18、阅读下面材料, 在空白处填入适当的内容(1个单词)或括号内单词的正确形式。
I've had my fair share of travelling around China, and a recent week-long trip to Guizhou was my first time to the province. It was true learning experience.
I tried looking up meaning of the name Guizhou in the dictionary advance, basically to have a reasonable idea of what is waiting for me. that was a hard task, so I asked from a Chinese colleague among a group of local and foreign (reporter) on the trip. From what she said, the province was named after a famous mountain called "Gui" and "zhou", which (simple) means province in Chinese.
Our trip began in Zunyi city, which enjoys great popularity among Chinese for the famous ‘Zunyi Conference'. Yet not much (know) about this famous conference in Africa and the western world even today, but obviously it was at this place China's first leader and Chairman was elected.
The following journey was mind blowing as I went on to explore Anshun, a place that never fails (attract) every visitor with its largest waterfall in Asia. I (dream) of this place for a long time and am more than thrilled to witness the breathtaking views, which leave first-time visitors like me (impress).

19、Some students get so nervous before a test. Sian Beilock, a professor at the University of Chicago in Illinois, has studied these highly anxious test-takers. The students start worrying about the results. And when they worry, it actually uses up attention and memory resources (资源).
Professor Beilock and another researcher, Gerardo Ramirez, have developed a possible solution. Just before an exam, highly anxious test-takers spend ten minutes writing about their worries about the test.
They gave them two short maths tests. After the first one, they asked the students to either sit quietly or write about their feelings about the upcoming second test.
Professor Beilock says those who sat quietly scored an average of 12% worse on the second test. Next, the researchers used younger students in a biology class. They told them before final exams either to write about their feelings or to think about things unrelated (不相关的) to the test. Professor Beilock says highly anxious students who did the writing got an average grade of B+, compared to a B- for those who did not.
"What we showed is that for students who are highly test-anxious, who'd done our writing intervention (干预), all of a sudden there was no relationship between test anxiety and performance. "
But what if students do not have a chance to write about their fears immediately before an exam?
A. They were performing just as well as their classmates who don't normally get nervous in these tests.
B. Researchers asked students to direct their attention from the test.
C. The researchers tested the idea on a group of twenty anxious college students.
D. But the students who had written about their fears improved their performance by an average of 5%.
E. They do poorly even if they know the material.
F. It doesn't matter where we write about our worries before an exam.
G. Professor Beilock says students can try it themselves at home r in the library.

20、The thought of low material need and being unwilling to work, marry and have children, is described as a "lying down" lifestyle recently. It creates an emotional reaction among many young Chinese who are eager to take pause to breathe in this fast-paced and highly competitive society.
Many young people complained to the Global Times that duties, including work stress, family argument and financial pressure, have pushed them "against the wall". They said they hate the "involution (内卷)", joking that they would rather give up some of what they have than get stuck in an endless competition against peers(同龄人).
"Instead of always following the ‘good quality' of struggle and sacrifice to bear the stresses, they prefer a temporary(暂时的) lying down as release and adjustment," said an expert. "It is no wonder that some young people, under the growing pressures from child-raising to paying the mortgage (按揭) today, would try to live in a simple way and leave the worries behind."
Interestingly, the majority of young people, who claim to be big fans of the lying down philosophy, admit that they only accept a temporary lying down as a short rest. It is true that with the great improvement of living conditions, some Chinese youth have partially lost the spirit of hardship and are not willing to bear too much hard work. But in fact, lying down is not entirely comfortable. Young people who lie down always feel ashamed about their constant loss of morale (士气).
"Young people have both ambition and confusion about their future, but most of us have refused to waste opportunities and challenges," a postgraduate student told the Global Times. "It's no use running away. I have to ‘stand up' and face the reality sooner or later."
