Today, Tai Chi continues to spread through education and cultural exchange. Practitioners and instructors are adapting it for younger (generation) , ensuring its preservation while promoting health, cultural understanding, and tourism.

When it comes to protecting and dispensing (分发) food, the right package can greatly reduce waste. Here are a few examples.

Packaging keeps the meat fresh.

We throw away a fifth of the beef we buy — the equivalent (等量) of 8 million cows each year — often because it goes bad before we cook it. The solution? Case-ready packaging can lengthen that shelf life to up to 21 days. If the meat you bought isn't going to be eaten within a few days, case-ready packaging is the better choice for the environment.

This dairy waste can be avoided with packaging technology such as Tetra Pak (利乐包装纸盒), which is commonly used in Europe and Asia to keep milk from spoiling, even without refrigeration. Recycled or not, Tetra Pak is a good environmental bet because it can lengthen the shelf life of milk up to nine months. Once again, the environmental benefit of the food-protection technology outweighs the harmful impact of the packaging itself.

One example of waste-reducing packaging is the concept project shown from designer Drew Stanley. He designed a peanut butter jar made of a soft material which can be turned inside out and scraped (刮掉) clean, avoiding sticky food sticking to your fingers.

The pilot program was launched on Sunday on the Daxing Airport Express subway line to spare passengers the trouble of swiping a card (刷卡) or scanning a QR code to catch a train , the Beijing Municipal Commission of Transport said.

Any commuter aged 14 and above can first register the print of either palm through a simple, automated process and provide relevant information to authorize the payment gateway of WeChat, a popular messaging app in China. Once the palm print is registered, a commuter can scan the palm at any automated ticket gate to pass through. The fare is automatically paid after exit. Besides, the registration is a one-time process and doesn't require renewal.

"Passengers can just place a palm above the scanning machine when entering or exiting a subway station. The ticket gate will open if the palm scan matches the palm print registered voluntarily," said Zhang Li, an expert at the Beijing Metro Network Control Center.

The biometric method combines the use of palm print and vein mapping, which are different for every individual. Therefore, data masking and encryption (加密) technologies have been applied to protect user information.

Xin Jianhua, general manager of the public service center at WeChat Pay, said palm scans can be gradually used in offices, schools, gyms and restaurants, as it requires no contact and is therefore safer and more efficient. "Currently, it is very useful for the elderly and those who have physical limitations," he said. "Use of biometric data allows passengers to take subway trains if they do not have cash or when they forget their subway cards," he added.

Yet despite my enthusiasm, learning Chinese hadn't even entered my mind. This wasn't ignorance or laziness, but rather fright at the thought of attempting to learn what is regarded as the most difficult language in the world. In my mind, the Chinese language was the privilege of the highly intelligent.

However, after a year in China I began to feel uncomfortable with how many Chinese people could speak English and yet I couldn't even speak the most basic Chinese. With these factors in mind and a thirst for a new challenge I determined to begin my language journey.

In the two years since starting to learn I have made measurable progress. I found it less difficult than thought. When speaking to native Chinese speakers in Chinese they almost always understand me, I have also not found it too difficult to remember characters and I am now even able to write over +00 characters. I find studying the language relaxing and rewarding.

In spite of my progress, it has still been the challenge that has taken a lot of hard work and commitment. The thing I find most discouraging is listening since native speakers talk at such a speed, I can't always understand what's been said, but my weekly online language exchanges help with this. Furthermore, there is a long way to go before I reach my goal of fluency. The key to progress is to be patient and persistent.

My biggest harvest from learning Chinese is that it's not only reachable but can also be enjoyable. Learning Chinese not only helped me in day-to-day life, but deepened my cultural understanding of such a diverse and interesting country. Now my only regret is that I didn't start earlier.
