  • 5、Sometimes we only appreciate something when we realize we may lose it. That is the story of Greenwood Park. Once a vibrant green space in the heart of a bustling city, Greenwood Park had been neglected for decades. In its prime, it spanned over 100 acres and was a haven for city dwellers, with lush gardens, serene ponds, and a variety of recreational facilities. But as the city grew and modernized, the park was gradually forgotten.

By the late 1900s, the city's expanding urban development encroached on the park's boundaries. New buildings and roads were constructed, and the park's once-pristine landscapes were marred by pollution and neglect. The park's historic structures fell into disrepair, and its natural habitats were destroyed. The number of visitors dwindled, and the park became a symbol of urban decay.

However, a group of local residents and environmentalists recognized the park's potential and began advocating for its revival. They organized community events and fundraisers to draw attention to the park's plight. Their efforts paid off when the city government allocated funds for the park's restoration.

Today, Greenwood Park has been transformed into a modern urban oasis. The park now features beautifully landscaped gardens, walking trails, and playgrounds. It has become a popular destination for families, joggers, and nature enthusiasts. The park's revival is a testament to the power of community engagement and the importance of preserving green spaces in urban environments. • 6、There exists a melody within your cranial cavity. You are persistently subjected to its auditory recurrence. You are incapable of ceasing its playback, and it is inducing a state of mental agitation in you! Has this particular scenario transpired in your experience? Perhaps you have been afflicted by an earworm, which constitutes a retained impression of a musical composition.

Earworms are a prevalent phenomenon. A research undertaking demonstrated that 90 percent of the populace undergo this experience. The underlying reason for the occurrence of earworms is a matter of inquiry. According to the esteemed neurologist Oliver Sacks, musical auditory stimuli impact us irrespective of whether we direct our conscious attention towards it or not. We are constantly enveloped by music in the course of our quotidian existence. Sacks hypothesizes whether there is an augmented frequency of earworm occurrences in the contemporary era, attributable to the pervasive presence of music in our environmental surroundings.

Investigational work concerning the primary auditory cortex lends credence to Sacks' theoretical propositions. The auditory cortex is the cerebral region responsible for the processing of sound stimuli. It functions as a transient storage mechanism for limited quantities of auditory information. Some of this auditory data is consigned to oblivion, while other portions are conserved into the long-term memory repository. However, musical pieces appear to linger in the auditory cortex for an extended duration.

James Kellaris, a distinguished professor of marketing at the University of Cincinnati, posits that only specific categories of musical compositions are prone to becoming earworms. These musical pieces are characterized by their repetitious nature, simplicity, and incongruity — an unforeseen element such as an irregular rhythmic pattern. Your cerebrum devotes a significant degree of attention to a musical piece of this nature, Kellaris asserts. Due to its repetitive and unconventional attributes, it remains lodged in the auditory cortex for a more protracted period. At that juncture, Kellaris is of the opinion that it metamorphoses into an irritating earworm.

Advertisers frequently employ jingles — brief musical compositions designed for facile memorization — as a promotional strategy to boost sales. Advertisers harbor the desire for these jingles to become firmly entrenched in the minds of consumers, thereby perpetuating thoughts about their merchandise. It appears that advertisers have assimilated the insights that Kellaris has unearthed through his systematic research.

Is there a viable method to eradicate an earworm? Here are some recommendations that Kellaris has assembled: supplant the earworm-like song with an alternative musical selection, endeavor to divert your attention by engaging in an intensive activity such as physical exertion, or disclose the existence of your earworm to another individual. What if these strategic approaches prove to be ineffective? In that eventuality, you might consider reclining and attempting to savor the musical auditory experience within your own mind!

(1)、How does the author lead to the topic?
    A、By giving a definition. B、By clarifying a question. C、By drawing a conclusion. D、By describing a phenomenon.
(2)、What might contribute to the higher incidence of earworms today?
A、People having better memories. B、The decrease in the quality of music. C、The large amount of music around us. D、People listening to music more carefully.
(3)、Why does the author mention auditory cortex?
A、To explain the workings of earworms. B、To prove the significance of music. C、To emphasize the necessity of the research. D、To introduce the effect of memory.
(4)、What can be inferred from the text?
A、Earworms come and go in a flash. B、Jingles have nothing to do with earworms. C、Earworms are welcomed by music lovers. D、Enjoying the earworms might be the last choice.
  • 7、"Can I have that banana? I'm still hungry," said a sixth-grade student staring at a bin full of unopened bananas, apples, milk, and a couple of unopened, plastic-wrapped sandwiches at a public middle school in Fayetteville, Arkansas recently.

These unopened items are the result of a student food waste examination conducted in partnership with the school's Green Team, the University of Arkansas, and the World Wildlife Fund. Some trays (托盘) have been picked clean, some picked over, and others hold untouched, unopened foods. And, while some students are totally full, others remain hungry.

Connecting the dots between these two kinds of students is the idea of a "share table", a way to address both student hunger and food waste in school meal programs during the school year and summer. Share tables are exactly what they sound like: places to drop off things like packages of carrots, bananas, or apples, or unopened cartons (盒) of milk for other students to pick up free of charge.

With the USDA's encouragement, a growing number of school lunch programs across the country are now offering share tables. There are a number of benefits — economic, environmental, and public health — for supporting share tables. Share tables enable us to use the federal tax dollars we invest in feeding 31 million kids each day for their highest and greatest good. When students offer their unopened, unconsumed foods to other students, they expand the impact of our investment in their food security. Share tables also promote the morality of food conservation and respect for the impacts of food waste. And decomposing food in landfills creates and gives off powerful greenhouse gases. Habituating children to share their uneaten food is also a public health "push" that can influence dietary choices at home and the behavior patterns they will carry into adulthood.

Fayetteville sixth-grade science teacher Brandy Pledger said her students love the school's share tables. "What they don't take, we teachers take back to our classroom or departmental refrigerators to share with students in the afternoons and/ or in after-school programs."

(1)、Why does the author mention the unopened food?
A、To highlight the need to improve school meals. B、To show the problem of hunger in schools. C、To stress the importance of food security. D、To illustrate school food waste issues.
(2)、What can students do at share tables?
A、Get free unopened food. B、Sell their uneaten food. C、Exchange food with others. D、Throw away their waste food.
(3)、What do we know about share tables from the text?
A、They are opposed by many teachers. B、They are not well supported by schools. C、They have a positive impact on multiple aspects. D、They mainly focus on solving food waste problems.
(4)、Where is this text probably taken from?
A、A scientific research report. B、A school brochure. C、An educational magazine. D、A food industry newsletter.

At 7:30 a. m. on Christmas Eve, Ivy White got a call from an unknown number. "Hi. You don't know me, but I have your brother." It was Sha' Kyra Aughtry, a Buffalo resident who had rescued Ivy's brother, Joey White, amid the deadly winter storm.

Joey, then 64, was mentally disabled. Before the storm hit the city, Ivy called Joey and instructed him not to leave his group home where he lives. But as Buffalo's worst blizzard(暴风雪)in almost 50 years struck the city, Joey ventured outside.

It's unclear what purpose Joey had for leaving home. He braved the snowstorm and walked a considerable distance before finally stopping outside Aughtry's house, just seven-minute drive from the North Park Theatre, where he had worked as a janitor since 1980. Before the blizzard hit, the theater's manager had called Joey, telling him not to come to work. However, Joey was used to following a routine, and even during the pandemic when the theater was closed, he had shown up several times.

At around 6:30 a.m., Aughtry noticed a man standing helplessly in front of a snowbank from her balcony. He was crying out in pain. Aughtry went downstairs and tried to communicate with him, but he was too frightened to speak, continuing to shout uncontrollably. Aughtry had no choice but to return home and call her husband. Together, they went into the storm once more. After Aughtry spoke to him gently, assuring him he was safe, Joey's cries softened, and began to calm down. With steady hands and reassuring words, Aughtry and her husband carefully guided him through the snow, step by step, until they finally brought him into the warmth of their home.

When they got back home, they carefully examined the poor old man's condition. Having wandered in the storm, he was totally wet and couldn't help trembling, his clothes frozen hard, his fingers and toes frozen numb without sensation. It was unclear how the man had managed to walk so far in the blizzard, but it was obvious he was terrified. No matter how they tried to ask him questions, he couldn't utter a single word.

  • 13、I got afraid when I was going to join Thompson Rivers University (TRU) here in Canada. The fact was that I was far away from my country with a totally new culture and new people and I became nervous because I had no experience of getting adjusted with a whole new place, language and culture. Speaking English fluently and maintaining my confidence when chatting with each person here posed another for me.

Before I landed in Canada, I had known I would face a lot of problems. It happened especially when it came to figuring out how to fix it or make the necessary adjustments here. I wasn't able to communicate with people so easily because the accent here in Canada wasn't familiar to me. That directly contributed to my hesitation in talking with people around me. Besides, the fear of making mistakes was killing my desire to give it another try.

To break through these difficulties, I realized that I had to actively engage with the local environment and the diverse community around me. When I first came to TRU, I met with national and international students, talked to them about our culture, like how our interactions happened, the way we communicated, and the traditions we were keeping. I started to observe people, including how they talked, their expressions, intonation, stress, vocabulary, and the way they used phrases in conversations. I also started to talk with my friends in English. I persisted increasingly to gradually adapt to and feel at ease with the new language, culture, tradition and all the aspects that required my adjustments.

Nothing is impossible to achieve. All you need to do to achieve a goal is hard work, practice and not feeling shy when you're making a mistake. I am learning a lot by making lots of mistakes. Now mistakes don't bother me anyway.

    A. This was a big challenge for me.

    B. However, I was still at a loss sometimes.

    C. From all this I have learned a vital lesson.

    D. But things still went beyond my expectation.

    E. Canadians use different intonation and stress.

    F. I realized that I should get accustomed to it with all my might.

    G. Those long conversations were growing up my confidence level.

  • 14、In the video game Space Invaders Extreme 2, a player has to fire weapons to destroy aliens attacking Earth. These aliens move fast, raining down from the top of the screen and claiming a player's "life" if they reach the bottom.

A study in Nature suggests that while destroying digital aliens might seem unrelated to distinguishing between words, such action video games may help children at risk for developmental dyslexia—a genetic language disorder that makes processing words difficult — by improving their ability to perceive spoken words and sounds.

In the study, 79 prereading children with family histories of dyslexia took several language tests, including listening for differences in made-up words — a task that can be challenging for dyslexic people. The kids were then split into four groups. One played Space Invaders Extreme 2, a second played a non-action video game, a third attended speech therapy, and a fourth received no intervention. Gamers played four times a week for 45 minutes each over a month and a half, and those in speech therapy attended 45-minute sessions twice weekly over about four months.

By the end of the trial more than 80 percent of the Space Invaders players were significantly better at the word-identification task than before, and they showed greater improvements than any of the other three groups. The researchers aren't sure why scores on the other language tests did not improve notably — but they say that this finding could be valuable. "If we can target these small cognitive functions before children are older and lose some brain plasticity, then perhaps we can treat aspects of dyslexia before they've fully formed," says Simone Gori, co-author of the study.

Dyslexia often goes untreated in Italy's overburdened public health and school systems, says Marilu Tempini, a behavioral neurologist at the University of California. She hopes to see larger future studies conducted in other languages as well. "Eyes are an extension of the brain," she says, "so when we play video games, it's directly connected to our cognitive function-and there is so much research potential there."

(1)、What do we know about Space Invaders Extreme 2?
A、It is regarded as violent. B、It focuses on the intelligence. C、It requires fast action. D、It contains a VR setting.
(2)、According to Simone Gori, what is the significance of the finding?
A、It proves that children with dyslexia can be cured. B、It offers hope that the public health system in Italy will be improved. C、It suggests that video games can replace the traditional speech therapy. D、It indicates that action video games can be used for early intervention of dyslexia.
(3)、What is Marilu Tempini's attitude towards the study?
    A、Doubtful. B、Favorable. C、Dismissive. D、Conserved.
(4)、Which of the following might be a suitable title for the text?
A、Hidden Secrets Behind Dyslexia Revealed B、Action Video Games Advance Word Awareness C、The Most Effective Coping Strategy for Dyslexia D、Video Games Designed to Improve Cognitive Function
  • 15、Two thousand years ago, lemurs-an animal like a monkey, and giant "elephant birds" wandered through Madagascar. A thousand years later, they were nearly gone. Now, a new study has figured out the mystery of their annihilation.

The new study traced back to 2007 when Jean-Aimé Rakotoarisoa and a group of researchers created the Madagascar Genetic and Ethnolinguistic project to study the long-debated question of the ancestry of the Malagasy, the island's major native ethnic group. Though Madagascar is located about 425 kilometers off the east coast of Africa, the Malagasy language is similar to the Austronesian languages spoken 7,000 kilometers across the Indian Ocean. There's long been a question about when and how people came to Madagascar, and how they influenced the large-bodied animals, including giant lemurs, elephant birds and turtles.

Between 2007 and 2014 the team traveled to 257 villages around the island. They collected saliva (唾液) samples and musical, linguistic, and other social science data. In the new study, the scientists genetically analyzed the saliva and used a computer program to model Malagasy ancestry and estimate how it changed over generations.

They found the modern Malagasy population is descended from a small ancestral Asian population. By 1,000 years ago, this small group had made it to the island. Other studies have found that at the same time, the population of Madagascar exploded and that the lifestyle of the people changed as well. Before, humans had lived alongside animals and hunted in small groups. Then, they built large settlements, planted rice, and grazed cattle in the field, archaeological evidence shows. The researchers believe the population growth and these changes, paired with a hotter and drier climate, likely led to the disappearance of the giant creatures. The researchers agree the timing lines up, give or take 100-years, but they believe the changing climate played less of a role.

Understanding humans' role in the Madagascar extinction is urgent today, especially as modern giants such as elephants and rhinoceroses are threatened. We need to know what causes major changes, so we can save ourselves from a potentially terrible future.

It was the day of the school's art exhibition. Students from various classes had been preparing their artworks for weeks. The exhibition hall was filled with many paintings, sculptures, and handicrafts, each one carefully crafted and placed to display the students' best efforts. The walls seemed to come alive with colors and shapes, as the morning sunlight streamed through the high windows, casting a warm light over the displays.

Miss Smith, the art teacher, was walking around, admiring the students' wonderful work. Suddenly, she noticed that Jack, one of her most talented students, was standing alone in front of his painting, looking rather depressed. His painting, which was usually filled with lively colors and unique perspectives(视角), seemed dull and unfinished today. The edges were rough, and the colors seemed to mix together without the usual harmony.

Miss Smith went over and gently asked Jack what the matter was. Jack hesitated, and then admitted that he had been going through a tough time lately. His parents were pressuring him to focus more on academics and were considering making him quit art classes. This had been weighing heavily on his mind, and he had lost his inspiration. He had spent many sleepless nights wondering how to balance his love for art with his parents' expectations.

Miss Smith understood the situation all too well. She knew Jack had a real gift for art and didn't want to see him give up so easily. She told Jack that she would talk to his parents and try to make them understand his passion. She told stories of famous artists who had faced similar challenges but had gone on pursuing their dreams. She also showed Jack some sketches(素描)she had made when she was young and had faced doubts about her own artistic path. Jack's eyes widened slightly as he saw the familiar struggles in his teacher's past works.
