The lantern fair in Zigong, Southwest China's Sichuan province, boasts (拥有) a history of more than 1, 000 years. To mark the Year of the Dragon, many of the lanterns at the show feature the Chinese sign of the zodiac (生肖), but there are also  wide variety of other lantern designs to meet different needs. Visitors  prefer traditional lanterns can find lanterns with flowers and birds, and legendary figures, while lanterns with modern patterns such as cultural trends and online games are gaining (popular) among young people. 

So far, modern technologies such as 3D printing and artificial intelligence (use)to make the lanterns nicer and more vivid. The lantern show is also accepting the concept of (environment) protection. A set of lanterns (recreate) the famous Chinese statue "Bronze Galloping Horse Treading on a Flying Swallow" from the Eastern Han Dynasty (25-220 AD) was created by using 21 different kinds of waste materials, including (tire), and plastics to form its outside decorations. 

This year's show will run until July 30. The sets of lanterns will be updated (keep)up with the coming two traditional Chinese festivals-the Qingming Festival  the Dragon Boat Festival. Visitors can also enjoy folk arts, and Chinese music performances during  (they)lantern-viewing tours.

My 13-year-old daughter sent a postcard to us while we were still away on our most recent trip to California. It 1 our house about a week later. The touching 2 nearly brought me to tears.

The most important thing to keep in mind when deciding to serve another is that service expects no rewards. When you expect something in return, and are not serving out of the goodness of your heart, others will notice. Sure they'll thank you. 

When you give from your heart, the real power of service comes into play. Serving is a great opportunity to strengthen your trust and respect for another, and for them to do the same to you. Not only do you feel great about helping out, but you build your relationship with them, and they will feel more willing to help you in the future. 

However, why is service so rarely seen these days?  Sure, living in this day and age does not leave us much time, and the last thing people want to do is more work. I'm too busy, there's too much work, or I don't have the time, " may run through your head when you hear the word service, but the truth is the benefits are worth the sacrifice. Gandhi once said that, "The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others. "  Some ideas of places you can serve are volunteer centers, nursing homes, boys and girls clubs, and so on. You can serve people as long as you want to.

 Although it does take some work, the benefits are more than worth the sacrifice. Not only do you feel better about making another's day a little less stressful, but you strengthen your relationship with them and they will be more willing to help you in the future. 

Socially, few things are more annoying than someone repeatedly checking their phone in the middle of your conversation with them. Soon enough, you're having unhappy thoughts, thinking of their way like, I'm boring you; you're more concerned with whoever's on that phone than me; you don't care about me. None of that is necessarily true, but this is: "If someone is engaged in a great conversation, they wouldn't care about their phones," says Leslie, a psychologist and researcher at NYU.

Do you sometimes wonder: What should I have said to a rude person like this? What if we have to talk to such maddening persons? Experts have advice about how to deal with this.

Whether you say something or not, remember that the cell-addict's annoying habits aren't about you. "It's rude, for sure, but sometimes we mistake the behavior for more than what it is," says Leslie. "It's possible that they are facing something tough and merely experiencing nervousness or anxiety," he adds. It's also possible that their partner is stuck with a flat tyre (轮胎) or their kid is sick in hospital. The point is that you don't know.

So before you become angry at the cell-addict's open rudeness, focus instead on building a better conversation than whatever's going down on Instagram. You might never be able to achieve this, given the power of today's social media, so if you're close enough to a person, Leslie advises you to directly ask them: "What's on that thing that's so interesting?" Chances are that they will apologise at once and quickly put the phone away. But if the answer is something real, talk about it. Better yet, you can avoid the situation in advance by saying something like, "I'm really interested in catching up properly, so how about we leave our phones in the car?" If they indeed have that flat tyre or sick kid, at least you won't have to assume that it's because your stories are boring.

How much of your monthly grocery list ends up in the garbage? A new study reveals the average American spends nearly $1,500 per year on food they'll never eat.

A recent survey of 2,000 Americans reveals the average shopper wastes $1,493.93 on food per year. That's almost a fifth of their grocery bill after every shopping trip. One tenth of respondents claim they "never" purchase food they don't end up eating, while three in 10 say this is something they "always" do.

Half of respondents prefer to head to the grocery store alone, and when they do, half are more likely to stick to their list and 36% are less likely to buy food they don't want or need.

Keeping the list in mind is important, as 38 percent are more likely to let food be wasted if it wasn't originally on their shopping list. Seven in 10 add that when they go to the store on an empty stomach, they're more likely to buy foods they won't eat. So they don't do that that way. Some respondents appear to be in a wasteful cycle when it comes to food waste. Nearly half usually buy and end up wasting the same food every month because they think they'll get around to eating it.

"We can all do better to limit food waste by sticking to grocery lists and, when we get home, prioritizing eating our foods that are_perishable, like fruits, vegetables, and dairy products" says Avocado Co-Founder and CMO Mark Abrials in a statement.

Three-quarters feel guilty about throwing away uneaten food because it's a waste of money — and 48 percent feel the same, due to the harm food waste causes to the environment. "When it comes to food waste, nobody is perfect," Abrials adds. "But in order to consider our environmental impact, not to mention wasted money, we think it's essential to be thoughtful about everything we purchase — whether that's food, mattresses or other goods."

I didn't go to Santiago, Chile to look for friendship. In fact, Chile was not even on my wish list.

A mid-life crisis woman, I got a chance to study abroad. I only wanted to learn about global business, taste South American cuisine, and check "study abroad" off my wish list.

On the fifth day, I joined a group for a neighborhood work project aided by the anti-poverty (扶贫) organization. Our tasks were to build a water tower and paint the community center. Upon arrival, I couldn't believe my eyes. It was like a scene out of a horrible film. That moment redefined poverty for me because I had never seen such terrible living conditions. As advised, I showed no signs of the motional battle going on inside me.

Just as I was about to start work on painting, a request came through for a few volunteers to help Nadia, a local resident who volunteered to cook for us. I raised my hand to help because I wanted spend time with the people of the neighborhood despite my shortage of Spanish speaking skills.

Nadia had a sincere smile but not overly friendly. Even without speaking each other's language we started to learn about one another. We chatted about our children, our upbringing, shared picture of our family, struggled to instruct each other to communicate in the other's language, and laugh many times.

After we fed everybody and the dishes were washed, my day was over. But I found myself hesitant to leave. It was as if I had known her my entire life. I had not predicted the unselfishness heart I would encounter, and it was moving.

As we were waiting for the car to pick us up, Nadia showed me her plants that are well-maintains. I could see that despite the hard conditions she was passionate about life. She made me long to be stronger person. She showed me that poverty was external, but happiness was internal. I was seeking to give 100 percent for a well-intentioned cause, but I left receiving 200 percent from her.

Fantasia 2000

I remember disliking Fantasia 2000 in theaters as a young child, but I have developed a much deeper appreciation for the fantastic music as an adult. Disney has employed advanced sound tools to produce a movie that was under-appreciated at its first appearance.

Pete's Dragon

Budget: $65 million

Score: 60%

I love Disney as much as the younger generation. But it's disappointing to see flavorless remakes like The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast harvest billions at the box office while more soulful remakes like Pete's Dragon is largely ignored. 

The Rescuers Down Under

Budget: $38 million

Score: 70%

I won't lie to you, kind reader. The Rescuers Down Under is the only movie that I've never seen here and my honor won't allow me to pretend otherwise. According to Disney, it's about the world's bravest mice, Bernard and Bianca, who race to Australia to save a boy and a rare golden eagle from a cruel hunter. So, you know, normal Disney stuff. 

The Great Mouse Detective

Budget: $14 million

Score: 72%

Picture this: a young mouse named Olivia is committed to discovering the truth of her father's disappearance in 1897 London, and she got the help from his friends, Dr. Dawson and Toby. It's basically Disney's Sherlock Holmes.

This fall break, I took my son Nels, aged 15 , for our long-planned vacation in a national park. We had a rented cottage at the foot of the mountain by a lake. And my niece Susan, aged 12, also joined us.

On the first day, abundant items kept everyone occupied: picnicking, canoeing, shooting. When night fell, we sat around the campfire singing and dancing with other vacationers, all having a great day.

Nevertheless, on the second day, I noticed Susan constantly checking her screen, busily texting. That day, she stayed indoors glued to her phone, playing Axe Climber. Then, I had an idea, announcing, "Tomorrow, we'll hike to the top of the Stone Mountains."

Hearing this, Susan shrugged, as if to say, "Why?"

Eyes fixed on Susan, I continued, "Put your phone aside and climb a real mountain, OK?"

"Well," Susan responded reluctantly, "the Axe Climber is moving up to the final level, so I'll not be available tomorrow."

"Susan, that's not the actual wilderness experience. I hiked a lot. It's greater fun," Nels said persuasively.

"Sounds more like punishment," she mumbled. "I hate sweating."

"Never have you been on a mountaintop. Susan, have a go this time, and you are sure to love the feeling and pleasure it brings."

She finally nodded unwillingly, "Fine, I'll give it a try."

I smiled. Anyway, she agreed. The next morning, we awakened to the sound of birds singing. It was a nice day with the sun shining mildly and clouds floating leisurely. "A perfect day for hiking," I said. "I will go, Uncle," Susan replied mechanically.

Packing bread, bottled water and camera into the backpack, we set out for our destination. Against the blue sky, a rough trail wound its way to the top of the mountain.

"I still don't think it's a good idea," Susan complained, frowning.

"No pains, no gains! Come on!" I encouraged.

I am Li Hua. How are you getting along? I am writing to invite you to give the opening speech at the first English Festival in our school. The English Festival is a grand activity founded by the English Club of our school. Not only will the activity help us learn English culture, but also the communication between English lovers will be improved. 

The first English Festival will take place in our classroom at 2 o'clock on September 10th. After your opening speech, there are also a few speeches delivered by some student representatives. We are going to sing some songs and perform a short play for the audience. We have also prepared flowers and cards for our each teacher. Finally, we will take some nice photos to remember the wonderful moment.
