Kareem sighed as he counted his money again. He was still short of fifty dollars to buy the latest Speedster X bike. In order to save his pocket money to replace his old bike, he had been packing sandwiches to school for the last three months.

Vertical gardening isn't new, but an example from India shows how this inventive technique is  (true) changing lives. 

The Mehra family from Amritsar were locally hot news last June when they showed off the vertical garden  they had created at their home. The family used over 175,000 plastic bottles to create  garden, fixing the bottles to the outside walls of their home and filling them with  (variety) of plants. The plants are irrigated by  (use) a simple drip system(滴灌系统)and amazingly, this  (lower) the temperature of their home by nearly a cool five degrees Celsius so far. 

The idea caught on quickly. Many local schools now have green vertical gardens on their walls,  so does Punjab Agricultural University, and even Ludhiana railway station, the first station in India  (adopt) this initiative. The railway notes that the plants not only cool the station, but also help absorb the noise, and seem to have a calming and anti⁃littering effect  travelers. Moreover, every vertical garden created this way is recycling plastic which would otherwise be a pollutant, actively reducing local  (pollute).

Going green is a great way to reduce your environmental footprint and help the planet. Being green is all about reducing how many resources you use, reusing items when you can, and recycling items that can't be reused. .

As the aging population gets bigger and dementia(痴呆) is more common, more families are struggling with a complex question: How do you support a loved one with dementia, especially when you have a full⁃time job and several kids?

Reg Urbanowski may have an answer to this pressing issue: ROBOTS. He and his team managed to develop a new type of robot named the TP robot. Looking like stand⁃up vacuum cleaners attached to an iPad, they can be activated remotely via a smartphone and guided remotely by a controller app similar to the way a mouse is used on a desktop computer. All possess audio and visual communication capabilities, allowing the operator to be "in the room" to interact with Mom or Dad. 

He believes that caregivers and family members can use a TP robot to "look in" on people with mild dementia. He says, "TP robots provide an effective solution for minimizing caregivers' burden, especially for those who have jobs or other out⁃of⁃home activities. "

Urbanowski and his team have conducted a study that involves providing TP robots for 15 Manitoba families. These robots are programmed to provide reminders of necessary daily routine like turning off the gas, taking medicine and having dinner. They will also help ensure that patients are getting the exercise they need to maintain their health and well⁃being. 

Erin Crawford, Program Director of the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, says she has faith that TP robots will prove beneficial, particularly when it comes to reminding people with dementia to do certain things at certain times. "It means that family members that can't be there, for whatever reason, know that those things are still happening," she says. 

Johns Hopkins University researchers discovered precisely how spiders(蜘蛛)build webs in the dark. Their creation of a web⁃building playbook brings new understanding of how creatures with small brains are able to create elegant and complex structures. 

Web⁃building spiders, which build blindly using only the sense of touch, have attracted humans for centuries. "The first step to understand that is to study the behaviors and skills involved," said Andrew Gordus, a Johns Hopkins behavioral biologist. "But until now it has never been done, mainly because of the challenge of detecting and recording the actions. "

His team studied a spider native to the Western United States. To observe the spiders during their nighttime web⁃building work, the lab designed a stage with infrared(红外线的)cameras and infrared lights. They monitored and recorded six spiders every night and tracked millions of individual leg actions. "Even if you record it, there are a lot of legs to track,"said lead author Abel Corver. "It's just too much to go through every frame(帧)and mark the leg points by hand so we trained machine vision software to detect the actions of the spider, frame by frame, so that we could record everything the legs did to build an entire web. "

At the end of the year, Rose finished the college degree she had begun all those years before. One week after graduation, Rose died peacefully in her sleep.
