Most of us look forward to the weekend as a time to relax, connect with friends and family, and tackle items from a to-do list that gets neglected during the workweek. Experts have defined this existential worry the "Sunday scaries". Though common and dreadful, the Sunday scaries are manageable.

    • Identify your anxiety sources

Anxiety is a normal human experience. Is it a deadline, meeting or presentation? Even if there's not a single reason behind your Sunday anxiety, organizing the stress you expect from the week ahead can help.

    • Structure your Sunday properly

When structuring your Sunday, try not to fill in too many chores.  Maybe a body scan meditation, maybe a mid-afternoon shower or bath, maybe an engaging movie or show. There is no right way to relax. Do whatever feels like a helpful distraction from the scaries.

    •

Getting rid of the Sunday scaries isn't just about minimizing the gloom of the week ahead. Instead of focusing on the awful things you expect from the week, build thrill over a coffee or lunch date with a friend you've been meaning to catch up with. Having something to look forward to will shift your thoughts and help improve your mood.

    • End your Sunday with the right energy

Maybe you want to journal, do a face mask, read a few pages of a good book. Do your best to honor this time and make it all about you. Allow yourself to loosen up so you can feel empowered and confident for the next day.

    A. Look forward to the week ahead

    B. Create excitement from the coming week

    C. Try to make out what's really causing you to worry about the week.

    D. It's important to make space for relaxing activities to ground yourself.

    E. Sunday night is an opportunity to give yourself some wind-down time.

    F. But as the weekend comes to an end, many of us experience a sense of anxiety.

    G. The Sunday scaries is an overwhelming feeling of anxiety about the next week.

It was 3 a.m. on his last night of holiday break, with an essay on nihilism due in the morning. On the hunt for quotes that supported his thesis, Bennett, the 15-year-old remembered "ChatGPT". Testing his luck and tight on time, Bennett typed into the blank chatbox: "Show me examples of Macbeth becoming nihilistic." Within seconds, the bot had got what he wanted and he wrote down the AI's answer, and submitted it. His teacher never caught on.

ChatGPT is a free-to-use chatbot that can answer questions at light speed, with each response being totally original. It has many applications, like writing code, suggesting recipes, and improving the quality of life for seniors and those living with disabilities. And it can do your homework.

Intentional or not, this nascent AI software is altering decades-old educational structures and changing the way we think about learning. Angela Misri, a professor in Toronto Metropolitan University, also acknowledged that the bot has forced her to rethink the structure of how she teaches. She said she'll now consider emphasizing oral presentations and interviews rather than written work to try and minimize opportunities for ChatGPT to impact her classes. She added that a colleague at TMU is turning to a "fishbowl" strategy, where students' names are put in a bowl at the front of the class and are drawn at random to explain their work.

OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, is a California-based research firm that works on projects to amplify the capabilities of artificial intelligence and explore its impacts on society. OpenAI says it's working on implementing safeguards to protect academic honesty, and will combine users' feedback to improve its product. In a statement made to Global News, OpenAI said "we don't want ChatGPT to be used for misleading purposes in schools or anywhere else, so we're developing ways to help anyone identify text created by that system. We look forward to working with educators on useful solutions, and other ways to help teachers and students benefit from artificial intelligence."

A new study suggests that mindfulness education — lessons on techniques to calm the mind and body — can reduce the negative effects of stress and increase students' ability to stay engaged, helping them stay on track academically and avoid behavior problems.

After finding that students who self-reported mindful habits performed better on tests and had higher grades, researchers from the Center for Education Policy Research at Harvard University wanted to know if school-based mindfulness training could help more students reap similar benefits.

They designed a study focusing on sixth-graders in a Boston school. The study showed that sixth-graders who participated in an eight-week mindfulness were less stressed out than their classmates who hadn't. Practicing mindfulness had helped improve the ability to focus in the moment, expanding students' capacity to learn and regulate their emotions.

Four times a week, instructors from Calmer Choice, a Massachusetts nonprofit specializing in mindfulness education, taught the group techniques and led them through practices, like focusing on a rock for a minute, then discussing when their mind wandered and refocused on the rock. Another group of sixth-graders took computer coding during that time instead. The students were randomly assigned between the groups.

At the end of the eight weeks, the mindfulness group reported being less stressed than they had been before the mindfulness education, and better able to practice self-control. And their amygdalae, the part of the brain that controls emotion, responded less to pictures of fearful faces than they did prior to the mindfulness work, suggesting their brains were less sensitive to negative stimuli, or, in other words, that they were less likely to get stressed out and lose focus. The group who attended coding classes didn't see the same benefits.

The findings suggest that the mindfulness instruction helped boost students' attention skills, as well as develop coping mechanisms for stress. The researchers believe it could be especially useful for schools to support students suffering from severe mental damage and other adversities that trigger stress in the body, hurting students' ability to succeed.

(1)、What was the purpose of the study?
A、To examine the techniques for practicing mindfulness. B、To study the effects of group mindfulness training on students. C、To see how students help themselves to perform better on tests. D、To understand why mindfulness training calms the mind and body.
    (2)、How was the study conducted?
A、By listing benefits of mindfulness education. B、By scanning the brain to see how it controls emotions. C、By teaching different students different mindfulness skills. D、By comparing two groups of students attending different classes.
(3)、What change took place after the students practiced mindfulness work?
A、They felt easier to stay focused. B、They were better at computer coding. C、Their mind was wandering more actively. D、Their brains were more aware of negativity.
(4)、Who are the most possible target readers of the passage?
    A、Stressful parents. B、Mindful instructors. C、Emotional students. D、School educators.

For some school children, PE is the best lesson of the week—a chance to leave the desk behind, get outside, and enjoy a run around with friends. For others, it is a frequently miserable experience—a time when they feel embarrassed, and may even experience physical pain.

The idea of competitive sport was a clear source of argument. Those who were good at it did not want those less able to "get in the way", while those less skilled felt annoyed for being made to compete. They also felt less "liked" by their PE teachers and their more sporty classmates.

Research demonstrates that a change in emphasis away from competitive sport and a move away to prioritizing participation over excellence can dramatically increase the confidence and participation rates of those less skilled—because it really is the taking part that matters. If schools value taking part above winning against other schools, the nature of PE changes.

As one pupil commented, "I have actually joined the football team now, because all the violence has gone. Before it was‘You made us lose the game...It's all your fault.' With the new approach, it is more like we are all in there just trying to get better. No one is to blame. Now it is worth doing."

To those who argue we need competitive sport to "build character", I would point out that there is quite simply no evidence to support this view. But what we can build when we allow young people to work together in a spirit of support and cooperation is leadership and mutual understanding.

If we need competitive sport to build our national teams, this should happen out of school. PE is about the participation of all—not the excellence of a few.

At home, the most important thing a parent can do for a child who struggles with PE is to take their concerns seriously. Being physically active is extremely important for children and young people, so how, when, and at what level they do it should be primarily their choice.

(1)、What does the author consider the most important in PE lessons?
A、The rules of sports. B、The participation of students. C、The spirit of winning over others. D、The frequency of sports competitions.
(2)、Why is the comment of one pupil mentioned?
A、To show the benefit of the new approach. B、To explain the nature of competitive sport. C、To prove the true spirits of football games. D、To praise the boy's courage to fight violence.
(3)、Which of the following may the author agree with?
A、Competitive sport should be banned at school. B、Schools should value athletic excellence more. C、Building national sports teams starts with PE lessons. D、Working together instead of competing develops good qualities.
(4)、What should parents do to help children who struggle with PE?
A、Make a scientific exercise schedule for them. B、Offer them mental support to increase their self-confidence. C、Encourage them to become physically excellent. D、Allow them to make their own decisions on sports participation.

    A Bowl of Noodles

Jenny was the only child in her home. She had a quarrel with her mother that afternoon and she ran out of the house angrily. She couldn't help crying sadly when she thought of he scolding from her mother. Having wandered aimlessly in the street for hours, she felt a little hungry and wished for something to eat, but it was not even possible for her, since she had nothing with her. She stood beside a stand for a while, watching the middle-aged seller busy doing his business. However, with no money in hand, she sighed and had to leave.

The seller behind the stand noticed the young girl and asked, "Hey, girl, you want to have the noodles?"

"Oh, yes... but I don't have money on me... " she replied.

"That's nothing. I'll treat you today," said the man,

    "Come in. "

The seller brought her a bowl of noodles, whose smell was so attractive. Jenny thanked the man and started to gobble (狼吞虎咽) up the delicious food... then cried silently.

"What is it?" asked the man kindly.

"Nothing, actually I was moved by your kindness!" said Jenny as she wiped her tears, "Even a stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother drove me out of the house. She showed no care for me. She is so mean and cruel!"

Hearing the words, the seller smiled "Girl, do you really think so? I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot. But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby. Can you number the times that she has cooked for you? Have you expressed your thanks to her?"

Jenny sat there, speechless and numb with shock; she remembered her mother's familiar face and weathered hands. "Why did I not think of that? A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel grateful, but I have never thanked my mum for what she has done for me. "

On the way home, Jenny made up her mind to make an apology to her mother for her rudeness as soon as she arrived home.
