"Want fries with that?"You might be asked this question when ordering food in a restaurant. A nutritionist can help you with the answer.

Ellie Krieger is a nationally known nutritionist. Her job is to teach people how to make healthy food choices. She believes healthy eating can manage disease and promote overall good health. With her cookbooks, television programs, and podcast, Krieger also teaches people how to follow recipes and prepare delicious food.

A healthy approach includes having fun in the kitchen. "I get to ‘play' with my food when I'm testing and making a recipe," Krieger says. "It's part of my job, and it never gets old." She tries to impart this sense of fun to her TV and podcast audiences. "It's a great feeling to know my work is helping people live healthier lives," she says. "I feel like I am making a difference in the world."

A nutritionist's work goes beyond affecting individuals. It can shape public health, by changing the way society views food, health, and nutrition. Nutritionists like Krieger teach people how to read menus and food labels, and how food is grown and finds its way to the plate. Nutritionists do this work in schools, hospitals, and long-term care facilities.

For Krieger, food is a way to learn about other people and understand different cultures. This is an idea she imparts to kids and parents. "The school cafeteria is a classroom,"she says, "and so is the family dinner table."

It was because of the commitment to family nutrition that Krieger made an effort to address the problem of childhood obesity. She's been part of the School Nutrition Association, and has proved before the House Committee on Agriculture about nutrition and the childhood-obesity epidemic. She even helped plan the lunch menu at her daughter's public school, in New York City.

Krieger's career shows how a nutritionist's work can go beyond the hospital or the doctor's office. "We work in all different fields," she says. "We work in the media, in schools, at markets, with sports teams, in restaurants, in private practices, in government organizations, at food companies, and more!"

On Friday March 3, 18-year-old Jordan Stolz became the youngest person ever to win a world speed skating gold medal.

Stolz is from Kewaskum, Wisconsin. He began skating on a small pond in his family's backyard. When he was five years old, he saw speed skaters at the 2010 Winter Olympics on TV. He suddenly became very interested in learning to skate fast.

By the time he was in fifth grade, Stolz had won national championships. In high school, he went to school online so that he could train for up to six hours a day.

Last November, Stolz earned two gold medals during the 2022-23 ISU Speed Skating World Cup, making him the youngest male to win a World Cup race. Then, in February, Stolz won four gold medals at the 2023 World Junior Speed Skating Championships. The medals were for 500-meter, 1,000-meter, and 5,000-meter races, and the team sprint.

Stolz's coach, Bob Corby, says one of Stolz's greatest talents is the way he is able to take the corners in the curving (弯曲的) track at high speeds. "Everyone is extremely impressed with the way he goes around corners," says Mr Corby.

That ability helped him out at the speed skating championships in early March. In the 500-meter race, Stolz passed his opponent, Yuma Murakami, on the final curve. It only took him 34.10 seconds to cover a distance longer than five football fields.

The win made Stolz the youngest person ever to win a world speed skating gold medal. In the 1,000-meter race, he defeated Thomas Krol of the Netherlands, who won the Olympic gold medal for the race in 2022. In the 1,500-meter race, he defeated both Krol and Kjeld Nuis, who won the Olympic gold medal for the event in 2018 and 2022.

Stolz's speed and strength have amazed many people. One of his opponents, Canadian skater Laurent Dubreuil, says he has been trying to imitate the way Stolz goes around corners. Laurent took second place in the 500-meter race. He says Stolz's skating style is "just something that I don't think I've seen in a speed skater before".

During my school years, I had only close friend. We spent years together, and we were inseparable, in or out of school. But the Greg moved away, and I never thought it would take more than 40 years to bring us together again. 

As children, Greg and I dove into everything with passion. At that time, we were pure (纯真的) and kind, full of curiosity and expectation for life. We raced our bikes and illustrated (给书加插图) our own comic books. We even became attracted to the same girl from around the corner, a sixth -grader named Joanne who barely (几乎不) knew we existed. 

The last times a Greg was sometime in 1966. It was so short a meeting that I couldn't recall saying goodbye before he moved. Since then, we lost touch. 

But then, a few summers ago, I saw a familiar woman. "Excuse me. Would your name happen to be Joanne?"

"Uh, yes. . . " She didn't recognise me until I explained who I was. We hadn't exchanged more than a few dozen words in our entire lifetime. "Have you stayed in touch with Greg?" she asked. I was surprised she even knew of our friendship.

"No. I haven't," I admitted. "I wish I had."

Back at the office I checked my messages. I received one email, and then read it from start to finish. The email was from Greg. 

Greg had tracked me down through social media. He was now married, had two children and had become a musician and entrepreneur (企业家) . We exchanged several emails before connecting by phone. A month later, my wife and I drove to meet Greg and his family in person.
