Dealing with Stress in Sports

Sports are a great way to have fun while staying fit. Sports also teach important life lessons like working as a team. . Having a healthy attitude about sports and learning to deal with the stress that comes with competing can help you perform your best. 

Competing always leads to some stress. And that can be good.. But too much stress can take the fun out of a sport and make it hard to perform. If you think there might be too much stress around competing, talk to your parents and coach. Making some changes can help. If you have too much going on, think about limiting practice time or only doing one sport or activity per season. 

. So it's important to know how to deal with it. Trying different ways during practice helps you know what will work best for you during competition. You can try to take a deep breath and hold it in for about 5 seconds, then release (释放) it slowly. Repeat those five times. You can also think positively and develop positive self-talk, like saying "I learn from my mistakes." "I'm in control of my feelings." "I can make this goal!" to help keep the negative (消极的) thoughts away. 

Keep stress levels down when you aren't competing.. Besides, doing something fun and relaxing is great, such as taking a break from competing and going for a walk, riding a bike, seeing a movie or hanging out with friends. 

Finally don't forget that no one is perfect. Everyone makes mistakes in sports. It is part of the game.? 

Whether you play on the school team or at a weekend pick-up game, the point is to have fun. By keeping that as the first place, you can learn to deal with the stress that is a natural part of competition.

The United Kingdom, Great Britain, Britain, England-many people are confused by what these different names mean. So what is the difference between them, if any? Getting to know a little bit about British history will help you solve this puzzle.

In the 16th century, the nearby country of Wales was joined to the Kingdom of England. Later, in the 18th century, the country Scotland was joined to create the Kingdom of Great Britain. In the 19th century, the Kingdom of Ireland was added to create the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. Finally, in the 20th century, the southern part of Ireland broke away from the UK, which resulted in the full name we have today: "the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Most people just use the shortened name: "the United Kingdom" or "the UK". People from the UK are called "British", which means the UK is also often referred to as Britain or Great Britain.

The four countries that belong to the United Kingdom work together in some areas. They use the same flag, known as the Union Jack, as well as share the same currency and military defence. However, they also have some differences. For example, England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland all have different education systems and legal systems. They also have their own traditions, like their own national days and national dishes. And they even have their own football teams for competitions like the World Cup!

The United Kingdom has a long and interesting history to explore, which can help you understand much more about the country and its traditions. Almost everywhere you go in the UK, you will be surrounded by evidence of four different groups of people who took over at different times throughout history. The first group, the Romans, came in the first century. Some of their great achievements included building towns and roads. Next, the Anglo-Saxons arrived in the fifth century. They introduced the beginnings of the English language, and changed the way people built houses. The Vikings came in the eighth century, left behind lots of new vocabulary, and also the names of many locations across the UK. The last group were the Normans. They conquered England after the well-known Battle of Hastings in the 11th century. They had castles built all around England, and made changes to the legal system. The Normans were French, so many French words slowly entered into the English language.

Habit is a behaviour you do regularly (有规律的). As a professor who studies how to help students become better readers and writers, I can tell you that research shows habits have a loop (循环). Here are the things you need to make a studying loop: 

●A set time to study every day. 

●A cue (提示) to start studying. 

●An environment that helps you stick to your studying routine (常规). 

●A prize for studying. 

When you do things at the same time every day, it is easier to remember to do them. To determine how much time you should set aside each day to study, multiply (乘) your grade level by 10 minutes. That means if you're in third grade, you would plan to spend about 30 minutes per day studying. Spending more time than that on a regular basis can cause stress, anxiety and possibly destroy healthy sleep habits. 

Studying at the same time every day is one cue. but you may need something more specific when first forming your habit. This can be a calendar reminder you set on your phone. or something as simple as a card with the word "study" printed on the front. 

To help yourself study, you need a place set up for work and not for doing other things. Do not study on your bed— 4that's for sleeping— 4or in front of the television, or anywhere it's difficult to hold and use the materials you need. Best option: a table or desk with good lighting. Your study place should limit distractions (干扰). That includes other people's conversations and all media: TV, video games, social media, texts or music. 

The prize. That said, after you finish studying, you can give yourself a little gaming or social media time as your prize. With time, the studying itself will become its own prize. Improving your knowledge and skills will give you a sense of achievement and make you more confident and happier at school. But while forming your study habit, a really fun prize will help you stick with it.

HALIFAX, Nova Scotia — officials in Canada's Atlantic Coast province of Nova Scotia said Saturday a wildfire that forced thousands of people to leave their homes over the past week is now largely controlled because of rain. 

David Steeves, a technician of forest resources, said the fire in the Halifax area is about 85% controlled, sits at 9.5 square kilometre and is unlikely to grow thanks to the firefighting efforts and long-awaited rain. The news was also good across the province, where Premier Tim Houston said the total number of active wildfires reduced from 10 in the morning to five by mid-afternoon. "If you step outside, you will see something beautiful, rain, and hopefully lots of it," he told an afternoon briefing (简报). 

The blaze that broke out Sunday in the Halifax area raced through a number of other places, burning up about 200 buildings — including 151 homes — and forcing the evacuation (疏散) of more than 16,000 people. Meanwhile, at the provincial wildfire centre in Shubenacadie, north of Halifax, about 20 Canadian Armed Forces soldiers stood in the pouring rain outside a light armored vehicle (装甲车). Lt. Col. Michael Blanchette said the soldiers had arrived on a "fact-finding task" to see what support was needed in the effort to fight the fires.

In Shelburne County, meanwhile, 6,700 people — about half the city's population — remained out of their homes as the blaze that forced their evacuation continued to burn out of control. 

Dave Rockwood, a spokesman for the Department of Natural Resourees, said it remained to be seen that there would be no further growth and that firefighters could use more direct ways to control it. Two other fires which were considered out of control on Saturday morning were finally controled later in the day, he said.

It's a great pity that I had not put forth the amount of effort required. I had spent too much timed playing with my friends instead of improving myself. I had let down my teacher, who was the kindest, sweetest, and prettiest one I had ever known. She laughed often, and never threatened any of us, yet she was able to "read" the children, control the class, and teach effectively. Miss Pratt put a lot of herself into her work. Every day near the close of school, she would read to us, or even better, tell us stories about when she was a little girl. Most importantly, she made us feel that she cared about us and that we were important. 

Because of a serious car accident when I was three and a half years old, I had a sear (伤疤) below my nose that was the result of a torn upper lip. Everything else had healed up without any after effects physically, but my emotions remained scarred. Meanwhile, having been called "Chief Running Nose" and "Scarface" by many children, my confidence had suffered. Although my parents and relatives referred to me as pretty, I did not see myself that way. 

Focusing on my scar, I could not appreciate any redeeming features (可取之处). At the end of one school day, I remained in my classroom, waiting for the arrival of my mother, who was coming to take me to an appointment close to the school. Miss Pratt sat at her desk with a fellow teacher and chatted.

The Water-Splashing Festival (泼水节) is a traditional festival for the Dai people in Yunnan Province.  marks the official New Year celebration for over one million Dai people living in China.  (hold) during the sixth month of the Dai calendar, it usually lasts three or four days. 

For the Dai people in Yunnan province, water is a symbol  goodness and the most valuable thing. During the festival, both men and women enjoy  (them) in the game of water-splashing. They are armed with buckets of water to make each other  (complete) wet, wishing all good luck and happiness to happen to them. 

During the festival, the door of every house  (decorate) with colorful pieces of paper. All the  (villager) wear their unique clothes. Mutton and beef are served with delicious rice cakes, rice noodles, and rice wine. The festival is celebrated with  variety of activities, including singing and dancing, firework displays and boat racing. Dai People will also invite people celebrate the festival. from other ethnic minorities (少数民族) and tourists  (come) from afar (从远处) to celebrate the festival.

The Water Splash Festival is the Dai people's respect to water, music, dance and food. It is also a  (culture) bridge between China and Southeast Asian countries that share the same festive culture of the water-splashing.

With spring approaching, a foot of snow that had fallen rapidly melt (融化). The runoff from the hills had filled the rivers and formed little 1 of water in the road. Broken tree branches were everywhere. I was 2 home and suddenly saw one of these branches 3 across the rad. It was big enough to damage my car if I didn't 4 in time so I stepped on the brakes and 5 my emergency flashers. 6 there were no other cars there yet. But I knew that it would only be a matter of 7 before one crashed into that branch, causing a (n) 8 and even death.

Many people love to listen to music while driving. Thanks to the world's musical roads, drivers now don't need to turn the radio on. 

A musical road can create music when a car tires go over grooves (凹槽) on the rad. To produce beautiful music, drivers must pass over the grooves at a certain speed. Signs often tell drivers the right speed. 

. Since the mid-1990, musical rads have appeared in many different countries. . To warn drivers to the incoming music, all the roads are marked by colored musical notes that are painted on these roads. Drivers can decide whether to go over the grooves or not because they are set on the side of the road. 

In Hungary, there is a musical road in honor of one of the country's most popular musical performers—Laszlo Bodi. Bodi was the lead singer for the band Republic. . Sally, Bodi passed away in 2013. But people still remember him as there's a road where drivers can hear 30 seconds of the Republic song "Road 67". 

. In Indonesia, a road plays the first six notes of "Happy Birthday". The fifth note is a little out of tune, though. This "mistake" keeps drivers awake and aware, and it has reduced the number of traffic accidents. Such is the power of music and musical roads.

Phonetic (语音) information—the smallest sound elements of speech - is considered by researchers to be the basis of language. Babies are thought to learn these small sound elements and add them together to make words. But a new study suggests that phonetic information is learnt too late and slowly for this to be the case. Instead, rhythmic (有韵律的) speech helps babies learn language and is effective even in the first few months of life. 

Researchers from the Trinity College Dublin investigated babies' ability to process phonetic information during their first year. Their study, published in the journal Nature Communications. found that phonetic information wasn't successfully encoded (编码) until seven months old, and did not occur very often at 11 months old when babies began to say their first words. From then individual speech sounds are still added in very slowly—too slowly to form the basis of language. 

The researchers recorded patterns of brain activity in 50 babies at four, seven, and eleven months old as they watched a video of a primary school teacher singing 18 nursery rhymes (童谣) to a baby. They found that phonetic encoding in babies appeared inchmeal over the first year of life, beginning with labial sounds (e.g. "d" for "daddy") and nasal sounds (e.g. "m" for "mummy"), with the "read out" progressively looking more like that of adults. 

"The reason why we use nursery rhymes is because that is the best way for babies to discover and connect sounds with language, so we are teaching them how to speak," said Giovanni Di Liberto, lead author of the study at Trinity College Dublin in Ireland. "Parents should talk and sing to their babies as much as possible or use baby-directed speech because it will make a difference to language outcome," she added. 

Every year on 2 February, Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog (土拨鼠), comes out of his hole in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. If the sun is shining and he sees his shadow before going back into his hole, it means winter will last six more weeks. But if the day is cloudy, spring will come early. Curiously, Phil is not alone. In the region around Milan, tradition has it that if the bear comes out of his hole on a sunny day, he will be able to make himself a nice dry bed and then he'll want to keep on sleeping. This will show that the winter will continue. But if it's a rainy day, the bear will have to stay out—and spring will come soon. 

"These traditions can be traced back to Indo-European civilisations 3,000-5,000 years ago," says Venetian historian Elena Righetto. "That's why they are spread all over Europe," she explains. The deepest meaning of the tradition, according to Righetto, is in its seemingly contradictory (矛盾的) nature. It might seem illogical (不合逻辑的) that cold days indicate the coming of spring, or that groundhogs and bears would decide to stay out just when the weather is bad. 

"The idea is that the darkest moment, when everything seems to go wrong, is when we experience a rebirth, a new life," explains Righetto. There is a thought that life comes from darkness, just as plants start to grow from the seeds left underground during winter. This thought is so powerful that it crossed countries and survived centuries. 

Traditions don't protect people from bad weather, death, or illness, but they protect them emotionally from some of the anxiety related to those coming realities. They don't solve the real problem, but they solve the mental problem—they help you live through the hard times of life. In a way, if we can believe in the magical powers of groundhogs and bears, we might find even an extended (延长的) winter a bit warmer and friendlier. 

Kathy and Brandon Gunn are a couple from Michigan, and they were married in September 2007. One gift that they received on their wedding day was a box from Kathy's great aunt Alison. On the front of the gift, it read, "Do NOT open until 1st disagreement."

The couple had forgotten about the present for years, even though their marriage had disagreements and arguments. It wasn't until they were thinking about getting a gift for a friend's upcoming wedding that they remembered their one gift that was still to be opened. 

"I thought back to our wedding day (nearly 9 years ago) and tried to recall the gifts that had meant the most to me," Kathy wrote in a post on Facebook. "The funny thing? The gift that meant the very most was still sitting in a cupboard. . . unopened. All along, we assumed that the contents of that box held the key to saving a marriage—an age-old secret—unknown to us. After all, my great aunt and uncle had been married for nearly half a century."

When Kathy and Brandon finally opened the mysterious present, what they found inside was so sweet. There was one note and some money, and addressed to Kathy. It read, "Kathy, go get a pizza, shrimp, or something you both like. Aunt Alison."

Brandon also had a note addressed to him. It read, "Brandon, go get flowers and a bottle of wine. Aunt Alison."

"For nine years that box sat high on a shelf in various cupboards gathering dust, yet it somehow taught us about inclusion (包容), understanding and patience. Today, we decided to open that box, because I finally had a realization," Kathy wrote in her post. "I realized that the tools for creating and maintaining a strong, healthy marriage were never within that box-they were within us."
