Barton is a rock star to hundreds of hungry wild monkeys that he hopes his music can calm, at a time when Thailand' s coronavirus-induced tourism gap means fewer visitors to feed them, and less funds for their welfare. "We need to make an effort to make sure that they eat properly. And when they eat properly they will be calmer and will not be aggressive," said Barton, 59, a long-time Thailand resident.

Barton has played at four venues in Lopburi, a province famous for its attacking monkeys, including at an ancient Hindu temple, a hardware store and a deserted cinema. The monkeys are instantly drawn as he plays Greensleeves, Beethoven's Fur Elise and Michael Nyman's Diary of Love, some sharing his stool, others climbing onto his shoulders and touching his head.

Barton maintains focus as a small monkey runs up and down the piano keys as others chew at his sheet music before one tries to take it away. "A wonderful opportunity to see the wild animals just being themselves," said Barton, from Yorkshire in northern England. "I was surprised to play the piano and find that they were actually eating the music as I was playing it. I wasn't going to let those things distract (使分心) from the project which is to play the music for these wonderful monkeys." They are his latest audience, having played Bach, Schubert, Chopin, and Beethoven for more than a decade to elephants at retirement shelters.

Barton hopes to raise awareness of the monkeys' hunger while also studying their behavioral responses to classical music.

BLACK-NECKED CRANE FESTIVAL (BHUTAN)

Celebrated in the courtyard of Gangtey Goemba, Bhutan, the Black-necked Crane Festival draws in large crowds of locals to celebrate the arrival of the endangered birds, which are sacred (神圣的) and a symbol of longevity in Bhutan. The festival is a one-day event, including various folk dances and songs, children dressed up in crane costumes and masks, and performing plays that raise awareness for environmental conservation. This year it will be held on November 11, 2024.

FES FESTIVAL OF WORLD SACRED MUSIC (MOROCCO)

Launched in 1994, with Morocco' s King Mohammed VI as its royal patron, the Fes Festival of World Sacred Music has grown to be one of the best music festivals in the world, attracting 100,000+ attendees each year. This festival was created to showcase the ancient city of Fes' rich traditions in arts, knowledge, and spirituality with around 60 different concerts on offer. This year the festival will take place from June 4to June 12.

HOGMANAY (SCOTLAND)

Hogmanay is Scotland' s New Year' s celebration, which lasts from December 31 to January 2. It's a great celebration that begins with a massive torchlight parade and continues through street festivals, concerts, fireworks, and gathering to sing the traditional Scottish song "Auld Lang Syne." Additionally, many families do a thorough house cleaning, and blessing the house with holy water from a local stream to prepare for the New Year.
