The Benefits of Making Fun of Yourself

Being able to laugh at yourself isn't always easy. However, making light of your weaknesses and life challenges can have a number of benefits. While it might sound surprising, being able to make fun of yourself can be good for your self-esteem(自尊).

Making fun of yourself is a form of self-critical humor, which can involve being too modest, or even laughing at yourself humorously.  However, research suggests they tend to be more self-confident. When this type of humor is used to maintain a positive attitude in difficult situations, it can help enhance well-being and self-esteem. 

 Making fun of yourself may help make you more likable and build stronger relationships with others. Interestingly, research suggests that both men and women think that being able to make fun of yourself is an attractive trait, despite differences in their ways of using humor. 

Laughter has been shown to have a number of stress-fighting benefits. When you view situations as threats, stress levels increase. Shifting to a mindset that allows you to see these situations as challenges can transform this into what is known as "good stress" that helps you feel more empowered.

Making fun of yourself can have some benefits, but it's important not to take things too far. If making fun of yourself starts negatively impacting your mental health or well-being, it's time to take a step back. If you embrace your weakness and imperfections to a reasonable degree, you will feel happier and improve your relationships and overall well-being.

Sleeping in class prevents you from paying attention to the teacher as well as stops you from learning about the material that is being taught. It is important to determine why you are falling asleep in class and try to change the situation so that you are able to stay awake and pass all of your classes. There are a number of different tricks you can use to try to stay awake, as well as habits you can adopt to help your alertness. 

Get a full night's sleep on school nights. The National Sleep Foundation has reported that teenagers may need more sleep than adults. This is a key part to staying awake in class. If you are not tired, you are unlikely to fall asleep. 

Eat a healthy breakfast full of nutritious foods. If you get hungry or tired in the middle of the day, try eating a healthy snack like a piece of fruit or some biscuits. If necessary, drink something with sugar or caffeine in it directly before the class. 

If you are actively engaged in the information the teacher is presenting, you are less likely to doze off. Taking notes, asking questions and otherwise getting involved in classroom activities anddiscussions will make you far less likely to doze off. 

Contact your doctor in order to rule out medical conditions that can cause you to fall asleep. Prescription drugs may also cause sleepiness or drowsiness as a side effect, so discuss any medicines you are taking with your doctor.

Social networks are a big part of nearly every teenager's life in this day and age. Many teens have QQ, WeChat, or Weibo but little do a lot of teens know that they can be held responsible for everything they post for the rest of their lives. Everything you post online is part of a digital footprint that can always be traced (追踪) back to you. That includes every post, even like, comment, favorite and forward that you have ever committed. All pictures you've posted or will post have been stored in a digital database, and it is the companies' right to keep all of these documents that you believe to have been deleted or hidden.

With every post comes a consequence; whether it is good or bad, what you post could be seen by anyone. That is why you have to be very careful of what you decide to post or comment. 

If you think you are safe from Servite finding out about one funny comment you made six months ago on a meaningless picture, you are probably wrong. Recently, a senior, Aaron, at Servite learned this lesson the hard way this year. He wrote a series of ugly comments towards Connelly girls on a web page, ignoring potential consequences. 

This student, however, did have to face consequences from Servite as he was removed from all of his leadership roles in the school. Surprisingly enough, he fully agreed with his punishment handed down by the administration and fully understood why he was given such severe discipline (惩处). "When you agree to come to Servite, you are agreeing to defend what Servite stands for," the young man said. "That continues past the hours of 8 am and 2 pm. It's at all times. "

So, next time you're about to post something you think could be received as offensive or inappropriate, think twice, think again, and don't press send.

When you encounter animals, do you wonder what they're thinking? Seeing a newborn lamb or a cute puppy might arouse happy emotions (情感) in us, but what are they thinking? Does the look on their face and how they behave indicate how they're feeling - or are they feeling nothing at all?

Humans have a complex range of feelings, but it's hard to tell what's going on inside the heads of animals. Some of us own dogs, because they are good companions, are loyal and seem to connect with us. We might even think they love us. Professor Kim Bard, an expert in comparative developmental psychology from the University of Portsmouth, told the BBC: "We have a few studies now that actually show scientifically that some dogs will respond when their owner - but not a stranger - pretends to cry. " The empathetic ability of cats, however, is harder to work out.

Other non-domesticated (非驯养的) animals might have feelings too. Giraffes and whales, for example, are known to experience sadness when someone in their group dies. It's believed that even tiny creatures like insects might have emotions as well. Research is beginning to show they experience a wide range of feelings. Kim says "they can be optimistic, pessimistic, or frightened, and respond to pain just like any mammal would. "

Dr Barbara J King, Emerita Professor of Anthropology at the College of William and Mary, told the BBC: "If we understand the profound depths of emotions animals can feel, this should make us question the existence of zoos and slaughterhouses (屠宰场) around the world, and rethink those systems. It does seem all creatures feel emotion, but what is not clear is whether they feel the same way as us. "

Near-death accidents and summit failures have not slowed down mountaineer Saray N' kusi Khumalo. The Zambia-born mother of two holds a corporate job, hosts a podcast, has climbed some of the tallest mountains around the world, and still has the time to run a non- profit organization that focuses on education in Africa.

"My grandfather always used to say, ‘if you don't live a life of service, that's a life wasted, " she said. In 2013, she founded Summits With A Purpose in South Africa. With every climb, she raises funds to help build schools and libraries. Khumalo is not going to just climb and take a selfie. She is going to climb and then make a difference.

Not long after her first-ever summit, she turned her eyes toward the world's tallest peak: Mt. Qomolangma, located in the Himalayas. The first three climbs were tough and heart-breaking for Khumalo: She experienced everything from natural disasters to losing consciousness in the "death zone", Qomolangma's top stretch over 8, 000 meters above sea level, where oxygen is dangerously low.

On May 16, 2019 —her fourth bid —she succeeded, becoming the first Black African woman to reach the summit. In total, only eight of the 4,000 people who've ever summited Qomolangma are Black.

Khumalo is humbled by what she's achieved so far, but she notes, "I don't think that I've broken those stereotypes yet; there's still a lot more work to be done," adding that representation should extend beyond the mountain tops, too.

"It's not just about Qomolangma; it is a gift that we need to leave for the next generation wherever we are," she says, calling on her peers to step outside their comfort zone to show that Black people belong in all spaces.

Directed by Kirsty Patrick Ward, Groan Ups is a completely new play which looks at how people grow up and develop. Are we the same at 30 as we were 13?

Nancy was the special service representative at New York's LaGuardia airport, One day when she was in the departure lounged候机室),she spotted a boy in tears and obvious emotional pain, whose mother at his side also appeared upset. Being a clerk of the airport as well as a parent, she was curious if she could be of assistance. 

As it turned out, their flight to O'Hare in Chicago was full, and they couldn't sit together, The boy was terrified to be separated from his mother. Those were the days when the first-class cabins were not always full, so Nancy seated mother and son in first class. 

In their later chat, Nancy also found out that the boy, who was called Miles, and his mom were returning to their home in Kansas City. Miles was suffering serious health problems with internal(内部的)organs. They had spent the last two weeks at Long Island Jewish Hospital. He would be back to the hospital through LaGuardia many more times. 

During the numerous trips, the friendship and bond between Miles's family and Nancy's service staff grew closer. Miles began to enjoy his flights through LaGuardia because he was allowed to spend time in the VIP lounge, where an entire wall was filled with pictures of many celebrities(名人) who frequented the office. The picture of a country singer Garth Brooks, Miles's hero, the person he most admired, also hung there. Soon Miles's picture was also added to the wall of fame. 

One day, Mr. Brooks was traveling for a performance from LaGuardia and relaxing in the lounge waiting for his flight to depart. He was interested in the picture of the youngster with the big smile on the wall. He was told about Miles, knowing how much Miles loved and admired him, Mr Brooks left his guitar and penned a few words of encouragement inside the guitar case. 

He asked Nancy to deliver the guitar and his cowboy hat to Miles.

The Chinese New Year red envelope is one of  most popular Chinese traditions for children on the Chinese New Year. They are given red envelopes with money inside! Kids  (usual) learn the words for the red envelope quickly: "hong bao"  (write) in Chinese. 

The red color for the Chinese stands for good fortune,  is the lucky color. Traditionally the envelopes  (decorate) with gold letters and messages of happiness or Chinese lucky  (symbol) like the Chinese dragon, the phoenix, etc. Nowadays, in keeping up with the times, you can find anything from Mickey Mouse, Pokémon  Hello Kitty on the red envelopes. 

Technically, all unmarried kids get red envelopes during the Chinese' New Year from Grandmas, Grandpas, uncles, runts, Mom and Dad of course. It is also common for close friends and neighbors  (give) red envelopes to the children during the festival. 

Who gives money and how much money is given really depend on the  (person) relationship and the age of the kids. 

So a common Chinese New Year greeting that waits for any adult  (visit) a family with kids will be "Best wishes for the New Year. May I have my red envelope please?"

This morning I was walking with my husband when I noticed an elderly man was unstable(不稳固的)on his feet. So he was trying to 1  himself by holding a tree, but then slowly 2  to the sidewalk. My husband and I ran to his side. 3  , he didn't hit his head on the sidewalk. A few more of us gathered around, discussing the 4  . I gave my cellphone to my husband to call 911,

It seemed to have happened all at once, but there were at least 4 people by the man's side. Someone took his pulse; another 5  his own coat under his head to make him more 6  Several minutes later, his wife 7  - she had been walking their dog in the pet area. But she was too 8  to do anything. Waiting for the rescue to get there, I held his hand and looked him in the eyes. I patted his face 9  and touched his forehead: I wanted him to know that help was on its 10  

Once the ambulance(救护车) got there, I talked to his. wife. His medical 11  was very rough. He had a triple bypass heart operation(三重心脏搭桥手术) and 12  from cancer. Their son had served in the army for many years. This was their last trip here to visit him, who always had no holidays to see them. 

I gave her a paper dove and a huge hug and then before we all 13 , I thanked everyone for their help and 14  more doves. One young man, who had been so helpful, felt 15  and asked if I was his family. "No. " I said, shrugging. "but then again, aren't we all families?" He nodded and smiled in agreement.
