intelligence are dependent on the size of the group they belong to.
To reach this conclusion, the Australian scientist examined 56 birds from 14 groups of wild magpies living in the suburbs of Western Australia's capital city, Perth. The groups ranged between 3 and 12 individuals. Each magpie-tested separately to avoid the risk of it getting help from its mates-was put through four tasks that tested its cognitive(认知的)abilities. These included finding food hidden in a transparent container, finding food hidden in differently colored containers, and a memory test involving finding hidden food. Adult and young birds were tested repeatedly and the results were clear. The birds that lived in larger groups were quicker to master the tasks than those that lived in smaller ones. The difference between intelligent big group members and less intelligent little group members appeared very early in the birds' lives.
In a paper published in the journal Nature, lead author Benjamin Ashton and his colleagues report that birds living in large groups "show increased cognitive performance". Moreover, this "general intelligence factor"is strongly linked to reproductive (生殖的)success in females.
Ashton suggests that the findings indicate the evolution of intelligence is influenced by pressures present in a complex social group. "Our results suggest that the social environment plays a key role in the development of cognition, " he says.
(1)、Which word best describes Australians' feelings about Australian magpies?A、Frightened B、Loving C、Mixed D、Tolerant(2)、What does the underlined word "corroborated" in paragraph 2 mean?A、Assessed B、Confirmed C、Disapproved D、Doubted(3)、How were the magpies treated in the research?A、They were allowed to seek help. B、They were put in containers. C、They were divided into some groups. D、They were studied individually.(4)、Which of the following can be the best title for the text?A、Magpies seem to be more social birds B、Magpies in small groups often perform better C、Large-group living increases magpies' intelligence D、Cognitive levels affect magpies' reproductive success -

Kyra Peralte thought keeping a diary during the pandemic (流行病) might help her sort out her feelings. In April 2020, the mother of two in Montclair, New Jersey, now 46, started writing about the challenges of work, marriage and motherhood during a global crisis. She invited women from near and far to fill the notebook with their own pandemic tales. She named the project The Traveling Diary.
Peralte created a website for people to add their names to the queue. Each person gets to keep the diary for three days and fill as many pages as she wishes. Then she is responsible for mailing it to the next person, whose address Peralte provides. So far, more than 2,000 women from 30 countries have joined in.
The diary reached Colleen Martin in Florham Park, New Jersey, in November 2020. "I had just recently lost my brother. By the time I actually got it and wrote in it, it was much more of a relief," she says. Adding to the diary, she says, helped her look for meaning and "the growth and development that occurs in terrible times. "
Martin shipped off the diary to the next person, and Dior Sarr, 35, received it at her home in Toronto just before the new year. "I wrote about my ambitions(抱负), my goals and how I wanted to step into the new year, " she says, "It felt meaningful to pass on something so personal. It felt like these were women that I had known even though I didn't know them at all. "
Like many of the women who wrote in her diary, Peralte feels a strong bond with the people who filled its pages, none of whom she would have otherwise known. Her idea, Peralte says, has had a great effect on her and, she hopes, the other women who were part of it.
(1)、Why did Peralte start the project "The Traveling Diary"?A、To become famous online. B、To offer women an emotion outlet. C、To meet more people on the Internet. When I was 15, I followed Roy to the deep mountain in search of astragalus root(黄芪), which is a rare and valuable plant.
We searched the plant for a whole day, but without luck. We found nothing. As it got dark, I asked Roy to go back, but he refused and said, "I would rather sleep on the mountain tonight and continue to search tomorrow! "
I desired to go home but I lacked the courage to go back alone, so I chose to stay and help Roy put up a simple tent under a tree. It was freezing cold on the mountain and there were scores of mosquitoes, which made it impossible for us to have a good sleep. What's worse, we heard a wolf howling nearby! I was so scared.
"I heard that wolves bully(欺负)the weak and fear the strong, " Roy told me. "Let's strike the shovel(铲子)and shout to scare it away! " He found a stone and started to strike the shovel. And then he shouted as he struck the shovel. Inspired, I followed him to shout loudly. Half an hour later, I felt cold all over the body. And the cold air on the mountain made that worse. My stomach began to ache. I lay in the tent, shivering, sweating and then falling unconscious. Roy was shocked with panic. He called my name screamingly, but I just made no response. He tried to put me on his back to carry me home but without success. At last, he went out and found some tree branches and blocked up the entrance to our tent with them. Then, he ran to the direction of our village as fast as he could.
Not knowing how much time went by, I heard some sounds approaching near. I thought it was Roy but I didn't hear him saying anything. In a shock, I sat up with a rush. At that moment, my eyes had adjusted to the darkness. Through a hole of our tent, I saw two animals like dogs removing the tree branches with their mouths and claws. They were wolves!
