How to listen in English exams
Listening is an important but difficult part for middle school students in English exams. The following suggestions may benefit you a lot.
Relax yourself.
Before listening, it's necessary to have a peaceful state of mind. If that doesn't work, drinking some water or washing your face with cold water may help you to some extent.
As soon as the listening starts, focus on it without thinking about anything else. While listening, you can also recall the related knowledge in common with the material concerned, such as the vocabulary about the subject or topic, which is beneficial to your better understanding.
Grasp the main idea.
Sometimes the monologue, dialogue or conversation you're listening to is a little bit longer than you expect. And it's normal that some unnecessary information is included. However, you don't need to understand it completely.
Ignore the new words.
Without doubt, there usually exist unfamiliar words in listening materials. In fact, it's almost impossible for you to know or understand all the words in the listening material sometimes. It's mistaken to waste much time on figuring them out while listening.
Develop the habit of taking notes.
In the course of listening, it's a good habit to write down the content and leave out the unimportant details. By taking notes, we can remind ourselves of the key points.
A.Concentrate on listening.
B.If you feel nervous or anxious, try taking a deep breath to calm yourself down.
C.Instead, just pay attention to the key points and general ideas.
D.What you need to do is turn a deaf ear to the new words.
E.Make a list of what you think is important while listening.

School isn't just a time to learn Maths, Science and other subjects. It is also a time to learn the skills you'll need to succeed in the real world.
One very important skill that can help a young person in their future is leadership. While some schools may allow more students to take turns to be class leaders, most schools allow only a few students to take on such roles.
The downside may be the sense of superiority(优越感)the class leaders have. These leaders may begin to feel that they have a right to give orders to their classmates to do the work rather than working as a team. In some cases, students may begin to think that they are above their fellow classmates in power and privilege(特权).These certainly aren't the expected qualities of a future leader.
One school in Hangzhou has recently been praised for introducing a new model of student leadership. It allows each student to work as a class leader. The teachers there created a lot of opportunities such as electing class librarians and group reading leaders. Parents of students at the school praised the new arrangement. When the news hit the Internet, people also agreed and encouraged more schools to follow it.
Of course, with this model, the focus can still be on "policing" and telling on classmates, rather than encouraging peers and promoting cooperation. The most effective student leadership programmers should teach such things as personaland group responsibility, teamwork, problem-solving creativity, goal-setting, and communication, As students, you should see leadership opportunities as a chance to learn important skills for your future.
(1)、What does the writer think of teaching students leadership at school?A、It is easy. B、It is difficult. C、It is necessary. When is the best time for us to enjoy the bright moon? Of course, it is Mid-Autumn Festival, one of the most important holidays in China. We look at the moon, eat mooncakes, and get together with our families. The tradition is thousands of years old.
The moon, the key part of the festival, is special to most Chinese people. We enjoy and admire it. We use the round and crescent moon (新月) to describe reunion and separation.
Our admiration of the moon dates back to ancient times. There is the legend of Chang'e flying to the moon the most famous story about the moon. Many Chinese poets connect the moon with homesickness. For example, "Beside my bed a pool of light. Is it hoarfrost (霜) on the ground?" from Jing Ye Si (Thoughts in the Silent Night)by Tang Dynasty poet Li Bai.
Today, the moon is still important to Chinese people. The Miao minority (少数民族) in Guizhou province has a special custom. On the night of Mid-Autumn Festival, young people dance under the moon to find their other half.
However, Western people see the moon differently. In some stories, the full moon is somewhat scary to people. The most well-known legend is about the werewolf (狼人). A werewolf usually looks like a human, but changes into a wolf-like creature (生物) when there is a full moon. Also, if someone is very excited or even crazy about something, others may joke, "It must be a full moon."

My son, Erick, is two and a half years older than my daughter, Anne. As young children, they were best friends. Anne admired her big brother and tried to keep up with him in every aspect. She cried when Erick started kindergarten. Erick in turn looked out for his little sister when she started school. They played together, usually with cars and toy drivers, but sometimes Barbie dolls would join in.
But when junior high and senior high school set in, adolescence(青春期) and sibling rivalry(同胞争宠) between them changed their once close relationship. They hardly acknowledged each other, even though they were in some of the same activities. They could hardly get along.
Once Anne was in college, things began to improve. Maybe it helped that they were at different schools. Both had grown up and the rivalry was less intense. At home during college breaks, they laughed and played together again. Slowly they were coming back together as friends.
College graduation came, and Erick moved out to begin his career. It was sad for all of us, especially for Anne.
Two years later, we all looked forward to Anne's college graduation. In a conversation about this one day, Erick brought up the subject of a graduation gift for Anne. My husband Rick and I had thought of upgrading some features of her car, since the car was pretty basic and several years old. Erick had a different idea. He knew Anne would go to graduate school in another state and wanted her to have a reliable car. His suggestion was to upgrade the gift to a new car. We couldn't believe our ears. This elder brother who didn't acknowledge his sister in high school wanted to surprise Anne with a new car at her college graduation!
We agreed with the suggestion after getting over our first shock at it.

Your culture is a huge part of who you are and the way you see the world. When you live in a place where your culture is the mainstream, you likely don't have to put much effort into preserving it — it's all around you! But what happens when younger generations lose contact with older generations? Here are several things you can do.
Each culture has its own clothing, music, visual art, religious beliefs, and technology that make it special. Members of your cultural community will be overjoyed to teach or talk about their hobbies, jobs, projects, and what they do for fun.
Attend or organize traditional cultural events. Your country, tribe, religious denomination(教派), or immigrant ethnic group almost certainly celebrates major holidays or cultural festivals., If you can't find any good events in your area, get some people together and organize your own.
Cook family recipes handed down through generations. It's never too late to whip up some recipes from your grandmother's cookbook! Traditional dishes play a big role in culture, with smells and tastes having powerful connections to memories. As you make noodles or bread, you're sure to think back to memories from your childhood or the holidays.
Spend time with other members of your cultural community. Most importantly, that's for ordinary meals and just conversation. Use these times to learn and keep alive the aspects of culture that are difficult to learn through books and museums, such as etiquette(礼仪), body language, and humor.
A. Learn about your culture's religious traditions.
B. Share your culture's characteristics with others.
C. Tell examples of the knowledge that would be lost.
D. Gather as a group not just for holidays and big events.
E. Travel to these events to get a broader viewpoint on your culture.
F. Just read an old recipe and you'll know how much kitchen tools have changed.
G. If you don t actively preserve your culture, you risk losing the customs that give life meaning.

An overall transformation is needed for the planet to adapt people's pursuit of well-being. A new study by an international team of researchers explores a Theorv of Plametan y Social Pedagogy as a driver of a transformative process based on a learning society.
The Theory of Planetary Social Pedagogy is a way of learning applicable to all soc ietal sectors. According to it, people, societies and the world are an interlinked, systemic body. Such a worldview can make life meaningful, increase people's experiences of belonging and inclusion, expand the scope of care, and help people identify their opportunities to influence.
In a time marked by crises, learning to be one with the world is increasingly essential. In many ways, our everyday lives are linked with all other life on Earth. According to Professor Arto O. Salonen of the University of Eastern Finland, the study's lead author, the most important reason behind the upgrading(升级) planetary crises is people's being separated from their surrounding reality.
He says, "As we try for a comprehensive sustainability transition(转变), we need increasingly powerful and more systemic interpretations of reality." The current strategy for a sustainable future emphasizes economic and technological progress, but that is not enough. Learning is needed, too. A learning society relies on changes in its citizens' values, beliefs and worldviews.
"How we become aware of our everyday connection to other people and nature at the level of our emotions, body and mind stands at the core of the sustainability transition," says Erkka Laininen, a co-author of the study. Having an experience of belonging to and being part of the world strengthens people's sense of meaningfulness and their agency needed in building a sustainable future.
The transformative power of a learning society can be a k ev factor in the green transformation going into all society, in which clttlzens' consumer behaviour and ways of living, moving and producing food and energy are organized in new ways. Conceptions of work and the economy can be reformed, too.
A sustainable future is not about life becoming more miserable — it's about life becoming richer and more meaningful as hope for the future grows stronger.
(1)、Why is Theory of Planetary Social Pedagogy mentioned?A、To stress learning to be one with the world. B、To suggest reforming citizens ways of living. C、To describe how the theory is being improved. D、To tell if a sustainable future is significant.(2)、What is the main reason for increasing global crises according to Professor Salonen?A、The planet is reaching its limits. B、Humans break away from the reality. C、Old ideas of well-being are being questioned. D、Progress in economy and technology is unbalanced.(3)、What can we conclude from the text?A、A sustainable future is based on a learning society. B、Humans, societies and the world were connected more. C、Ending the present strategy for future is needed. D、Global crises have resulted in wrong worldviews.(4)、How does the author support the theme of the text?A、 B、By making a comparison. C、By using researchers' arguments. D、By providing study processes. -

Sulphur-crested cockatoos(葵花凤头鹦鹉) are common in western Australia, where they normally live in wooded areas. But as forests have been cut down, cockatoos have gotten used to living near people. Scientists report that people in Sydney, Australia are in a battle with these birds.
Last year, scientists at the Max Planck Institute reported that the cockatoos had learned how to open the covers of trash bins for food. That's not an easy job. The cockatoos must lift the heavy cover with their beaks(喙) and then walk along, pushing the cover up until it falls over.
When scientists first began studying the cockatoos in 2018, only three areas in Sydney had cover-opening cockatoos. A year and a half later, cockatoos in 44 different areas knew the trick. This time the scientists decided to study further. They weren't just studying cockatoos. They were also studying humans.
The scientists spent weeks studying more than 3,200 trash bins in four different areas of Sydney. They wanted to see how many bins were protected and what methods were used.
In one area, over half the bins were protected. The most common way of protecting the bins was to put a brick or some other heavy objects on the cover. Some people put things like rubber snakes on the top of their bins. The scientists discovered that the humans were teaching each other tricks, too. In most neighborhoods, many people used the same cockatoσ-stopping methods as their neighbors.
The researchers say, "It's like a race between humans and cockatoos to learn new ways of doing things. Now many cockatoos have learned how to push heavy items off the bins. As a result, humans have figured out ways to attach the items to the top of their bins." The researchers describe the situation as a"human- wildlife conflict""We expect these conflicts to become more common as humans take over more areas that used to be wild. We'd better understand the animals we share our lives with, and be patient with them," they add.
(1)、What can we learn about sulphur erested eackatoos from the text?A、They like copying humans' behavior. B、They are highly intelligent birds. C、They are good at walking for long hours. D、They are newly found in Australia.(2)、What did the scientists find in their further research?A、How humans responded to the birds' trick. B、When the birds were able to win the battle. C、Why the birds in more areas did the trick. D、How the cockatoos learned to do the trick.(3)、What do the researchers mean in the last paragraph?A、Humans have better ability to learn. B、The birds intended to make humans angry C、There are different kinds of ways to open bins. D、Humans should change their attitudes to wildlife.(4)、Which of the following would be the best title for the text?A、How to Help"Homeless" Cockatoos B、A Human-Land Conflict in Australia C、Cockatoos Caused Humans a Terrible Problem D、A Battle for Bins between Cockatoos and Humans -

Heman Bekele, a 14-year-old student, became the Nicole of the 2023 3M Young Scientist Challenge, standing out among nine other finalists with his creative invention known as the Skin Cancer Treating Soap(肥皂). In recognition of his exceptional achievement, this ninth-grade teenager is set to receive a cash award of $25,000.
Bekele's revolutionary concept, presented through a brief two-minute video, centers on the development of a soap that is not only affordable, priced at less than $10 per bar, but also has the potential to reactivate(重新激活) dendritic cells — the body's natural defenders of the skin— to fight against skin cancer.
In Bekele's own words, "Curing cancer, one bar of soap at a time." His passion for biology and technology was the driving force behind this ingenious creation, and the 3M Young Scientist Challenge provided him with the perfect platform to showcase his visionary ideas.
Reflecting on his inspiration, Bekele shared that his childhood in Ethiopia played a significant role in shaping his creative thinking. Having witnessed people work tirelessly under the burning sun, he couldn't help but wonder how many were aware of the risks associated with prolonged sun exposure.
"I wanted to make my idea not only scientifically exceptional but also accessible to a broad audience," Bekele expressed during an interview with The Washington Post. To aid him in realizing his big plans, he received invaluable guidance from Deborah Isabelle, a product engineering specialist at 3M, who connected him with other scientists. Eventually, the path forward for Bekele's creation includes obtaining FDA approval.
During his presentation at the 3M global headquarters in Saint Paul, Minnesota, Bekele passionately articulated his vision of turning the soap into a"symbol of hope, accessibility, and a world where skin cancer treatment is within reach for all".
Over the coming five years, Bekele longs to perfect his invention and establish a non-profit organization dedicated to distributing his innovative creation to under-served communities, offering hope and a practical solution in the fight against skin cancer.

I was in Philadelphia for a conference when I saw an ad in the hotel. A nearby theater was showing a documentary (纪录片) about several local animal shelters that were helping to save abandoned dogs across the country. I love animals, and I felt an urge to go to this fundraising event. However, none of my co-workers would go with me, and I was worried about walking on the street alone at night.
I resigned myself to spending the evening in my hotel room, but as soon as I got back to my room I felt restless and bored. The theater where the event was taking place was only about five blocks from the hotel, and the area around the hotel didn't seem particularly dangerous. So, I decided to brave it. I gathered up my wallet and room key and set off.
It was already getting dark and the streets were nearly deserted. I managed to find the street the theater was on, but when I turned the corner, I stopped in shock. In front of the theater were a group of bikers — very big, tough-looking bikers.
I've known lots of motorcycle enthusiasts and most are nice people. However, in this case, I was a woman all alone, in a strange neighborhood, at night, and there were twenty or so very large men — all wearing insignia (徽章) that indicated they were in some sort of club — standing before me. Warning bells began to sound in my head, and my heart was pounding. Was I at the right theater? Had I misread the date of the event?
A sign outside the theater told me that I was in the right place on the right evening. Nevertheless, I wondered if I should rush back to my hotel instead of walking through that crowd of bikers. I finally decided that I would be safer inside the theater. Hopefully, the bikers would have gone away by the time the film was over.
注意:(1) 续写词数应为150个左右;(2) 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I hurried into the theater, only to find there were even more bikers inside.
When the film began, I realized that the bikers were an animal rescue group.
