Unfortunately, Mr. Williams got sick around a year ago and had to miss about a year of work. He lost his job and it was hard for him to afford his apartment and find other employment. During the car ride back home, James'mum told him that their neighbour was probably homeless after losing his job.

Twice cooked pork or double cooked pork is one of the most famous Sichuan pork  (dish). Its Chinese name is huiguorou,  means "returned to the pot meat". Pork is boiled in the pot first. Then it  (cook) again with other ingredients,  (include) broad bean paste (doubanjiang), fermented (发酵的) black soybeans (douchi), garlic, ginger, and so on.

Try your local farmer's market. I always check out my local farmer's market for produce, especially for fruits and vegetables that are in season.  Not only that but you'll be helping to stimulate (激发) your local economy by buying from local farmers and you get to interact with them too.

 You may not want a full blown home vegetable garden in your backyard but certain spices and vegetables can be grown for relatively cheap and without much daily maintenance. The greatest benefit of growing your own produce is that after the upfront cost of buying the seeds, the rewards are endless as long as you water and take care of the plants.  By doing so, you can learn more about the benefits of a home garden and how you can save money.

Join a food co-op (食品合作社). Joining a food co-op can really help you to save money on meat. Buy in large quantities in a food co-op and if you have an extra freezer, freeze the meat and eat it for the next month or two. Check out what kind of co-ops are available in your area and join one.  

Rethink your meals. Finally, try coming up with meals that use fresh ingredients but can be prepared in large quantities. That way you can easily reheat and eat again. Also, try cutting out frozen ready-made meals and TV dinners like pizzas and other frozen organic foods.  And you want to go organic for the health benefits too, right?

The next time San Franciscans take a cab, they may step into a car with no one behind the steering wheel (方向盘). Driverless taxis are now allowed to drive on the city's streets — with some conditions.

Last week, regulators of the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) voted to issue a novel permit to Cruise, the self-driving vehicle branch company of General Motors (GM). The first-of-its-kind permit allows Cruise to charge for rides, without a human driver in the car. Cruise had already been offering free rides in its self-driving cars, but the move allows the company to launch fully autonomous commercial operations in the Bay Area.

Cruise can operate just 30 autonomous vehicles without a safety driver, and the company can only charge for rides between 10 p. m. and 6 a. m. in neighbourhoods that are outside of the busy down town area. Weather conditions are also a factor: No autonomous taxi rides when there's heavy rain, heavy fog, heavy smoke, or snow in the forecast. Shared rides aren't allowed.

Cruise's technology is made up of a series of sensors and cameras built into a Chevrolet Bolt, an entirely electric car made by GM. Cruise has also announced plans for a car of their own, the Cruise Origin. The Cruise Origin lacks pedals (脚踏板), mirrors, a steering wheel and consists mostly of a sitting space, where passengers can face each other.

Supporters of self-driving vehicles say the technology has the possibility to reduce traffic deaths and injuries, expand transportation options, save money and lower the environmental impact of cars. As Waymo's former CEO John Krafcik said, "We can be good drivers when we are focused. But because we are human, we are often not focused."

While the metaverse (虚拟空间) may seem virtual to many people, it has provided Italian artist Elisa Laraia with a real-life trip to China, where she demonstrated the charm of technology through several works of art from her native land.

The three-day 11th China Popularized Science Products Exposition, in the city of Wuhu, concluded on Monday. With an exhibition area of 36,000-square-metres, it offered audiences a fresh look at science and technology through its panoramic (全景) virtual exhibition hall and highly interactive exhibits.

Multiple leading sci-tech achievements and cutting-edge products were introduced and displayed. For Elisa, the exhibition provided a rare opportunity to gain an in-depth understanding of the metaverse concept and China's development in this field.

Back home in Italy, Elisa is a professor at the School of Sculpture at the Naples Academy of Fine Arts, and director of Laboratorio Permanent e di Arte Pubblica (LAP) — a permanent public art workshop. Over a period of years, she has become increasingly attracted by her Chinese students, taking more interest in Chinese art and culture. One of her Chinese students has been serving as LAP's Chinese liaison (联络人) and invited her to attend the exhibition in Wuhu, bringing along some art works from Italy.

Elisa grasped the opportunity to see China for the first time, and brought a series of works by seven artists from the Naples Academy of Fine Arts to be shown at the event. The seven artworks integrate cutting-edge concepts, such as the metaverse and artificial intelligence, with realistic topics such as environmental pollution and social resources. During her trip to Wuhu, Elisa also delivered a speech on the theme of the metaverse and art education. "I found that many works focus very much on improving the experience of the exhibitors, allowing them to integrate into the works of art," said Elisa. "The various technological exhibits in the exhibition hall also allow people to en vision the future."

She added that exploring the impact of technology and art on society is a topic she continues to pay attention to, and this experience has provided more inspiration for her future teaching activities.

Jake was a nine-year-old boy of an orphan's home (孤儿院), one of ten children supported by what contributions the home could secure on a continuous struggle. There was very little to eat, but at Christmas there always seemed to be a little more than usual, and the home seemed a little warmer. It was a time for more than usual enjoyment, but more than this, there was an orange.

This Christmas Day, Jake had disobeyed the regulations of the orphan's home in some manner and his punishment was loss of the orange privilege. After a year of waiting for this rare occasion, and this most desired of all rewards, it was to be denied. Jake spent the Christmas Day empty and alone. It even seemed that the other children didn't want to associate with a person who didn't have an orange. Night time arrived and this was the worst time of all for Jake; he could not sleep. Silently, he cried, mostly because he didn't have an orange like the other kids.

A soft hand placed on Jake's shoulder shocked him momentarily and an object was quickly pressed into his hands. The donor disappeared into the dark of the room, leaving Jake with what he did not immediately identify as an orange. Not a regular run-of-the-orange, but one from parts of nine other oranges. Nine other highly prized oranges that would, of necessity, be eaten this day instead of several days hence.

Bessie Coleman

The skies had never seen a pilot like Bessie Coleman before. She was the first African American woman to obtain an international pilot's license, flying to new heights that Black people in the United States had never reached before. But as a Black woman in the 1920s, she faced many barriers because of her race and sex. She would say that "the air is the only place free from prejudice(偏见)."

Nothing was going to stop Benjamin O. Davis, Jr. from becoming a pilot. Not his white classmates at West Point, a military academy, refusing to be his roommate. Or being banned from an all-white officers' club, even though he was an officer himself. Or being rejected from the Army Air Corps, an early version of the Air Force, because he was African American.

Ida B. Wells

Ida B. Wells was born into slavery in Mississippi on July 16, 1862. After moving to Tennessee when she was about 20, Wells began writing for Black newspapers, speaking out against segregated schools—which forced Black children to go to separate schools—and other forms of discrimination(歧视) in the southern states.

Katherine Johnson

The stars were always within reach for Katherine Johnson. Using her mathematics skills, she helped NASA send astronauts to the moon and return them safely home. One of her biggest achievements at NASA was helping calculate the path of the country's first human spaceflight in 1961, making sure astronaut Alan B. Shepard, Jr. had a safe trip. A year later she helped figure out John Glenn's orbit of the planet, another American first. In 1969, she calculated the path of Neil Armstrong's historic mission to the moon on Apollo 11.

Kilimandjaro was a popular place for soccer fans who went to watch Middlesbrough F. C. play over the weekend to eat after the game. Waka Waka Chicken was one of the restaurant's signature dishes. 

Everything seemed normal for the owner of the restaurant, Apollo, who always values the virtue of honesty, and his waiters. Customers were flocking in, and service was running smoothly that day. Apollo, to be honest, wasn't even there. He was having a good time with his family, completely unaware of what was going on in his restaurant. He had no idea that something unexpected was about to happen and that he'd be getting a rather awkward phone call from the waiter. 

At about 11：00 a. m, three guys walked in, clearly interested in sitting down and eating some food. There's a good chance they came from out of town and were fans of the away team. At the very least, the staff could detect a difference in their accents. It wasn't long before they were attended to by a waiter who took their orders. After that, everything appeared to be going well…The three friends were glad they had chosen Kilimandjaro. Waka Waka Chicken with cheese was enjoyed by them. From their expression, the staff could tell these three guys were very satisfied with the food. 

About one hour later, the three friends were prepared to pay for their meals. The total cost of the food was £35. They reached for their credit cards and handed them over as the waiter approached their table. However, they were shocked when the waiter informed them that they could only pay in cash. None of them carried cash with them. At this time, the waiter was asked to go to another table to take orders. Realizing the last train back home was to depart in an hour, the three friends had other ideas…

Zhang firmly believed that hanfu serves  a gateway into the past, allowing people to  (true) connect with their cultural heritage. Since 2020, Zhang, the owner of Helu Hanfu Studio,  (cooperate) with women's re-employment organizations, seeking full-time stay-at-home women with sewing skills,  corresponds (一致) with her need for the production of hanfu. 

I was looking at the items such as a teapot, a poetry book, and a coat. I bought them from charity shops, where others' trash became my1 . I have also donated many unwanted toys. 2 my toys will also become others' precious discoveries.

Suffering from a phobia (恐惧症) is far from delightful. For adults, the phobia can seriously limit a person's functioning.  If you or your child experiences a phobia, you may wish to try the following to reduce the distress surrounding it. 

Name the fear.

 Dr. Dan Siegel, clinical professor of psychiatry at UCLA, summarizes this experience as "name it to tame it. " Pixar's movie Monsters, Inc. illustrates this nicely as the monster in the closet becomes less scary when Boo names it Kitty. 

Ask yourself whether the fear is sensible. Since many fears are groundless in nature, this step helps to reduce "worst-case scenario (方案)" thinking. It is important to note that while the percentage of many feared items happening is extremely remote, they are not necessarily 0 percent. Therefore, this step is often paired with finding a way to make peace with the feared item still existing in the world. 

Safely face the fear.

This is demonstrated to be the most enduring way to put fears behind us. Any unhelpful reaction, especially avoidance, must be removed. It's vital to set the stage for success by safely and gradually facing the feared item, step by step. For instance, if someone is afraid of snakes, picturing a snake in one's mind comes first, then looking at a picture of the rattlesnake, and finally going to the zoo.  Not facing, or worse, avoiding fear tends to give it more power and make the phobia stronger over time. 

In summary, it is perfectly natural and human to experience fears.  If a phobia lasts, it is always an option to seek the help of a mental health professional. Whatever you do, it is important not to let the fear consume you or your child's life. 

The shiny leaves and branching roots of mangroves (红树林) in Australia are eye-catching, and now a study provides us with new findings about the trees. Long-term tidal cycles (潮汐周期), in large part, set in motion the expansion and contraction of mangrove forests by the moon drive, researchers report in Science Advances. This discovery is key to predicting when mangroves are most likely to grow fast. 

Mangroves are coastal trees, which are good at absorbing carbon and could help fight climate change, that provide habitat for fish and fight against erosion (侵蚀). But in some places, the forests face plenty of menaces, including coastal development, pollution and land clearing for agriculture. Neil Saintilan, an environmental scientist in Sydney, worked out how the size and thickness of mangrove forests across Australia changed over time. 

Saintilan noticed a curious pattern. Mangrove forests tended to expand and contract in a certain manner. "I saw this 33-year regular change, " Saintilan said. 

That regularity got the researchers thinking about the moon. Over the course of 33 years, the plane (平面) of the moon's orbit around Earth slowly tilts (倾斜). When the moon's orbit is the least tilted relative to the equator, semi-diurnal tides (半日潮)—which consist of two high and low tides each day—tend to have a larger range. Saintilan found that mangrove forests experiencing semi-diurnal tides tended to be larger and denser precisely when higher tides were expected based on the moon's orbit, which could deliver much more water and necessary nutrients to mangroves. 

It is important to recognize this effect on mangrove populations. Such knowledge could inform efforts to protect and restore the forests, thus promoting the growth of these trees. That might look like added limitations on human activity nearby that could harm the forests. But people should be more reactive. 

Are you addicted to social media? You may think you can quit it any time you want, but your body and brain may not agree. Staying deeply connected to your social networks can be costly. 

Researchers took a look at how non-stop social networking can actually change your brain. Social media sites are used by one third of the global population, and 5—10% are unable to control their online usage due to a psychological addiction. Researchers call this addiction a substance addiction, namely, a similar effect of drug or alcohol on addicts. 

There is a decline in the white matter (脑白质) that controls emotional processing and decision making, largely because social media provides an immediate reward. When you post something online and someone "likes" it, you get the immediate reward—people's praise, and then your brain begins to long for these rewards. It's just like how a drug works. 

Researchers also looked at how multitasking affects the brain. When you are dealing with a variety of tasks, devices, and websites, you have to constantly switch your thinking modes, which usually leads to the unbalanced distribution of attention. Also, multitasking could damage your ability to commit to memory. Consider what happens when your phone vibrates (振动). You feel the vibration and nine times out of ten, you pull your phones out to check, which will distract you from what you are doing. 

Of course there is nothing wrong with using social media to stay in touch with family, friends, and colleagues, but as with everything else in life, moderation (适度) is the key. Moderation can not only help us on task, but also help control the side effects from over stimulating our brains with social media, mobile devices, and screen time. 

It's getting close to midnight, and close to my destination—mile marker 133 on Alaska's Glenn Highway, where I'm on the road to realize a lifelong dream. I'm going to see the northern lights.

Millions of people over the age of 65 have been diagnosed with depression, and many more could be suffering. There are varied factors. Older people are much more likely to be alone, socially isolated or feel a general lack of purpose. Sometimes older people have a much more difficult time admitting mental health issues.

Early memory loss often causes depression, which can in turn make memory loss worse. A patient with early memory loss and depression really needs to be treated for the depression to slow the memory loss. A mood change also can be a sign of depression. If a previously calm person becomes increasingly bad-tempered, or a previously clean person no longer bothers to shower, that person should be judged again.

Older adults see depression as a weakness and tend to be annoyed by a diagnosis of depression. Therefore, don't tell people of an older generation that you think they may be depressed. Tell them you're worried about their health. Tell them they seem to be out of sorts, or seem tired, or unhappy. Say you just want to check with the doctor to see what's going on. Once you've used physical symptoms to get that person to agree to a check-up, mention your fears to the doctor and allow the doctor to approach the subject of depression with the patient.

If a parent or an older loved one has been diagnosed with depression, the first thing people should do is be aware that diagnosis is not easily treated. The initial treatment may not be effective. Therefore, patients and family members should be prepared to try different ways of dealing with the depression. It's also important to encourage patients to stick with treatment — even if they start to feel better.
