4、Every October, my neighborhood has a Halloween costume contest with a different theme. And every October, my neighbor Ollie and I race to the announcement board in the park to find it out. But this year, the theme was kind of, well, theme-less.
"‘Be creative'?" I said, reading the announcement board. "That's not really a theme, is it?"
Ollie hopped off (跳下) his skateboard to get a closer look. "You're right," he agreed.
"Now that's the creative spirit we need for this challenge!" I proposed that we should start by choosing some cool costume - making materials.
Just at that time, Ollie scooped up (捧起) a bunch of fallen leaves and exclaimed he had got a brilliant idea.
Seized by confusion, I asked, "You're going to make an entire costume out of leaves?"
Seemed to be amused by my look, he grinned and scooped up some more. "Why not?" he said, "They' re totally free, and I can guarantee, no one will be a tree as great as me."
Upon hearing that, I added that now that was the creative spirit We need for this challenge! "Aw, come on," I said. "You should be flattered that I like your idea so much. Plus, I just thought of the perfect way to make branches."
Luckily, Ollie said OK. We ended up filling two jumbo bags with different kinds of leaves. Ollie's grandma helped get us set up with tons of excellent costume-making supplies, and we worked forever! At last, when we were finally in the homestretch, I complained. "I'm so tired of gluing leaves."
When we were done, we tried on part of our costumes, and we could tell they really would be fantastic. It took us hours to get ready the next morning, and we probably lost half our leaves shuffling over to the park. Still, when it was time for contestants to line up in the judging area, I felt pretty proud.
However, after a few minutes, I started having another feeling. As I was standing there in the costume, the feeling got worse, and worse, and worse until I was so itchy (痒), I just had to scratch (挠). I started wiggling (摇动;扭动) around uncomfortably.

8、Bathed in two cultures from childhood, moving around the world and experiencing different cultures has always been my thing. When I was in high school, I heard about students in my class wanting to take the SAT test and study abroad in the USA.. Actually, what I wanted to experience most was the European lifestyle and cultural mix.
I used to travel a lot around Europe with my parents as a little kid, and also not forgetting that the French Language is one of my mother tongues, France seemed therefore like a top choice for me. French universities have a good reputation and the French capital is internationally well known for its cultural history.. My university was one of those small cities and I also got the chance to obtain a scholarship which made it easier for me to start my studies.
. Opportunities are offered to develop our network and explore the business world. The university participated as a partner in international networking courses leading to a European Master's degree, a double degree, or training abroad.
. So, if you are an international student who came to France for studies, you can take the chance to explore another country for a term and study in English. I remember wanting to take this opportunity in my first year of my college life and try the program which back then offered students the chance to go on an exchange with Linnaeus University in Sweden..
A. I applied and was lucky to get accepted
B. You can find a lot of student-friendly cities as well
C. Besides, all these universities have their own unique advantages
D. But I was not that attracted to studying there
E. Because there are many universities with good reputation which attracts students
F. The university I chose was small but used to invite business chiefs and directors
G. Plus, all French universities work with several countries to offer an exchange program

9、An IT company from Finland has developed a new font (字体) which uses machine learning to rewrite bad language into kinder words.
More than a third of bullying takes place online, and the numbers are on the rise, according to a report by the United Nations' educational organization UNESCO. TietoEVRY developed the Polite Type font as a new tool to deal with online bullying among kids, pointing out harmful language and causing users to pick kinder words.
As users try to write hurtful English words, the font will automatically replace them.
Writing "I hate you" would, for example, result in the milder "I disagree with you" when Polite Type is used on the computer. Sentences such as "you are ugly" is replaced with "you are not traditionally beautiful" while rude words are blurred completely. The company says it is the first example where a blur has been used as a symbol in a font package. Racial slurs (种族歧视语) are replaced with the racial group the slur is related to, rather than blurring the word entirely.
The vocabulary of the font was co-created with teenagers from Finland. The font's library of words was chosen to include language from different origins, religions, and world views, and will make adjustments as more people and businesses use it. In the future, TietoEVRY suggests that machine learning could be used to teach the font to understand how language is used. Polite Type can be now downloaded and used for free.
"We want bullies to rethink the words they use and the actual meaning behind them," said Kia Haring, global head of communication and sustainability at TietoEVRY. "I hope that our cause acts as a wake-up call for all audiences to consider how bullying could be handled."
(1)、What is special about the Polite Type font according to the text?A、It includes a wider vocabulary. B、It hides all the unusual expressions. C、It consists of words and symbols. D、It prefers long sentences to short ones.(2)、What can we expect of the Polite Type font in the Future?A、It will have more words blurred. B、It will be constantly updated. C、More racial groups will use it. D、Users will be charged with using it.(3)、What does Kia Haring think of creating the Polite Type font?A、Inspiring. B、Unsuccessful. C、appealing. D、Imperfect.(4)、What is the best title for the text?A、A font designed to fight online bullying B、Polite Type: the self-developing font C、Show others kindness by using a new font D、A font automatically avoids racial slurs -
10、Why is the elephant trunk (鼻子) so wrinkly? In a new study in the journal Royal Society Open Science, researchers offer up some answers. This all started when Michael Brecht, a neurobiologist at Humboldt University in Berlin, and his colleagues were studying the brains of African savannah elephants and Asian elephants when they noticed a bump on each of the brain stems the size of a fava bean.
"It's very unusual. It looks very different from all other mammals," Brecht says.
It soon became clear to the researchers that the number of stripes — each one a bundle of nerve fibers — corresponded nearly exactly to the number of wrinkles in the elephant's trunk. This discovery motivated him to take a closer look.
First, Brecht and his team tracked down photographs of elephant fetuses (胎儿) to examine how the trunk develops. "It's an incredibly fast growing body part, more than any other body part," Brecht says. A couple months into development, the fetal trunk has about four wrinkles — at which point there's sudden exponential growth. "Every 20 days, the number of wrinkles doubles," he says.
After a few months, things slow down. "African savannah elephants only add relatively few wrinkles in adulthood," Brecht says. "In Asian elephants, there are noticeably more wrinkles added." Brecht suspects this may be due to differences in how the two groups of elephants use their trunks for grasping. African savannah elephants use the tips of their trunks to pinch objects, pick them up and manipulate them. Asian elephants can do some pinching. "But when you give them a big fruit like a melon or a mango," says Brecht, "they wrap their trunk around the object. So our thinking is that the wrinkles serve for making the trunk flexible."
Brecht also used a micro-CT scanner to look at newborn trunks in detail. He found that the skin is super thin in the troughs of the wrinkles, allowing them essentially to behave like joints. Maëlle Lefeuvre, a behavioral ecology doctoral student at Jagiellonian University in Kraków, thinks there may be engineering lessons to learn from these findings. Lafeuvre says understanding wrinkle formation and function could help inform the construction of a flexible and powerful trunk-like machine or robotic arm, for example.
For Brecht, the findings reinforce how these body parts are exquisitely honed to help giant creatures feed, wherever they may live. "You cannot be such a big animal without being very heavily specialized," he says.
(1)、What did Brecht's study originally focus on?A、Wrinkles on elephants' trunks. B、The brain of two kinds of elephants. C、The brain of mammals. D、Elephant fetuses.(2)、What do we know about Brecht's study of elephant fetuses?A、The increase of the number of wrinkles keeps the same speed. B、The trunk develops slower than other parts in elephant fetuses. C、The number of wrinkles rockets up in the first few months. D、The number of wrinkles doesn't change.(3)、What led to the difference of wrinkles between African savannah elephants and Asian elephants?A、The living environment. B、The food. C、The training. D、The use of the trunks.(4)、What is Lafeuvre's suggestions?A、Use the knowledge acquired from elephants' trunks to engineering. B、Do more studies on the development of elephant fetus's trunks. C、Apply the knowledge from Brecht's study to elephant feeding. D、Track the development of trunks in adult elephants. -
11、My Italian family was loud and noisy. There was a lot of yelling, not a lot of talking and events swirled around me so fast that it made me feel uncomfortable in my own skin. I didn't feel seen. I didn't feel heard. I didn't think anyone wanted to know what I thought or what I needed or gave me tools to deal with how I was feeling.
Then I met someone who changed all that. For an hour every day I would sit as close as I could watch the television show, Mister Rogers' Neighborhood. But it was more than a television show to me. It was a visit with a smart, kind friend who looked directly at me, through the camera. The way he spoke to me, calmly, quietly and slowly, made me feel respected, even though I was just a kid. He talked about things that I was interested in. Also, he talked about tough things, like being angry, and gave me some tools as to what to do, instead of telling me to "just get over it already". Mister Rogers saved me as a kid, but what I didn't realize was how much he helped me as an adult.
As an adult, I can remember back to some of the thoughts, feelings, tools and lessons I learned. I value having people in my real life make me feel special, and who like me just the way I am. I take note of small things every day that bring me happiness. It's the little things that I know now make a big impact.
When I was on a plane recently, a stranger helped me put my luggage in the overhead bin. He looked me in my eyes, smiled and said, "No worries, I got you." That small little phrase is now one of my favorites. I value my husband for wanting to hear about my day and is truly interested in how I feel about it. I have always taken note of these small behaviors and call them my little life clues. They are small but mighty, much like the kids that I now talk to everyday.
Mister Rogers made an impact on me as a child — and an adult — so much so that I now dedicate my life to creating shows for kids that have stories chock full of these little life lessons. But what I realize now about my work is that kids are the containers, but it's the adults that they become that I want to benefit. I want all of us adults to remember the little things and use the life clues to bring them happiness so we can all live our very best lives.
(1)、What can we know about Mister Roger according to the passage?A、He is a real person near my family. B、He is the host of a television show. C、He only talked about interesting things with me. D、He treated me just like a kid.(2)、Why did Mister Roger make a big impact on "me"?A、He kept communicating with me all the time. B、He taught me a lot of truths in a serious manner. C、He has the same family background with me. D、He treated me with respect and brought great happiness.(3)、Why does the writer mention those examples in paragraph 4?A、To prove an idea. B、To present a phenomenon. C、To give some details. D、To lead in some arguments.(4)、What is the purpose of the passage?A、To tell a story how the writer changed her attitude towards life. B、To appeal to adults to spread daily and tiny happiness to the children. C、To share her poor and miserable life as a child. D、To introduce an inspiring and interesting television show. -

13、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Mom drank stories with her morning coffee, a warm soup of words mixed with paragraphs, commas (逗号), and periods. They came in various flavors and were all appetizing. Whenever I attempted to read aloud like Mom, however, no words dared to climb out. My world was silent, without a voice to call my own.
That silence invited jeers (嘲笑), tears, and many heartbreaks. I couldn't remember how many times I had switched schools and how many times I had run home crying, signing desperately to Mom, "I'm done with school." My fingers were the voice I couldn't find and the only way I could cry out. Everything changed, however, when I met Ms. Park.
It was a lovely day. Mom drove me to my new school and I felt calm until the car stopped in front of a large white building. The moment I got off, Ms. Park, my new English teacher, came up. "Nice to meet you," she signed. How could she know sign language! I signed back while pretending to be distracted by the posters on the walls. "Interested in our writing contest?" she asked. I looked up, noticing the huge black-and-white words on one poster. "Try it! Just hand in a story to me next week," Ms. Park smiled. The thought of entering fascinated me. It was my chance to speak without actually speaking.
At home, I sat with a blank sheet of paper in front of me. Closing my eyes, I heard Mom's honey-like stories, so tasty that anyone who listened begged for more. She always told me that satisfying stories came from the heart. Then, I had it. What story could be closer to my heart than my own? So after a week of intense writing, I let my story flow through my pen and drip onto the paper and handed it to Ms. Park.
Then, one day, when walking through a crowded hall, I saw Ms. Park signing from afar, "You've made the cut (入选)!" Her dancing fingers were too good to be true and I began waiting for the day of the upcoming awards ceremony.

17、Body Language in the Virtual World
As social beings, we naturally interpret body language as an expression of mood or intention in real life. Here are four body language considerations that will result in your bigger digital impact in video calls.
Make a positive and lasting impression. The way you hold yourself affects how others perceive you. Similarly, slumping on the sofa conveys unwillingness to take the task seriously. Maintaining a proper posture by sitting up straight is the key to making a positive impression from the beginning.
In video calls, you need to be aware that less is more. Too many hand movements can be distracting in a small screen — people need time to take in what they are hearing. And when you are listening to others, glancing at your palms and drumming your fingers could also indicate to others that you are either bored or frustrated.
Guard against "resting bored face" syndrome (综合征). Our facial expressions are visible on screen, so demonstrating an objective response to whatever you see and hear is a must-have. But communicating that you are mindful at all times is challenging during a video meeting when "resting bored face" syndrome can set in — a facial expression that others register as boredom.
Be present and active — don't multitask. Don't check your email or tackle other work tasks when you join a video call. While you may be confident that you can successfully do two or more things at once, and not lose track of what's being discussed, the non-verbal clues you are sending other participants will say otherwise.
A. Master the art of employing gestures.
B. Use fewer hand movements to avoid conflicts.
C. Even if you are silent, others can see what you are up to.
D. For instance, crossed arms can imply defensiveness or annoyance.
E. This also applies to our virtual workplace with common video calls.
F. To avoid this, remember to nod, smile and lean forward occasionally.
G. Therefore, it's effective to straighten up to leave a positive impression.

18、At the crack of dawn in California's Central Valley, birds sing their morning songs and some of them dive down from the branches of a tree that has stood its ground for centuries. A few feet above the tree's base is a white ring, indicating how high the San Joaquin River once rose. Dos Rios is supposed to flood — it's a floodplain, recently transformed into California's newest state park.
Just 15 years ago, this area looked quite different. In the summer months, the River flowed lazily around the edges of this park, but in the spring, when snow melted, the river took on a forceful character, sweeping through this land, which caused damage to crops and homes nearby.
Therefore, in 2008, Rentner, president of the nonprofit organization River Partners, began the process of buying the land from a farming family. Since then, her team has been transforming the land into what it naturally was. Reengineering involves cutting holes into levees (防洪堤) to release floodwaters, sparing nearby communities. The solution is designed to work with nature instead of against it, making Dos Rios a new place for people to enjoy nature.
For indigenous (土著的) people who were forced to leave their homes, this new park also means a lot. With the construction of a 3-acre Native Use Garden, indigenous people plan to plant native plants that would be beneficial not only to the habitat, but also for indigenous herbs and cultural practices.
Now, the land, just like a time machine, looks more like it did hundreds of years ago, before farms and towns cropped up. Though holding great promise, the 2. 5-square-mile area is a small part of a vast agricultural region, and even restoring (修复) that much land has been no easy task. However, Rentner is optimistic, "We are thinking about doing 10 more Dos Rioses just in the next decade. Maybe more."
(1)、What was Dos Rios like before becoming a state park?A、A plain threatened by floods. B、A valley covered with trees. C、A natural reserve rich in water. D、A city park famous for birds.(2)、What is the working principle of River Partners?A、Boosting the yields in the local fields. B、Making the most of natural resources. C、Putting the safety of local communities first. D、Operating in harmony with the natural world.(3)、What is a consequence of the restoration of Dos Rios according to the text?A、Introduction of foreign plant species. B、Loss of indigenous cultural practices. C、Increased efforts in restoration projects. D、Further damage to the local environment.(4)、Which can be a suitable title for the text?A、Dos Rios in California: A Secret Wonderland B、California's Newest State Park: A Time Machine C、Indigenous People in Central Valley: A Living Legend D、Nonprofit Organization River Partners: A Green Pioneer -
19、Who among us hasn't weighed up the value of attending an event that required a long commute (通勤), or found themselves in a bad mood due to being stuck in traffic? But while it's obvious that some activities will bring us joy and others only frustration, translating this understanding into data that can help guide policy decisions has historically proved difficult.
It's what Dr. Christian Krekel and Dr. George MacKerron have been exploring. They propose a new method for estimating the Value of Time (VOT) and calculate (计算), for the first time, VOTs for a wide range of common activities such as walking, commuting and socialising. Through an app called Mappiness, they can ask people about their happiness randomly throughout the day and record how they are actually feeling in that moment while doing something or being somewhere. With data from over 30,000 people around the UK, the researchers were able to identify how people felt when carrying out 42 daily activities and calculate a monetary (货币的) value for each activity.
Interestingly, "waiting or queuing" was found to have a strong and significant negative impact on happiness, ranking as the third least enjoyable activity. The VOT shows that spending 60 minutes waiting is found to be worth £12.20 per hour; commuting £8.40 per hour; and waiting during commuting, a huge £17.20 per hour. These high costs suggest that respondents would be better off spending their time doing something else. Or, as Dr. Krekel says, "Someone who is waiting for 60 minutes would need to be paid £12.20 to achieve the same level of happiness if they were not waiting."
This new method of calculating VOT allows researchers to measure the benefits of funding time-saving facilities, helping policymakers to make informed decisions over where best to spend money. By showing how impactful waiting and commuting are on the population, the research makes a strong case for funding projects that would reduce the time people spend doing these activities and promote the wellbeing of all who stand to benefit.

20、As a boy, I watched spacecraft launches, and when looking up at all the stars in the night sky, I wondered whether I could go to space. I wish I could tell that boy that his dreams would come true and that he would grow up to pilot spaceships.
When I first arrived in space, I travelled eight and a half minutes on an extremely wild ride on a rocket ship. However,it was short enough that it was more like driving a car at maximum performance on a very rough (颠簸的) road. As soon as I got to weightlessness my body was in a completely different environment, which brought about throwing-up and exhaustion. Travel sickness medicine helped my body adapt toit.
It's extremely mind-expanding to get the true reality of our world from space, from glancing at the entire length of the Himalayas to seeing the wildfires of Australia. And perhaps the most impactful is to see something rare. One dawn, I looked down the world with my camera trying to steal every moment I could. It was just the right angle between the sun behind the horizon and the right rare collection of ice crystals(冰晶), high in the atmosphere. There was an unearthly light, almost like a surreal rainbow. I felt like the world had just shown me a secret.
One night, I saw a shooting star, an enormous, random (随机的) rock from the universe trapped by the Earth's gravity. You can't help but think that rock just went by us. It did make my blood run cold when I thought it could have just as easily come through our spaceship and made a significant hole, which probably would have killed all of us. I know how to repair holes in the ship, but if the chance event is large enough, you're dead. It is dangerous, risk-filled, but fascinatingly beautiful and rewarding.
