Originally constructed around 256 BCE by the State of Qin as an irrigation (灌溉) and flood control system, Dujiangyan is a remarkable example of ancient (engineer) skill and is still in use today.

During the Warring States period, people living along the banks of the Min River were troubled by annual flooding. Irrigation engineer Li Bing (lead) a team to construct an embankment (堤坝) to redirect part of the river's flow upon thorough investigation. Then they cut a channel through Mount Yulei to let out the extra water. During the construction, cutting the channel proved to be a much more challenging task than (anticipate), as the tools available could not break through the hard rock of the mountain. Therefore, they used a (combine) of fire and water to heat and cool the rocks until they broke could be removed. Once completed, the system prevented floods and made Sichuan one of China's most productive (agriculture) regions by using the redirected water irrigation.

Now if you visit Dujiangyan, you will see an unusual construction looks like a fish's mouth. This famous attraction, Yuzui, together with two other important parts, namely, Feishayan and Baopingkou, (design) scientifically to control the water flow throughout the year. Recognized as UNESCO heritage site, Dujiangyan has irrigated farms while preventing floods for over 2,000 years.

This was proven6, though, years later. I was working at a minimum-wage job,7to support my family. One day, I found myself with just 10 dollars in my wallet but the petrol tank on my old car was empty. I8 at a convenience store and bought 5 dollars'9 of gas. As I waited in line to pay, I saw a woman10 searching her purse for money to buy milk for her children. For a second,11 held me back: My math told me I had nothing left. The next moment, however, my emotions urged me to offer her my last 5 dollars! I felt12. It didn't make13 sense to me, but   I was sure this small sum of money made a big difference.

  • 4、The idea that night owls who don't go to bed until the early hours struggle to get anything done during the day may have to be revised. It turns out that staying up late could be good for our brain power as research suggests that people who identify as night owls could be sharper than those who go to bed early.

Researchers led by academics at Imperial College London studied data from the UK Biobank study on more than 26,000 people who had completed intelligence, reasoning, reaction time and memory tests. They then examined how participants' sleep duration, quality, and chronotype (时间型) affected brain performance. They found that those who stay up late and those classed as "intermediate" had "superior cognitive function", while morning larks had the lowest scores. Going to bed late is strongly associated with creative types. Artists, authors and musicians known to be night owls include James Joyce and Lady Gaga.

But while politicians like Barack Obama famously seemed to thrive on little sleep, the study found that sleep duration is important for brain function, with those getting between seven and nine hours of shut-eye each night performing best in cognitive tests. Prof Daqing Ma, the co-leader of the study, added, "We found that sleep duration has a direct effect on brain function, and we believe that actively managing sleep patterns is really important for boosting and safeguarding the way our brains work. We'd ideally like to see policy interventions (干预) to help sleep patterns improve in the general population."

Some experts, however, urged caution in interpreting the findings. Jessica Chelekis, a sleep expert at Brunel University London, said there were "important limitations" to the study as the research did not account for education attainment, or include the time of day the cognitive tests were conducted in the results. The main value of the study was challenging stereotypes around sleep, she added.

(1)、Why are James Joyce and Lady Gaga mentioned in paragraph 2?
A、To provide examples of intermediate people. B、To suggest most successful artists are night owls. C、To prove artists have superior cognitive function. D、To show the link between late hours and creativity.
(2)、Which statement will Prof Daqing Ma probably agree with?
A、All sleep lengths equally improve brain function. B、Parents shouldn't intervene in children's sleep pattern. C、Schools should start later to fit teens' body clocks. D、Sleep duration is more important than sleep quality.
(3)、What does the underlined word "stereotypes" mean in the fourth paragraph?
    A、Scientific discoveries. B、Personal preferences. C、Fixed beliefs. D、Recent trends.
(4)、What is the author's attitude towards the new study?
    A、Objective. B、Skeptical. C、Appreciative D、Critical.
  • 5、Soratobu Medaka, a children's book, tells the story of tiny medaka fish riding on a bird to a distant pond. It has delighted children, but now it's revealed to be true.

Researchers have long struggled to explain how fish turn up in lakes far from other bodies of water, a mystery even Charles Darwin noted in 1859, when he suggested that aquatic (水生的) hatchlings might stick to the feet of birds, though his bright idea remained a theory.

In 2019, Yao Akifumi, a biology student then, wondered if Darwin might have been right and further wondered if fish-hunting birds might transport egg-bearing aquatic plants stuck to their feet. To test this, he set up two ponds one metre apart, one containing 36plants and the other without, both equipped with camera traps. After six months, some plants had switched ponds, and one camera captured a bird flying away with a plant on its foot. Next, Yao aimed to see if fish eggs could weather the journey being carried out of water. He attached tiny medaka eggs to aquatic plants and removed them for zero to 24hours—at favorable hatching conditions — before returning them.

In a paper in Science of Nature, Mr. Yao reports that the medaka eggs can successfully hatch after up to 18 hours out of the water. Eggs without a plant leaf to attach to rarely survived a few hours. The big drop in survival was at 16.3 hours, when half the eggs became lifeless.

Whether any egg could survive that long, given that a bird's average flight-speed is around 39kph, is doubtful, says Mr Yao, since wind exposure during such a long journey would dry them out.

Shorter journeys, however, are certainly possible. And since many other medaka-like species are found throughout Asia, the chances are high that hitchhiking (搭便车) explains how they have ended up in lakes with seemingly no connection to other water bodies. Yet again, it would seem, Darwin's theories turn out to be correct.

(1)、Why does the author mention Darwin's idea?
A、To introduce an academic term. B、To provide research background. C、To question a well-known theory. D、To explore new research methods.
(2)、What evidence did Yao find to support his assumption?
A、Birds flying between ponds. B、Fish eggs surviving on plants. C、A plant growing in both ponds. D、A bird carrying a plant on its foot.
(3)、What may increase medaka eggs' survival?
    A、Birds' flying route. B、Wind exposure. C、Supporting leaves. D、Longer journeys.
(4)、What is the main idea of the text?
A、Children's book inspires research. B、Origin of fish has been uncovered. C、Fish's hitch riding has been proven. D、Eggs and plants have a close relation.
  • 6、In the early 19th century, New England farmers, tired of wrestling with their poor land, journeyed to the Midwest. In states like Illinois and Iowa, they found rich, black soil. Unfortunately, many soon felt like thirsty sailors in the middle of the ocean—water everywhere but not a drop to drink. They were surrounded by fertile soil, but had to stop every few seconds to remove the sticky dirt off their iron plows (犁) with large wooden paddles. This dilemma caught the attention of John Deere, a blacksmith who moved to Illinois in 1836.

Deere decided to look into the problem. From his previous work on plows, he knew that dirt was less likely to stick to highly polished metal. That thought was in the back of his mind when he visited a sawmill (锯木厂) in 1837 and noticed a broken saw made of steel. Deere brought it home and began making a better plow. The plow he wanted would have to cut deep into the soil at a sharp angle so that dirt would fall off, yet it could not put too much burden on the horses pulling it. After several experiments, Deere constructed a new plow that featured wood handles. It proved a success. Unlike the old iron plows, Deere's not only had a blade from which dirt fell away cleanly, but it also turned the soil more efficiently and quickly.

Demand for Deere's plows increased sharply, but production was limited by the shortage of polished steel. Initially, Deere could only produce a few plows each year. However, Deere's persistence paid off as he sourced cheaper steel from Pittsburgh. Amazingly, in 1857, his company manufactured and sold 10, 000 plows!

Deere, a perfectionist, continually improved his plows, introducing multiple new versions in a single year. While this slowed down his production ability, it ensured Deere a solid reputation among his customers. Deere plows became world famous in the 1870s when they outshone the competition in a demonstration in France. That same decade, his company built its first riding plow and designed the leaping deer as its trademark.

(1)、What was the main problem the newly settled farmers met?
A、A shortage of fresh water. B、A lack of rich farming land. C、The trouble in handling the soil on plows. D、The difficulty of growing plants in season.
(2)、Which aspect of the new plow does paragraph 2 focus on?
A、Its unique features. B、Its operating method. C、Its invention process. D、Its working efficiency.
(3)、The last paragraph is mainly about Deere plows'____.
    A、wide recognition B、marketing strategy C、technical standards D、production challenges
(4)、Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A、A Famed Farmer B、A Successful Company C、A Sticky Problem D、A Historical Experiment

    Kindergarten Grandma

Helen entered my life after a parent approached me and asked if I would consider having a grandparent volunteer in my kindergarten class. My answer was an immediate yes.

As a teacher, I tried to make the classroom feel like a family. Many children did not have grandparents or had ones who lived far away, so I thought this was a wonderful opportunity for children to be taken care of by an older adult. I introduced her to the class by the name Grandma Helen.

I was not quite certain what to expect when Helen first came to us. I had imagined a little old lady, possibly weak, who would read and spend time with the children. Little did I know that Helen would walk into the classroom with a spring in her step and light in her eyes. She said she was available up to three days a week for about four hours. She was anxious to help in any way she could.

Helen's enthusiasm and energy level were so high that I would joke that if we ran a race, she would win. She was agile (敏捷的), getting up and down from those little kindergarten chairs even though "grown-up" chairs were available.

The children were attracted by her right away. It turned out that she did not want to read to groups of children, but really enjoyed sitting at learning stations while children were working. There they would talk and she would make note of their questions and concerns. Not all children were able to focus and finish their work on time, so she helped the ones who needed a little extra guidance. She had endless patience helping a child called Bob learn to cut with scissors.

Wintertime always brought the battle of the coats and boots. The children had about twenty to thirty minutes of outside activities but they always had trouble dealing with the zippers (拉链) on their jackets.

  • 12、It's now been 10 years since I sold everything and left the United States to travel the world. Here are some of my best travel planning tips to help you have a great trip.

I don't know how to answer when readers ask how many days they should spend traveling in a particular country or city. The truth is that I have no idea what you'll enjoy or who you'll meet. My advice is to pick a starting point, 1 or 2 must-do activities, and an ending point(or not). Be open to changing your plans if you learn about something along the way!

Learn a few foreign words. There's no need to be fluent in order to visit a foreign country. However, mastering a few phrases in the local language can improve your travel experience. But remember that this is your problem, not theirs. Raising your voice doesn't magically help Mexicans understand English. Try hand signals, images on your phone, or Google Translate!

Write down the address of your hotel.Sometimes, after a long flight playing games on your smartphone, your battery could end up dead. And if you didn't write down where you're staying, how will you tell the taxi driver?

Read a book about the country. Before you travel to a new country, I recommend reading a good book about it to learn more about its history and culture before you arrive. Your travel experience will be different if you already know about your destination.

    A. Pick a starting point.

    B. Be flexible and don't over plan.

    C. Then just let the universe determine the rest.

    D. You are sure to benefit from these simple images.

    E. This could be as simple as a popular novel by a local author.

    F. Not being able to communicate while traveling can be frustrating.

    G. I also recommend noting down your room number after you check in.

  • 13、Extreme weather events like heatwaves, heavy rain, and droughts stress plants, which can reduce crop yields and threaten the long-term health of our farms, forests, and biodiversity. There is an unmet need to monitor precisely how plants respond to these changes. While drones and aircraft have improved plant monitoring from above, they only capture (捕获) surface-level information. They also need adjustments to be able to track plants accurately over time. Other small sensors that can capture changes at the individual plant level are inconvenient since they often require on-site personnel to install and manually check each sensor.

"The traditional methods may work well for some purposes, but they are difficult to operate and quite expensive," explains Kaori Kohzuma, the developer of sensors, "In order to continuously monitor small changes, we needed a new solution."

To address these issues, a team of researchers developed a novel sensor that attaches directly to the underside of plant leaves. This small device uses a spectroscopic (光谱的) sensor and light source to measure leaf color without blocking sunlight, and it can track changes in the same spot over time. Powered by a battery, with Wi-Fi data transfer and waterproofing, the sensor can work outdoors for over a month, allowing for extended data collection.

This sensor performed well when compared with a commercial spectrometer on about 90 leaves from 30 different plant species. It accurately distinguished colors across seven out of its eight detectable wavelengths.

In an outdoor trial to test performance under real life conditions, they attached the sensor to tree leaves to track changes in leaf color during autumn, leaf fall, and aging over two weeks. They were able to observe a decrease in chlorophyll (叶绿素) — an indicator of plant stress — and how the plant's response varied with sunlight intensity.

"This sensor can accurately monitor plant health and stress through leaf color and light reflection data. Its low cost makes it possible to place multiple sensors across various locations," summarizes Kohzuma.

(1)、What is mainly talked about in paragraph 1?
A、The effect of extreme weather on plants. B、The importance of aircraft in agriculture. C、The disadvantages of some small sensors. D、The necessity of precise plant monitoring.
(2)、How does the author introduce the novel sensor in paragraph 3?
A、By giving examples. B、By listing figures. C、By raising questions. D、By making statements.
(3)、Why is chlorophyll mentioned in the text?
A、To stress its importance to plants. B、To compare different plant species. C、To show the accuracy of the sensor. D、To introduce the principle of the sensor.
(4)、What does Kohzuma think of the new sensor?
    A、It is adjustable. B、It is affordable. C、It is remote-controlled. D、It is power-free.
  • 14、Like many fans, Jerad Castillo has a box full of tickets from the games and concerts he's attended. There are some great memories — like a ticket for the U. S. Open Golf Tournament in 2019. And painful ones — like one from when his beloved Texas Rangers lost in Game 5 of the World Series in 2010.

But Castillo hasn't added to his collection for a while. Tickets are digital now, but the 40-year-old Fort Worth resident still misses his treasured stubs (票根). "You have your digital ticket, but as soon as you enter the event and that day goes, you have nothing to look back on that, you know?" he says.

But there's good news for fans like Castillo. Some sports teams and concert promoters are starting to sell physical tickets again. Not the ones from the past, with the bar codes and the tear-off stubs. These are much higher quality, usually with a nice photo or art design. Typically, they are issued to mark a big game or moment.

They are becoming a bit of a hit, according to Weldon, Williams & Lick (WW&L), a printing company that is working to produce the tickets. "There's still always that connection to an actual ticket," says Evan Gitomer, the company's chief revenue officer. "It reminds you, and it takes you back, just like the sense of smell."

WW&L has been producing tickets for over a century. Today, they've found a niche producing paper souvenir tickets for big events. These tickets usually sell for $15 to $20. They're not included in the game's actual admission price, so some fans resent having to pay more money later for a ticket to a game or event they already attended. But they are selling and the company's income has more than doubled in the last couple of years.

"There's probably some type of limit to where this can actually get to," Gitomer says. But he adds that every time he thinks that, he bumps into a fan who appreciates the chance to own a physical reminder of a game or a concert from a favorite artist.

(1)、What differs the new physical tickets from the previous ones?
A、They are made of plastic. B、They are sweet to smell. C、They have photos on them. D、They can be obtained online.
(2)、What does the underlined word "resent" in paragraph 5 probably mean?
    A、Admit. B、Hate. C、Consider. D、Suggest.
(3)、What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A、Some fans like souvenir tickets. B、Gitomer has some fans of his own. C、There is a limit to buying paper tickets. D、Not all have the chance to get souvenir tickets.
(4)、What can be a suitable title for the passage?
A、Many People Miss Paper Tickets B、Why Are Paper Tickets Disappearing? C、Digital Tickets Are Being Resisted D、Who Are Fond of Physical Tickets?
  • 15、On Sunday, attendees had been trapped after storms turned Nevada's Black Rock Desert into a mud bath. Close to an inch of rainfall starting on Friday flooded the area and forced event organizers to close access to the Burning Man Festival until vehicles could safely pass and to warn campers to save food and water.

Despite reports of stuck vehicles and spotty Wi-Fi service, several attendees who spoke to NPR said the wet weather hadn't lowered their spirits. "I would say honestly, walking around the city, spirits are pretty high," attendee Anya Kamenetz said on Sunday.

The challenging conditions are testing a community of so-called "burners" which regards self-support and common effort as its main principles. Event volunteer Josh Lease said that in true Burning Man spirit, people are sharing warm clothes and phone chargers.

"It's like any other Burning Man, just muddy," Josh Lease told NPR on Saturday evening. "The warnings do sound very terrible, and of course, the organization has to tell people to take care," said Claudia Peschiutta, an editor who attended the event, "but I haven't seen one person who seems worried about it at all."

Sense of loss and upset, however, started to affect some attendees by Sunday. In rainy Burning Mans past, longtime "burner" Joe Bamberg said he's seen carpets and clothes eventually dry out. But this time, all was wet and seemed to never dry up. He expressed he would have no plan to come again.

At the same time, officials were investigating a death at the site. They said on Saturday that a person died during the event but offered few details, including whether the death was weather-related.

The muddy road is expected to dry up starting Monday, which is forecast to see clear skies, promising long waits in traffic on the final day of the annual event. But event organizers have yet to give detailed information of when gates will open to cars.

(1)、How did Anya Kamenetz feel when trapped?

(3)、What can we infer from Joe Bamberg's words?
A、It seldom rains at this time. B、He wouldn't come any longer. C、He felt frightened at the bad news. D、People should prepare more goods.

Alex sat quietly at the back of his Chinese class, his eyes fixed on the textbook before him. As a shy and unnoticed student, he felt like a lone wolf, struggling against the complexities of high school life. Ms Lau, his Chinese teacher, was a light in his otherwise dark world. Her warm smile and gentle behavior made her stand out among the sea of teachers. She was the only one who seemed to understand his conservative nature, always encouraging him to step out of his comfort zone.

One day, after class, Ms Lau approached Alex with excitement shining in her eyes. "Alex, I have an offer for you," she said, her voice filled with enthusiasm. "I am organizing a cultural exchange program to China, and I believe it would be a great opportunity for you to explore a new world."

Alex's heart skipped a beat, the prospect of traveling to a foreign country both exciting and terrifying. He hesitated, unsure if he had the courage to start such an adventure. But Ms Lau's firm belief in him gave him the push he needed to take a leap of faith.

Under Ms Lau's guidance, Alex began preparing for the trip. He got really interested in Chinese culture and learned about its long history and traditions. Ms Lau became his mentor(导师), teaching him not only the language but also invaluable life lessons. She taught him the importance of being confident and not giving up, reminding him that growth only happens outside one's comfort zone.

The day of departure arrived, and Alex found himself on a plane headed for China. He couldn't help but feel amazed as he stepped off the plane and into a world so different from his own. Kunshan is the birthplace of Kunqu, blends poetry, music, intricate costumes and graceful performances. In Kunshan City, the melodies of Kunqu Opera are not confined to the stages of grand theaters, but ring out in (expected) scenes — school bells, fitness routines and even bus stop illustrations. In the streets of Kunshan, this ancient art form continues to find new life, (delicate) balancing preserving its timeless beauty and embracing the demands of modernity.

For performers like You Tengteng, actress at the Kunshan Contemporary Kunqu Theater, the act is both a challenge and a passion. You and her colleagues often discuss their latest performance (strategy), not in a traditional theater but on Douyin. In partnership with the platform, You and other performers livestream their Kunqu shows for 20 hours each month. Their goal is simple yet ambitious: (reach) a new generation of audiences who might hesitate to sit through a two or three-hour-long performance in an opera house.

To draw audiences in the digital age, the performers have condensed the intricate art form into digestible one-hour segments, (invite) viewers to experience Kunqu in more relaxed settings, whether at a café in a museum.

The strategy (seem) to be working, particularly among Chinese youth. After performances, it is not uncommon to see young fans eagerly lining up for selfies and autographs with the performers. Their newfound passion this ancient art is a testament to its evolving relevance.
