  • 1、The global success of Chinese apps like TikTok, RedNote (Xiaohongshu), and AI models like DeepSeek highlights a surprising trend: China is gaining cultural influence among young Americans, not just in technology but also in creating appealing online experiences.

China's Internet actually is cool. Chinese products and services have an increasing originality, especially Chinese apps, which stand out for their creativity. TikTok, used by over half of Americans, offers engaging content that feels more dynamic than U.S. platforms. Its mix of humor, creativity, and slight rebelliousness (叛逆) attracts teens seeking freedom from traditional norms. TikTok was briefly shut down earlier this month, and the site faces an uncertain legal future. Many young users turned to RedNote, a Chinese lifestyle app filled with odd content like fashion tips and cooking instructions. Though unfamiliar to older generations, its mix of Chinese culture and global youth trends creates a unique appeal.

As for the AI large-language models, DeepSeek, an AI model developed by a Chinese company, is a miracle, which combines technical skill with playful personality. Unlike rigid Western models, it writes creatively — even reimagining classic literature from an AI perspective. Its rise to the top of Apple's app store shows how innovation and affordability can win over users.

The decline of Europe's cultural appeal gives rise to the trend. In the past, American teens admired European sophistication (精明), but today's youth seek fresh alternatives. With its economic power and global reach, China naturally fills this gap. Additionally, young people often reject their parents' preferences, and China's tech-driven culture feels extremely new.

While U.S.-China relationship dominates headlines, ordinary interactions tell a different story. On RedNote, American and Chinese users bond over shared interests like cooking or fashion. DeepSeek's fair answers on American topics build trust. These connections prove cultural gaps aren't unbridgeable.

Actually, China's tech success isn't just about hardware or data — it's about creating products that resonate (共鸣) emotionally. For American youth seeking novelty, China's Internet culture offers something refreshingly different. This cultural shift, paired with technological advances, positions China as a unique party in shaping global trends.

  • 2、Sugar-free cookies, reduced-sugar cereal, sugar-free candy, diet soda... are these better for you? Since sugar became a taboo (禁忌) in the nutrition and wellness world, sugar-free food items and drinks have acted as substitutes for once beloved sweet drinks and snacks. Claiming to be ZERO sugar means it is healthier, better for diabetics, and helps you slim down... Right?

Wrong. Sugar-free isn't better for you. In fact, sugar-free is worse.

Sugar-free means that artificial sweeteners are used instead of real sugar. The problem: these sweeteners do not come from natural sources and they can cause you more harm than good.

Let's get into what these artificial sweeteners actually are. Sugar-free sugar sounds wrong and that's because there is no such thing as sugar-free sugar. Some of these sugar-free alternatives still contain sugar and the ones that don't contain sugar have chemicals your body often does not know how to process.

Most artificial sweeteners are a lot sweeter than sugar, so only a tiny amount is needed. That's why they can market sugar-free alternatives as "low-calorie" or "no-calorie". It also means that you get no nutritional value from consuming them, which is why many sugar-free substitutes are classified as "non-nutritive". These artificial sweeteners tend to hide under sneaky names. Actually, they are 200-600 times sweeter than sugar.

When you eat sweet stuff, your body continues to desire it and, even though your body cannot metabolize (代谢) these sugar-free alternatives, your brain does not know the difference. In turn, sugar-free alternatives connect to weight gain and type 2 diabetes (糖尿病).

Artificial sweeteners also damage your gut's ability to break down sugar, which impacts everything you eat. In other words, your body doesn't know how to handle artificial sweeteners because they have nothing real to process.

A good rule of thumb: stay away from artificial sweeteners and look for non-sugar, natural sweeteners like Stevia or date sugar. In the war against artificial sweeteners and real sugar, both lose. Satisfy your sweet tooth with natural sugars that come from fruits and stay away from products claiming to be sugar-free or diet!

(1)、What can be learned about sugar-free products?
A、They don't taste sweet. B、They are more nutritious. C、They help lose weight. D、They contain artificial sweeteners.
    (2)、Why are sugar-free alternatives described as "low-calorie" or "no-calorie"?
A、They won't lead to weight gain. B、They are greener and healthier. C、They are much to everyone's taste. D、Small quantities of artificial sweeteners are used.
(3)、What do we know about artificial sweeteners?
A、They present a bigger health risk. B、They can be easily broken down. C、They are as sweet as sugar. D、They improve our ability to metabolize.
(4)、What is the author's final conclusion?
A、Real sugar is a better choice. B、Stay away from sugary products. C、Choose sugar from natural sources. D、Sugar-free products are healthier.
  • 3、I have no intention of looking down on business, yet it simply didn't suit me. Initially, I entered the business world for financial gain. Besides being able to support my family, money was all I got from it. It failed to bring me a sense of fulfillment, which made me immersed in dissatisfaction and even suffering from torture and pain. My one ambition was to save enough money to quit and go to Europe to pursue my passion for music.

During that period, I would rise at dawn to practice playing the violin before heading to work. At noon, instead of having lunch with my business associates, I would frequent cheap cafes, where I had a quick meal and wrote down some violin exercises. After a long time of such efforts, I finally managed to save enough money. As my family's financial situation had improved and they no longer required my financial support, I resigned from my position. The moment I left, I felt as if I had been released from prison, and soon I set sail for Europe to pursue my dream.

The four-year study in Europe was beyond amazing. Though I worked more diligently than I could have ever imagined, every single moment was a source of joy. "Enjoyed" is far too mild a word to describe my feelings; I was truly on cloud nine. For the first time, I felt that I was truly living, engaged in what I loved and was meant to do.

If I had remained in business, perhaps I would be a relatively wealthy person today. Nevertheless, I firmly believe that I would not have achieved a truly successful life. I would have given up all those intangible rewards, those inner satisfactions that money can never purchase, and that are often sacrificed when one's main pursuit is financial success.

Quitting my job went against the advice of nearly all my friends and family. We are so conditioned to link success with money that the idea of giving up a well-paid job for a dream seemed almost crazy. If so, all I can say is "Gee, it's great to be crazy."

Money is a wonderful thing, but it's possible to pay too high a price for it.

(1)、Why did the author go into business?
A、Because he hadn't identified his passion. B、Because he was immersed in dissatisfaction. C、Because he had to earn money and help his family. D、Because he had no intention of looking down on it.
(2)、Which can best replace the underlined word "intangible" in paragraph 4?
    A、Invisible. B、Painful. C、Accessible. D、Possible.
(3)、Which of the following can best describe the author?
A、Honest and tolerant. B、Responsible and fearless. C、Diligent and talented. D、Innovative and considerate.
(4)、What is the main idea of the passage?
A、The author's experience of studying music in Europe. B、The author's regret of engaging in the financial industry. C、The importance of family's support and financial success in life. D、The struggle between a career in business and the pursuit of one's passion.

  • 5、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

People will never know what difference a name can make! I've never read an official study on the matter, but I've noticed that in animal shelters, black cats are the most overlooked. Black seems to be the least preferred of cat colors, ranking below all combinations of white, orange, gray, spotted and striped. Black cats are still stereotyped (刻板印象) as Halloween cats, creatures of bad luck, more appropriate on a witch's broomstick than curled up on your pillow. To make matters worse, in cages, black cats become close to invisible, fading into the dark shadows in the back of a stainless-steel cage.

For eleven years, starting when I was ten years old, I volunteered at an urban animal shelter. It always struck me as particularly unfair that, time after time, I'd get to know affectionate, adorable black cats, only to watch them be passed over by adopters merely because of their color. I assumed there was nothing that could be done.

One day, I spent a few minutes petting a sweet, black half-grown kitten, who had been found as a stray and brought to the shelter. The slender thing purred warmly at my attention, gently playful as she patted my hand with one paw. I noticed there was no name written on the informational card on her cage.

Since volunteers were welcome to name the strays that came to the shelter, I thought for a moment about what I could name this black kitten. I wanted to think of a name that could give the kitten the kind of appealing "color" that might encourage an adopter to take a second look. The name "Jellybean"(彩色糖豆) popped into my head, and I wrote it on the card, just as I'd named thousands of cats in the past.

  • 9、What is failure? The inability to achieve something or lack of success is known as a failure. Yes, failure hurts. It makes us feel miserable at times. When we fail in life, it can be difficult to get up again, but let me tell you this:

    Toughness

The first thing that we learn from our failures is toughness, which is one of the most important life skills to build. Building toughness is more useful than we think it is.. Only through toughness can we adopt the appropriate behaviors to overcome change. Toughness can also help us build perseverance and motivation.

    Modesty

All of us know that our egos(自我) are very sensitive.. Most of the time, a healthy dose of failure will keep our egos at bay and they will teach us modesty. Failure, thus, will actually make us modest.

    Flexibility

No matter what happens, we must always learn to be flexible in life. It is a tough pill to swallow because even the best-laid plans can be disrupted..This is why we must always be flexible, and failure teaches us to be flexible. When we learn to adapt, we can easily overcome challenges and become the best version of ourselves.

It is just like flexibility. When we fail at something, it teaches us to approach the problem from a different angle. If you are terrible at something, don't be ashamed. Work on your skills and learn to tackle the situation from a different perspective and skill. Eventually, you will be successful.

Intelligent failures are actually very beneficial for us, bringing us knowledge, insight, and value. Whenever we fall down, the best approach is to pause and reflect. Only that will lead to a better outcome.

    A. Courage

    B. Innovation

    C. We learn more than you think from failures.

    D. It can actually help us grow a healthy and strong mindset.

    E. Once out of control, they can become beasts on their own.

    F. So, humility is a significant component in interpersonal communication.

    G. However, you can be successful in life and all it takes is a bit of an adjustment.

  • 10、Parents all over the world know that getting kids to eat healthy foods is an uphill battle. Getting them to avoid junk food when they've got some spending money is even tougher. However, new research by Szu-chi Huang, an associate professor of marketing at Stanford Graduate School of Business, shows that children tend to choose healthier food if you offer them a deal.

In their study, more than 2,400 kids ages 6 to 11 were offered three-day discount they could use at school to buy healthy beverages (饮料) such as a cereal shake or a natural fruit beverage. The children did react to the price promotions, buying more of the healthy products. Huang believes that the discounts worked partly because of their novelty. "If we can make it fun, like a puzzle or a game, we draw children's attention to price and value," she says, "which may not have been important to them before."

Another key finding is what happened after the experiment was over and the discounts ended. At one school children continued to choose healthy options more frequently than before the study. This surprised the researchers since it refuted what they'd seen in the literature. The reason for the effect, Huang believes, is that this study promoted a healthy option that was not very expensive to begin with. The experiment encouraged children to pay attention to price, so this relatively inexpensive healthy product kept its appeal even after the discount removed.

However, this also suggests that short-term discounts on healthy food could have the unintended longer-term effect of drawing cost-conscious kids toward cheaper, less healthy products. In contrast, long-term incentives (激励) could steer (引导) kids toward healthy products that are seen as relatively affordable, bridging the "price gap" between inexpensive, unhealthy food and more expensive healthy foods. What's essential, Huang says, is to help develop healthy consumption habits and preferences in children that last beyond the length of the promotion.

Huang says this research has lessons for marketers, who often struggle to make healthy products attractive to kids. It also could help schools provide healthier options since they act as "gatekeepers" for what students eat during the school day and how products are promoted on campus.

(1)、What may be Huang's explanation of kids' positive reaction to the price promotions?
A、The discount was new and fun. B、The option was healthier and cheaper. C、Kids could play games with classmates. D、Kids realized the meaning of price and value.
(2)、What does the underlined word "refuted" in the third paragraph mean?
    A、Refused. B、Contradicted. C、Supported. D、Compared.
(3)、What potential disadvantage might short-term discounts have?
A、They promote a habit of healthy eating. B、They may boost unhealthy consumption. C、They affect kids' understanding on value. D、They make unhealthy food more expensive.
(4)、Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text?
A、Food: a Balanced Diet Needed for School Kids. B、Insights: Lessons for Marketers to Attract Kids. C、Discounts: Tricks Steering Kids to Healthy Food. D、Games: A Short-Terms Appeal to Unhealthy Food.
  • 11、Putting the uniquely human version of a certain gene (基因) into mice changed the way that those animals vocalized (发声) to each other, suggesting that this gene may play a role in speech and language, according to a new study in the journal Nature Communications.

For years, scientists have been trying to find the different genes that may have been involved in the evolution of speech, as language is one of the key features that sets humans apart from the rest of the animal kingdom. "There are genes concerned with language that have not been human-specific," says Robert Darnell, a physician at Rockefeller University, noting a newly discovered gene called NOVA1, which is active in the brain, where it produces a protein that can affect the activity of other genes.

NOVA1 is found in many living creatures, but humans have a unique variant. Yoko Tajima, a postdoctoral associate in Darnell's lab, led an effort to put this variant into mice, to see what effect it would have.

One part of the study involved recording the mice making chirps (叫声). These cries typically occur when pups are separated from their mothers, and later in life males string similar sounds together into songs to court female mice. It turns out that genetically transformed mouse babies born in the same litter as normal mice chirped differently to get their mother's attention. And genetically changed adult males sang notably different romantic songs.

The study interested Cedric Boeckx, a researcher with the Catalan Institute for Advanced Studies and Research and the University of Barcelona, who called it "a real advance". Different from previous work looking at this gene in lab-grown mini-brains, doing this in mice allowed scientists to watch how it affected behavior, but Boeckx cautions that studies in mice have limitations. "The mouse is not your typical vocal learner," says Boeckx. "It produces vocalization but they are mostly naturally restricted. So it's not like us."

Still, he thinks it will make scientists even more interested in exploring the effects of this uniquely-human genetic variant as well as how it might interact with other genes known to be involved in language. After all, he says, humans are special in how we communicate, and knowing the list of genes involved in language "could tell us something about how we came to be who we are."

(1)、What did the new research discover?
A、A new gene variant in mice. B、A new way of vocalizing in mice. C、A new role human genes play in speech and language. D、A human gene variant involved in speech and language.
(2)、What do we know about NOVA1 from the text?
A、It is a gene unique to humans. B、It contributes to the evolution of speech. C、It directly controls language abilities in both mice and humans. D、It was the first gene linked to language discovered by scientists.
(3)、How did the researchers get their finding?
A、By studying recorded vocalizations in mice. B、By comparing brains of mice and humans during vocal learning. C、By training mice to imitate human speech using genetic engineering. D、By observing interactions between genetically altered mice and others.
(4)、What is Boeckx's attitude toward the experiment's conclusions?
    A、Negative. B、Favorable. C、Doubtful. D、Reserved.
  • 12、"What have I gotten myself into?" I wondered as I sat through a research meeting conducted entirely in Polish, unable to even read the title on the screen. Having only basic Polish language skills, I found my experiment in cross-cultural cooperation more challenging than I had expected.

The idea of spending time abroad hadn't occurred to me until my advisor suggested it during my first year. With his support, I enjoyed a remarkable summer in a laboratory in Japan, which left me wanting more. So, I applied for a Fulbright fellowship in Poland. To receive the fellowship, I first had to find a lab to host me, and neither I nor my advisor had any connections to Poland.

Relying on Google to translate lab websites, I began to send cold emails. When my eventual host responded, eager to collaborate, I was thrilled. I suddenly felt the possibilities for my research career were endless and global.

I was the first visiting scholar my research group had hosted from the United States, and my Polish colleagues were curious about what brought me to their country. This led to many fruitful discussions about the similarities and differences in how science is conducted across cultures. For example, much of the funding in Poland is awarded to teams rather than individuals. The system promotes cross-disciplinary (跨学科的) cooperations across the country, which in turn shapes how scientists design and carry out studies.

I learned as much about the history and culture in Central and Eastern Europe as I did scientifically. Colleagues related firsthand accounts about challenges the region faced during the Cold War. Many laboratories had limited resources, and they rarely published their research in English. Those conditions helped shape research on antimicrobial treatment into bacteriophage and antibiotics, and Poland remain leaders in the former to this day.

My cultural immersion made me a better researcher. I now see cross-cultural cooperations as a way to overcome communication barriers that can block progress in science. By stepping outside my comfort zone, I gained the confidence to navigate my research in new directions that I might have otherwise boxed myself out of.

(1)、Why did the author apply for fellowship in Poland?
A、To follow the advisor's suggestion. B、To practice Polish and learn its culture. C、To have another rewarding experience. D、To continue the research started in Japan.

A、He became an expert in Cold War history. B、He had access to cross-disciplinary cooperations. C、He obtained scientific knowledge and a global perspective. D、He secured individual funding for future research projects.
(3)、Which words best describe the author?
A、Helpful and determined. B、Cautious and innovative. C、Curious and competitive. D、Adventurous and inquisitive.
(4)、What does the author imply about cross-cultural cooperations?
A、They are essential for the advancement of science. B、They might box researchers out of a certain direction. C、They should prioritize language training over research. D、They are valueless for creative minds in scientific field.

Cold December wind blew through Chicago as Lila stood outside an old church, carrying snowflakes that stuck to Lila' s woolen scarf like frozen (结冰的) tears. Three weeks ago, she and her college friends decided to turn this empty building into a soup kitchen before Christmas. Many homeless people lived near their school, and the students wanted to help. They borrowed two large cooking machines and collected canned food, but everything felt uncertain.

On the first day, Lila wiped her sweaty hands on her apron. Only four helpers came instead of twelve — others were busy with exams. Marco, her friend who liked cooking, looked worried. "We need to make 100 meals with just six chickens," he complained, holding a knife. Through the boarded-up windows, they heard the shuffle of boots outside — people already lining up hours early, their breath fogging the icy air.

At 5:45 pm, one cooking machine stopped working. Lila felt her heart beat fast. She counted their food: 18 cans left for 73 hungry people. Mrs. Donovan, a silver-haired woman who often helped, touched Lila's arm. "Honey, my hands hurt," she said. "I can't peel more potatoes."

Then a thin man in a green shirt threw his plate on the table. "This isn't food — it's dishwater with noodles!" he shouted loudly and angrily. Lila's vision blurred (模糊) as she scooped more food into his bowl, her "I'm so sorry" drowned by the kitchen's chaos. That night, she found Marco weeping over a burnt pot, his apron splattered with failed attempts at cream sauce.

The next day, the team had a meeting. Lila, who was good at math, showed them numbers on paper. "We need 25 pounds of meat and 40 pounds of vegetables every day," she said. "But we only have one-third of that." The atmosphere seemed frozen, with everyone hanging their heads.

  • 18、Most self-motivation definitions consider how you can find the ability to do what needs to be done without influence from other people or situations. Self-motivation is encouraging yourself to continue making progress toward a goal even when it feels challenging. It's turning your shoulds into musts. How can you motivate (激励) yourself to achieve your goals?

Take responsibility for your life. Self-motivation is often difficult because it comes from you. If you don't take care of the underlying issues that keep you from making progress, you can fall back on blaming (归咎于) others for your failure. In some cases, you can rely on external factors and friends for motivation. In other words, you're the one who must take charge of your own life.

You need a powerful purpose to motivate you. Why do you want to build a business? It likely goes back to the ability to do what you want, when you want and with whom you want - the true definition of success. Connect your goals back to your purpose and you'll never lack self-motivation.

Reevaluate your goals. At any moment, the decision you make can change the course of your life forever. If you focus on your vision and purpose, but you're still not feeling inspired, you may need to make a decision to go in a new direction.

Create powerful beliefs. If you don't have enough self-motivation, it comes down to one reason: you don't see yourself as a self-motivated person. Change your negative beliefs into positive ones by conditioning your mind. Catch yourself when you think negatively about yourself and change that self-talk so that it motivates you instead of holding you back.

    A. Find your why.

    B. Create a great action plan.

    C. Here are some tips that might help you.

    D. You need to have a clear purpose to get enough self-motivation.

    E. The only limitations in our lives are the ones we put on ourselves.

    F. But at the end of the day, you're the one who has to put in the work.

    G. That is to say, if your why isn't motivating you, then you may need a new why.

  • 19、It's generally accepted that exercise is a key element of losing weight. But this long-held view has been called into question in recent years — with no shortage of articles and podcasts claiming it's unclear whether exercise increases your metabolism (新陈代谢) and helps you burn calories after you work out.

The central belief of these reports is that the amount of calories we burn each day is somehow limited. This idea was first proposed in 2012 by the anthropologist Herman Pontzer, saying that as you increase your daily energy expenditure (消耗) through physical activity, your body will find ways to cut back on energy expended on other biological processes—such as your resting metabolism. This leaves your overall daily energy expenditure unchanged. This theory has since been popularised in Pontzer's 2021 book Burn, saying that "we burn calories within a very narrow range: nearly 3,000 calories per day, no matter our activity level". His evidence was based on the observational studies that compared energy expenditure in different populations around the world.

But before you pack away your running shoes, let's look at what the research shows us. The most reliable evidence available on the topic actually shows that exercise does increase energy expenditure — though perhaps not as much as we might expect.

Indeed, Pontzer's own observational data shows that daily energy expenditure can vary by more than 1,000 calories per day in a group of older people. This directly contradicts his idea that it's fixed at 3,000 calories a day for everyone.

However, when we look at data from randomized (随机的) controlled trials, we can clearly see that exercise does have an effect on energy expenditure. They show a well-organized exercise programme done up to five times a week for six and ten months increases daily energy expenditure. These effects were shown in both young and middle-aged men and women. This research clearly shows that physical activity does increase how many calories you burn each day. And it varies a lot between people.

  • 20、Holidays are often described as picture-perfect moments: families happily united around a table filled with seasonal food favorites against a perfect background. For many parents, attempting to meet such unrealistic expectations can destroy their self-worth gradually. In the real world, parents are juggling (同时兼顾) more activities. It's all too easy to fall into survival parenting, an approach where the focus is on simply getting through the day. These holidays can feel like anything but a holiday.

    U. S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy released an warning in August 2024 calling for a rapid recovery of parental well-being. Murthy along with scientists and parents sees that the current stress of parenting is seriously affecting the physical and mental health of caregivers. He states his concern over reports that most days, nearly half of all parents feel seriously stressed.

Data from a 2022 Household Pulse Survey found that the majority of parents — including 35% with children under 5 and 54% with children between 5 and 11 — have no formal child care support. This is undoubtedly driven, at least in part, by the rising costs and increasing lack of day care choices.

The research shows that focusing only on getting through the day with your kids is linked to more stress and harsher parenting behaviors. When a mom or dad is in survival mode, they tend to be more likely to shout demands and criticize their children's behavior, as opposed (相反的) to thinking through the impacts of these behaviors. Stressed-out parents are quicker to criticize little things that get in the way of achieving immediate goals, such as spilling flour on the floor. And they are slower to notice and acknowledge their child's strengths, such as their interest in helping in the kitchen.

However, bringing joy back to parenting this holiday season — and any time of the year — is more straightforward than most recipes on Pinterest, a social platform. The secret is taking the pressure off surviving the moment and refocusing on the future you want to create.

(1)、What is the parents' real situation during the holidays according to the passage?
A、They effortlessly reunite with extended family. B、They balance work-from-home tasks smoothly. C、They battle hard through great stress. D、They promote parenting with pure delight.
(2)、What's the purpose of paragraph 3?
A、To analyze causes of parents' stress. B、To showcase the parents' stress. C、To tell readers the fact of rising costs. D、To explain how to get the data.
(3)、What will be most likely discussed following the last paragraph?
A、Ways to achieve long-term family goals. B、Necessity of reducing holiday expectations. C、Recipes for Pinterest-worthy holiday activities. D、Practical steps to bring back parenting joy.
(4)、Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A、Behind Parental Burnout: Holidays Hurting Modern Families. B、Beyond Holiday Survival Mode: Rebuilding Joyful Parenting. C、Holiday Daycare Crisis: A Hidden Threat to Parents. D、Strict Holiday Parenting: Stress Shaping Child Behavior.
