When Canadian couple Edith Lemay and Sebastien Pelletier first noticed that their daughter Mia was having visual problems, she was just three years old. 

A few years after they first took her to see a specialist, Mia was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa (视网膜色素变性), a rare genetic disease that caused a loss or decline in vision over time. There's nothing they could really do, because there was currently no cure or effective treatment to slow down the progression of retinitis pigmentosa. 

Once they came to terms with the news, the couple focused their attention on helping their child to build the skills that she'd need to lead her way through life. When Mia's specialist suggested that they should assist her with "visual memories", Lemay realized that there was one truly incredible way that they could do just that for her. 

"I thought, ‘I'm not going to show her an elephant in a book. I'm going to take her to see a real elephant, '" she explains. "And I'm going to fill her visual memory with the best, most beautiful images I can. "

She and her husband soon began making plans to spend a year traveling around the globe with their kid. They thought there were great things to do at home but there's nothing better than traveling where they could feast their eyes on the wonderful scenery. 

After gathering up enough savings, they soon began their family journey with an in-depth itinerary (行程) that involved traveling to lots of places all over the world.

Winter sports were already popular in China a thousand years ago in the form of Bingxi (冰嬉), or play on ice. Bingxi as form of performance for the court began in the Song Dynasty and reached its peak during Qing. A Bingxi painting in the collection of the Palace Museum portrays scenes of Bingxi during the Qing Dynasty. A closer look at the painting will show that there are many  (similarity) between how ancient Chinese people enjoyed games on ice and modern day  (compete) events at the Winter Olympic Games.

What to Do when Working with Disliked Ones

In life, we may always work together with someone because of a mutual benefit. It sounds great, except for one thing: You don't like your cooperator because he is selfish. In fact, you don't have to like him, but you'd be smart to work with him. . 

The typical advice you may hear is to just do whatever business you need to do with them and move on.  And the biggest problem is that if you don't like someone, chances are that they know it, which will make them dislike you. Thus, it turns out to be an impossible strategy. 

So, if avoiding them is a losing strategy, what should you do?

 Maybe you think they are greedy or selfish. Then ask yourself this question: can you yourself be greedy or selfish? You really don't like that part of yourself, right? You may not like them because they remind you of something you don't like about yourself. 

Then working with people who you don't like can become much more interesting, because getting to know them, and accepting the parts of them you don't like, is actually getting to know yourself and accepting the parts of yourself you don't like. It means you use them to understand yourself better. What is it about them that you don't like?  This is a game, and you win by finding that hated behavior in yourself. 

Humans are very complex-we have both good and bad traits in ourselves. That's the key to sharing the suffering of others. .

A lot more animals glow under a special light than scientists previously thought. This ability to glow is known as fluorescence (荧光), which happens when light is absorbed as one wavelength and emitted as another wavelength. 

Travouillon, a scientist from Harvard, wondered why so many animals had this unusual quality, and he asked one key question: Is there a function behind the ability? To address the question, Travouillon and his team took a closer look at the life histories of the glowing mammals. 

The team discovered that the fluorescence was mainly found in light-colored areas of an animal's skin and fur. Then they looked at where the fluorescence was found in the animal's body. They compared that to the animal's diet and how the animals moved. They also checked whether the animal was nocturnal or diurnal, Travouillon explained. Animals that are nocturnal are most active at night, whereas animals that are diurnal are most active during the day. 

One finding was that fluorescence was more common among ground-dwelling, tree-dwelling and burrowing mammals compared to animals that live in water, Travouillon said. The team also found that having a fluorescent coat was more common among nocturnal animals compared to diurnal animals. One potential explanation for that fact is that having a fluorescent coat could help no cturnal animals become more visible to potential partners. 

"So, for example, with a species like a quoll that has white spots on its back, the fluorescence would simply brighten their spots, " Travouillon said. "In this way, they are more easily seen. Fluorescence might help members of a species find each other and perhaps recognize each other from a distance, " Travouillon added. 

On a closing note, Travouillon cautioned wildlife enthusiasts not to go searching for glowing critters with a UV light. That's because UV light can damage the animal's eyesight. Instead, if you want to look for animals in the dark, he recommended using a red light, since it isn't as bright. 

In Florida's Everglades, few species are more closely tied to this place's health than an endangered bird, the snail kite, which eats just one thing: snails. Over the last century, due to changing environments, these local snails have become hard to find, and the birds are dying out. But the number of snail kites has increased recently thanks to an unusual invasive (入侵的) snail, which is a pretty uncommon event. 

Snail kites got their name from their amazing flying ability. They were one of the last bird species discovered in the U. S. because of where they live, often hidden in the Everglades. Over the past century, as many of their living places became pretty dry and water stopped running through parts of the Everglades, the snail kite population fell rapidly. It was one of the first birds put on the endangered species list in the 1960s. And by 2007, fewer than 800 had remained. 

Right shortly after that, this invasive snail came in, and just started flourishing and getting into every wetland. Since then, the snail kite population has been slowly increasing. By last year's count, there are now more than 3, 000 snail kites. And, although it's early in the season, researchers are finding lots of nests with eggs and young birds. 

Efforts to restore (恢复) Florida's Everglades have also helped the snail kite, bringing back local plants and the flow of water. The restoration work has been in place for more than 30 years with a cost of more than $20 billion. But progress is slow. 

Though some scientists say the invasive snail may have saved the snail kite, Professor Robert Fletcher is feeling uneasy about the possible influence the species will have on the Everglades over the long term. He says, "What we should be thinking about is how to restore local snails to get those benefits rather than depending on this invasive species that can harm the ecosystem. The snails may already have a bad effect on some local plants, and a sign trouble may be showing soon. "

Wang Fang, a Suzhou native, has given her heart and soul to Kunqu Opera. Wang, who has twice won the Plum Performance Award—China's top award for theater and opera performances—started to learn the traditional art form in 1977. 

Born with a melodic voice, Wang loved to sing and dance when she was little. She performed frequently, and was recruited by the Suzhou Kunqu Opera Troupe (剧团) when she was in middle school. However, her parents refused the troupe's invitation, insisting that she should concentrate on her studies and not drop out of school. After members of the troupe visited the parents repeatedly and showed great sincerity, Wang's parents finally agreed. 

Learning the traditional art form was never easy. She started to learn how to pronounce words, sing them lyrically and make gestures gently. As an actress playing martial artists roles at first, she had to spend extra time practicing kungqu movements. Years later, Wang used the word "unimaginable" to describe how hard the days were when she first learned Kunqu. She was soaked in sweat when practicing movements in summer, while in winter she often had chilblains (冻疮) on her hands when training in shabby classrooms with broken windows. "But I was young and determined at the time. No matter how difficult, I always got up early the next morning to practice, " Wang recalls. 

Wang says she did not love Kunqu at first, but in her early 20s, when she watched the show Peony Pavilion performed by Zhang Jiqing, a master of the art form, it clicked. "I was shocked, " Wang says. "Her every movement was full of elegance and delicacy. Each of her lines and songs was perfect. I was overwhelmed (难以禁受) by the beauty of Kunqu for the first time in my life, and it has stayed with me since. " Now, Wang has herself become a master of Kunqu. Her performances have impressed generations of audiences and helped to promote the art form among young people.

You're overwhelmed（压垮）. That is a state where there is just too much on your plate. You have no idea how you will ever get it all done.  And it can lead to anxiety, unhealthy stress, and even burnout.

Here are three steps you can put into immediate action next time you feel overwhelmed.

Stop and breathe.

The first thing to do is stop. This may seem unreasonable when you hurry to get everything done. But to end the state of being overwhelmed, we first need to step out of the busyness.  And we end up running around and around in our own unproductiveness and panic. Start consciously breathing. As your breathing starts to slow, extend your breath. Bring your breath down deep into your stomach. Hold the inhale（吸气） for a few counts and then slowly release.

Stand up and get away from the situation that is causing the pressure and anxiety. It could be your desk, or your lounge room. If you can, go outside. If not, find a quiet space. You need to get some distance from the messiness. Walking away, even momentarily, often provides enough of a break to get some perspective. 

Refocus.

After returning to your place, take a few moments to think about the situation. As you do so, highlight the things that are adding fuel to your feeling of too much pressure. By taking the time to look at your priorities and time commitments, you will step out of the pressure, take care of your mental, emotional, and physical well-being, and give more energy to the tasks and projects that really matter.

B. Never stop moving forward.

C. Seek advice from people around you.

D. Then come back with a clearer mind.

How is it that a fly always seems to be buzzing around your food moments after you sit down for an outdoor meal?

The answer is practice. Or, more specifically: evolution（进化）. Flies and other insects have been on a multimillion-year journey of evolution, improving their ability to detect food. Being able to zero in on nutritious meals is a matter of life and death.

The family of flies that I study — the blowflies — are the buzzing ones that are usually a beautiful metallic blue, with bronze and green colors. They've perfected their ability to quickly sense the smells that naturally come off picnics and garbage cans. There is a lot of competition for a resource like an overflowing garbage can because of how nutritious garbage, with the meat rotting in it, is. But the blowflies can sense these smells long before their competitors or people can, and tend to show up to the scene first.

Sensing systems differ depending on the insect and species. The blowflies' main sensing organ is their antennae, two thin projections（凸起） from the head that are covered in tiny hairs. These fine hairs are made up of special cells that contain receptors（受体） for specific smells. Think about a batch of chocolate chip cookies fresh from the oven. You can detect their delicious smells because we humans have receptors on the surfaces of the cells that line the inside of our noses. These receptors send signals to the brain: yummy food ahead. They're detecting the sweet smell of sugar-based molecules, an energy-rich food source for us.

What's a "good" or a "bad" smell can differ depending on the animal doing the smelling. The attractive rotting meat stench（恶臭） that a fly finds delightful is perceived quite differently by a person passing by an unpleasant garbage can on a hot day. But any fly that can detect the useful smell signal, which means "nutritious fly food here", will have an advantage. Over time, the insects that have the receptors for those smells will have better survival rates and produce more generations.

Nostalgia（怀旧） is a powerful emotion that can be employed to create a strong emotional connection between a brand and its audience. By tapping into the fond memories and positive associations that people have with a particular brand, marketers can create a sense of familiarity and comfort that resonates（共鸣） with their audience. This emotional connection can then be used to drive engagement and loyalty, ultimately leading to increased sales.

Seeing some kids play outside with dolls, he sat down and joined them, reassuring them that everything was going to be okay. The kids were happy to have another playmate, regardless of his uniform. Impressed and grateful, Roper-Boswell took a video of the kind act and posted it on Facebook, where it's gained thousands of views from people living all over the country.

Fleming, who is celebrating his 15th year on the force, said he's always desired to do more than fine people for violating（违反） parking rules. "It's something I've always tried to do," he said about also looking out for the children. "When I got into this job, I knew there was something different, other than just writing tickets and being the ‘bad' person all the time. I figured if I could be that bright spot in someone's day, then that was all that mattered."
