9、 第二节 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Edward and Stephen were both eighteen years old. They were so together in friendship that they felt themselves to be brothers. They had known each other since childhood, growing up in the same block in Liverpool.
Edward was fair and lean, while Stephen was dark and short. Edward's brown hair was always falling over his eyes, while Stephen wore his black hair in a natural style.
Each youngster had a dream of someday becoming champion of the world. Whenever they had time, the boys worked out at the Fencing (击剑) Club. Early morning sunrises would find them running along the Mersey River, wrapped in sweatshirts, with short towels around their necks.
Edward and Stephen studied hard and dreamt positively. Between them, they had a notebook filled with torn tickets of every fencing match they had ever attended. They each had taken part in many elimination bouts(淘汰赛) and had won many gold medals. The difference was in their style.
As fencers, Edward's lean form and long reach made him better in attack, while Stephen's short and muscular frame made him speed y in movement. Whenever they had met in the piste (击剑台), it had always been intense and competitive.
After a series of elimination bouts, they were informed that they were to meet each other in the finals next month —the winner to represent the Club in the Championship Tournament.
Fencing was like any other profession. The two boys knew friendship had nothing to do with it. But how would the competition affect their relationship? Everyday they continued to run together along the Mersey River. However, while joking with each other, they both sensed an invisible wall rising between them.
The day before the finals, they met as usual for their daily workout. After a mile or so, Stephen stopped.

Art Appreciation
Art appreciation is an often overlooked skill. It's more than simply looking at a piece of art and judging it based on what we see. It requires us to look deeper, beyond the surface into the artist's intention. The following tips would help you achieve it.
The first step is to prepare yourself mentally. Before you begin viewing any artwork, take moments to clear your mind of what a piece you think should look like. That's because an artist can present a unique visual experience by combining line, shape, form, color and space creatively.
Besides, examine the artwork closely. Take note of its elements mentioned above. Consider how these elements work together to convey meaning or emotion in the piece. Notice how the work makes you feel. What can I see? What is the artwork saying? What feelings does it arouse in me?
Information about the artist and when the artwork was created can help you uncover the deeper symbolism present in the work that may not be immediately evident. Art is often used as a tool for social change. To appreciate art, it's important to understand the context where it was created. The context behind a piece can be found through research and analysis.
Last but not least, sharing opinions on art also helps. Try discussing your thoughts on artwork with friends or family who may have different opinions. Taking the diverse understanding into consideration, you can approach viewing art work from different viewpoints. As a result, you can gain a new appreciation every time you look at it.
A. Relevant research counts as well.
B. Engage all your senses and ask yourself questions.
C. The process can bring you a fun and educational trip.
D. Leave your feelings aside and check out the questions.
E. To sum up, communication can also do good to your art appreciation.
F. With the previous ideas, you can get well prepared for the appreciation.
G. This will help you open up to different perspectives when exploring the work.

14、 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
Amblyopia is the most common cause of vision loss in children. In all cases of amblyopia, there's a stronger eye and a weaker eye, and it's winner-take-all in the cortex (大脑皮层). The cortex learns to ignore the signal from the weaker eye. By ignoring the weaker eye, the brain doesn't fuse (融合) images from both eyes. As a result, people with amblyopia can have trouble seeing in 3D.
In an attempt to solve this problem, doctors start treating patients with amblyopia at a young age, while their brain pathways are still developing. The children, usually under 7 years old, are often told to wear an eye patch over their strong eye to force the brain to rely on the weaker. But whenever the eye pa tch is removed, the competition can start over. For lasting improvement, new treatments need to teach the brain to stop suppressing(抑制) key visual cues coming from the weaker eye, says neuroscientist Dennis Levi of the University of California.
Now, several research teams are taking a new way that aims to get the brain to make better use of the information coming from both eyes. Several companies are working on treatment s based on this new angle. One is called Luminopia.
Luminopia's therapy involves having children watch videos through a virtual reality headset. As the children watch, the headset blocks out certain parts of the display for each eye, so the patients actually have to combine input from the two images to get the full video.
The company conducted a trial showing that children with amblyopia begin to see better on eye chart assessments after three months of one-hour sessions done six days a week. But they have yet to measure improvements in long-term effectiveness. It is believed that if people with amblyopia don't learn to fuse signals from both eyes from a young age, they never will. So some scientists think attempting to treat adults, whose brains have suppressed signals from their weak eye for decades, is a lost cause.
(1)、Why does a person with amblyopia have trouble seeing in 3D?A、His brain is unable to receive images. B、His weaker eye fails to receive signals. C、His stronger eye can't send signals to the brain. D、His cortex overlooks signals from the weaker eye.(2)、Which of the following best describes the effect of an eye patch?A、Temporary. B、Ineffective. C、Wonderful. D、Comprehensive.(3)、What is the working principle of Luminopia's therapy?A、Forcing the brain to rely on the weaker eye. B、Activating the weak eye to get the full video. C、Improving the situations with eye chart assessments. D、Blocking out the images received from the stronger eye.(4)、What can we learn about Luminopia's therapy from the last paragraph?A、It has an instant effect. B、Adults are its main targets. C、It has long-term effectiveness. D、More trials need to be conducted. -
15、 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
When I was a child, the new year's activity for my family is dumpling-making, but it's been years since I've last experienced the uniquely carefree comfort and connection I felt during moments. My family has changed a lot, and gatherings like these simply don't come together with the same ease as they once did.
This year, I came home in the evening to a dark house with pieces missing. I noticed things that I wouldn't have before, like how my family slept earlier and got up later and how my dog had more trouble jumping up on my bed. After all, it's easier to become blind to its subtle changes when you occupy it virtually every day of the year, and much harder when you must be exposed to months of accumulated change all at once.
Personally, the most precious childhood privilege is not the free extra snacks from flight attendants, but the privilege of thinking of the people and relationships around you with a sense of permanence. I mean this in the sense that it escaped my eight-year-old brain to think about how my parents were aging as I did or about the sacrifices they made for me until suddenly, I was an adult as they were.
I turn 20 in a couple months, so I've been seized with a feeling of adulthood, which feels far stronger than the transition into legal adulthood at 18 ever felt. It seems as if the "teen" part of"19"keeps me attached to the same category as the one my newly 13-year-old self occupied, carrying with it a certain comfort in the social allowances made for the immaturity inherent (固有的) to youth. But marching into 20 is different.
I'd so desperately wanted to move away and get a taste of independence upon starting college, but now I know that such freedom comes with loss and responsibility. Now I start to understand the governance of a circularity (循环) inherent to our lives and have a newfound appreciation for the things that remain the same.
(1)、What does the underlined word "subtle" in paragraph 2mean?A、Obvious. B、Sudden. C、Unusual. D、Unnoticeable.(2)、Which of the following might the author agree with when he was eight?A、Everything would be the same. B、His parents were becoming old. C、Free extra snacks were common. D、His parents had done a lot to him.(3)、In what way is 20 years old different according to the author?A、Physical maturity. B、The social expectation. C、The loss of freedom. D、The shift into legal adulthood.(4)、What can be the best title of the passage?A、A newfound appreciation for life. B、The difference between teens and adults. C、My passing memories of childhood. D、My reflection on the switch into adulthood. -
16、 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
Chinese singer Gong Linna released her new song, titled Return Home, which describes the overseas Chinese people's longing for their homeland.
Performed in Chaoshan dialect, the song is part of Gong's music project, which has the singer perform songs in different Chinese dialects. "It is very challenging to sing in Chaoshan dialect, which is a new language to me, and thanks to the songwriter Danny Sim and the song's producer Wesley Tan, who speak the dialect, I received intensive training and practised very hard," says Gong. "The beauty of dialects lies in telling stories of different places. It's like a music al map, allowing me to explore different places through dialects."
The idea of the song came from Qiaopi, a unique form of mail that served as both a letter and a remittance (汇款) sent by overseas Chinese people to their families in provinces of Guangdong and Fujian in the 19th and 20th centuries. At that time, many of those emigrants, particularly from Guangdong and Fujian, sent money back home to support their families, as well as communicating with their beloved ones and expressing their longing to be reunited.
"Dialects are a source of knowledge, traditions and the country's cultural heritage. When I listen to a song performed in a dialect, I feel the local culture instantly even though I never go there and know nothing about the place," says Sim, who wrote lyrics for the song, adding that there are a growing number of musicians in China performing in dialects, which allow listeners to get an emotional touch.
"Chaoshan dialect links people from the region. However, like many languages, it's dying. Many young people, especially children, rarely speak the dialect, which is a sad thing." Sim says, explaining why he is keen on writing songs by using the dialect, "I love my hometown and by writing songs in the dialect, I feel close to my home. Maybe that is, culture identity."
(1)、What difficulty did Gong face when performing the song?A、She had the language barrier. B、The culture was unfamiliar to her. C、The song had to fit in with the whole project. D、There were many unknown stories in the song.(2)、What does paragraph 3 mainly tell us about the song?A、Its history. B、Its influence. C、Its inspiration. D、Its significance.(3)、What can we infer about the songs performed in dialects according to Sim?A、They are dropping in numbers. B、They are seldom sung by young singers. C、They can stimulate affective bond. D、They help us know many unknown places.(4)、What drives Sim to write songs in Chaoshan dialect?A、A sense of duty as a song writer. B、A sense of belonging to his hometown. C、His eagerness to revive Chaoshan culture. D、His addiction to the charm of the dialect. -

According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), hundreds of marine(海洋的) species across the world come under endangered and critically endangered categories. Some of the endangered and recognizable marine species are named here.
Kemp's Ridley Sea Turtle
The Kemp's Ridley Sea Turtle, also known as the Atlantic Ridley Sea Turtle, is endangered as the rarest and smallest sea turtle.
Distributed throughout the Gulf of Mexico and U. S. Atlantic seaboard, they gather off the coast in northeastern Mexico and come ashore in large groups to lay eggs every year. As marine reptiles(爬行动物), they are threatened by oil spills, lack of food and marine pollution.
Vaquita
As a rare marine mammal, Vaquita is on the edge of extinction only a half-century after its first sighting.
Extensive fishing in the Gulf of California has endangered this marine species, resulting in a gradual drop in population since the 1940s. According to reports, there are only a dozen of these marine mammals left in the world since the percentage of dec line in their population was as much as90% since 2011.
Whale
Fin Whale is the second-largest mammal on the planet after Blue Whale and it is also a victim of hunting. According to estimates, the global population of Fin Whale ranges from below 100,000 to around 119,000.
Humpback Whale, another whale species, has also been listed as an endangered marine species. Before the introduction of the whaling moratorium (暂停) in 1966, the species was hunted for its fur, while the population dropped by 90%. Currently, around 2,500 Humpback Whales survive in the world.
Hawaiian Mon k Seal

19、 阅读下面短文,根据题目要求用英文回答问题。
Crowd control could soon become an important skill for climbers on Mount Everest, as important as physical strength or watching the weather. In a single day last week, nearly 40 people reached the top of the world — a record. Reports from base camp spoke of queues at dangerous ridges and crowds as people passed each other in the final dash for the 8,848 meters top.
More traditional mountaineers have been concerned about the circus atmosphere surrounding Everest in recent years, and there are warnings that the crowds are making the mountain more dangerous. In 1996, 14 died on the mountain when the members of several groups were trapped at high altitudes by sudden snowstorms. Bad weather in early May led to this year's jam on the summit ridge, but the loss, luckily, was light. Just four climbers died, including a Nepali Sherpa who had made 11 previous successful climbing.
Traditionalists are also worried about the growing tendency of climbers to set records and achieve "firsts", rather than simply climb the mountain. This year's crop of mountaineers included the oldest man, 64-year-old Sherman Bull from Connecticut, and the youngest, 16-year-old Temba Tsheri Sherpa of Nepal. An American with only one arm was on the mountain this year; an Indian with no legs also tried but failed. Erik Weihennieyer, an American, became the first blind person to reach the top of the world. His fellow climbers stayed in front of him on the way up, describing the type of land and ringing bells.
Nepal views Mount Everest as something of a cash cow. The government charges journeys a minimum of $70,000. That is probably why officials in Katmandu are ignoring concerns about overcrowding and talking about even more climbers coming next year. But a celebration of the 48th anniversary of the first conquest of Everest, by Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay, was cancelled after violent strikes. Tumultuous (动乱的) Nepali politics, it seems, could be just the crowd-control measure that Everest needs.
(1)、According to the author, what skills are important for climbers on Mount Everest?(2)、What are traditional mountaineers worried about?(3)、Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.●The Nepal government cares little about the overcrowding problem because of its internal tumultuous politics.
(4)、Do you think it is a good idea to limit the number of visitors to a tourist attraction? Why? -

The Failed New Year's Resolution: Three Tips to Get on Track
January is officially over, and many people are taking stock of their progress towards New Year's resolutions. The fact is that you probably haven't kept up with them as much as you hoped. But that's not your fault. . If you feel like you have already failed, here are three tips before you let go.
Practice self-compassion
Many people talk to themselves in harsh ways when struggling with new habits, believing self-criticism will help them reach their goals. Research shows, however, that the opposite is true. Self-compassion is more effective for personal improvement, especially when facing failure. _ , try to be kind and gentle with yourself, just as you would with a loved one.
Resolutions are often phrased as definitive goals. I will exercise daily. I will kick desserts. . But setting all-or-nothing goals can lead to all-or-nothing decisions that one gives up when faced with challenges. In contrast, intentions focus more on your values than specific actions. For example, the resolution "I will exercise daily" may become an intention of "I want to move my body because it feels good." This approach allows for more flexibility when unexpected stress arises.
Solve problems by overcoming barriers
If you are struggling to maintain your desired habits, there are evidence-based techniques available to help you. . This involves identifying the specific barriers that lead to your quitting something that you want to do. Perhaps you keep forgetting the new habit, or perhaps you don't understand how to do it. Whatever it is, identify the barrier and cope with it specifically.
A. Set all-or-nothing goals
B. Change your resolutions into intentions
C. One such skill is called missing links analysis
D. Setting specific behavioral goals can be effective
E. If you're persuaded to give up on your resolutions
F. Old habits tend to die hard, and new habits tend to die easy
G. When you are upset about yourself for not keeping resolutions
