Did you grow up in one culture, your parents came from another, and you are now living in a (total) different country? If so, then you are a third-culture kid.
The term "third—culture kid" (use) in the 1960s for the first time by Dr. Ruth. She first came across this phenomenon while (research) North American children living in India. In general, third-culture kids benefit from (they) intercultural experience and they often reach excellent academic results.
Yet many (difficulty) may arise from this phenomenon. Third-culture kids may not be able to adapt themselves completely their new surroundings. Also, they often find it hard (develop) new friendship. Additionally, for a third-culture kid, it is often easier to move to a new country to return to his homeland. For example, after living in Australia for many years, Louis finally returned to the country she was born. She didn't know anything about current TV shows fashion trends. And she didn't share the same values as other teens of her age.

4、Sammie Vance approached her principal at Haley Elementary with the idea of installing "buddy benches" into her school playground to help others feel less lonely. The principal1 of the idea. But wooden benches are2. Just one would be worth nearly a thousand dollars. However, a bench made of3 bottle caps would only be around $250. So Sammie4 others in her community to collect enough caps to make one bench.5, she managed to get bottle caps from 50 states. And thus, the initiative of "Sammie's Buddy Bench Project" was6.
Pretty soon, Sammie's Buddy Bench Project began commanding the7 of several news media. For her amazing efforts, Sammie has been chosen the receiver of several8 and was9 one of People magazine's "Girls Changing the World". And10, more than 200 bottle cap buddy benches have been around at schools and parks across the country, plus Mexico and Australia.
This is, of course, not just a beautiful story about helping others. It's also a major win for11. It is reported that 1.3 billion bottle caps are used each year. These caps cannot be recycled in the same way along with plastic bottles12 each has a different melting point, and when they are13 in, it can ruin an entire batch (一批). And that's when they get discarded. Millions of caps have been found in our14 alone, which can be devastating to marine life. In fact, it's one of the leading15 of death. It's big caring hearts like Sammie's that help our planet heal against damage.

5、Imagine that you've just experienced something unpleasant-your friend has forgotten your birthday, you've been rejected for a new job, or you've just woken up after a long holiday and remembered you need to go to work. How would you typically respond to those feelings?
You might try to tell yourself that it doesn't matter, and not to let it get to you. This tendency could be described as "mood shame": The belief that having bad feelings is a personal failing.
Continually looking on the bright side of life might seem strong, even courageous. While it's natural that we might prefer to avoid uncomfortable feelings like disappointment, worry, anger, or sadness, a recent psychological research supports the idea that they serve useful purposes in our lives. By learning to see that value and accept those feelings without judgment, we may enjoy better physical and mental health.
Consider anxiety. We may assume that anxious feelings destroy our concentration and reduce our performance on difficult tasks—that we can only succeed in an exam or an interview if we learn to relax. Alternatively, we can see the feeling as a source of energy. Besides, disappointment may make us feel unpleasant-but you could recognize that the emotion helps us to learn from our mistakes. And by assigning a more positive meaning to the feeling and acknowledging its potential uses—rather than feeling it is somehow unhealthy—you might change the brain and the body's responses to an upset.
Rather than judging yourself toughly for bad feelings, you might lean into that bad mood, and allow yourself the self-care you need to get through it. Without fighting the emotions themselves, you could start to question whether those feelings have value. Perhaps they'll help you to identify an important change in your life.

6、For his eleventh birthday, Lin was given a gift that would shape his life. On that day his father took him to the Children's Activity Centre and said he could choose any course that interested him. There was just one requirement: Lin would have to promise to study it for at least one year.
To that point Lin had had many hobbies, but none kept his interest for more than a week or two. His mum once gave him a bag of stamps to encourage stamp collecting. That hobby lasted a week. Then his father got him some paints hoping that Lin's artistic side would shine through. Those paints were now under his bed, still unopened. This time Lin's parents would let him decide.
Lin's eyes moved down the noticeboard that listed all the courses on offer. He stopped at "Photography". He liked the idea of taking beautiful pictures but the notice said that each student needed their own camera. Although Lin's family weren't poor, they weren't rich either, and a camera cost a lot of money. He continued looking.
The next course to catch his eye was "Language Art". He didn't even know what that meant. His father explained that it taught people how to make public speeches. Lin, a shy boy, could think of nothing worse.
Then he saw it. "Cooking" sounded like something he'd like to do. It was inexpensive and convenient, it could be done alone and it was also creative.
Based on Lin's hobby history, his dad had doubts, but he agreed. Much to his parents' surprise, Lin kept his promise. He studied cooking at the Centre every Saturday, and practised at home, making delicious meals for his family. Everyone looked forward to birthdays, when they could eat his cakes. Lin got great satisfaction from the pleasure his food brought to others.
The months turned to years but his hobby never changed again.
Now Lin is an adult and runs a successful restaurant. When customers say they enjoy his meal, he still gets the same pleasure he did as a child, and remembers the special gift he received all those years ago.

11、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之成为一篇完整的短文。
Bob's grandma, Alice, lived with him and his parents in the biggest community in their city. The community had more than 30 apartment buildings, with crisscrossing roads and similar-looking houses. If you didn't live there for long, it was really hard to find a specific building. Luckily, Alice had moved there three years before, so she was quite familiar with the environment and could walk around freely.
One noon, Bob found his grandma busy cleaning the house. She was sweeping the floor carefully, even though the floor was already spotless. Bob felt a little strange, because he clearly remembered that his grandma had cleaned every corner of the house that morning before he went to school. He walked over and said, "Grandma, you cleaned the house this morning. You don't need to do it again." Alice stopped for a moment, looked at Bob in confusion, and then said slowly, "Did I? I forgot it completely."
Bob's heart sank. He had heard from his teacher that forgetting things easily might be a sign of dementia (痴呆). He didn't dare to think too much, but he paid more attention to his grandma after that. The next day, Bob told his parents about his worry. They were so anxious that they decided to take Alice to the hospital at once. After a careful examination, the doctor confirmed Bob's guess — Alice really had dementia. The doctor also warned them that staying at home all the time would make her condition worse.
In order to help Alice get better, the family made a plan: Alice would go for a walk in the community every afternoon. At first, Bob or his parents would accompany her, but soon Alice insisted on going alone, saying she knew the community well. To their relief, Alice could always come back on time within half an hour. However, this just lasted for two weeks.

13、阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
On April 20, 2026, we welcome Guyu, the last solar term of spring. This day is closely connected the legend of Cang Jie creating Chinese characters, carrying the double wisdom of Chinese civilization.
According to legend, Cang Jie was a (history) of the Yellow Emperor. (inspire) by the footprints of birds and beasts, he created Chinese characters were based on their shapes and forms. This ended the dark era of "recording events by tying knots". The Huainanzi records that "when writing (invent) by Cang Jie, heaven rained grain and ghosts cried at night". The great merit (功绩) of Cang Jie's character creation (deep) moved heaven, so grain fell like rain. The Yellow Emperor then named this day Guyu, (symbolize) the double good luck of the birth of writing and a bumper harvest of grain.
As farming solar term, Guyu means "rain brings hundreds of grains to grow" nourishing all living things. As a cultural node, it honors the (found) of Chinese characters and passes on civilization. Today, customs like worshipping Cang Jie and drinking Guyu tea still show respect for writing and farming. In the drizzling late spring, we can understand the deep meaning of "characters carry civilization, and rain benefits people's (life)".

14、Marco thought environmental protection was for politicians and scientists. Then his grandfather Old Tom took him to the Thompson River. "See that?" Tom pointed at plastic bags hanging from tree branches. "That's our1."
Marco shrugged. "It's not like we put them there." Tom didn't argue. He just handed Marco a trash bag. "2," he said. So Marco did. He pulled bottles from the mud. At first, he felt3. This was pointless — more trash would come tomorrow.
But Tom worked silently, filling bag after bag. By noon, they had collected seven bags. Marco's back ached, but something had shifted. "Why do you do this if it never4?" he asked.
Tom wiped his forehead. "Because the river doesn't need us to solve everything. It needs us to5." He pointed to ducks swimming through the cleaned area. "See how they move? That's their way of saying thank you."
Week after week, they returned. Some weekends, neighbors6. Other days, they worked alone. Marco stopped complaining. He started noticing small changes: clearer water, more fish. He learned that hope isn't a feeling — it's a7.
One afternoon, a girl from school saw him picking up trash. "That's so8," she laughed. Marco felt his face burn. But then he looked at the river and said, "Maybe. But someone has to."
To his surprise, she9 a bag and joined him. That day, Marco understood: change spreads not through lectures, but through10. By summer's end, a small group of teenagers had formed their own cleanup crew.
Marco no longer waits for someone else to fix things. He knows that every piece of trash removed is a small victory. And he knows that the river, in its own quiet way, is11. When he sits by the water now, he feels not pride, but peace. He has learned that12 nature isn't about grand gestures. It's about showing up, week after week, even when no one is13.
Old Tom passed away that winter. At his funeral, Marco stood by the river and scattered (撒) wildflower seeds." I'll keep14," he whispered. The river flowed on, carrying his promise15 the current.

15、Beat the heat — How to stay cool when temperatures soar
Maybe you're one of those people who peel off a sweater when everyone else is complaining that it's chilly. The point is, there's no single temperature that can be pinpointed (明确指出) as comfortable for everyone.
"What temperature people start to become uncomfortable at is really individual and variable," says S. Tony Wolf, PhD, assistant professor at the University of Georgia. It also relies on things like humidity and air flow. Plus, combinations of factors unique to individuals — age, gender, body mass, medical conditions and medications — affect how we experience temperature. And fortunately, there are many things we can do to stay comfortable in spite of the heat.
"Sweating is how we regulate heat," says Robert Kenefick, PhD, professor at the University of Massachusetts. "Drinking plain, cool water or fluids with electrolytes (like sports drinks) helps."
Choose clothing that's right — light fabrics, light colors — and loose. Loose clothing allows for better airflow and helps keep you cool.
Keep windows covered with shades, blinds or curtains. Think of how a car with closed windows heats up when left sitting in sunlight — it's called the greenhouse effect. The same thing can happen at home if uncovered windows trap sunlight and heat inside.
Keep a spray bottle handy. Spraying yourself with cool or cold water and then sitting or standing near a fan can help your body evaporate (蒸发) sweat and dissipate (消散) heat through your skin. "The more of your body surface areas that you cool, the better off you're going to be," says Wolf.
A. Drink plenty of water.
B. If you are really hot, take a cold bath or shower.
C. Use fans to keep the air constantly flowing indoors.
D. Go out earlier in the day when it's cooler or later at night.
E. But workout clothing made from new fabrics is also a good choice.
F. In fact, our perception of heat and cold doesn't just depend on the temperature.
G. Or maybe you're the person who's putting on a sweater when others say it's too hot.

16、On April 19, 2026, the 2026 Beijing Yizhuang Half Marathon & Humanoid Robot Half Marathon kicked off and concluded at the Beijing Economic and Technological Development Zone. Over 100 robot teams competed alongside 12,000 human runners, creating a unique "human-robot joint run" scene.
The "Lightning" robot from the Shenzhen Glory Sun Wukong Team won the championship with a net time of 50 minutes and 26 seconds. Surprisingly, this time even broke the human world record for the men's half marathon.
The race started at Kechuang 17th Street and ended at the South Gate of Nanhizi Park, covering a total distance of 21.0975 kilometers. The track featured more than ten types of complex terrain, including flat ground, slopes, and nearly 90-degree turns. It posed a severe test for the robots' environmental perception, dynamic balance, and endurance capabilities.
Over 100 humanoid robots started the race in a line, with a 30-second interval between each pair. They competed in two groups: autonomous navigation and remote control. The results were timed separately. Remote control group results were weighted by a factor of 1.2, while only four scenarios in the autonomous navigation group allowed human intervention. This fully highlighted the technical orientation of the event.
The "Lightning" robot stood out with its long-legged design and efficient liquid-cooled heat dissipation system. It maintained a stable and high speed throughout the race, with an instantaneous speed reaching 5.64 meters per second. The Thunder Lightning Team and Spark Team won the second and third places, with finish times of 50 minutes and 56 seconds, and 53 minutes and 1 second respectively. The Glory Team swept the top three, showing their strong technical strength.
Focusing on "promoting industrial development through competitions", the event promotes the technological development of humanoid robots from sports applications to practical use. It builds a benchmark platform for the global technological research and development and industrial application of humanoid robots.

17、In today's globalized world, plastic pollution has emerged as a major environmental concern. Every year, over 400 million tons of plastic are produced worldwide, much of which is designed for single use. The convenience of disposable packaging — for food, drinks, and consumer goods — has led to an enormous increase in waste. Although plastics are lightweight and flexible, these very properties make them difficult to collect and recycle efficiently.
The impact on the planet extends far beyond visual pollution. It is estimated that more than 8 million tons of plastic enter the oceans annually, affecting over 700 marine species. Seabirds, turtles, and fish often mistake plastic for food, which may lead to injury or death. Moreover, plastic debris breaks down into micro-plastics — tiny particles that can be absorbed by marine life and eventually enter the human food chain. Recent studies have detected micro-plastics in tap water, air, and even human bodies, although the long-term health effects remain uncertain.
In response, governments and organizations have launched many initiatives. Some nations have banned certain single-use plastics, such as straws or shopping bags. Others focus on boosting recycling rates or offering incentives (奖励) to companies that use biodegradable materials. However, these approaches face multiple hurdles. Recycling infrastructure is inadequate in many regions, and biodegradable plastics require specific conditions to decompose, which are not always available.
Experts stress the need for a combination of policy, technology, and individual action. Dr. Anna Carter, a marine biologist, points out that education and public awareness play a powerful role. "When people understand the consequences of daily choices," she says, "they are more likely to reduce unnecessary packaging, select reusable products, and participate in local clean-ups." Innovative companies are also investing in new materials — like plant-based plastics — which promise to be more eco-friendly in the long run.
Ultimately, solving plastic pollution requires collaboration between governments, industries, and citizens. While progress has been made, the challenge is ongoing. Dr. Carter insists, "Every effort, big or small, can spark change. It starts with everyone."
(1)、Why is plastic pollution a major concern?A、Plastic is cheap to produce. B、Plastic products are convenient to use. C、Plastic waste is increasing rapidly. D、Plastic is single-use and hard to recycle.(2)、How does the author show the impact of plastic pollution?A、By presenting experimental results. B、By presenting data and examples. C、By analyzing survey reports. D、By quoting findings from experts.(3)、The underlined word "hurdles" in Paragraph 3 probably means ________.A、difficulties B、requirements C、drawbacks D、changes(4)、What is the main purpose of the text?A、To present expert views on solutions. B、To highlight new materials for sustainability. C、To raise awareness and call for action. D、To report studies on plastic harm. -
