George had his eye on a scoring record. He took a deep breath as he stood in the doorway, looking in at the basketball court. The gym was old and small, but it held a long history. Maybe today I'll make history, George thought.
His basketball league was celebrating. Today's championship game marked its 50th anniversary(周年) since the League's first championship.
George looked over the brochure for the anniversary. It listed the winners of each championship game and the top scorers. He stopped suddenly when he read the name of the top scorer from a game 30 years before. He quickly went through the rest of the list. "Look!" he said to his teammate David, showing him the brochure. "You see who has the all-time record? My dad! He never told me that."
"24 points," David said. "That's awesome!"
George's best record was 19 points. He was the Badgers' top scorer. "It seems that my dad never showed off something like that," George said.
When his parents arrived, George brought the brochure over to them. His dad laughed. "I didn't miss a shot in that game. But look at the score. I would have traded every shot for a win," he said with regret. George hadn't noticed that his dad's team had lost the game just by one point. "That was a great group of teammates," his dad added. "You have great teammates in the Badgers, too."
As George warmed up, he was still digesting his father's words. "This will be a struggle every second," the coach emphasized before they got on court to play. "I want to see tough defense, sharp passing, and, above all, smart play as a team."
George was confident he could lead the Badgers to victory, just as he did in their previous games against the Lions. And he played really hard. As the game neared its end, George had already scored 23 points. Another basket would break his father's scoring record.

Whether playing tricks or holding funcrals in the wild, crows have surprised the public with their unexpected capabilities. But their"intelligence" knows no bounds. A new study published in Current Biology revealed for the first time that crows can use statistical logic to solve problems.
Crows have a large brain for their size and a particularly noticeable forebrain, associated with statistical and analytical reasoning in humans. "In our lab, crows have shown complicated numerical competence and careful consideration during decision-making," said Dr. Melissa Johnston, a fellow at the University of Tübingen. In her recent work, Johnston and her team pushed these abilities to a new extreme, testing statistical reasoning.
In the experiment, two crows were first trained to peck (啄) at various images on touchscreens to earn food treats; and gradually they had to choose between two of these images, each corresponding to a different reward probability. "Crows were tasked with learning rather abstract quantities and then applying that combination of information in a reward maximizing way," Johnston detailed. Over 10 days of training and 5,000 trials, the two crows managed to pick the higher probability of reward, showing their ability to use statistical inference. To researchers' much surprise, even after a month without training, the crows still perform well every time.
Statistical reasoning involves using limited information about a situation to draw conclusions and make decisions. People unknowingly use such cognitive ability every day. When we select cafes for social meetups, our brains automatically weigh collected statistics from past observations and favor the one more capable of meeting needs. Similarly, crows remembered and analyzed the connections between the images and the reward probabilities to make themselves get the most treats possible.
Crows once symbolized misfortune and death, causing them disliked even killed by people. Actually, they are among the few animals to adapt to urbanization successfully due to underestimated intelligence. "I think these studies do help change public views and improve our relationship with these lovely animals," Johnston stated.

In surveys over the past couple of years, Gallup researchers have found only about a third of U. S. workers feel engaged with their jobs. It's a concern for companies and the economy. Fortunately, researchers have identified a simple solution: Recognize your employees' achievements.
Across a number of industries, employees having high-quality recognition on the job were 45% less likely to have left that job between 2022 and 2024. "Imagine how demoralizing it would be if you' re doing things at work that nobody sees and you feel like nobody cares about," says Martin senior director at Workhuman, which tracked the career paths of more than 3,400 workers over two years.
When it comes to recognition, people feel less lonely when their contributions are praised, which in turn keeps them from seeking work elsewhere. The survey asked respondents if they felt stressed th previous day. Those who said they felt recognized on the job reported lower levels of stress than those who said they were not.
Another finding emerging from the surveys is that high-quality feedback can fuel profession development. That was Andy Hernandez's experience. He was working in car financing in Greenvill trying to figure out how to get ahead, when he decided to learn Excel to use it at work. He beg pitching ideas using his newly acquired skills. Managers liked what he was doing and told him as mu"It motivates me to know that all this extra stuff I'm doing gets recognized; it's also helping me sh( that I'm ready for the next step," he says. He rose through the ranks, eventually becoming a team lea He says he looked for opportunities to show appreciation for his team.
There are general differences when it comes to the desire for feedback, Gallup found in 2(Younger workers, who feel less attached to their workplaces than their parents, have a big expectation of appreciation. Fortunately for them, company leaders are also increasingly recognize the importance of praise in the workplace. In 2024, Workhuman found 42% of senior leaders report their organizations value employee recognition, up from 28% in 2022.

Sanding on the shore of a lake, I can't help but marvel at the tens or hundreds of thousands of small rocks that surround my boots. They were all created from hard surfaces, their edges softening over time.
And I wonder, can we learn from a pile of rocks?
Even the tallest mountains have worn down; none are as tall as they were 1,000 years ago. And much like a rock, I' ve found my attitude has softened and my desire to better understand others has expanded with each trip around the sun.
Once I too was a sharp rock covered in point y edges. Today, after decades of the waters of life coursing over me, my edges are softer and more understanding. I'm less likely to judge and more interested in learning how we can exist together.
But I'm not a rock. I'm a human-being filled with all the drama built into my DNA.
Two years ago, while traveling in the Pacific Northwest, I watched a restaurant owner ask a guy to leave for not falling in line with the rules. Not forceful and net rude. On the door read a sign:"Please wear a mask before entering our restaurant. We don't like it either, but let's all do what we can." But the guy tried to argue about the note.
I sat watching, understanding both sides. I' ve been this guy before, using my youthful edges to chip away at the world. What I lost, however, was the ability to grow by looking through others' eyes, and thus the possibility of finding content and success.
You can fit more rounded rocks in a jar than those with sharp edges. The former look for ways to adjust and make room for others; the latter never give an inch to accommodate others. Time, like the waters rolling against once sharp stones, changes us by washing away our resistance to seeing the world from another's point of view.
I placed a rounded stone into my pocket. Mother Nature is holding class again.
(1)、What does the author compare the rocks to?A、People with varied personalities. B、DNA unique to each person. C、Challenges that we come across. D、Our abilities that grows with time.(2)、What caused the argument in the restaurant?A、Lack of clarity in the sign. B、The owner's inappropriate attitude. C、Demanding restaurant requests. D、The guy's failing to obey the rules.(3)、Which best describes the author's attitude toward the world when he was young?A、Respectful. B、Aggressive. C、Ambiguous. D、Tolerant.(4)、What does the author try to convey through this text?A、We should adjust ourselves to new conditions. B、Be brave when in the face of difficulties in life. C、It's necessary to obey the rules in public spaces. D、Being open and understanding brings satisfaction. -

"Mom, I don't think this costume is right, "I said. "Maybe the makeup will add something, "Mom replied hopefully.
Somehow Mom had convinced me to play the Fish Footman in Alice in Wonderland. I can't say it's been the time of my life
"What if I forget my lines?"I hesitated.
"Oh Riley, is that what you're afraid of?I know you've been rehearsing for two months, you were the first off-book in your scene, and I couldn't be prouder of you. "Mom said, kneeling down and hugging me.
The next day we pulled into the parking lot, and I stepped out of the car, wearing the questionable costume. I shrank inside myself, but Mom pulled me toward the makeup room. When the makeup was done, I looked at myself in the mirror. My jaw dropped.
"Mom!I can't go onstage like this!"I cried.
"Why not?"
"I'd be a laughing stock(笑柄)!"
"Riley, look around you! You're not the only one in an odd costume. "
"What if we just sneak out?No one will miss me. "I whispered.
Mom's lips disappeared into a thin line, and I knew I had gone too far. "Riley, I'm going to watch you go out on that stage tonight. And that's the end of it. "Then mom disappeared into the audience. I sat there, alone and bored, as the play began and the curtain rose on.
The two boys dressed as Two of Clubs(梅花2)near me chatted casually about this and that. Suddenly, they asked, "You're awfully quiet. Is this your first show?"I tried to respond, but my voice caught in my throat and refused to escape. I coughed and nearly yelled, "YES!" The Ace of Diamonds(方块 A)sitting nearby laughed. "The audience will certainly hear you if you talk that loud. But you might have to clear your throat first, "she chuckled. I gave them a weak smile.
"Don't worry about us, "the Ace said. "We're only teasing. "
"Yeah, "the Two said. "When you've done as many shows as we have, projecting will be second nature to you. "

What will you do if you can't eat everything bought in the canteen(食堂)? According to a survey, what students waste every year could feed over 10 million people.
According to Xinhua News Agency, the food wasted by Chinese people is about 50 million tons of grain every year, which could feed 200 million people.
Food waste, which has become a global issue, serves as a mirror that reflects various cultural and social issues in different countries. In the west, for instance, consumerism, the belief that it's good to use a lot of goods and services, is often to blame for food waste. Chinese people are well known for being hospitable and generous. Many even feel that they lose face if their guests have eaten all the food. On campus, a generation of single children is less aware of the food waste issue. Students nowadays are well protected by their families and hardly have any concept of how much toil (辛劳) others go through in order to provide them with the food they eat.
There are 925 million hungry people in the world. They don't have enough food to eat. And farmers work very hard to grow the crops. It's also important that everyone thinks about how they can do their bit to reduce food waste. Recently a campaign against food waste launched on line in China might make you think twice about being so wasteful.
A. Students waste is extremely serious.
B. So we shouldn't waste our food.
C. Most of us would simply throw away any leftover food.
D. Students can never realize the serious food waste situation.
E. But canteen waste is merely the tip of the iceberg.
F. China, in turn, features its own eating culture.
G. To reduce food waste is a big task, and it needs time.

The periodic table of elements is a common sight in classrooms, campus hallways and libraries. The mode periodic table arranges the elements by their atomic numbers and periodic properties(周期性). Several scientists worked over a century to assemble the elements into this format.
In 1789,French chemist Antoine Lavoisiertried grouping the elements as metals and nonmetals. Forty years later,German physicist Johann Wolfgang Dobereiner observed similarities in physical and chemical properties of certain elements. He arranged them in groups of three in increasing order of atomic weight and called them triads, observing that some properties of the middle element, such as atomic weight and density, approximated the average value of these properties in the other two in each triad.
A breakthrough came with the pu blication of a revised list of elements and their atomic masses at the first international conference of chemistry in Karlsruhe,Germany,in 1860. They concluded hydrogen would be assigned the atomic weight of 1 and that the atomic weight of other elements would be decided by comparison with hydrogen. For example, carbon, being 12 times heavier than hydrogen, would have an atomic weight of 12.
In 1869,Russian chemist Dmitri Mendeleev created the framework that became the moder periodic table, leaving gaps for elements that were yet to be discovered. Mendeleev predicted the properties of some undiscovered elements and gave them names such as"eka-aluminum"for an element with properties similar to aluminum. Later "eka-aluminum"was discovered as gallium.
German chemist Lothar Meyer produced a version of the periodic table similar to Mendeleev's in 1870. He left gaps for undiscovered elements but never predicted their properties. The Royal Society of London awarded the Davy Medal in 1882 to both Mendeleev and Meyer. The later discovery of elements predicted by Mendeleev verified(证实)his predictions and his periodic table won universal recognition. In 1955 the 101st element was named mendelevium in his honor.
On UNESCO website,it wrote,"The Periodic Table of Chemical Elements is more than just a guide or catalogue of the entire known atoms in the universe;it is essentially a window on the universe, helping to expand our understanding of the world around us. "
(1)、What is the breakthrough at the conference in Germany?A、The atomic weight of carbon was calculated by scientists. B、A brand-new periodic table was published at the meeting. C、The elements in the table were rearranged by the properties. D、The atomic weight of elements was quantified based on hydrogen.(2)、How did Mendeleev contribute to the modem periodic table?A、He made it more complete. B、He made it easier to understand. Imagine a school where students are taught by the best teachers in every subject, regardless of location. Imagine a school where students could go on safe field trips to the Amazon rainforest or Everest base camp. Well, such schools are already being built: in virtual(虚拟的)reality.
Last year, Optima Academy Online, an all-virtual school, delivered courses that aim to improve the hearts and train the minds of young people. These courses are of different levels, attracting 170 full-time students from all over Florida. In the progress of home-schooling, students use headsets for about three hours a day for formal lessons and then do course work independently with digital check-ins.
Future versions(版本)of VR will doubtless be widely used in education, but the only questions are: for what purpose and at what speed? There are enough reasons to doubt whether VR schools represent the future of education. Sticking a child in their bedroom with a heavy VR headset fastened to their face and no physical social interaction with other kids will fill many of them and their parents with horror.
A recent report concluded that digital education could significantly improve the quality and equality of schooling systems. But if managed poorly, it could have the opposite effect, turning a digital divide into an educational one. There is growing evidence to suggest that is happening. In Mexico, only 24 percent of 15-year-old students in poor schools have access(使用)to a home computer for schoolwork compared with 87 percent in rich ones.
Used properly, technology can be great for enabling self-motivated students to access learning resources and connect with fellow students and teachers all over the world, says Beeban Kidron, a member of the UK's Digital Futures Commission. The trouble is that Edtech is too often seen as a shiny new toy that will solve all problems and save money rather than being viewed as a different way to learn, she adds.
(1)、What can we learn about Optima Academy Online?A、It has been widely accepted. B、It holds faraway outdoor field trips. C、It provides various online courses. D、It requires parents to help with check-ins.(2)、What does paragraph 3 focus on about VR in education?A、The development. B、The concerns. C、The advantages. D、The popularity.(3)、Students in Mexico are mentioned to show____.A、Mexican schooling quality has been improved B、local schooling systems are not fully developed C、technology access gaps may cause education inequality D、family backgrounds shape people's views on education(4)、What does Beeban Kidron think of digital education?A、It enriches learning. B、It's irreplaceable. C、It needs improving. D、It's undervalued. -

The text from my son said it all: "Dad, there's an article you were born to write that the world is finally ready for: Bring Back the Handkerchief!" As my son knows, there's no "bring back" for me. For me, the handkerchief never left.
My mother raised me with several fixed rules. One was that a gentleman always has a clean handkerchief in his right rear pocket, a piece of simple cotton, roughly 15 inches square and less than four inches when folded. I was a dutiful son, but as a child, I had been wondering what it was there for. After 60 years, my body weight now feels wrong if I'm heading out of the house with an empty back pocket.
I am sure this habit has sometimes struck friends but in polite company nobody comments on somebody else's business. Children like my kids think of my hankie ridiculously old-fashioned and they have their arguments. If you have to be prepared every day for allergies or a cold, why not choose a little packet of tissues, which saves you from that disgusting business of blowing your nose in the thing and then stuffing it back in your pants?
Point taken. But a handkerchief is more durable and has a far wider variety of uses. Can you grab the handle of a pot that's boiling over with a Kleenex? Or do you recall the cases of skinned knees and drippy noses that hankie wiped? In fact, my wife gave me several new handkerchiefs as gifts. Neither of us can count the number of times her eyes have welled up at a movie, or, as happens, she's needed to blow her nose.
Yet not even my mother could have anticipated the hankie's new role as an Essential Public Health Appliance. All of us have learnt how hard it is to follow advice from medical experts about not touching your face. Here is an answer. Use your hankie. In case of emergency, your handkerchief can become a makeshift DIY mask that can be pulled over your lower face like a robber entering a bank.
And it will certainly give me the chance to lift my chin and look at my adult children through one eye, asking in her good-hearted way, "What do you have to say now, smarty-pants?"
