Our first welcome to the UK wasn't from the staff of Heathrow Airport or the coach driver who entered into our lives to take us to our new city and new home for the next three weeks. It was, in fact, the noisy and energetic seagulls full of songs that flew down to us. When we left from the plane's exit passage, we still could hear their loud and clear songs through the glasses. It was amazing that they lifted our spirits and cheered us up after our stupidly long and awful journey.

These seagulls welcomed us Chinese people into their home with open wings and if they could speak instead of merely squawk. I'm sure we would have struck up some bright and harmonious relationship. They liked to hover overhead around with childlike greetings they sang or just simply walk fearlessly close to our feet. Some of us saved bread our host family prepared in the lunchboxes for these friends. And lovely, we would like to share what we have for the rest of eternity.

But Julie, the mother of my host family, who then I stayed with, does not think so. Strangely as well, she could not give any reasons. The closed and squawk-proof double-glazing (window used to keep noise out) explains. Perhaps she prefers to sleep with her windows open but she always fails to do that, because those birds seemed to like staying up till next morning, wholly screaming for her on and on. And they decide to keep doing so every single night. Furthermore, every time she has to wash the marble floor of the gardens, Julie would look up around and swear to the droppings shortly followed by a smile on her face towards me and said. "They are friendly to you."

But stop thinking that she hates the creatures and never plans to have a change, because there is another side to her evident feelings towards the birds. We will do some shopping at weekends and every time there Julie doesn't forget to put a big bag of wild birdseed into her carriage which costs quite more than milks or juices for one week. I can see what it goes for since she refills the wild bird feeder before a big hurry to drive to work every morning and when working she knows what is happening back at home — seagulls are enjoying the seed and leaving for next morning.

I'm leaving soon and not likely. I guess, though I hope not, to get back to see my friends here in England in the future. I said I would miss all friends living here including the seagulls. And when Julie was refilling the feeder again, she said "They're nice but they are not my friends."

Beyond the Horizon

Oshima was sitting at the sea side but the beautiful site did not make her feel good. Her face was dull and gloomy. She was staring at the setting sun without an expression on her face.

But she was not an unhappy child like this always. Six months before, Oshima was a happy child who loved playing at the beach with her brother and sister. Her brother Mittsu used to make sandcastle and Oshima and her sister Osheen collected the sea shells. Her father always shouted, "Come home, it's late", but they would not listen. The seaside was like their second home. At house also, they were a happy family who always laughed and played and had no problems to bother for.

One day all of a sudden something terrible happened. A violent tsunami came and took the entire country in its grip. It was a huge natural disaster. Most of the houses were washed away. The cities and towns were flooded with water. Oshima's town was near the sea and so the tsunami flooded her town as well. Her house was washed and they lost all their belongings.

Her grandmother Midori cried and cried and was totally shocked. She has not seen such destruction in her whole life. They were homeless. Oshima wept and wept and complained that why a violent tsunami hit her city. She was very angry.

The government shifted them to a refugee (难民) camp where many families shared the living space. Helicopters dropped food packets and they had to stand in long queues even for drinking water. Their life had turned upside down. Oshima could see the sadness visible in her parents' eyes. Now she did not like the sea at all and always felt that the sea had broken her trust and was very disappointed with the waves. For her the sea was very cruel who had taken her beautiful house away.

The golden snub-nosed monkey is  unique species found only in the mountainous forests of central and southwestern China. These monkeys get their common names from their golden-orange fur and snub noses.

The golden snub-nosed monkey is a large primate (灵长类动物), with males (weigh) up to 25 kilos and females around 15 kilos. They have a thick coat of fur that helps them adapt  the cold, mountainous environment. Their diet  (consist) mainly of leaves, flowers and fruits. The monkey is also known for its playful nature, often  (see) swinging from branches and playing with each other.

Unfortunately, the golden snub-nosed monkey is facing numerous threats to its (survive). Habitat loss due to deforestation and agriculture has  (significant) reduced the monkeys' living space. Additionally, hunting for their fur and body parts poses a constant threat to these  (endanger) creatures.

In recent years, conversation efforts have been made to protect the golden snub-nosed monkey and its habitat. Many protected areas have been established in their range, including nature reserves and national parks,  provide safe shelters for the monkeys.

The golden snub-nosed monkey is not only a symbol of China's rich biodiversity, but an essential part of the ecosystem. Their conservation is, without doubt, of vital  (important).

When I suggested my 13-year-old try tennis, she quickly turned me down. "I'm not 1 , so stop trying to get me to do sports," Julianna said. I suggested it because some of my recent happiest memories were of playing ping-pong with her. Tennis seemed like a natural progression from ping-pong and a great way to2 some of her growing teen worries on a larger playing field. But my suggestion was always met with 3 .

The voice within can be your inside guidance system toward development and optimism. But sometimes, that inner dialogue also presents a critical voice that points out shortcomings, limits and concerns. .

●Identify negative thoughts.  So you must first learn how to identify these thoughts to break the bad cycle of negative thought patterns. It is important for you to write down any negative thought that may be coming to your mind. You may replace negative thoughts with healthy ones as you begin to change your way of thinking.

● If you want to live a happy and fulfilling life, it's vital to surround yourself with people who want to see you do good and support your highest self. Spend a lot of time together with friends who express healthy thoughts and a positive mindset, and then your own thought pattern can be positively influenced.

●Shift your mindset toward growth. A growth mindset is a belief that your talents will develop over time. A person with a growth mindset tends to be less likely to suffer mental health problems than someone with a fixed mindset. People with a fixed mindset tend to become stuck in their ways, with repetitive thoughts circling around their heads.  It can guide them toward happiness and success.

●Choose to respond rather than react. Often, when people feel touched, they react without thinking.  However, by choosing to respond mindfully rather than react, you are controlling your thoughts in a healthy way. So next time you notice a powerful thought coming up, take a moment to reflect before reacting.

As humans, we might believe that we are the smartest and perhaps the only creatures in the world capable of having feelings and subjective experience, but is this really the case? A new study finds that bumblebees (大黄蜂) like to play. They like to roll around small wooden balls with no apparent motivation — it likely makes them feel good.

Previous evidence suggests that bees have positive and negative emotion-like states usually when they are given food rewards to test their abilities. However, in an experiment of the new study, some researchers had trained bumblebees to roll balls into a target in exchange for a sweet treat. They noticed that sometimes bumblebees would roll the balls outside of the experiment area for no reward.

This observation gave rise to new questions: What are they doing? Why? Is this random or intentional?

To answer these questions, the researchers set up more experiments. In the latest experiment, they watched 45 bumblebees in an enclosed area where they could walk through a clear path to reach a feeding area, or they could go off the path into areas with wooden balls. They found the bumblebees went out of their way to sit on the balls or push them. Each rolled the balls between one and 117 times during the experiment.

The researchers say that because they did it repeatedly with no food payoff, it suggests that the ball rolling was rewarding.

"The behavior was voluntary," says study first-author Samadi Galpayage. "Bees have a reputation for being hard workers, but the prospect of bees engaging in something like play is really novel and exciting because it shows that bees may experience pleasure and don't only carry out duties that are strictly essential for immediate survival."

Galpayage adds, "Personally, I find this behavior fascinating because it tells us that bumblebees, like many other animals, are more than little robotic beings, but have a richer behavior and life than we would have previously thought."

At the end of 2019,I learned that Here After AI, whose goal is to let the living communicate with the dead, was looking for applicants of its new AI project. Interested in what it was promising, I applied to experiment the software on my very-much-alive parents.

At first, I thought it would be just a fun project to see what was technologically possible. Then their health condition added some urgency to the experiment. I was frightened that my parents might die since my father had been diagnosed with cancer and my mother was recently developing symptoms of early Alzheimer's disease, and that with the distance between us, I might never have the chance to say goodbye.

The first step was an interview. My parents were asked questions by a techician for hours-about everything from their earliest memories to what they believe will happen after they die. Whether through illness-generated concerns or a willingness to humor their daughter, my parents put up zero resistance. The company then took their responses and started to create the voice assistants. A few months later, my virtual parents arrived via email attachment.

When I communicated with them through the app on my phone, my hands were shaking. I hadn't seen my actual, real parents for six months. They told me personal stories I'd never heard. They gave me life advice and told me things about their childhoods, as well as my own. It was mesmerizing.

Personally, I have mixed feelings about my experiment. I'm glad to have my virtual parents. They've enabled me to learn new things about my parents, and it's comforting to think that those softwares will be there even when my parents aren't. On the other hand, I can't help but find it sad that it took a stranger interviewing my parents for me to properly appreciate the complex people they are. But I feel lucky to have had the chance to grasp that-and to still have the precious opportunity to spend more time with them and learn more about them, face to face, no technology involved.

Have you ever heard of "children of the stars"? It might sound mysterious, but the expression refers to children with autism(自闭症). World Autism Awareness Day falls on April.

Autism is a disorder with signs that appear within the first three years of life. The condition is believed to involve difficulties in social communication as well as limited, repetitive behaviors, interests, or activities.

 Many children with autism experience epilepsy (癫痫) due to differences in brain activity. Epilepsy among people with autism becomes even more common starting from teen years.

At present, the exact cause of autism remains unknown, but research indicates that it is likely a result of a mix of developmental, genetic, and environmental factors. If the first child in a family has autism, the chances of the second child also having autism are about 10 times higher than in families where the first child is not autistic.

Although autism is a lifelong condition, there are various ways available to help them. Agreements from others will make them feel proud, enabling them to communicate with others more effectively.

For those close to autism sufferers, it's useful to figure out what is acceptable and what is not. For children with autism, these may benefit them for a lifetime.

As China continues its way to higher-quality economic development, it is increasing its dependence on the Intelligent Economy, driven by innovation and new technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI).

While development of AI in the West began in the 1950s, China did not begin conducting its own AI research until the end of the 1970s. Despite its later start, China's AI research is among the most advanced in the world in some areas. China now ranks first in its number of AI research papers, AI patent (专利) applications and the scale of its AI industry and research.

The development of AI is now part of China's national strategy. In 2017, China released the New Generation Artificial Intelligence Development Plan, which set the goal of reaching global forefront in AI by 2030. China is also strengthening international cooperation in the development of AI, especially with the United States. As the world's two largest economies, development and competition between China and the United States in AI development is attracting global attention. China has a lot to learn from the United States in the depth and breadth of its AI research.

AI technology is having a positive impact on China in many fields. Technologies and products are  arising  in  intelligent  driving, smart homes  and smart cities,  and breakthroughs are being made in fields such as smart chips and general large language models. People are becoming used to AI-powered technologies, such as self-driving vehicles and aircraft, and contactless supermarkets.

Like elsewhere in the world, AI development also creates moral risks in China, and the  country  is  carrying  out  research  on  AI  morals  to  ensure  that  technological development remains in line with social morals.

AI presents a historic global opportunity, and China will continue to increase its investment in AI research and application and promote the integration ( 融 合 ) of AI technology into other industries. Doing so will speed the development of the Intelligent Economy.

Researchers working in the ancient city of Pompeii, Italy, have found two frescoes (a type of wall painting) in a large dining hall. The art has laid undisturbed beneath ash and pumice (a kind of rock that comes from volcanoes) for nearly 2,000 years. Pompeii was a Roman city in ancient Italy, until an eruption by Mount Vesuvius, a nearby volcano, in AD 79 buried it. The thick layer of ash and rock protected many of Pompeii's treasures from damage and thieves. Teams of archaeologists, experts who study ancient objects to help us understand history, are gradually uncovering its mysteries.

The team put a special kind of glue into the back of the frescoes to keep them from falling off the wall. A roof is being put up over the room too, to protect it from the weather. The paintings show figures from Greek stories, including Helen of Troy, the daughter of the god Zeus, and Cassandra, who could predict the future. The Romans admired Greek culture.

Experts say the style of the art is unusual for the time. The frescoes are painted on a black wall, and experts think the  colour was  chosen  to hide  soot,  a  black  powder produced by the oil-burning lamps used at the time. It also makes the frescoes stand out brightly. The floor of the dining room is a mosaic (马赛克) where patterns are created with small tiles (瓷砖). Researchers think the mosaic, which is white with a black border, contains a million tiles that would have reflected the sun up onto the paintings.

Archaeologists think they know who owned the building and paintings because they found the    initials "ARV" carved into a wall. Dr Sophie Hay told the BBC, "We know who ARV is: he's Aulus Rustius Verus. He's a politician. He's super-rich."

Though there have been many incredible finds in the Pompeii area in recent years, uncovering Pompeii is tricky, expensive and time-consuming. A third of the city is still buried, but it will stay that way for now. The hope is that technology will improve and future archaeologists will find better ways of digging up the remaining ruins.

Short-sightedness is thought to affect around one in three people in the UK. The World Health Organisation predicts that about half of the world's population will have myopia, or shortsightedness, by 2050.

Generally a childhood phenomenon, myopia happens when the eyeball grows too long from front to back, making it more oval-shaped (椭圆) than round, thus unable to see faraway things clearly.

While our first reaction is to blame the increased use of screens, experts believe the real reason is not that, exactly, but it's related: less time spent outdoors. Natural light is essential for healthy eye development, says Schwartz. Access to natural light stimulates dopamine (多巴胺), which helps normal growth and development of the eyeball. Indoor lighting doesn't do the trick. Ideally, kids should get at least two hours of natural light a day.

That said, our  increased  use  of screens  is  a  problem.  Most  screens  are  high contrast—like black text  on a white page, or light text on a dark background, says Schwartz. A 2018 study in Scientific Records found that looking at black text on white backgrounds compared to natural environments could lead to myopia. Close work, like reading and looking closely at screens, has also been shown to cause myopia.

Most people's eyesight settles in their teens, but some people get nearsighted later in life. Poor eyesight isn't the only downside; people with myopia are at a higher risk of developing eye issues as they age. That's why regular eye examinations are important.

Researchers are working on ways to slow down rising myopia rates. A clinical trial at Ohio State University found that eye-drops with a low dose of atropine (阿托品) can slow myopia in kids. There's also some early evidence that a type of contact lens (隐形 眼镜) called Peripheral Defocus lenses might stop nearsightedness from worsening.

You can also reduce eye tiredness by making a few simple lifestyle changes, such as reading or working in good light, choosing non-glare screens for your computer or TV and taking frequent breaks.

However, besides these apps, here are some ways to help you learn a new language:

⒈Be a child, watch cartoons

One of the most common advice  for  language  learners  is  to  watch  children's cartoons, which can be found on YOUKU. These cartoons are often made up of basic phrases and words that one would learn at beginner's level.

⒉Turn the volume (音量) up

If watching cartoons is not your cup of tea, fear not, for there is the alternative of listening to podcasts (播客) and songs. Not only can you pick up phrases and idioms, but you can also develop your appreciation for the culture.

⒊Let the words flow

Talking to wait staff at native restaurants can help with your language skills. To avoid the risk of making mistake in public you can start by speaking to your pets. Tell them about your day. As you grow more confident, work up to a native speaker.

⒋Aforeign stamp

A commonly overlooked method is to keep a pen pal. Through the exchange of letters, you not only get to practise your writing skills but can also get a friend.

Over all, continuous practice is key to unlocking the door of mastery. No matter which approach you choose, it's important to revisit the language you are learning every day, even if it's just for 15 minutes.

Thick snowflakes swirled (旋转) around my car. Everything around me was white. The light was fading (变暗) as the sun set over the rocky peaks.

I was driving up a mountain pass on what was supposed to be a four-hour trip from Red River, New Mexico, to Durango, Colorado, I drove slowly along on a winding, unfamiliar road in a snowstorm. I was on my way to meet my friend Jane, who was in Durango. I was so excited about the weekend that I left without checking the weather.

Thirty minutes into my drive, the snow had started. Gentle snow at first. I thought about turning around. But it hardly looked threatening, so I continued. Now I regretted that decision. But it was too late. The road was too narrow and icy for me to turn around. The snow was bad, getting worse. The only way out was forward, higher and higher into the mountains. The last bit of sunlight disappeared, and I couldn't see anything beyond the few feet lighted by my headlights.

My cell phone had lost service as soon as I'd entered the mountain. I couldn't call for help. The clothes were in my luggage. Maybe I could find a place to pull over and wear more clothes until morning. Would that be enough to keep me warm all night? How long would it take for someone to find me? "Everything will be fine," I whispered.

Then I noticed a pair of lights seemed to glow dimly (朦胧地) through the snowstorm. I opened my eyes wide hard and then looked ahead. There they were. Tail-lights! There was a car in front of me! At least someone was here with me. Focus on the lights, I told myself, not your fear. I followed my guide for at least another half hour as we continued to pass the mountain.

Our Wonderful Club Culture Festival

To(provide, varied school life), our school held the first Club Culture Festival last week on campus. 

Starting from January 5th, the week-long festival, whose theme was " Varied Life", presented our campus culture. The literary society recommended many good books,(encourage, pleasure, reading). The most thrilling experience came from the Chinese kung fu club. The club members, (performance), which won loud applause. 

Through this festival, not only(pass on, culture), but(school life, enrich). And we all enjoyed it.

Thanks to a series of protection(measure), the Dabry's sturgeon(达氏鲟), an endangered species under China's first-class national protection, can now be spotted again in the Yangtze River.

The Dabry's sturgeon is also known as the Yangtze sturgeon, (name) after its habitat ,the upper Yangtze River. Since 2000, it had lost its natural ability to reproducea result of over fishing and water pollution, among other factors. The International Union for Conservation of Nature declared the species extinct in the wild in July 2022.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, underwater cameras have recently shot the natural spawning (产卵) of the Yangtze sturgeon, (indicate) that mature individuals in the artificial Yangtze sturgeon population have the ability to reproduce in the wild.

Overfishing was once a serious challenge, endangered the Yangtze sturgeon and other fish species in the Yangtze River. (recover) the biodiversity along the river, China(carry) out a full fishing ban (禁令) in 332 conservation areas of the Yangtze River basin in January 2020.

On Oct. 11, hundreds of runners competed in a cross-country race in Minnesota. Melanie Bailey should have1 the course earlier than she did. Her 2 came because she was carrying a3 across the finish line.

Learning anything by sitting in the comfort of your own home can be very easy and at the same time, there will not be any pressure to complete some tasks or anything like that.Then there are many ways to learn it comfortably by sitting at your home.

Watch English movies and shows. Watching English movies can help you a lot in improving your spoken English skills. Observe the expressions of characters, which is an excellent way to improve your English conversations in daily life.Observe them when they speak every single word. This will help to improve your vocabulary. 

Record your voice. Recording your voice can be an easy way to understand how you speak. This method can help you in understanding your accent (口音) and your pronunciation. You will be able to understand your mistakes when you speak. Then you can correct them. It may sound uncomfortable at the beginning..
