Louise Bourgeois: Has the Day Invaded the Night or Has the Night Invaded the Day?

Day and night, love and rage, calm and chaos. Enter a world of emotional extremes in this exhibition of the art of Louise Bourgeois, one of the most influential artists of the past century. Born in Paris in 1911 and living and working in New York until her death in 2010, Bourgeois is well-known for her fearless exploration of human relationships across a seven-decade career. 

Louise Bourgeois: Has the Day Invaded the Night or Has the Night Invaded the Day? reveals the extraordinary reach and intensity of Bourgeois'  art, from unforgettable sculptures of the 1940s to her tough yet tender weaving works of the 1990s and 2000s. It also reveals the psychological tensions that powered her search, through a dramatic presentation in two contrasting exhibition spaces. Moving from the well-lit rooms of " Day"  to the darkened area of " Night" , viewers will encounter more than 120 works, including many never seen before in Australia. 

Tickets can be booked online via the exhibition or event page on our website, or in person at the welcome desk at the Art Gallery. Tickets cannot be exchanged, but if something unexpected happens that prevents you from attending, you can change the date of your reservation in your confirmation email.

UN Chinese Language Day is observed annually on April 20, celebrating the language' s contribution to the world and  (encourage) more people to learn it. 

April 20 marks the Guyu, Grain Rain in Chinese. The Guyu is the  (six) of the 24 solar terms in the traditional lunar calendar, the day when farmers start sowing. Each year they will celebrate Guyu in memory of the person: Cang Jie,  was believed to create Chinese characters. 

Chinese  (allow) to be an official language of the United Nations in 1946. However, in the early years, Chinese was not  (common) used in the work of the United Nations. The situation improved  the restoration (恢复) of the lawful rights of the PRC in the United Nations in 1971. And in 1973, the General Assembly (联合国大会) included Chinese as  working language. Then more and more UN offices and work members work with the Chinese language. 

This year' s celebrations included lectures on Chinese culture, film screenings, panel discussions on education and art  (exhibition). The event also provided an opportunity  (practise) Chinese calligraphy, draw in the Chinese style, and play classical Chinese musical instruments. 

Today, more and more diplomats and UN staff  (learn) Chinese and familiarizing themselves with the Chinese culture. 

I had suddenly run out of oil paints just when I needed them. So I made a long 1  to the only store around here that sells them. It was the 2  time to shop. The store was full of people and the checkout line was long. I could see the 3  faces of ton the face of the people around me. It was no better in the 4  and I found myself in the middle of a longline of cars waiting to pull out of it. 

As my car was moving forward, I 5  a middle-aged, thin black woman in an old coat. She was holding up a piece of paper that said, " 6  my job. Kids to feed!" I 7  as car after car drove past her while their drivers turned their eyes away. 8  I came closer, I took out my 9  and pulled out the little cash I had left. I 10  next to her, rolled down(摇下) my window, and 11  put it in her hand. She 12  and said " Thank you" before the car behind me 13  me to drive on. 

I drove away and 14  that I had helped her even a little. Was my small act of kindness 15  to her? I don't know. Did it change the attitude of the driver behind me? Probably not. But it has been a wonderful experience for me. 

How to listen in English exams

Listening is an important but difficult part for middle school students in English exams. The following suggestions may benefit you a lot. 

Relax yourself.

Before listening, it' s necessary to have a peaceful state of mind.  If that doesn' t work, drinking some water or washing your face with cold water may help you to some extent. 

As soon as the listening starts, focus on it without thinking about anything else. While listening, you can also recall the related knowledge in common with the material concerned, such as the vocabulary about the subject or topic, which is beneficial to your better understanding. 

Grasp the main idea.

Sometimes the monologue, dialogue or conversation you' re listening to is a little bit longer than you expect. And it' s normal that some unnecessary information is included. However, you don' t need to understand it completely.  

Ignore the new words.

Without doubt, there usually exist unfamiliar words in listening materials. In fact, it' s almost impossible for you to know or understand all the words in the listening material sometimes.  It' s mistaken to waste much time on figuring them out while listening. 

Develop the habit of taking notes.

In the course of listening, it' s a good habit to write down the content and leave out the unimportant details.   By taking notes, we can remind ourselves of the key points. 

A. Concentrate on listening. 

B. The more words you memorize, the better it is. 

C. Feeling nervous or worried is harmful and unnecessary. 

D. What you need to do is turn a deaf ear to the new words. 

E. Make a list of what you think is important while listening. 

F. Instead, just pay attention to the key points and general ideas. 

G. If you feel nervous or anxious, try taking a deep breath to calm yourself down. 

By now, most people know they should be eating more vegetables. But are there ways to get more from the vegetables you already eat? A research shows that when it comes to vegetables, it' s not only how much we eat, but also how we prepare them, that decides the vitamins and other nutrients that enter our body. 

Many studies show that people who eat lots of vegetables have less heart disease, and eye problems and even cancer. But raw vegetables are not always best. The researchers found that 198 Germans who eat raw food were short of lycopene, the matter found in tomatoes and other red vegetables. " There is an idea that raw foods are always going to be better," says Steven K. Clinton, a professor at Ohi o State University. " For fruits and vegetables, sometimes a little bit of cooking can be helpful. " 

A number of factors decide how the vegetables do good to people' s health before they reach the table, including where and how they were grown and stored before being bought. No single cooking way is best. Some nutrients are easily lost in cooking if they are cooked in different ways. 

Vitamins C and B are often lost. In January, another report said that boiling was better for carrots than frying or serving them raw. Frying was the worst way to cook. 

What cooked with the vegetables can also be important? When the vegetables were cooked with fat, the diners can get more nutrients. Fat can also make the taste of vegetables better, meaning that people will eat more of them. Putting on some other things that make it taste better—a little salt—can make the food taste better. 

Many years ago, my dad was facing a serious heart condition. He was unable to do a steady job. He fell suddenly ill and had to be admitted to the hospital. 

He wanted to do something to keep himself busy, so he decided to volunteer at the local children' s hospital. My dad loved kids. It was the perfect job for him. He ended up working with the seriously ill children. He would talk, play, and do arts with them. 

One of his kids was a girl with a rare disease that paralyzed (瘫痪) her from the neck down. She couldn' t do anything, and she was very depressed. My dad decided to try to help her. He started visiting her in her room, bringing paints, brushes and paper. He stood the paper up, put the paintbrush in his mouth and began to paint. He didn' t use his hands at all. All the while he would tell her, " See, you can do anything you set your mind to. " At the end of the day, she began to paint using her mouth, and she and my dad became friends. Soon after, the little girl was sent home because the doctors felt there was nothing else they could do for her. My dad also left the children' s hospital for a little while because he became ill. Some time later after my dad had recovered and returned to work, in came the little girl who had been paralyzed and only this time she was walking. She ran straight over to my dad and hugged him really tight. She gave him a picture she had done using her hands. At the bottom it read: " Thank you for helping me walk. " 

My dad would cry every time he told us this story and so would we. He would say sometimes love is more powerful than doctor, and my dad—who died just a few months after the little girl gave the picture—loved every single child in that hospital. 

Explore Central Park, one of the largest city parks in the world and one of the most famous symbols of New York. Let' s have a look at its main sights. 

Central Park is New York' s largest city park and one of the biggest in the world, with an area of 843 acres. This park is home to man-made lakes, waterfalls, grass and wooded areas. You will also find the Central Park Zoo, among other attractions in this green space of New York. 

Besides being the city' s primary green lungs, Central Park is also a favorite spot for many New Yorkers. It is perfect for sunbathing, going for walks, or doing outdoor sports. Something that we found curious is seeing so many people running with their babies in prams (婴儿车). 

On Foot or By Bicycle

To get to know some of the wildest parts of Central Park, we suggest walking. However, to get a general feel for the whole park, the best thing to do is to hire a bicycle and enjoy the scenery. 

If you decide to hire a bike, you will find lots of bike rental stores around Central Park that are not very expensive.

From 7 a. m. to 10 p. m. on weekends. From 6 a. m. to 8:30 p. m. on weekdays. 

Price

Entry to the Park is free. But if you visit some parks like Central Park Zoo, you need to buy a ticket.

Subway: Line 5, 6, 7, A, B, C and D. Bus: Line M1, M2, M3, M4 and M10. 

I was never a fast runner and thus I always didn' t like running. Throughout my childhood, whenever we competed in the 50-meter run, the 400-meter, or any other type of race, I would finish in the bottom half. In my late teens, as a member of a baseball team, I was the slowest runner on the team. In the preseason training, I was always the one running by myself at the end. 

Therefore, twenty years later, when I entered my first official running race — a 3, 000-meter challenge in my city — at age 38, I certainly didn' t expect to win or come close to winning. 

I was there because my college friend Jim Hosek was the director of the race, and he asked me to run. The race was aimed at raising money for the unfortunate patients in a hospital and encouraging the patients and their families to be brave, determined, and confident with sportsmanship. 

It was a heartwarming program. I wanted to support it, so I showed up, paid the entrance fee, had a number pinned (把……别住) on my back, and moved over to the starting line. There, I waited with about 300 other runners for the race to begin. I was nervous. Would I be the last one to finish a race again? Could I even finish the race? I wondered. 

Before long, someone spoke into a microphone, " Anyone weighing over 200 pounds comes down to the scale (秤), please. " Knowing I was over 200 pounds, I walked down to the scale. A man told me to stand on it. " Two hundred and three pounds, " he said. Then he wrote down the race number that was on my back. Out of curiosity, I asked him why he did so, and then I was told there would be an award ceremony (仪式) after the race. One award was for the first finisher in the over 200-pound group, and this special award would be announced at the end of the ceremony. 

Not expecting the award, I ran towards the starting line, never realizing there were only two runners weighing over 200 pounds.
