For this year's Children's Day on June 1, Deng Mo and his wife drove their son to the city of Suzhou, about 100 kilometers from Shanghai, where the family lives.

If you just want to see giant pandas, we recommend you to go to Chengdu Panda Breeding and Research Base. It is the most easily accessible panda base. You can see pandas at different ages. This base is huge but usually crowded.

If you are looking for a deeper panda experience, you can join a panda volunteer program. Giant panda volunteer programs are available in three panda bases: Dujiangyan, Wolong, and Bifengxia. They take about 1 to 3 days or longer. Dujiangyan is the best place for a one-day program. If you want a less-crowded environment, consider Wolong and Bifengxia, though they require 2 or more days. Your work would include weighing and cleaning bamboo, making panda cakes, watching pandas being fed, and cleaning pandas' enclosures (围场). At the end of the program, you will receive a panda keeper certificate.

Giant pandas don't go into winter sleep. You can visit them in all four seasons. Spring and autumn are the best times to see pandas when they are most active and temperatures are most comfortable. If you visit between August and November, you will probably see lovely panda babies.

Giant pandas spend almost half their time sleeping. Grown-up giant pandas in captivity (圈养) usually eat twice a day: early in the morning and late in the afternoon. They usually sleep around noon, any time from around 10:00 a. m. to around 2:00 p. m. We recommend you to get to a panda base as early as possible, when it is less crowded and the pandas are at their most active.

Dujiangyan Irrigation (灌溉) System

Dujiangyan water conservancy (保护) project makes full use of local geographical conditions of high northwest and low southeast, according to the special natural feature of mountains and rivers and according to water potential to draw water without dam to irrigate by gravity. What is great is that it exists for more than 2,250 years, and it produces more and more benefits. After the completion of Dujiangyan Irrigation System, the Chengdu plain became a vast rich land. 

Two Kings Temple

Two Kings Temple is located in the Minjiang River right bank slope (斜坡) and it closes to Dujiangyan in the front. It was Emperor Temple originally in memory of the king of Shu and later, it was offered sacrifices to Li Bing and his son, renamed the "Chongde Temple". In the main hall, there is the statue of Li Bing and his son and there was water conservancy quotes, poet inscriptions (题词) and so on. 

Fulong Temple

Fulong Temple is located in the Lidui Park. It is said that Li Bing and his son were here to prevent floods by water control. So in the early years of the Northern Song Dynasty in order to honor Li Bing, it was named "Fulong Temple". In the middle of front hall there is Li Bing stone figure carved in the Eastern Han. 

Anlan Suspension Bridge

Many scientists believe our love of sugar may actually be an addiction. When we eat or drink sugary foods, the sugar enters our blood  affects the parts of our brain which make us feel good. Then the good feeling goes away,  (leave) us wanting more.

Our bodies are designed to survive on very little sugar. Early humans often had very little food, so our bodies learned to store sugar as fat. In this way, we had energy  (store) for when there was no food  (eat). Once the storage was insufficient, we  (face) great trouble. But today, most people have more than enough. So the very thing  once saved us may now be killing us.

So what is the  (solve)? It's obvious that we need to eat less sugar. The trouble is, in today's world, it's  (extreme) difficult to avoid. Some food producers even use sugar to replace taste in foods that are advertised as low  fat. So while the foods appear to be healthier, large amounts of sugar are often added.

Learning how to cook can be a fun process, especially food-making adventure with good friends at college.

For Huo Zhiyi, this year's Dragon Boat Festival was surely one to remember. Instead of having a holiday dinner at a restaurant, the 21-year-old junior student and her classmates from Shenyang Agricultural University cooked for themselves in a shared kitchen.

This new shared kitchen, which covers 340 square meters on the second floor of the university's First Dining Hall, including a 22-square-meter cooking area, opened early last month. Students can use cookware and appliances (electric equipment) such as pans, ovens, and freezers, and various stuffs, like cooking oil, salt, and sugar, for free-all provided by the university. All they have to prepare is the basic ingredients (食材), such as meat and fresh vegetables.

"The three-day holiday was too short for us to return to our hometowns, so we decided to spend the festival together on campus. We all felt bored of the dining halls and take-out food. The newly opened shared kitchen has given us a space to cook for ourselves." The shared kitchen has quickly gained popularity with students and it is hard to find an available stove, especially during meal times. "We had to book it a week in advance," Huo said. The six young students worked for nearly three hours in the kitchen to cook eight dishes. "It was not as easy as we thought," she said.

The time spent in cooking has helped them communicate and cooperate more. "Compared with unhealthy take-out food, most college students desire hometown-style dishes or their favorite specialties, but it's hard to find them in campus dining halls," said Yi Guangcheng, director of the First Dining Hall. "The shared kitchen can help make their wishes come true. Meanwhile, it provides an opportunity to develop friendship and enrich social life. Delicious food is always a good bridge of communication," he said.

In addition to providing more convenience for the students, the shared kitchen also focuses on education, according to Ge Pengyue, director of the university's food center. "It is a creative feature of the university in quality education. We hope students can learn the basic life skill of cooking before they step out into society."

Two Canadian teenagers, Faiz and Leo, have been taking on a series of wonderful challenges. Their most recent achievement was following the Lake Ontario coastline for 73 kilometers, walking from Toronto to Hamilton, Canada, in about 18 hours.

"We enjoy trying new things that are good for our bodies and minds. We like to overcome challenges like these. And we feel going on a long walk seems to be the purest form of challenge that you can have," Leo said.

With very little preparation, the two 16-year-olds began their journey at 6 am, starting in darkness and finishing before midnight. They took several breaks, stopping at benches with nice views along the way.

On their walk, one of the interesting things they came across was a cargo ship (货船) which was no longer used. "You'd be surprised by the things that you don't see when you' re driving and that you will see when you' re taking your time walking," said Leo.

However, the journey was not only a trial (考验) for bodies but also an important test of minds. There were moments of loneliness for the pair, requiring them to support each other along the way.

Around 70 km into the walk, they ran into a person on a bridge who appeared to be experiencing something painful.

"I wasn't sure what was going to happen me and Leo, we tried to talk him out of it and ended up calling the police, and the situation was eased and everyone was OK," Faiz said.

The walk is now long over but Faiz and Leo are not done challenging themselves, with plans to start a two-day 100 km walk in the near future.
