  • 1、My backpack weighed 53 pounds, filled with dried food, water, and necessities for my first long-distance hike on Canada's 180-kilometre Sunshine Coast Trail. The journey to the trailhead (登山口) was an adventure in itself — riding my motorcycle in the rain, taking buses, and finally a rubber boat to Sarah Point. As I set off, I felt a mix of excitement and fear. Backcountry trips weren't new to me, but 15 days alone in the wilderness was a different beast.

I was fascinated with all the trail had to offer. Some parts were wide and flat, while others were narrow, steep, and even overgrown. Each night, I stayed in a different hut, living a unique life each day. At Bliss Portage Hut, I found peace on a hidden bench overlooking a forest. Sitting there, I realized how rare it is to have the forest completely to oneself.

Hiking develops a unique friendship. Along the way, I kept hearing about Pierre, a cheerful Frenchman with long, curly hair. When we finally met on Tin Hat Mountain, it felt like reuniting with an old friend. We laughed about how the trail had connected us before we even crossed paths. It struck me how such journeys remove pretences (做作), leaving only human connection.

Why do people hike? Is it for the views, the loneliness, or the challenge? For me, it was about independence and adventure, a chance to experience real life. The trail became a pilgrimage (朝圣之旅), reconnecting me with the world and myself. Each step reminded me of our smallness in the universe yet our great feelings.

Upon completion, I found my motorcycle, feeling a bittersweet mix of achievement and loss. Returning to city life felt dreamlike, as if the past 15 days had been a dream. The trail had changed me, teaching me to appreciate simpleness and freedom, lessons I'd carry long after the hike ended. Life on the trail was a reminder of what truly matters.

  • 2、Reading is like exercise for the mind. It helps us think or escape into new worlds. Today, we asked the Happiful Team to introduce a book of their favourites. We hope our efforts will inspire you to take a break from screens, relax on the sofa with a cup of tea, and enjoy a good book.

    Jo Ferguson, Head of Membership:

I would probably choose Prisoners of Geography by Tim Marshall. It's a highly accessible and interesting read that examines how geography has influenced — and continues to significantly influence — politics across the world.

Bonnie Evie Gifford, Creative Writer and Producer:

I recommend Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell. If you've ever had that awkward, nerdy (书呆子气的) university experience where you just couldn't fit in, where you disagreed with a professor, or found yourself being taken advantage of by your mates, Fangirl will totally speak to you.

    Kat Wheeler, Editorial Assistant:

There are so many books that I love and that have changed my life in all kinds of ways. But I think Animal Farm by George Orwell is a must, mainly because it's so accessible but so important. It tells a fable story in which the animals overthrow the farmer and establish a perfect homeland, but fall into degeneration (堕落) at last.

    Kate Nicholls, Content Producer:

The latest book to blow me away has to be Eat up by Ruby Tandoh. Food and eating play such an important role in our lives and affects so many things, from body image to class. Putting together facts and statistics (数据) with personal articles and several recipes (食谱), I'm really fond of Ruby's writing style and always want more.

(2)、Which book focuses on self-discovery and finding personal identity?
    A、Prisoners of Geography. B、Fangirl. C、Animal Farm. D、Eat up.
(3)、Why does Kat Nicholls like Eat Up?

  • 3、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Gideon and his mother were visiting the supermarket for their weekly shopping when he found a leather wallet. He picked it up curiously and found there was a coffee bean pattern on the surface, which reminded him of his own experience working part-time at a coffee shop during college.

Besides that, he found a significant amount of cash and a business card with a phone number on it. Gideon had tolerated a poor life along with his mother. Each meal was the result of his mother's hard work. Gideon had been struggling with unemployment while actively searching for a job.

"Should I keep the wallet?" he wondered, the thought of financial relief crossing his mind. "I could surely use the money." Yet, a wave of guilt washed over him. "But Mother would be annoyed if she knew," he thought, holding the wallet tightly. Noticing his hesitation, Gideon's mother asked what was wrong. He told her about the wallet and his internal struggle. With a gentle but firm voice, she reminded him of the values, "We don't keep what isn't ours, Gideon."

Gideon's face turned red with a mix of emotions. "We have bills without steady income, and this could be a turning point," he responded. His mother acknowledged their difficulties but encouraged him to think about the right thing to do, saying, "Returning it could bring you unexpected good luck."

Finally, with resolve, Gideon decided to call the number on the business card. The owner was an elderly man who was very grateful when he met them to take the wallet back. He explained that the money inside was prepared for his son Andrew, which was crucial for his new business — a coffee shop he was planning to open. As Gideon walked away, he felt a sense of fulfillment(成就感) from doing the right thing, but he continued to worry about his own job search and financial situation.

  • 7、There is no question that self-acceptance is critical to an individual's happiness. As a mother, I want my kids to strive (努力) to deliver their very best, but at the same time, I want them to be able to accept their limitations. Today, I'll share several self-acceptance exercises for children, which require your assistance.

Remember self-acceptance is a long and ongoing journey even with these exercises.

The first exercise is discovering strengths. Children should be exposed to a variety of new things and creative activities so they can discover their strengths and interests. Bring them to the library to research their new interests. Help them to understand that not everyone has the same strengths and that it is okay.

Take time to have conversations with your child about what they want to talk about. Even if you don't take any interest in their favorite cartoon or stamp collecting, when they share it with you, allow them to talk. Your listening will help them know they are valuable and that you respect them.

Allow change. Your child may express things they don't like about themselves; that's okay. We all have things about ourselves that we don't like and want to change. Talk to your child about this. Then support their efforts in making a change. Help them understand that improving takes work and that it is a choice we get to make.

My grandmother used to tell me to just try my best. I pass this same message on to my kids but with a reminder: After all, life is all about balance. Children have to be able to strive for excellence and be content with themselves even if they don't meet their own high standards. Tell them they can always try again, if they want to.

    A. Notice what they like.

    B. Engage in open communication.

    C. Try your best and then just be satisfied.

    D. Be patient with your child in this process.

    E. Focus on the positive aspects of your child.

    F. Help them realize that wanting to share is normal.

    G. Encourage them to find ways to better themselves.

  • 8、Roughly 42% of Americans are nearsighted today, compared to 25% in 1971. The World Health Organization predicts that about half of the world's population will have nearsightedness by 2050. It's apparent that our eyesight is becoming increasingly poor, but researchers are only now beginning to understand why.

Generally a childhood phenomenon, nearsightedness happens when the eyeball grows too long from front to back, taking on more of an oval (椭圆形) shape rather than a sphere (球形). Eyes have a "stop signal" so that they grow corresponding with the head, explains Gregory Schwartz, an associate professor at Northwestern University. However, that signal can be interrupted by genetic and environmental factors, which leads to our eyeballs growing a bit too much, leading to far-off objects looking out of focus. Signs you might have nearsightedness also include headaches, as well as eye stress and tiredness when doing certain activities such as driving or playing sports.

The increased use of screens, most of which are high contrast, like black text on a white page, or light text on a dark background, overstimulating our eyes, causing more eye growth in children and less time spent outdoors are to blame. A 2017 study published in JAMA Ophthalmology found a connection between increased natural light exposure and a decrease in nearsightedness, particularly in children and young adults. Exposure to natural light stimulates dopamine, a chemical which helps regulate normal growth and development of the eyeball. Indoor lighting doesn't do the trick.

Most people's vision will stabilize in their teens, but some people develop nearsightedness later in life, typically between ages 20 and 40. Poor eyesight isn't the only downside; people with nearsightedness are at a higher risk of developing eye issues as they age. That's why regular eye exercise is crucial.

(1)、What is the function of the figures in paragraph 1?
A、To draw the attention of WHO. B、To introduce the research methods. C、To explain the causes of nearsightedness. D、To illustrate the seriousness of nearsightedness.
(2)、What happens to the eyeballs of nearsighted children?
A、They are out of shape. B、They grow into a sphere. C、They match the growth of heads. D、They distinguish far-off objects easily.
(3)、What is the main idea of paragraph 3?
A、The overuse of screens. B、The causes of nearsightedness. C、The benefits of protecting eyes. D、The influence of exposure to light.
(4)、What might the author continue talking about?
A、Eye issues of ageing. B、The ways to exercise eyes. C、Key factors to affect eyesight. D、The downside of nearsightedness.
  • 9、About six years ago I was eating lunch in a restaurant in New York City when a woman and a young boy sat down at the next table. I couldn't help overhearing parts of their conversation. At one point the woman asked, "So, how have you been?" And the boy — who could not have been more than 7 or 8 years old —replied, "Frankly, I've been feeling a little depressed lately."

This incident(小事件) stuck in my mind because it confirmed(证实) my growing belief that children are changing. As far as I can remember, my friends and I didn't find out we were "depressed" until we were in high school.

The evidence of a change in children has increased steadily in recent years. Children don't seem childlike anymore. Children speak more like adults, dress more like adults and behave more like adults than they used to. Whether this is good or bad is difficult to say, but it is certainly different. Children as they once were on longer exists. Why?

Human development is based not only on innate biological states, but also on patterns of access to social knowledge. Movement from one social route to another usually involves learning the secrets of the new status. Children have always been taught adult secrets, but slowly and in stages: traditionally, we tell sixth graders things we keep hidden from fifth graders.

In the last 30 years, however, a secret-revelation (揭示)machine has been installed in 98 percent of American homes. It is called television. Television passes information indiscriminately to all viewers alike, be they children or adults. Unable to resist the temptation, many children turn their attention from printed texts to the less challenging, more vivid moving pictures.

Communication through print, as a matter of fact, allows for a great deal of control over the social information to which children have access. Reading and writing involve a complex code of symbols that must be memorized and practiced. Children must read simple books before they can read complex materials.

(1)、According to the author, feeling depressed is ________.
A、a sure sign of a mental problem in children B、a mental state present in all humans, including children C、something that can't be avoided in children's mental development D、something hardly to be expected in a young child
(2)、Traditionally, a child is supposed to learn about the adult world _________.
A、through connection with society B、gradually and under guidance(引导) C、naturally without being taught D、through watching television
(3)、According to the author, that today's children seem adultlike results from __________.
A、the widespread influence of television B、the poor arrangement of teaching content C、the fast pace of human scientific development D、the rising standard of living
(4)、What does the author think of communication through print for children?
A、It enables children to gain more social information B、It develops children's interest in reading and writing. C、It helps children to read and write well. D、It can control what children are to learn.
(5)、What does the author think of the change in today's children?
A、He feels their adultlike behavior is so funny B、He thinks the change worth our attention C、He considers it a rapid development D、He is extremely upset about it
  • 10、For many years, Bruce Bexler dreamed of going where no human had gone before. He wanted to cut a path through unexplored lands and discover rare, exotic species.

That might sound like an impossible dream, but Bexler turned it into a reality.

In December 2015, he and a team of Australian and American scientists ventured into an isolated tropical rain forest on the island of New Guinea. They were the first people ever to enter the mist-covered region. "As time was limited, we were dropped in by helicopter. Once we were on the ground, there were no trails anywhere; it was really hard to get around, " Bexler says.

Within minutes of landing, the team spotted a black chicken-like bird with strange orange skin hanging from its neck. The scientists soon determined that the unusual creature was a type of honeyeaters — the first new bird species to be sighted on New Guinea in 60 years.

The honeyeater wasn't the only surprise for the scientists. They discovered more than 40 previously unknown plant and animal species — 13 birds of paradise, 20 frogs, four butterflies, and five palms. "We were like kids in a candy store," Bexler recalls. "Everywhere we looked, we saw amazing things we had never seen before."

The newfound species didn't shy away from the scientists. Two long-nosed echidnas — primitive egg-laying mammals — let the visitors pick them up and take them back to camp to study them. An echidna looks like a hedgehog and is also called a spiny anteater.

Bexler thinks the animals weren't scared because they had never seen humans before. "In almost all parts of New Guinea, animals are hunted for food, and because of this, they are very cautious of people," he explains. "This area gives scientists a place where they can go to study the behaviours of animals that have not yet learned to be afraid of people. "

Scientists believe the area is probably the largest untouched forest in Asia. Local people called Kwerba hunt and collect plants from the outer-edges of the forest but told Bexler that not even their ancestors had gone so far into the woods. The wooded area is approximately a 10-day walk from the nearest village.

Bexler and his team did not have enough time during the expedition to study the area completely. They hope to return and expect to record many more undiscovered species. "We just scratched the surface," Bexler says. "Anyone who goes there will come back with a mystery."

(1)、Which word can best describe Bruce Bexler?
    A、Adventurous. B、Cautious. C、Optimistic. D、Careful.
(2)、What does Bruce Bexler mean by saying "We were like kids in a candy store"?
A、They didn't have enough food and were hungry. B、They were very excited about what they saw. C、They were misbehaving like naughty children. D、They knew that if they kept searching, they'd find sugar in the forest.
(3)、What can we conclude about the area Bruce Bexler explored?
A、The best way to explore the area is by helicopter. B、The locals live in the centre of the forest. C、The area still contains many plants and animals unknown to science. D、The locals are unwilling to allow the scientists to enter the deep woods.
