    Thanksgiving for the Soul

Working as a primary teacher in Pompton Lakes Primary School, New Jersey, I particularly believed in cultivating love in children from an early age. I wanted children to experience that it's more blessed to give than to receive. I wanted them to understand that love of society and love of life is not just lip service; that people somehow have to make it come alive. I hoped they could experience a sense of their own power to make a difference.

There was a rural area nearby where a lot of aged people lived in solitude (孤独). They either had no family or their children had left to work in big cities. Most of them lived on government aid to keep body and soul together. An agency, which was in charge of the elder people in this region, had once told me about a needy grandmother, Mrs. Wilson, who had lived alone for many years. I had always desired to do something for her. So I came up with the Thanksgiving plan.

In October, I told the eight-year-olds in my class about my plan. "I'd like all of you to do extra jobs around the house to earn some money," I said. "Then we'll buy food for a Thanksgiving dinner for a needy grandma who might not have a nice dinner otherwise."

Early in Thanksgiving week, the boys and girls arrived in class clutching (紧握) their hard-earned money. They had cleared rubbish, set tables, washed dishes, helped with younger siblings. And now they couldn't wait to go shopping.

I watched while they ran up and down the supermarket aisles (货架通道). At last we headed toward the checkout, pushing a cart filled with turkey and all the trimmings (配料). Then someone spotted a "necessity"—flowers, which caught their attention. All kids ran toward the holiday flowers, with one proposing, "Flowers! We can buy her a bunch of flowers!"

    注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;

  • 4、阅读下面短文,在空白处填入适当的内容(1个单词)或括号内单词的正确形式。

Filial piety, otherwise (know) as xiao, is at the core (核心) of Chinese culture. Originating from Confucian philosophy, filial piety means love and respect for one's elders and (obey) their wishes. But there is something else, too. (achieve) filial piety, you have to be there for them physically, and look after them in their old age.

In our modern 21st century, (globe) migration has long become a norm (标准). Many of my Western friends say they feel very little connection to (they) birth country after a few significant moves across regions.

, China's case is a little different. Although we Chinese young generations have embraced our new lives all around the world, the (strong) of our family ties and filial piety deeply links us our cultural roots. Like kites flying high in the sky, we will (connect) with the land and the people who have shaped our characters to make us we are.

  • 5、"When I was 8, a doctor predicted that I wouldn't live past 20. But now I'm here, at 29, happy with my life," says Ma Jun, the youngest laureate of this year's Junma Awards for Ethnic Literature in the prose1

Ma, who uses a wheelchair, was born in 1995 in the Ningxia Hui autonomous region. His2 piece is his debut prose collection, Qing Bai Shijie. The opening chapter delves into Ma's childhood memories. While his peers ran and played, Ma could only sit on the stone steps, watching in3 and sadness. His limbs were weak, and he couldn't move or stand without help from birth, which4   him from other children. This5 memory has stayed with him, and it became the title of his first6 published prose piece and the entire book.

Ma's writing journey began in 2016, the year he passed his college entrance exams but7 not to enroll in university due to his family's financial circumstances and his health conditions. Although his decision was8 love and sacrifice, it plunged Ma into despair.

The turning point came9 a friend gave him a book, Shi Tiesheng's best-seller Wo Yu Ditan. Shi, a renowned writer who also uses a wheelchair, had10 his struggles into profound literature. At first, Ma had no interest in the book — he had lost11 for everything. But one word caught his eye: "wheelchair". As he read, Ma felt a spark of light illuminating his world. He could gather the courage to do something, like writing, instead of staying in bed letting life pass him by.

He embarked on a three-year odyssey of writing the book by12 his own life, pouring his heart and soul into the words. In June 2023, Ma received unexpected good news: His book was one of 10 selected for publication through the project. This achievement marked a significant milestone in his13 journey.

Ma writes this line in the profile for his personal social media account as his motto: "Be a(n)14 writer." Writing is not just a profession for Ma — it's a lifeline, a way to15 the world and leave behind a legacy of courage, sincerity and hope.

  • 6、Most taxi drivers need a smartphone to get to their destinations. But sharks, it seems, need nothing more than their own bodies — and Earth's magnetic (磁的) field. A new study suggests some sharks can read Earth's field like a map and use it to travel long distances with accuracy.

Since the 1970s, researchers have suspected that some fish can detect magnetic fields. But no one had shown that sharks use the fields to find their location or navigate (导航), partly because the animals aren't so easy to work with. It's one thing if you have a small fish, or a baby sea turtle, but when you work with sharks, you have to upscale everything.

Bryan Keller, an ecologist at Florida State University, and his colleagues decided to do just that. They lined a bedroom-size cage with wire and placed a small swimming pool in the center of the cage. By running an electrical current through the wiring, they could generate a custom magnetic field in the center of the pool. The team then collected 20 young bonnethead sharks — a species known to migrate hundreds of kilometers — off the Florida coast. They placed the sharks into the pool, one at a time, and let them swim freely under three different magnetic fields, applied in random succession. One field mimicked (模仿) Earth's natural field at the spot where the sharks were collected, while the others mimicked the fields at locations 600 kilometers north and 600 kilometers south of their homes.

They used software to track the sharks' responses, observing which direction in the tank they were trying to swim towards. When the young sharks were exposed to the magnetic field of the place they were captured, or ‘home', they stayed put. But when subjected to the southern magnetic field, the sharks persistently changed their headings to swim north, as if trying to get back home. This suggests that the sharks were using the magnetic field to guide them, similar to how humans use GPS.

Surprisingly, the researchers found that the sharks didn't favor any direction when swimming under the northern field. Keller says this might be because they don't go north of their home location since there is only land there, and so they rarely have to find their way back south again. "This could support the theory that their ability to go back home is a learned behavior," he says. They might not know what to do in the northern field because "they've never been up there." says Keller.

Keller's research adds a significant piece to the still-incomplete puzzle of shark biology. Sharks have been declining at an alarming rate due to mostly overfishing and habitat change. Studying the life cycles and migration patterns of sharks can help us understand what arcas to protect when managing marine spaces.

(1)、Why is it difficult for researchers to prove that sharks can read Earth's field?
A、Sharks are too hard to follow and observe. B、Sharks are not sensitive to magnetic fields. C、Sharks are difficult to study in a laboratory setting. D、Sharks are on the list of endangered species.
(2)、According to Keller, what might be the reason why sharks don't favor any direction when swimming under the northern magnetic field?
A、They don't like the climate in the north. B、They've never been to the north of their home before. C、They learned to do so when they were young. D、The northern magnetic field was not strong enough.
(3)、From the passage, we can infer that Keller's research is significant because it ________.
A、provides a new method for capturing sharks. B、supports the idea that sharks' migration patterns are random. C、adds crucial information to our understanding of shark biology. D、suggests that sharks should be protected from overfishing.
(4)、What is the main idea of the passage?
A、Sharks use Earth's magnetic field to find their way on seas. B、Researchers discovered a new way to study sharks in labs. C、Shark populations are declining due to habitat change. D、Sharks have a learned behavior of returning to their home.
  • 7、Art has always occupied a special place in society. Many people consider artists to be the ultimate authorities on the nature and expression of beauty. For much of history, the practice of art was mysterious, and artists were viewed as being somewhat odd and often mad. Even the word most commonly associated with artists — inspiration — has its own magical qualities. Literally, "inspiration" is the breathing in of a spirit. Artists were thought of as people who were uniquely inspired to create.

Of course, artists contributed to this mythology (神话) . Many artists credited their talents to the presence of some supernatural power. Whole movements of art have centered on the supposedly otherworldly nature of art. For example, the Romantic poets believed that art was a term that meant an ultimate expression of beauty and truth. The search for this ideal led them to explore both natural and supernatural themes in their works.

Another persistent view of art regarded its divorce from logic. Reason and logic were the province of scientists and philosophers, whereas creativity and insight were the area of the artists. The two separate aspects of the mind were supposed to remain distinct.

But in 1704, a major breakthrough occurred. Sir Isaac Newton, mathematician and physicist, published his study of light, Opticks. One of Newton's major discoveries was on the nature of color. Using a prism (棱镜) , Newton found that white light is actually composed of all the colors of the rainbow. He even provided a scientific explanation for the presence of rainbows. The artistic community was shocked. A scientist had taken a beautiful and magical experience and reduced it to the simple refraction of beams of light through the prism of a raindrop. A scientist had ventured into their sacred territory.

More than a hundred years later, John Keats, one of the most famous Romantic poets, accused Newton of reducing beauty by "unweaving the rainbow." His colleague, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, famously remarked that the souls of five hundred Newtons would be needed to make one Shakespeare. And yet, from another perspective, Newton did not reduce the beauty of the rainbow; he enhanced it. In his search to uncover the secrets of the rainbow, Newton demonstrated the wonder, creativity, and inspiration of an artist. He also gave the world another opportunity to experience the sublime (绝妙). Newton's discovery paved the way for the development of the science of spectroscopy, a way of analyzing the chemical makeup of light. Now scientists can look at the stars and know their composition. The sense of wonder this ability creates is not much different from the wonder the poet or artist feels when staring at those same stars.

(1)、According to the passage, what was the common view of artists in history?
A、Artists were considered logical and rational. B、Artists were seen as inspired and somewhat strange. C、Artists were primarily focused on scientific discovery. D、Artists were thought to be without any supernatural beliefs.
(2)、How did the Romantic poets react to Newton's discovery about light and color?
A、They believed it added a new dimension to the appreciation of beauty. B、They credited Newton's insights to mystical influences. C、They were inspired to integrate more scientific themes in their poetry. D、They felt it faded the poetic beauty of natural phenomena.
(3)、Why does the author mention John Keats' and Samuel Taylor Coleridge's views on Isaac Newton?
A、To emphasize the superior creativity of poets over scientists. B、To highlight the impact of scientific discoveries on artistic perception. C、To state that Shakespeare's knowledge of beauty was unmatched. D、To show that Romantic poets objected to scientific progress.
(4)、Which of the following is the best title of the passage?
A、The Artistic Interpretation of Science B、The Contrast between Art and Logics C、The Interplay of Art and Science D、Isaac Newton's Influence on Arts

  • 12、Your Path to Emotional Maturity

Emotions play a critical part in life. In order to grow and be better than before, you must learn to be emotionally intelligent. Let's explore some powerful strategies to help you become emotionally mature!

    Try using "I" statements

Whenever you feel hurt, you need to tell others your feelings in a considerate way. The best way to do this is by using "I" statements instead of "You" statements. For example, you should use the statement: "I feel miserable and heartbroken" instead of "You make me feel miserable and heartbroken".

    Own your feelings

If you want to change yourself, start with taking ownership of your feelings. However, in some situations, instead of owning your feelings, you tend to deflect (转移) them and make others feel guilty about how you are feeling. Embrace them as a part of yourself because they are a part of you, right?

People interact with us like we are mind readers sometimes; this happens mostly in relationships. Your partner would want you to know exactly what they want and when they want it; this can be extremely annoying. Just as you aren't a mind reader, others aren't either. You need to share your needs with the other person, and they need to do the same with you.

    Mind your actions and words

Often, you say a lot when you are emotional, especially when you are angry. You need to mind whatever you say and do; this can either make the other person love or hate you. The strategy in a stressful situation is to focus on yourself instead of focusing on others; this will calm you down instantly.

    Always question your thoughts

Actions and words have the same importance; this is what I need you to understand. In some situations, your loved ones could be hurting you through their words or their actions, and you could also be wrong. What happens in more than 70% of situations is that you let negative thoughts take hold of you; this is completely wrong.

    A. Attempt to be mind readers.

    B. Communicate your needs.

    C. You'd better not let negative thoughts question your judgment.

    D. Thus, rather than dump them on others, learn to take charge of your feelings.

    E. The approach is non-aggressive and describes you as emotionally mature.

    F. If not controlled, it can have severe consequences, especially in your relationship.

    G. Let's say that you get into a fight with your partner, and you also get hurt.

  • 13、LignoSat, the world's first satellite made mostly from wood, reached the International Space Station (ISS) aboard a SpaceX cargo capsule on November 5, 2024. The palm-sized satellite, named after the Latin word for "wood", will be launched from the ISS into Earth's orbit later this month. Its mission is to determine if wood can resist the harsh conditions of space. If successful, LignoSat could pave the way for more environmentally friendly spacecraft designs.

The LignoSat Space Wood Project is led by Japan's Kyoto University. The researchers began by sending a small panel containing three different wood samples to the ISS in 2022. The panel was exposed to space for ten months before being returned to Earth in early 2023. After analyzing the results, the team picked wood from magnolia trees for the satellite.

"Nobody had ever thought about using wood for rocket science before," said Professor Koji Murata of Kyoto University. "Many engineers thought wood was old technology and couldn't be applied to cutting-edge technology."

The main reason for testing a wooden satellite is to reduce space junk. Current satellites are primarily made of aluminum. The metal reacts with oxygen when the satellites burn up in Earth's atmosphere at the end of their life cycle. This process releases aluminum oxide particles, potentially damaging the ozone layer. Wooden satellites, which leave behind only water and carbon dioxide, could help alleviate this issue.

"All the satellites that re-enter the Earth's atmosphere burn and create tiny alumina particles, which will float in the upper atmosphere for many years," said Takao Doi, an aerospace engineer. "Eventually, it will affect the environment of the Earth."

Researchers also see a future where trees could be grown on the Moon and Mars. Successfully testing a wooden satellite will demonstrate that wood can withstand harsh space conditions.

LignoSat will orbit the Earth for six months, gathering valuable data before burning up in the atmosphere. Murata and his team aim to use this information to design larger and more advanced wooden satellites and devices.

(1)、What is the main task of the LignoSat satellite?
A、To provide supplies for the ISS. B、To determine the endurance of the wood in space. C、To test the circling capability of wooden satellites. D、To confirm the size of the wooden satellite in space.
(2)、Which decision is made based on experimental results?
A、Deciding the exposure time of the trial panel. B、Sending different wood samples into space. C、Selecting magnolia wood as the satellite material. D、Cooperating with Kyoto University on the project.
(3)、What is the main environmental advantage of wooden satellites?
A、They can be repurposed through recycling. B、They will not release aluminum oxide particles. C、They can control the amount of space waste overall. D、They can be obtained as building materials in space.
(4)、What is the author's purpose in writing the article?
A、To describe the process of making the LignoSat satellite. B、To discuss the potential environmental impact of wooden satellites. C、To illustrate the practicality and meaning of using wooden satellites. D、To compare the features of wooden satellites and aluminum satellites.
  • 14、A parasocial relationship (PSR)is generally defined as a relationship in which one member of the relationship isn't aware of the other — for example, a fan loves a celebrity, but the celebrity doesn't know they exist.

The term "parasocial relationships" first appeared in the 1950s, when psychologists tried to understand how television viewers reacted to TV personalities speaking to them directly out of the screen. Later in the 70s and 80s, scholars began to assume that forming parasocial relationships was driven by loneliness. However, not-lonely people are just as likely to form a connection with that person on the screen. As fandoms(粉丝圈)became more visible throughout the latter half of the 20th century, parasocial relationships became associated with youth and immaturity.

It's true that adolescents particularly tend to develop intense parasocial relationships because it can be a chance to practice real adult feelings on someone at a safe distance. But digital interaction complicates these natural relationships. Since the rise of social media, the phenomenon of parasocial relationships has been hugely amplified(放大). The traditional arrangement of PSRs, where the fan has no actual contact with a celebrity, is visibly changed by our new means of communication — a celebrity might see a fan's message or even reply.

When fans are gaining access to the celebrity through social media posts, it increases the feeling of closeness. People think they really have more of a relationship than they do. Online fandoms, especially large ones full of adolescents with strong emotions can generate bad behavior among adults. Behavior that might have been limited to one person or a few people might be, thanks to social media, given the chance to spread. "There's a sort of echo chamber effect(回声室效应)where people convince themselves, ‘everyone agrees with me and therefore we are all right in our approach,'" says Gayle Stever, the author of Parasocial Experiences.

Parasocial relationships are natural and not inherently (固有地)unhealthy. But as Stever says, "Anything that can be true about a regular social relationship can be true about a parasocialrel ationship."

  • 15、The sounds of rain, birdsong, or the wind rustling leaves in the forest are all part of the music of nature. These sounds can fire emotions and promote calm. That's why tracks of nature have been used in so many songs like "Blackbird" by the Beatles.

Now, Sounds Right, an initiative from the Museum for the United Nations is cooperating with Spotify and other streaming platforms to recognize nature as a musician. This means that nature can be paid royalties (版税) that can be made use of when it comes to environmental causes and conservation. This new initiative allows artists who use environmental sounds to credit "Nature" as a featured artist and share the royalties.

"It's a way of saying to artists, We all use sounds like seagulls, waves and wind. Why don't we pay nature a royalty?" said Brian Eno, who remixed his collaboration Get Real with David Bowie. "Hopefully, it'll be a river, or a torrent, or a flood of royalties — and then what we do is distribute that among groups of people who are working on projects to help us deal with the future."

Other artists who contributed songs for the project include Tom Walker and Ellie Goulding, MO, and alternative music star Aurora who is releasing a new song, "A Soul With No King", that includes the sounds of a forest in her native Norway. "I feel like music that has the ability to make contact with nature seem appealing again," she said, "because, somewhere deep inside our soul, we are really yearning for it."

While there has been a long debate on whether streaming contributes to harmful emissions, giving nature credit and royalties can turn streaming to the right side of climate action. This project is just one of a growing movement to give nature legal rights and could restore the weak relationship between humans and the environment.
