Both Roberto and Keith have a 45-minute commute(通勤) time from their homes to their workplace. When Roberto drives, he has realistic expectations of how others drive and how long the trip should take. Overall, he is able to adapt to any unexpected challenges he may face on the road. He rarely becomes angry. By contrast, Keith drives with a tendency for becoming angry easily, partly due to unrealistic expectations of other drivers, his quickness to personalize and feel threatened by the actions of others, and his inability to calm his anger.
The difference between how Roberto and Keith experience their drive to work, especially with regard to getting angry, is influenced very much by their emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence is crucial for helping individuals choose constructive over destructive anger. A key aspect of healthy anger is being able to pause and reflect on, rather than react to, our thoughts, feelings, and senses associated with getting angry.
Self-regulation and empathy(同理心) are two important components of emotional intelligence, which can be a buffer(缓冲) against destructive anger. Self-regulation helps us to control our moods. Empathy helps us to recognize the humanity in others and ourselves.
Studies suggest that training in emotional intelligence can powerfully impact how anger is managed. This was supported by a three-year study of 476 young adults who showed reduced tendency of becoming angry after training. Children and adults can learn skills to boost their emotional intelligence and, by doing so, develop adaptability for dealing with various negative affect, including anger. Many workbooks offer skills in emotional intelligence to promote empathy and self-awareness regarding emotions and how they impact our beliefs and behavior.
Clearly, through training, Keith would experience greater emotional flexibility that could support a more peaceful commute to work. I firmly believe that learning skills in emotional intelligence should be the focus in helping individuals more constructively manage this highly challenging and complex emotion.

The captain hadn't even turned off the "fasten your seat belt" light and Matthew Bahani was already having a rough time.
Matthew, a 9-year-old with autism(自闭症), was growing increasingly anxious even as his parents hugged and kissed him.
"He gets nervous and he can't control himself. He gets loud. He makes noise. It isn't easy," said his father, Sam Bahani, 48. "You can't imagine what he goes through. He can't express himself."
The Bahanis were among the ten families who participated in a program at Newark Liberty International Airport intended to help familiarize autistic children with air travel — a confusing, complex process that, with loud noises, uniformed screening agents and lines of passengers they don't know, can be frightening to them.
The "Autism Explores" program — which takes participants through all aspects of the flying experience without leaving the ground — also helps parents, who often find themselves in the position of dealing with a difficult child, as well as with scare from other adults who may have no idea of the child's particular difficulty.
"When you're in a public situation and that happens, people are not always kind," said Matthew's mother, Jennifer Bahani, 42, who avoids even the shopping mall with Matthew.
Each aspect of the program, from check-in to baggage claim, related to the flying experience, except for the actual flying. While the pilot and other flight crew made the usual announcements about flying conditions or the weather on the ground, the plane never actually pulled back from the gate.
"It's a beautiful day for flying. Sit back and enjoy the flight," announced the pilot, Geoff Bender, whose 13-year-old daughter, Teresa, is also autistic.
"Normalizing activities like flying for children with autism is important in making sure they will lead as full and independent a life as possible," he said.
(1)、How did Matthew feel on the plane?A、Terrible. B、Bored. C、Puzzled. D、Uninterested.(2)、What was the main purpose of the program for children with autism?A、To help them get used to air travel. B、To make them interested in air travel. C、To encourage them to travel independently. D、To let them experience air travel with their parents.(3)、What does the underlined "that" in paragraph 6 refer to?A、People scaring the child. B、People being unkind to the child. C、People dealing with a difficult child. D、People not knowing the child is autistic.(4)、What do we know about the plane?A、It had just taken off. B、It was on the ground. C、It was waiting for passengers. D、It would soon land at the airport. -

When I was in Grade 8. I had a heated argument with my classmate. Tony. I have forgotten what the argument was about, but I have never forgotten the lesson I learned that day.
I believed that I was right and he was wrong, and Tony believed that I was wrong and he was right. Our teacher, a kind and smart lady, decided to teach us a lesson. She brought us to the front of the class and placed him on one side of her desk and me on the other. In the middle of her desk was a large and round object. I could clearly see that it was black. The teacher asked us what colour the object was. To my surprise, Tony answered "white I couldn't believe he said the object was white!"Clearly, it was black!"Another argument started between Tony and me, this time about the colour of the object.
The teacher told me to go and stand where Tom was standing and told him to go and stand where I was standing.
My teacher taught me a very important lesson that day.

Diets have changed in China — and so too has its top crop. Since 2011, the country (grow)more corn than rice. Corn production has jumped nearly 125 percent over past 25 years, while rice has increased only 7 percent.
A taste for meat is (actual) behind the change: An important part of its corn is used to feed chickens, pigs, and cattle. Another reason for corn's rise: The government encourages farmers to grow corn instead of rice(improve) water quality. Corn uses less water rice and creates less fertilizer(化肥) runoff. This switch has decreased (pollute) in the country's major lakes and reservoirs and made drinking water safer for people.
According to the World Bank, China accounts for about 30 percent of total (globe) fertilizer consumption. The Chinese Ministry of Agriculture finds that between 2005 — when the government (start) a soil-testing program gives specific fertilizer recommendations to farmers — and 2011, fertilizer use dropped by 7.7 million tons. That prevented the emission(排放) of 51.8 million tons of carbon dioxide. China's approach to protecting its environment while (feed) its citizens "offers useful lessons for agriculture and food policymakers worldwide." says the bank's Juergen Voegele.

If you are already making the time to exercise, it is good indeed! With such busy lives, it can be hard to try and find the time to work out. Working out in the morning provides additional benefits beyond being physically fit.
Your productivity is improved. Exercising makes you more awake and ready to handle whatever is ahead of you for the day.
Your metabolism(新陈代谢) gets a head start. If you work out in the mornings, then you will be getting the calorie(卡路里) burning benefits for the whole day, not in your sleep.
Studies found that people who woke up early for exercise slept better than those who exercised in the evening. Exercise energizes you, so it is more difficult to relax and have a peaceful sleep when you are very excited.
If you work out bright and early in the morning, you will be more likely to stick to healthy food choices throughout the day. Who would want to ruin their good workout by eating junk food? You will want to continue to focus on positive choices.
There are a lot of benefits to working out, especially in the mornings. Set your alarm clock an hour early and push yourself to work out! You will feel energized all day long.
A. You will stick to your diet.
B. Your quality of sleep improves.
C. You prefer healthy food to fast food.
D. There is no reason you should exercise in the morning.
E. You can keep your head clear for 4-10 hours after exercise.
F. After you exercise, you continue to burn calories throughout the day.
G. If you are planning to do exercise regularly, or you're doing it now, then listen up!

Terrafugia Inc. said Monday that its new flying car has completed its first flight, bringing the company closer to its goal of selling the flying car within the next year. The vehicle — named the Transition — has two seats, four wheels and wings that fold up so it can be driven like a car. The Transition, which flew at 1,400 feet for eight minutes last month, can reach around 70 miles per hour on the road and 115 in the air. It flies using a 23-gallon tank of gas and burns 5 gallons per hour in the air. On the ground, it gets 35 miles per gallon.
Around 100 people have already put down a $10,000 deposit to get a Transition when they go on sale, and those numbers will likely rise after Terrafugia introduces the Transition to the public later this week at the New York Auto Show. But don't expect it to show up in too many driveways. It's expected to cost $279,000. And it won't help if you're stuck in traffic. The car needs a runway.
Inventors have been trying to make flying cars since the 1930s, according to Robert Mann, an airline industry expert. But Mann thinks Terrafugia has come closer than anyone to making the flying car a reality. The government has already permitted the company to use special materials to make it easier for the vehicle to fly. The Transition is now going through crash tests to make sure it meets federal safety standards.
Mann said Terrafugia was helped by the Federal Aviation Administration's decision five years ago to create a separate set of standards for light sport aircraft, which are lower than those for pilots of larger planes. Terrafugia says an owner would need to pass a test and complete 20 hours of flying time to be able to fly the Transition, a requirement pilots would find relatively easy to meet.
(1)、What is the first paragraph mainly about?A、The basic data of the Transition. B、The advantages of flying cars. C、The potential market for flying cars. D、The designers of the Transition.(2)、Why is the Transition unlikely to show up in too many driveways?A、It causes traffic jams. B、It is difficult to operate. C、It is very expensive. D、It burns too much fuel.(3)、What is the government's attitude to the development of the flying car?A、Cautious. B、Favorable. C、Ambiguous. D、Disapproving.(4)、What is the best title for the text?A、Flying Car at Auto Show B、The Transition's First Flight C、Pilots' Dream Coming True D、Flying Car Closer to Reality -

Some parents will buy any high-tech toy if they think it will help their child, but researchers said puzzles help children with math-related skills.
Psychologist Susan Levine, an expert on mathematics development in young children at the University of Chicago, found children who play with puzzles between ages 2 and 4 later develop better spatial skills. Puzzle play was found to be a significant predictor of cognition(认知) after controlling for differences in parents' income, education and the amount of parent talk, Levine said.
The researchers analyzed video recordings of 53 child-parent pairs during everyday activities at home and found children who play with puzzles between 26 and 46 months of age have better spatial skills when assessed at 54 months of age.
"The children who played with puzzles performed better than those who did not, on tasks that assessed their ability to rotate(旋转)and translate shapes," Levine said in a statement.
The parents were asked to interact with their children as they normally would, and about half of the children in the study played with puzzles at one time. Higher-income parents tended to have children play with puzzles more frequently, and both boys and girls who played with puzzles had better spatial skills. However, boys tended to play with more complex puzzles than girls, and the parents of boys provided more spatial language and were more active during puzzle play than parents of girls.
The findings were published in the journal Developmental Science.
(1)、In which aspect do children benefit from puzzle play?A、Building confidence. B、Developing spatial skills. C、Learning self-control. D、Gaining high-tech knowledge.(2)、What did Levine take into consideration when designing her experiment?A、Parents' age. B、Children's imagination. C、Parents' education. D、Child-parent relationship.(3)、How do boys differ from girls in puzzle play?A、They play with puzzles more often. B、They tend to talk less during the game. C、They prefer to use more spatial language. D、They are likely to play with tougher puzzles.(4)、What is the text mainly about?A、A mathematical method. B、A scientific study. C、A woman psychologist D、A teaching program. -

I have worked as a keeper at the National Zoo for 11 years. Spot and Stripe are the first tiger cubs(幼兽)that have ever been born here. Globally, a third of Sumatran cubs in zoos don't make it to adulthood, so I decided to give them round-the-clock care at home.
I've got two children — the younger one, Kynan, was extremely happy about the tigers arriving — but all of us really looked forward to being part of their lives and watching them grow. I wasn't worried about bringing them into my home with my wife and kids. These were cubs. They weighed about 2.5 kg and were so small that there was absolutely no risk.
As they grew more mobile, we let them move freely around the house during the day, but when we were asleep we had to contain them in a large room, otherwise they'd get up to mischief. We'd come down in the morning to find they'd turned the room upside down, and left it looking like a zoo.
Things quickly got very intense due to the huge amount of energy required to look after them. There were some tough times and I just felt extremely tired. I was grateful that my family was there to help. We had to have a bit of a production line going, making up "tiger milk", washing baby bottles, and cleaning the floors.
When Spot and Stripe were four months old, they were learning how to open doors and jump fences, and we knew it really was time for them to go. It was hard for us to finally part with them. For the first few days, Kynan was always a bit disappointed that the cubs weren't there.
I'm not sad about it. I'm hands-on with them every day at the zoo, and I do look back very fondly on the time that we had them.
(1)、Why did the author bring the tiger cubs home?A、To ensure their survival. B、To observe their differences. C、To teach them life skills. D、To let them play with his kids.(2)、What do the underlined words "get up to mischief' mean in paragraph 3?A、Behave badly. B、Lose their way. C、Sleep soundly. D、Miss their mom.(3)、What did the author think of raising the tiger cubs at home?A、Boring. B、Tiring. C、Costly. D、Risky.(4)、Why did the author decide to send Spot and Stripe back to the zoo?A、They frightened the children. B、They became difficult to contain. C、They annoyed the neighbours. D、They started fighting each other.
