In Budapest, a train line called Gyermekavasut runs between station(bury) deep in the woodland. Like any other railway, it has ticket offices. signals. guards and a timetable. Unlike any other. this one(run) by children aged between 10 and 14. The children of the Gyermekavasut railway(efficient) sell and check tickets and salute trains as they leave (station).

Ten years ago, Liz Plachta gave birth to a little girl with Down syndrome(唐氏综合征)named Ruby. The love Plachta felt for her daughter1  her to create a scholarship of $2 ,000 to help another child with Down syndrome but wanting to go to college.

"I really just wanted the world to2 what I saw in her, which was that she was extraordinary," Plachta shared with CBS News.

The initial3 of sending one child to college didn't quite go as planned. The family actually4 to raise funds for kids with Down syndrome in that year. From there,Ruby' s Rainbow was5 . It is a non profit aimed at6 higher education for those with Down syndrome and giving them the7 not only to learn, but also to become more independent and able to contribute to society.

However, although the scholarship program is a wonderful educational opportunity,what matters most is the10 message this sends to parents of children with Down syndrome, or parents expecting a child with that extra chromosome.

Plachta wants parents to feel11 . She wants parents not to be12 of a Down syndrome diagnosis. Since the beginning of my scientific training, I was encouraged to seek multiple mentors(导师) to help me find my way. With many efforts，I became comfortable， confident, and strategic in building my network of mentors. 

Cast a wide net.

Sending cold contacts was scary, so I focused on the thrill of emailing people who had some of the coolest jobs I'd ever heard of. If I was inspired by someone's work, I emailed. If I loved the way they ran their lab, I emailed. If I was interested in learning more about their company, I emailed.  At last, I got dozens of informational interviews that helped me in my ideal job.

As a grad student， I met someone at a conference who I hoped would be a future mentor- and followed up with a five-paragraph email. Their reply was simple, "I cannot respond to this. Too long. "Over the years, I learned to clearly include the what，the ask, and the when- for example. a 30-minute meeting to talk about X，offering three or four specific times. A clear, concise email encourages a quick，positive response.

Consider the context(情景).

In graduate school, I asked a senior faculty member to serve as my departmental adviser. A few months later, he left the institution. I realized the move must have already been in the works when I asked, and his response didn't reflect negatively on me; he was just predicting his own changing circumstances. When evaluating responses or advice, remember that everyone has their own affairs and concerns.

Come prepared.，

 I came to every conversation with at least 10 questions, arranged in categories including shared experiences， career goals, and advice. Coming prepared helped me respect other people s time and use these meetings wisely.

Gene therapy (治疗)一which involves fixing or replacing a disease-causing gene or changing its activit—has recorded some remarkable successes and some fatal missteps.Having experienced those extreme ups and downs in the past decade, gene therapy has now begun advancing at a rapid pace. This report explores how the field has moved beyond its early failures and fully grown to embrace its bright future.

Over the past few years, not only has the discipline changed but the definition of gene therapy has evolved. Today the field includes not just direct. permanent changes to a cell's DNA but also temporary changes to how genes are translated into proteins. Researchers have now reported a number of success stories: they have alleviated some cases of blindness. Cured cancers, addressed the underlying causes of some blood diseases, and begun to treat some born disorders.

The history of gene therapy has had a lot to overcome. especially at the lab bench. Early tragedies led researchers to different paths- while some of them turned away from the field ，others fought to pursue ways to prevent the side effects. What has resulted is a range of new viral vectors(载体)，engineered to mix their genetic material more safely and efficiently into the genome, as well as the rapid development of tools. such as the Nobel Prize- winning technique known as CRISPR.

Gene therapy has more than compensated for its shaky scientific start and the field also managed to restore its reputation. Consequently. both patients and the public now connect this approach with the hope for seemingly miraculous cures. And with that hope comes other problems: problems of over-expectation, of affordability and of accessibility. Current gene therapy approaches are pricey and not easily available， and both issues limit their possible reach. Solving these problems may be the field's next big challenge.

Colombia，Costa Rica，Ecuador and Panama have agreed to create a huge joint marine reserve around the coasts of their countries. The reserve will cover 200，000 square miles of the Pacific Ocean in an area that is an important route for long -distance wildlife migrations.These are annual journeys made by many sea creatures. including sharks, stingrays. Turtles and whales. to move between feeding grounds or to breed. The leaders of the four countries announced their plan to create the Eastern Tropical Paeific Marine Corridor(通道) at the COP26 environmental summit in Glasgow, Scotland.

The presidents of Colombia and Ecuador also announced that they would expand existing areas of protected water around their countries. This includes the seas around the Galapagos Islands, a group of islands that is home to a huge number of species found nowhere else on Earth. "Just as all the world leaders here have called for action not words, I believe this is a concrete action," said Ecuador s president, Guillermo Lasso.

Alex Hearn, a marine biologist working in the Galapagos, told The Guardian newspaper that the numbers of migratory creatures- including sharks and stingrays- have fallen in recent years. The eastern Pacific attracts fishing ships from all over the world and over fishing has affected several species. Hammerhead sharks are in particular danger because their fins are a highly prized food in China. Just last year, one Ecuadorian company illegally exported 26 tons of shark fins to Hong Kong. Hearn says that the announcement is "a moment to enjoy but there's a lot of work that needs to be done.

Selom Sunu is a successful illustrator(插画家)，but his path of becoming an illustrator was a long one.

When he was young. Sunu went to school for a while in Ghana. a country in the west Africa. He remembered that there were not many books with Ghanaian children in them, so he wanted to create his own book and illustrate it. "It is important to draw everyone, so everyone feels included." Sunu says. Then，he moved to America with his family. To start a new and stable life，everyone in the family had to work hard, leaving him little time to paint.After college, Sunu gave up drawing and didn't draw for eight years.

Then，one day, he came up with an idea for a book and the wish of his youth reoccurred to him. To sharpen his drawing skill, Sunu applied for a course at university but did not get it. The staff told him to draw every day for a year and reapply. So he drew every day,improved, and got accepted onto the course.Through this experience, he realized that one could learn how to draw by coping other drawings that one liked.

"Sometimes it might look like nothing s happening but, if you keep going. you could get opportunities unexpectedly," Selom Sunu tells The Week Junior. "So don't give up."

Recently, Sunu has worked with Disney and illustrated a book called Christmas Carrolls ， which he describes as very funny and warm.Sunu is judging this year 's Christmas cover competition. His advice is， "Stay on the brief, but put your own understanding on it. I'm keen to see that people enjoyed drawing the covers. because enjoyment shines through."
