The biggest criticism(批评) of social networking is that our young people are losing their offline friends to online friends. In fact there is a lot of research that shows these criticisms are generally unfounded. Research by the Pew Internet and American Life Project found that people are not replacing offline friends with online companions but are using them to support their offline relationships.

 However, there is one part of social networking that is deeply worrying. We find ourselves in a hyper-connected world where people access social media day and night, excited to make announcements about the tiniest details of their lives. Research is starting to show that this culture is negatively affecting not our friendships but our character.

 Professor Larry Rosen, in his book iDisorder, says that young people who overuse social networking sites can become vain, aggressive. But perhaps an even more disturbing effect is that one of our most basic emotions seems to be disappearing- empathy. This is the emotion that bonds us together; it allows us to see the world from our friends' points of view. Without it, we are far less able to connect and form meaningful adult relationships.

 Sherry Turkle, a professor of Social Studies of Science and Technology at MIT, suggests that people are no longer comfortable being alone. This is something confirmed by a study where 200 university students were asked to go without social media for 24 hours. Many admitted an addiction to their online social network; most complained that they felt cut off from their family and friends. But being alone is a time, Turkle argues, when we self-reflect and get in touch with who we really are. It is only when we do this that we can make meaningful friendships with others. She believes, as is the title of her book, that we are simply "Alone Together".

 These potential changes in our characters are rather disturbing. If nothing is done, our young people could well be in trouble. Therefore, suggestions about ways to encourage our young people to avoid the problems of social networking should be made, so they can develop the kinds of friendships that are required to grow into well-adjusted and happy adults.

Scientists at Purdue University created the world's whitest paint — a discovery that not only adds yet another choice to the "which white should we paint this wall" dilemma, but also might help the climate crisis.

The paint was developed by Purdue mechanical engineering professor Xiulin Ruan and his team. It works through a passive cooling technology that offers great promises to reduce space cooling cost and global warming. "When we started this project seven years ago, we had saving energy and fighting climate change in mind," Ruan said in a podcast (播客) episode of This Is Purdue. They wanted to create a paint that would reflect sunlight away from a building, dramatically decreasing the need for air conditioning.

Heating, cooling, and lighting account for 28 percent of the world's total greenhouse gas emissions. And overusing air conditioning can overwhelm a city's power grid and cause blackouts (停电). In a Queens blackout in 2006, 175,000 people were left without power, which lead to 40 deaths. This paint could effectively be an alternative to air conditioners in some places.

The paint reflects 98.1%of solar radiation while also giving out infrared (红外线的) heat. Because the paint takes in less heat from the sun than it gives out, a surface coated with this paint is cooled below the surrounding temperature without using power. Covering a roof area of 1,000 square feet with the paint could create 10 kilowatts ofcooling power, the researchers found."That's more powerful than the air conditioners used by most houses,"Ruan told This Is Purdue.

You can't buy the paint just yet, but researchers are partnering with a company to put the paint on the market. While individual action to fight elimate change can help save our planet, it's important to note that the vast majority of the world's greenhouse gas emissions can be traced back to 100companies. Maybe we can douse(浇) those companies with this white paint, too — it could be worth a shot.

In the past year, I had an unforgettable experience of learning tai chi. Honestly speaking, I admitted that I (feel) hesitant at first but with time passing by, it really had a huge effect on me  (physical) and mentally. Not only were I deeply impressed by the moves that caught my imagination, such as "white crane spreading its wings" and "golden rooster standing on one leg", but also I  (inspire) to explore Chinese culture.

Creating the storyboard

The first step is to write down the main ideas of the story.  Based on the storyboard, the art department creates the first draft for the characters, their clothing and emotions, and the design sets.

Making characters using 3D modelling

A special computer program is used to create 3D shapes of the characters, sets and props—this is called modelling. The decorations of the sets and props are created using a software. Special equipment is used to record points on these shapes.  With the aid of the software programme, the 3D shape is recreated.

Creating the movements

The layout crew (摄影构图组) decide how these characters should move and then the cartoonists take over. They use 3D software to create the movements of each character, the skeleton's (骨架) movements, facial expressions and more, between key frames (帧) in the story. 

Dressing up for the show

 The skin and hair for the characters, their costumes as well as special lighting effects such as shadows, shining reflections are also created.

Remember too, that the movements have to be smooth! The computers draw each frame one by one, with each frame slightly different from the previous one. Each frame takes 5-6 hours to create—imagine how much computing power and time it will take to create 24 frames per second of a 2-hour film!

A recent study shows that air cooling is already responsible for 3.94% of yearly carbon emissions (排放物) worldwide, which will only worsen as higher global temperatures continue to drive the growing need for air conditioning. Meanwhile, increased energy bills and a lack of gas supply are other significant concerns. At present, heating in the UK amounts to a third of our total carbon emissions from the burning of fossils to fuel our collective heating system. Climate change and energy issues call for serious efforts to counter these challenges.

Cookbooks tell us what foods were available during the period the books were written. If you see a lot of recipes for things that are preserved for pickles (腌菜), you know that you're looking at a time without refrigeration. In the late 1860s, many recipes started paying more attention to food bacteria concerns and healthy-seeming foods, reflecting society's growing knowledge of both subjects. Cookbooks show that meal planning changed in the 1930s, when refrigerators became more common in American homes.

Early cookbooks were also lifestyle guides. So, there were not only some recipes for food, but recipes for a cleaning solvent (溶剂) or what to do when your child were poisoned, how to clean, and how to get spots out.

Cookbooks became more diversified and regional after the Civil War. Southern writers, and some Northern writers, began publishing cookbooks in an attempt to memorialize, and beautify, the American South. They became very successful and they really helped to develop a sense of what southern hospitality was. Community cookbooks, edited by more than one person, often as a fundraiser or for charity, ultimately provide insight into what middle-class Americans were eating at a given time, as well as a statement about neighborhoods and groups.

Cookbooks, however, sort of stop being a comprehensive reflection of society now. You really have to think about the publishing world and who it is, where it is, and what it wants. The publishing world doesn't necessarily have the goal of representing the truth of Americans because it wants to make money. But publishing's control of the storytelling has loosened. Social media and food blogs have led to the freedom of conversations around food, recipes and cooking, giving consumers more power.

But that doesn't mean that the golden age of cookbooks is over. Cookbooks are still one of the most popular books out there and are purchased regularly. They're very good to give as gifts. They're very, very popular because they're sort of neutral (中立的). And everyone loves a cookbook, especially with beautiful pages.

What do you feel passionate? What do you love (besides your family, children, and friends)? Our passion often leads us to our purpose in life. For example, am absolutely passionate about helping people work through blocks or barriers such as hurt, guilt, shame, and self-doubt in order to experience the freedom to be authentically who they are.

I believe when you find your passion, you will experience freedom, happiness and, ultimately, less anxiety and more peace. It sounds so simple. However, many people do not really know what they are passionate about because they have lost a sense of who they are. We have spent so much time trying to please others or creating stories about why we can't do something. What if you could change this? How would your life be different?

Identify and write down the areas you love. Technology, gardening, helping others, inner design, leadership, finances, health, fitness, writing, photography, art, managing projects, and the list goes on.

Look at your thoughts around placing more emphasis on the area where you pursue either personally or professionally. What are you telling yourself? I'm not good enough. I don't have the time or money. Whatever it is, work on deleting this from your thoughts and replacing them with the opposite statement.

Create more time in your calendar or research what add it information or resources you might need to integrate this more in your life. Maybe it's getting a coach or instructor to help keep you on track, reduce your fears and work on your limiting conversations. Set goals and make them happen.

Living out your purpose may mean a different job or it may mean focusing your time differently or making your passion more of a priority in your life. We all matter and have a purpose. It's never too late to create what you want.

This quote by Bob Proctor summarizes what this all means, "Your purpose explains what you are doing with your life. Your vision explains how you are living your purpose. Your goals enable you to realize your vision."

People from East Asia tend to have more difficulty than those from Europe in distinguishing facial expressions and a new report published online in Current Biology explains why

Rachael Jack, University of Glasgow researcher, said that rather than scanning evenly (均匀的) across a face as Westerners do, Easterners fix their attention on the eyes.

"We show that Easterners and Westerners look at different face features to read facial expressions," Jack said. "Westerners look at the eyes and the mouth in equal measure, whereas Easterners favor the eyes and neglect (忽略) the mouth."

According to Jack and her colleagues, the discovery shows that human communication of emotion is more complex than previously believed. As a result, facial expressions that had been considered universally recognizable cannot be used to reliably convey emotion in cross-cultural situations.

The researchers studied cultural differences in the recognition of facial expressions by recording the eye movements of 13 Western Caucasian and 13 East Asian people while they observed pictures of expressive faces and put them into categories: happy, sad, surprised, fearful, disgusted, angry, or neutral. They compared how accurately participants read those facial expressions using their particular eye movement strategies.

It turned out that Easterners focused much greater attention on the eyes and made significantly more errors than did Westerners. "The cultural difference in eye movements that they show is probably a reflection of cultural difference in facial expressions," Jack said. "Our data suggest that whereas Westerners use the whole face to convey emotion, Easterners use the eyes more and mouth less."

In short, the data show that facial expressions are not universal signals of human emotion. From here on, examining how cultural factors have diversified these basic social skills will help our understanding of human emotion. Otherwise, when it comes to communicating emotions across cultures, Easterners and Westerners will find themselves lost in translation.

On a sunny Friday morning, Mr. Stone, the Grade 4 head teacher, walked into the classroom with a new student following him. She was a lively girl from Mexico, and her red mushroom hair cut immediately drew everyone's eyes. With a welcoming smile, Mr. Stone gestured for her to sit beside Mike, a student known for teasing others.
