Sanding on the shore of a lake, I can't help but marvel at the tens or hundreds of thousands of small rocks that surround my boots. They were all created from hard surfaces, their edges softening over time.

And I wonder, can we learn from a pile of rocks?

Even the tallest mountains have worn down; none are as tall as they were 1,000 years ago. And much like a rock, I' ve found my attitude has softened and my desire to better understand others has expanded with each trip around the sun.

Once I too was a sharp rock covered in point y edges. Today, after decades of the waters of life coursing over me, my edges are softer and more understanding. I'm less likely to judge and more interested in learning how we can exist together.

But I'm not a rock. I'm a human-being filled with all the drama built into my DNA.

Two years ago, while traveling in the Pacific Northwest, I watched a restaurant owner ask a guy to leave for not falling in line with the rules. Not forceful and net rude. On the door read a sign:"Please wear a mask before entering our restaurant. We don't like it either, but let's all do what we can." But the guy tried to argue about the note.

I sat watching, understanding both sides. I' ve been this guy before, using my youthful edges to chip away at the world. What I lost, however, was the ability to grow by looking through others' eyes, and thus the possibility of finding content and success.

You can fit more rounded rocks in a jar than those with sharp edges. The former look for ways to adjust and make room for others; the latter never give an inch to accommodate others. Time, like the waters rolling against once sharp stones, changes us by washing away our resistance to seeing the world from another's point of view.

I placed a rounded stone into my pocket. Mother Nature is holding class again.

REGISTRATION OPENS FOR STUDENT ROBOTICS 2024

We're excited to announce that registration for the 2024 season of Student Robotics is now open Based in the UK, Student Robotics challenges teams of 16 to 19 year-olds to design, build and program fully autonomous robots to compete in our annual competition. Teams will have just three months t engineer their creations. As well as supplying teams with a kit, which they can use as a framework f(their robot, we mentor(指导) the teams over this period. Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors,w provide all of this to our teams at no cost.

The competition cycle will start with a live streamed Kickstart event on our YouTube Channe During the event, the game and the structure of the competition will be announced and kits handed o to teams.

The competition will be held from September 30 to October 1, 2024, which will see the rob( compete through a league stage and a seeded knockout. As usual the prizes will recognise not only t teams which come top in the knockouts, but also those who are excellent in other ways.

Details of the game and prizes will be revealed at Kickstart. Details of the Kickstart a competition events will be published when they are available. We expect to confirm places towards end of August,2024.

The next day we pulled into the parking lot, and I stepped out of the car, wearing the questionable costume. I shrank inside myself, but Mom pulled me toward the makeup room. When the makeup was done, I looked at myself in the mirror. My jaw dropped. 

"Mom!I can't go onstage like this!"I cried. 

"Why not?"

"I'd be a laughing stock(笑柄)!"

"Riley, look around you!You're not the only one in an odd costume. "

"What if we just sneak out?No one will miss me. "I whispered. 

Mom's lips disappeared into a thin line, and I knew I had gone too far. "Riley, I'm going to watch you go out on that stage tonight. And that's the end of it. "Then mom disappeared into the audience. I sat there, alone and bored, as the play began and the curtain rose on.

Food waste, which has become a global issue, serves as a mirror that reflects various cultural and social issues in different countries. In the west, for instance, consumerism, the belief that it's good to use a lot of goods and services, is often to blame for food waste. Chinese people are well known for being hospitable and generous. Many even feel that they lose face if their guests have eaten all the food. On campus, a generation of single children is less aware of the food waste issue. Students nowadays are well protected by their families and hardly have any concept of how much toil (辛劳) others go through in order to provide them with the food they eat. 

There are 925 million hungry people in the world. They don't have enough food to eat. And farmers work very hard to grow the crops. It's also important that everyone thinks about how they can do their bit to reduce food waste. Recently a campaign against food waste launched on line in China might make you think twice about being so wasteful. 

The periodic table of elements is a common sight in classrooms，campus hallways and libraries. The mode periodic table arranges the elements by their atomic numbers and periodic properties（周期性）. Several scientists worked over a century to assemble the elements into this format. 

In 1789，French chemist Antoine Lavoisiertried grouping the elements as metals and nonmetals. Forty years later，German physicist Johann Wolfgang Dobereiner observed similarities in physical and chemical properties of certain elements. He arranged them in groups of three in increasing order of atomic weight and called them triads，observing that some properties of the middle element，such as atomic weight and density，approximated the average value of these properties in the other two in each triad. 

A breakthrough came with the pu blication of a revised list of elements and their atomic masses at the first international conference of chemistry in Karlsruhe，Germany，in 1860. They concluded hydrogen would be assigned the atomic weight of 1 and that the atomic weight of other elements would be decided by comparison with hydrogen. For example，carbon，being 12 times heavier than hydrogen，would have an atomic weight of 12. 

In 1869，Russian chemist Dmitri Mendeleev created the framework that became the moder periodic table，leaving gaps for elements that were yet to be discovered. Mendeleev predicted the properties of some undiscovered elements and gave them names such as"eka-aluminum"for an element with properties similar to aluminum. Later "eka-aluminum"was discovered as gallium. 

German chemist Lothar Meyer produced a version of the periodic table similar to Mendeleev's in 1870. He left gaps for undiscovered elements but never predicted their properties. The Royal Society of London awarded the Davy Medal in 1882 to both Mendeleev and Meyer. The later discovery of elements predicted by Mendeleev verified（证实）his predictions and his periodic table won universal recognition. In 1955 the 101st element was named mendelevium in his honor. 

On UNESCO website，it wrote，"The Periodic Table of Chemical Elements is more than just a guide or catalogue of the entire known atoms in the universe；it is essentially a window on the universe，helping to expand our understanding of the world around us. "

Imagine a school where students are taught by the best teachers in every subject, regardless of location. Imagine a school where students could go on safe field trips to the Amazon rainforest or Everest base camp. Well, such schools are already being built: in virtual(虚拟的)reality.

A recent report concluded that digital education could significantly improve the quality and equality of schooling systems. But if managed poorly, it could have the opposite effect, turning a digital divide into an educational one. There is growing evidence to suggest that is happening. In Mexico, only 24 percent of 15-year-old students in poor schools have access(使用)to a home computer for schoolwork compared with 87 percent in rich ones. 

Used properly, technology can be great for enabling self-motivated students to access learning resources and connect with fellow students and teachers all over the world, says Beeban Kidron, a member of the UK's Digital Futures Commission. The trouble is that Edtech is too often seen as a shiny new toy that will solve all problems and save money rather than being viewed as a different way to learn, she adds. 

The text from my son said it all: "Dad, there's an article you were born to write that the world is finally ready for: Bring Back the Handkerchief!" As my son knows, there's no "bring back" for me. For me, the handkerchief never left.

Point taken. But a handkerchief is more durable and has a far wider variety of uses. Can you grab the handle of a pot that's boiling over with a Kleenex? Or do you recall the cases of skinned knees and drippy noses that hankie wiped? In fact, my wife gave me several new handkerchiefs as gifts. Neither of us can count the number of times her eyes have welled up at a movie, or, as happens, she's needed to blow her nose. 

Yet not even my mother could have anticipated the hankie's new role as an Essential Public Health Appliance. All of us have learnt how hard it is to follow advice from medical experts about not touching your face. Here is an answer. Use your hankie. In case of emergency, your handkerchief can become a makeshift DIY mask that can be pulled over your lower face like a robber entering a bank. 

And it will certainly give me the chance to lift my chin and look at my adult children through one eye, asking in her good-hearted way, "What do you have to say now, smarty-pants?"
