• 1、About 300 to 350 million people worldwide are affected by colorblindness, a condition that makes it difficult to separate between certain color degrees. In nature, this means flowers, insects and animals may appear to be less vibrant (鲜艳的).

Virginia wants to change that. Crews have fixed special viewfinders at all 43 Virginia state parks so that more visitors can experience a world of vibrant colors. The viewfinders are designed for people with red-green colorblindness, which is the most common form of the condition. Subtypes of red-green colorblindness exist, but they all affect how people notice shades with reds and greens in them.

Created by SeeCoast Manufacturing, the viewfinders are equipped with special lenses (镜头) made by EnChroma that help people with red-green colorblindness distinguish between color degrees. Similar to binoculars (双筒望远镜), the viewfinders also enlarged whatever's in view.

In Virginia, the project started last summer at Natural Tunnel State Park, located near the far western tip of the state. Natural Tunnel State Park fixed a viewfinder at an overlook that offers a 360-degree view of the surrounding scenery. That first viewfinder was such a big hit that the state decided to bring them to the rest of Virginia's state parks. Funding for the project came from donations made by visitors through the "Round-up for Parks" program.

"The colorblind-friendly viewfinders aren't the only way Virginia is making its parks more accessible. This summer, Natural Bridge State Park also began offering a free mobile app designed for people who are blind or visually damaged," reports WFXR's Thad Randasso. The app provides audio instructions in 26 languages to help users find direction in the park, and also provides real-time audio descriptions of the user's surroundings.

  • 2、I used to believe courtesy was a thing of the past. Very seldom have I met a courteous human being in this modern era of the so-called Generation X.

Recently, I had to change my thinking, when I came face to face with just such a human being. I had gone to a fashionable coffee place, with two of my grown-up daughters. The place was crowded with the usual loud crowd and we had to climb a steep flight of stairs in order to find an empty table. After enjoying coffee and snacks, we were walking down the steep stairs, where the narrow space made climbing down only possible in a single file, with hardly any space for another person to either climb up or come down.

Just as I was in the middle of the staircase, a gentleman entered the main entrance of the restaurant which was right in front of the staircase. I was sure I would be pushed roughly by this man who would want to go up in a hurry. I kept coming down as fast as I could, holding on to the banister (扶手), in spite of my advanced years. My daughters were already down, looking up at me worriedly, hoping I would reach them before the stranger started up the stairs, knowing I was a nervous sort.

Nearly reaching them, I noticed the man still standing near the door. I reached my daughters and passed the stranger at the entrance door which he kept holding open. I looked back thinking he was still at the door, deciding whether to go in or find another less crowded place. I saw him going up the stairs, two at a time. I told my daughters about it and all three of us felt bad that we did not even thank the courteous gentleman who was actually holding the door open for us ladies to pass through.

We admired his kindness for both, waiting for us to come down before going up himself and also holding the main entrance door open for us to go out. To date, I still remember this gentleman and pray to God to make more human beings like him.

A、The author was a lady in her early thirties. B、The author tended to feel nervous in some stressful situations. C、The man probably knew one of the author's daughters. D、The man was unsure whether to go in the café or not.
(4)、Which of the following might be the best title for this passage?

  • 19、One of the things children and parents may worry about at the start of the new school year is making friends. This could be true for children starting or changing schools or simply going back to a new year with different class arrangements.

    Help your child build confidence.

Some children find it harder to make friends than others. If your child is shy, they may find it hard to meet new people. You don't have to make ten best friends all at once! Making friends takes time and even just one or two good friends can make a big difference.

Research shows it's important for parents to offer encouragement and guidance about friendships. This can lead to better quality friendships as children grow up. Parents can start to talk to their child about the importance of friendships from a young age.

    Encourage your child to talk.

Younger children view friends as somebody you can play with, while older children see friends as people they can trust and can share feelings and thoughts with. Research shows, parents can also help this transition (转变) with advice and encouragement. Encourage your child to express their feelings and talk about what happens at school, so you can work out things together.

    Encourage active listening.

You can also encourage your child to be a good and supportive friend. This is about understanding what someone is saying, not simply "hearing" what is said. You can suggest your child takes a deep breath and lets the other child finish what they are trying to say, instead of interrupting (打断) and talking over people.

    A. Listen carefully to your child.

    B. Let them know it is OK to start small.

    C. Talk about the importance of friendship.

    D. One way to do this is by being an active listener.

    E. How can you make friends in a new environment?

    F. How can parents talk to their kids about making friends?

    G. Over time, children's understanding of friendships changes.

  • 20、Slang (俚语) words are specific words or phrases that have a cultural meaning that is different from the basic meaning. For example, when you "keep your cool", you are not talking about the temperature. You are saying that you will stay calm under pressure.

Cool slang changes all the time. Some slang examples, like "what's up?", have been around so long that they have become idioms (习语), or common expressions where the meaning of certain word combinations (组合) are really different from their basic meaning. An example of an idiom is "out of the blue" to show something that happened without warning.

Other slang words are popular, or come from new music, TV, or movies, and are only used for a short time. Knowing how and when to use slang words or college slang will help you connect with and better understand American students.

As a general rule, you can use popular words and phrases now with your friends and classmates, but should use more formal English when speaking to professors and co-workers. If you use today's slang in more formal settings, like at work, people might see you as rude (粗鲁的) or unprofessional.

Pop culture and youth culture tend to create new slang words and trends (趋势). Historically, that meant that the TV shows, pop and hip-hop music, movies, and video games popular with kids, teens, and young adults influenced today's slang. While those forms of media still shape new slang words and cool slang, young people now tend to spend more time online — and with that change, the Internet, and especially social media, drive most of American slang in 2025.

While the Internet and pop culture have created common slang words around the country, keep in mind that different areas of the country may use different slang words. Wherever you decide to study, you'll quickly hear the local slang — and it may even become part of your own vocabulary!

(1)、Why is slang said to help students connect?
A、It shows respect. B、It breaks language walls. C、It sounds funny. D、It follows grammar rules.
(2)、What could happen if you use slang the wrong way?
A、It can show language skills. B、It may confuse friends. C、It helps people build trust. D、It could seem impolite.
(3)、What can we know about slang usage across different places?
A、It varies by location. B、It's only used online. C、It's hard to learn. D、It remains unchanged over time.
(4)、What is the best title for the text?
A、The History of American Slang B、Slang: Cultural Meaning and Modern Trends C、How to Use Slang Correctly in Formal Settings D、The Differences Between Slang and Idioms
