1、 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
When fireworks are lit in celebration of the New Year, wild birds often experience lasting harmful effects. An international team of researchers tracked Arctic migratory(迁移的) geese as they traveled in Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands over eight New Year periods to study the impacts of fireworks. Data from 347 geese showed that birds suddenly leave where they are sleeping on New Year's Eve and fly farther away from where people are.
Geese' lives were disturbed by the noise and flashes and these geese ended up resting two hours less and sometimes flying nonstop as far as 310 miles compared to the nights when there were no fireworks.
Geese spend their winter in Western Europe to escape extreme Arctic winters in their breeding grounds. Still, winters here are maybe not severely cold, but rather dark. As predators(食肉动物) are around in the dark, geese can only search for food in the light hours. During the night, they usually settle on small lakes to save energy and rest in relative safety. During New Year's Eve, geese are heavily scared, as the fireworks sounds and flashing lights are unexpected to them and they view them as a threat to their life.
But their changed behavior didn't end with the fireworks. The geese didn't return to their original sleeping locations and spent more time searching for food to store energy for days after the celebrations ended.
The researchers hope that the findings will be used to improve fireworks management. They want to provide decision makers with real numbers to support their discussions. As already stated above, they suggest that some measures should be taken for geese to escape fireworks' disturbance during New Year's Eve—nationwide regulations regarding nature reserve areas and some centralization of fireworks displays, as well as lighting public fireworks in urban areas away from where the geese live.
(1)、What may the author think of the situation of geese during the New Year?A、Worrying. B、Promising. C、Touching. D、Amusing.(2)、What can we know about geese from paragraph 3?A、They enjoy flying in the dark. B、They spend the winter in the Arctic. C、They are terrified of fireworks. 2、 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
Today, the world's diversity (多样性) of food crops is quickly decreasing. But scientists around the world are taking action. They are building seed banks. At seed banks, scientists store the seeds of many different crops.

There are now about 1,400 seed banks around the world. However, some banks are in warm countries. If the electricity fails, the seeds will get too hot and die. Other seed banks are in countries troubled by war. Sometimes people damage the seed banks. If this happens, valuable seeds can be lost forever!
The organisation Global Crop Diversity Trust decided they wanted to deal with this problem. So, they decided to build a global seed bank. This seed bank would contain a back-up, or extra copy, of all the world's seeds. Smaller seed banks would still collect and keep local seeds. But they would also send copies of their seeds to the global bank.
Scientists from the Global Crop Diversity Trust chose the cold, snowy mountains of Svalbard, Norway to build the global seed bank—the Svalbard Global Seed Vault (斯瓦尔巴全球种子库).Organisations, farmers, or local seed banks store their extra seeds there. And the people who place their seeds in the vault are the only people who can take them out. They pay to ship their seeds to Norway, but it does not cost them any money to store their seeds. The Global Crop Diversity Trust pays for this.
Cary Fowler is a scientist who heads the Global Crop Diversity Trust. He said, "If the Seed Vault simply supplies seed banks with copies of seeds that those banks lost by accident, the Seed Vault will be worth more than it cost. "
(1)、What is the purpose of building the seed banks?A、To research on seeds. B、To produce new seeds. C、To protect crop diversity. D、To increase the number of seeds.(2)、Compared with other seed banks, the global seed bank ____.A、was built by the government B、is more welcomed by farmers C、is mainly used by great scientists D、can provide a good environment for seeds(3)、What can we learn about the Svalbard Global Seed Vault?A、It helps to pay the shipping cost. B、No one can take seeds out of there. C、There are no fees to store seeds there. D、It mainly receives seeds from farmers.(4)、What is Cary Fowler's attitude towards the Seed Vault?A、He feels it is very important. B、He is surprised at it. C、He thinks it costs too much. D、He is uncertain about it. -
3、 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
By my mid-20s, I'd finished my master in psychology, and I was working in Dublin as a health researcher. It was mostly data and statistics work staring at a screen. I was earning more than most of my friends, living the city life, going out at weekends. I had a good pension (养老金) and annual leave but it caused a lot of anxiety and worry. I was really unhappy.
I wanted to get back to feeling passionate about something so I started thinking about the things I used to love. As a child, I'd always been involved in the outdoors, and I used to love hiking but all that had stopped after secondary school. I decided to volunteer with a local youth group and within a month, I'd gone camping with them. I absolutely loved it. It was likes switching on a lightbulb. This was what I'd been missing.
I started taking courses in mountain skills and wilderness first aid, and by August I was working my usual job in the week, and I was a climbing club leader at weekends. I loved connecting with nature, connecting with other people.
Through all this, I learnt about the whole field of nature-based therapies (疗法). It was the perfect fit to combine my psychology background with my passion for the outdoors. I began taking courses in wild therapy, forest bathing and ecopsychology. I left my government job and in July 2020 I launched my business Nature Therapy Ireland, which is booming now.
I'd thought I'd always live in a city but last year, I moved to Tipperary to live at the foot of a mountain, surrounded by nature. If I'm feeling stressed, I can step outside in my bare feet and stand on the grass to ground myself. In Dublin, the front door felt like a barrier—I had to have my keys, my phone, my jacket before I could even go out and find a green space. My life now is leading nature connection hikes and forest bathing walks. My salary has halved for the moment but I've adjusted. I've never looked back.
(1)、What did the writer think of her job in Dublin?A、Stressful. B、Valueless. C、Insecure. D、Demanding.(2)、What does the underlined sentence mean in Paragraph 2?A、She enjoyed her voluntary work. B、She realized what she really loved. C、Recalling the past made her happy. D、A bright future was in store for her.(3)、What drove the writer to launch her business Nature Therapy Ireland?A、Her adventurous experience. B、Her leadership and background. C、Her connection with other people. D、Her major and passion for nature.(4)、Why did the writer compare her life in Dublin with that in Tipperary?A、To highlight how boring city life was. B、To call on people to get back to nature. C、To show her satisfaction with her change. D、To indicate how successful her business was. -

5、 第二节阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
What does it mean to be a hero? I think a hero is someone who goes out of his way to make others happy. My hero is Mr. Wright, my chorus(合唱队) teacher.
When I was 12 years old, my grandparents passed away. I was really close to them, and losing them was the hardest thing I've ever had to go through. I couldn't eat, sleep, or think; I felt like I couldn't even breathe. It was as if my whole world had fallen down from under me, and I fell into this huge hole of depression(抑郁).
Although I was battling depression, I was determined to make my high school years the best of my life. It was difficult to be happy, but I had to try. I joined Women's Choir. Mr. Wright was the choral director and he was so funny that the first day, I just knew I had made the best decision of my life.
As the year progressed, I loved chorus more and more. I began to smile again and really enjoy life.
Then one day that all changed. My friends —or those that I thought were my friends —started talking about me behind my back. I was hurt, and I sat by myself. Mr. Wright came over and asked what was wrong. The look in his eyes told me that I could trust him. Trying hard to fight back tears, I told him the whole story. When I finished, he nodded and told me, "If you never learn anything from me, learn this: No one is worth stealing your joy."
Paragraph 1: What Mr. Wright said really struck a chord(心弦) in my heart.
Paragraph 2: Mr. Wright is a hero to everyone he meets.

The Spotlight Effect
Have you ever felt as if the entire world was watching while you made a mistake? Well, here's some good news: it's likely that no one even noticed.
We have this experience not only when we make mistakes but also when we perform well. Every time we do something that is a little different from what we usually do, we may assume that everyone around us will notice. The spotlight effect might happen when we make a mistake in a game, have a bad hair day, or give a terrible answer in class. In these moments, it feels like everyone is watching.
The spotlight effect exists because we all get used to seeing things through our own eyes. Every person is the main character in his or her story, and the events of our lives seem to have great importance.
The spotlight effect is a very common part of the human experience. However, in some cases, it can lead to extreme social anxiety and nervousness around other people. Everyone suffers some degree of social anxiety. We all care about what others think, and we all want to be liked. It's normal to wonder about what effect we have on other people. If someone is so nervous that they can't make good decisions, then it's time to take action and improve the situation.
Learning about the spotlight effect is important because it can help us reduce our anxiety. Next time you feel like everyone is staring at you, remind yourself that it's just your mind playing tricks on you. If you fill your mind with thoughts of your friends and family, it will help you be less self-conscious.
A. However, this can be a problem when the anxiety is too much to handle.
B. That's why fewer people notice the embarrassing circumstances they encounter.
C. Another good exercise is to make an effort to notice the people around you, rather than focusing on yourself.
D. The spotlight effect is a trick of the mind that makes us believe that people notice us more often than they really do.
E. What you can do at this moment is to ignore them.
F. We are so busy examining ourselves that we actually observe very little about everyone around us.
G. It can also appear when we score a big goal, ask someone on a date, or do a good deed.

10、 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D) 中,选出最佳选项。
Forgetting names, faces, or events is a universal human experience; even those who see their minds sharp struggle with memory loss from time to time. Most consider these mental mistakes to be annoyed, and they're seen as a potentially worrisome sign of cognitive(认知的)decline. But neurologist Scott Small, who studies and treats Alzheimer's disease(老年痴呆) at Columbia University, thinks this view of forgetting is all wrong. In fact, some amount of forgetfulness is critical for our minds and relationships to function at their best.
We're developing drugs to protect against memory loss. But many psychologists have joked that what they want is a forgetfulness drug. Too much memory poses a challenge in any long-term relationship. Anger, hatred—they all come from not being able to let go of emotional memories. People who repeatedly think of anger or fear suffer, often in loneliness.
Living in a noisy, ever-changing world, forgetting details is actually a perfect adaptation. Creativity isn't making something out of nothing. It's making connections between already-known elements—ideas, words, visuals, or expressions—to create something new. But to make new connections, the existing connections in your mind have to be loose. If the connections between those elements are too tightly bound in our memory, there's no room for creativity.
What can we do to help our brains forget what we need to forget? One of the best ways to make sure that you don't have a brain that's burning too. hot with bad memories is to stay socially engaged. Another thing to do is to sleep, and sleep well. Many experts have concluded that we sleep in order to forget, so it makes sense that sleep has been shown to improve creativity. If you're short of sleep, your brain is on fire with too many memories. The brain is like a lawn of grass—you need to keep it trimmed(修剪) to make way for new memories, new connections, and new growth.
(1)、What is the first paragraph mainly about?A、The damage of cognitive decline. B、The importance of forgetting things. C、The reasons of getting mental disease. D、The methods of preventing memory loss.(2)、Why is the forgetfulness drug needed?A、Because various pressure makes us sleepless. B、Because some patients forget important things. C、Because too much memory disturbs and bothers us. D、Because many seniors suffer from Alzheimer's disease.(3)、What can we learn from the last two paragraphs?A、Too much memory blocks our creativity. B、Our brain can adapt to ever-changing world. C、Sleeping well contributes to improved attention. D、Bad memory has terrible impact on our social life.(4)、Where is the text probably from?A、A book review. B、An advertisement. C、A science fiction. D、A news report. -
11、 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D) 中,选出最佳选项。
Using CRISPR genome(基因组) editing on a few common crops, a team of plant and soil scientists seeks to greatly increase and speed up carbon storage to help fight climate change.
To prevent dangerous levels of global warming, scientists say it won't be enough to just stop burning fossil fuels that release carbon into the air. Because it's nearly impossible for humanity to do that as fast as is now required, we will also need to pull carbon out of the air and secure it.
Plants are among the best tools we have to do this, since these living solar collectors already capture billions of tons of carbon dioxide each year from the atmosphere through photosynthesis(光合作用). About half of that carbon winds up in roots and eventually the soil, where it can stay for hundreds to thousands of years.
But what if we could create plants and soils that are better at capturing carbon? With CRISPR genome editing—a new molecular(分子的) biology tool that allows scientists to make edits to the DNA code that underpins all life—that might be possible.
Last month, the Innovative Genomics Institute (IGI), a research team founded by CRISPR pioneer Jennifer Doudna, began to explore the idea. With an $11-million donation from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, a team of researchers made a three-year effort using CRISPR to create new crop varieties that photosynthesi ze more efficiently and transport more carbon into the soil. Eventually, the researchers hope to create gene-edited rice and sorghum seeds that could—if planted around the globe—pull more than a billion extra tons of carbon out of the air annually.
It's an ambitious goal, and the team is likely to face numerous challenges in the lab before its CO2-cleaning plants can be put in the ground. Additional social, policy, and ethical considerations will determine whether those crops are widely accepted by farmers. But the researchers believe their ambitious project is beneficial to cope with climate crisis.
(1)、What is the purpose of using CRISPR genome editing on crops?A、To improve soil structure. B、To increase carbon storage. C、To create new crop varieties. D、To help fight climate change.(2)、What does the underlined word "capture" in paragraph 3 mean?A、Mix. B、Release. C、Absorb. D、Grab.(3)、What can be inferred from this text?A、CO2-cleaning plants can be put in the ground now. B、It is still unknown whether gene-edited crops will be accepted. C、Researchers have successfully created gene-edited rice and sorghum seeds. D、CRISPR genome editing will face so many challenges that it has no future.(4)、What is the researchers' attitude to the gene-edited crops?A、Hopeful. B、Doubtful. C、Indifferent. D、Negative. -

"My mum is my favorite superhero, "he continued." Some might laugh at me for saying something like that. but my mum is the most hard-working person in the world. She raised me and my two brothers alone, and we have never lacked anything. Our family is the most important to her."
Sebastian wet his lips before he continued reading." My mum promised to get us a house by the end of the year. We live in a trailer—a vehicle without an engine. It's a little small with three boys. I don't know if my mum can keep her promise. because she had an accident recently, so I'm helping out, too.
"How are you helping?" a teen girl asked.
"Keep quiet, everyone. Let Sebastian finish reading," Mrs. Evans gently scolded the class.
"My mum is a street sweeper for the city, but she's been staying home, trying to get better. She's on paid sick leave. Someone has to fill in for her. So I went to her boss and started doing her job. I rake(耙) the leaves outside into piles mostly because they 're falling so often now. But I realized how hard it was and that a real superhero doesn't wear a cape (斗篷)or go on adventures. A real hero takes care of his family, and I hope to grow up and be half the hero my mum is. Thank you."
Then came a moment of silence After that, the rest of the class read their essays too, and Sebastian started to feel a bit silly because they all talked about superheroes like Iron Man Thor, and Wonder Woman. He was the only one who had written about a real person.

The village of Dafen, China was once thought (produce) the most oil paintings in the world every year. Recognized as the "world's art factory", Dafen impressed visitors with (it) many workshops, in which painters created mock (模仿的) masterpieces by Van Gogh, Monet and Warhol. But the village was always seen more as a production linea place of culture. Today the future of Dafen may depend on it is able to earn respect of the art world.
Things started to change for Dafen in 2008, when the global financial crisis cut down overseas (order). With more demand coming from the domestic market, artists began painting different subjects. New customers preferred Chinese styles, says painter in Dafen. He learnt the art of Shan Shui which involves representing natural landscapes. In some ways Dafen reflected the broader economy. Loneliness is an emotion. We probably all experience it at some point, but loneliness is very complex and unique to each of us.
. Being alone is a choice. But feeling lonely isn't something we impose (强加于) on ourselves. In other words, you want to be around people, but something is making you feel unwanted, empty, or isolated, so you're not having the meaningful connection you seek.
When does it become a problem? , it can turn into a mental and physical health problem. It can be a symptom or cause of depression. It can affect self-worth. . That's why chronic (长期的) loneliness is linked to increased risk of high blood pressure, obesity and even other serious disorder.
To manage loneliness, you should accept and acknowledge it. Loneliness is a valid feeing. Don't brush it under the carpet, as that doesn't help solve the problem. Smell a flower or take a walk in nature, for example. Celebrate each small achievement. When you decide to change things and seek a connection with others, consider a like-minded group. A client of mine joined a sewing group and it was very successful.
The best approach to helping someone who is lonely is to sensitively ask how they are and what they're doing, and listen to the answer in a non-judgmental way. If you want to invite them to do something with you, do it. If they say no, don't be discouraged from asking again.

Coogle's parent company is winding down a project that used high-lying balloons to provide Internet services to hard-to-reach areas of the world.
The project, known as Loon, started in 2011. It was managed by Alphabet Inc. It aimed to bring connectivity to areas of the world where ground-based cell towers (手机信号塔) were too expensive or too difficult to set up.
But Loon was unable to reduce costs enough to make its business model run, the project' s leader, Alastair Westgarth, said in a blog post. "While we've found a number of willing partners along the way, we haven't found a way to get the costs low enough to build a long-term, competitive business," Westgarh said.
Loon's shutdown isn't surprising, economists said.
Loon's technology sent gas-filled balloons the size of tennis courts into the air. They usually stay at heights of around 60,000 to 75,000 feet. There, onboard communications equipment sent Internet signals back down to earth. The system was able to offer mobile coverage to an area 200 times larger than a traditional ground-based cell tower. However, a carrier would need several balloons at once, each would cost tens of thousands of dollars and last only about five months.
Alphabet wasn't alone in running projects aimed at offering Internet connection to hard-to-reach areas. Companies such as Amazon. com Inc. and Elon Musk's SpaceX have been making efforts to provide Internet connection in such places, using satellites in near Earth orbit.
Over the last few years, Loon's technology has proved successful in some suffering communities. In 2017, the project sent balloons into the skies above Puerto Rico after a terrible hurricane damaged the island's communications facilities. Two years later, soon after a 7. 8 earthquake struck parts of Peru, Loon's balloons began to provide the locals with mobile connectivity.
Rich Devaul, a founder of the project, said the need for mobile connectivity was rapidly rising recently. This made cell towers more cost-effective than he had expected ten years ago, reducing the need for Loon, "The problem got solved faster than we thought," he said in an interview.
(1)、Why is Alphabet shutting down Loon?A、Many local communities disliked the project. B、It was too costly to continue the project. C、The technology was no longer advanced. D、It was too difficult to sot up the systems(2)、How does the author introduce Loon's technology in paragraph 5?A、By describing difficulties in using it. B、By providing research results about it. C、By explaining is advantages and disadvantages. D、By showing its differences from traditional ones.(3)、What can we learn about the technology of Loon?A、It helped areas hit by natural disasters. B、It suited the need of developed countries, C、It was unable to work in terrible weather. D、It was less elective than traditional systen9.(4)、What was unexpected for Rich Devaul?A、Communications problems became worse. B、Cell towers became more economical in a short time. C、Other companies would run similar projectsD The Internet connections were getting faster.

20、 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
The rapid and uncontrolled expansion of today's cities is causing anxiety not only among urban planners and architects, but also experts in the field of public health. They are alarmed that the disorder of the urban expansion is robbing the population of its basic health and well-being through environmental pollution, inadequate housing and the increasing numbers of neighbors who do not know neighbors.
Beijing, a city of over 21 million residents, is an example of this social isolation. Until the early 1980s, the Chinese capital, was constructed as quantities of Siheyuan. This open structure greatly strengthened contact between neighbors, encouraged the sharing of resources, and formed close relations between families. Because of these characteristics, these structures were described as "collections of small rural villages". Until the mid-1980s, only a few skyscrapers disrupted the harmony of the landscape. Today Beijing has the look and feel of a modern city, where these "small rural villages" have been replaced by towering skyscrapers. This striking change is not limited to outer structures; it has also dramatically changed the closeness of human relations.
Physical isolation has destroyed the local sense of solidarity (团结), and contributed to the destruction of what were once united family groups. As the distance between home and the workplace has also increased considerably, workers now find themselves devoting what was once valuable family time to exhausting commutes in overcrowded buses or subways.
The disordered growth of today's cities can no longer be ignored. The great challenge is how to improve the quality of urban life by ensuring harmonious growth. Skyscrapers should not be the only view people can see in a city. Old-fashioned but unique architecture reflects history, character — even the culture of a city. Cities should learn from the experiences of other cities with similar characteristics. This effort requires not only the participation of urban planners but public health and environmental experts, politicians, and fundamentally, the communities themselves.
(1)、What is the first paragraph mainly about?A、People in the city don't know their neighbors. B、Experts are concerned about housing problems. C、Cities' disordered development has caused problems. D、Environmental pollution is harmful to people's basic health.(2)、What can we learn about Beijing at present?A、People in Beijing become isolated. B、Siheyuan in Beijing becomes precious. C、The outer structure of Beijing becomes messy. D、Skyscrapers make Beijing become international.(3)、What does isolation in physical space probably lead to?A、Loss the citizens' sense of responsibility. B、People's freedom to enjoy the leisure time. C、Reconstruction of the united family groups. D、Workers being worn out on the way to work.(4)、Which statement will the author probably agree with?A、Cities should completely follow the pattern of other cities. B、The development of a city is at the expense of its elegance. C、Old-fashioned architectures and skyscrapers can coexist in a city. D、Communities play the most important role in harmonious growth of cities.
