On Aug 13, four Chinese irrigation sites won global（recognize） and were added to the 2018 list of Heritage Irrigation Structures, amongDujiangyan is the oldest and only surviving damless irrigation system in the world. 

Built over 2, 000 years ago inis now Sichuan Province in Southwest China, this amazing engineering achievement is still playing a crucial role in irrigating farms and providing water resources for more than 50 cities in the province. 

In ancient times, the region in which Dujiangyan now stands（threaten） by frequent flooding from the Minjiang River. Li Bing, a local official of Sichuan Province at that time, together with his son, decided to construct an irrigation system on the Minjiang River（prevent）flooding. After many studies, they found the（simple） solution was to build a dam, but this would have ruined the Minjiang River. So instead Li designed a series of（channel） built at different levels along Mount Yulei that would take away the floodwater while leaving the river flowing（natural）. Better still, the extra water could be directed to the dry Chengdu Plain,（make） it suitable for farming. 

Ever since the great Dujiangyan Irrigation System was completed, the Chengdu Plain has been freeflooding and the people there have been living peacefully. 

Borneo is home to some of the most extraordinary wildlife. Several years ago, I decided to go there for a visit. A local person offered to be my guide, which was a great bonus for me.

To a chef, the sounds of lip smacking （发出响声的）, and swallowing are the highest form of flattery （恭维）. But to someone with a certain type of misophonia （恐声症）, these same sounds can be suffering. Brain scans are now helping scientists start to understand why. 

People with misophonia experience strong discomfort, annoyance or disgust when they hear particular triggers （诱因）. Researchers previously thought this reaction might be caused by the brain overactively processing certain sounds. Now, however, a new study published in Journal of Neuroscience has linked some forms of misophonia to heightened "mirroring" behavior in the brain: those affected feel distress （痛苦） while their brains act as if they were mimicking the triggering mouth movements. 

The research team, led by Neweastle University neuroscientist Sukhbinder Kumar, analyzed brain activity in people with and without misophonia when they were at rest and while they listened to sounds. These included misophonia triggers （such as chewing）, generally unpleasant sounds （like a crying baby）, and neutral sounds. The brain's auditory cortex （听觉皮层）, which processes sound, reacted similarly in subjects with and without misophonia. But in both the resting state and listening trials, people with misophonia showed stronger connections between the auditory cortex and brain regions that control movements of the face, mouth and throat, while the controlled group didn't. Kumar found this connection became most active in participants with misophonia when they heard triggers specific to the condition. 

Some mirroring is typical in most humans when witnessing others' actions; the researchers do not yet know why an excessive mirroring response might cause such a negative reaction, and hope to address that in future research. "Possibilities include a sense of loss of control, invasion of personal space, or interference with current goals and actions. " the study authors write. 

Fatima Husain, an Illinois University professor of speech and hearing science, says potential misophonia cures could build on the new findings by giving advice to patients about handling unconscious motor responses to triggering sounds — not just coping with the sounds themselves. If this works, she adds, one should expect to see reduced connected activity between the auditory and motor cortices. 

Parenting styles have evolved over the years in response to the rapid social changes. Whether it is tapping technology or applying the best parenting practices, parents nowadays generally invest more time in finding out how best to raise their child. 

Modern parents have access to the internet and social media for ideal parenting advice and tips. There are also numerous parenting groups for different age groups on social media that parents can join. A parent can post questions from how to manage the constant cries of an infant to how to talk to a moody teenager, and chances are, the parent will be flooded instantly with advice and relevant articles. The availability of resources has helped modem parents to be more? involved and supportive of their children's development, academically, emotionally and socially. Modern parents are also keener to find out about effective parenting methods to raise disciplined and confident children. 

Meanwhile, one of modern parenting styles, helicopter parenting, arises. When parents become over-involved, over-concerned and over-controlling, they start helping children with what they are capable of on their own, for example, selecting activities and friends for them. Such a parenting style can restrict the children's ability to handle responsibilities independently. Children might be ill-equipped with life skills such as operating a stove or monitoring their schoolwork. Overprotecting children from failures may also be prevented from developing resilience （韧性） and acquiring skills like problem-solving. 

On the other hand, parents in the past tended to supervise less. Children were given more control over how they managed their schoolwork and the friends they chose to play with. They were often expected to shoulder the responsibilities of caring for younger siblings and managing household chores. Living in the preinternet era, parents were less informed about different parenting approaches and personalities. 

There is no one right way to raise a child and there is no need to doubt about the best parenting style. Each child is unique and should be raised differently by parents who are present, but-not hovering （守候）; who are supportive but not controlling; and who protect but not spoil.

T. J. 's picture was up there for doing something great. 

T. J. started showing up at school every day and answered questions from teachers for the first time. The event he started now yields 9, 000 cans of food in one day, taking care of 70 percent of the need for food for one year. 

T. J. reminds us that a bird with a broken wing only needs mending. But once it has healed, it can fly higher than the rest. T. J. got a job. He became productive. He is flying quite nicely these days.

A few years ago, I was having dinner with some good friends from work to celebrate the upcoming Christmas holiday. As we were finishing up that evening, one of my friends told us a very sad story about something that had happened the day before. Her son's friend was in his mid-twenties and self-employed. He lived on the second floor of a house nearby. Someone who lived on the first floor had been smoking and fell asleep. The house burned down. All the people escaped, but the house was completely destroyed with everything in it.

All this young man had were the clothes on his back and his pickup truck. He had no family in the area and nowhere to go. My friend was putting him up for a few days until he could decide what to do next.

Those of us sitting at the dinner table were horrified. Everyone started opening their wallets to contribute money. My friend put up her hand and said, "He will not accept money. We tried to persuade him, but he thinks it is charity and won't take it. All he wants is a warm coat and some used clothing if anyone has some."

We were all more than happy to fulfill this request and were told that he wore a size 2XL. None of us knew men who wore that size, so it was going to be a bit of a challenge to take care of this quickly.

It was a typically cold New York Christmas, and I couldn't imagine him without a coat. I shed tears on the drive home, a combination of grateful tears for the many blessings I had in my life and sad tears for this poor young man and his troubles.

I went to bed and woke up in the middle of the night with a very clear thought in my mind. I was to find this young man a coat.
