"Anybody have a bandage?" a voice rang down the dorm hallway.
It was our first week at college and we were all experiencing nervousness. I had forgotten to bring snacks for late nights but would never ask any of my roommates to share theirs. I was shy, always worried about fitting in a new situation and meeting people.
Several months before, I sat at my high school graduation party admiring my gifts and battling waves of post-high school sentimentality (多愁善感). Books were scattered around my feet. Laundry items, desk supplies — all well-intentioned and well-received. They would demonstrate their givers' thoughtfulness over and over during my college career.
But one gift struck me as strange. I frowned when I opened it. Medicine? A small packet of pills and creams, ointments and so on lay within the wrappings. Who would give that as a gift? I turned and Jenny, my best friend, grinned (露齿而笑).
"You'll need that once you're at school," She pointed out. "You won't have to chase down the campus nurse for every cough. Besides, that might bring you luck and chance." Hugging me tightly, she added.
Good point. She knew how anxious and frightened I felt about stepping onto a new journey, without her for company.
Not long after, in August, I packed my life into a borrowed truck and slipped the bag of medicine in with all my necessities. I hardly thought about it once I reached campus, caught in the whirlwind of unpacking, book-buying, scheduling, and meeting new people.
When "anybody have a bandage?" rang out in the dormitory hall that day, I remembered my little medicinal package.
I swallowed self-consciously. "Actually," I gave a little wave, "I have one."
"Great," the girl jumped off her bed and walked toward me.

Josefa Marin went to New York from Mexico in 1987, supporting her daughter back home with the $140 a week she earned at a sweater factory. With that small income, she had to collect recyclables, trading in cans for five cents each.
When the clothing factory closed down in the late 2000s, she became a full-time recycler, picking up cans and bottles to make ends meet.
Marin's story is not unique. Millions around the world make a living from picking through waste and reselling it — a vital role that keeps waste manageable. In New York City, the administrative department collects only about 28 percent of the cans that could be recycled. Rubbish collectors keep millions of additional recyclables out of landfills every year.
Yet collectors are ruled out by government policies. The United States Supreme Court in 1988 stated that household garbage is public property once it's on the street. That enables police to search rubbish for evidence, but that protection hasn't always been extended to recyclers. And in places like New York City, which is testing city-owned locked containers to hide garbage from rats, containers are made clearly inaccessible for collectors.
"There's value in the waste, and we feel that value should belong to the people, not the city or the corporations", says Ryan Castalia, director of a nonprofit recycling and community center in Brooklyn.
Recognized or not, waste pickers have long been treated with disrespect. Marin recalls an occasion when someone living next to a building where she was collecting cans threw water at her. "It doesn't mean I am less of a person than anyone else because I recycle", she says.

A new form of real estate is popping up along the beaches of South Africa, which are just big enough to fit a family of African penguins. Their unique selling point: a safe and cool place for penguins to breed (繁殖).
Historically, the penguins dug holes in layers of guano (鸟粪), but in the 19th century, traders started selling guano as fertilizer, leaving the penguins and their eggs increasingly exposed to predators (捕食者) and the burning sun. This has caused African penguin populations to decrease. That's why conservationists have come to the rescue with the African Penguin Nest Project (APNP), which aims to employ artificial nests to provide penguin parents a safe and shaded place to raise their chicks.
While guano trade petered out by the late 1800s, recreating the layers that accumulated over thousands of years isn't an option, because seabird populations have declined so much over time and it would take around 600 years to produce one usable guano layer. Hence, the project decided to build artificial nests. At first glance, they look fairly simple--a domed structure made from two molded shells of fabric coated in ceramic slurry (陶瓷浆料),with a small entrance measuring about 20 centimeters wide.
Getting the right temperature and dampness inside the nest was the toughest and most crucial part. The two-layer design and ventilation holes (通风孔) create an air conditioning effect, while the white paint reflects the sun, helping to maintain an interior temperature of less than 35 degrees Celsius.
The project started to use the nests in late 2018."Within a matter of minutes, penguins were running into them," says Graham, coordinator of APNP. "That tells you how desperate they are for any opportunity to find a safe place to nest. However, population recovery relies on more than merely giving African penguins a safe place to breed. It's not simply a case of ‘we give them a nest, the species are saved ‘. There has to be more."

Imagine sitting there sipping coffee when suddenly you see someone about to die. What would you do? On Dec. 26, Gelinne, 60, was staring out of his house in Edgewater, Maryland, at frozen Beards Creek when his daughter Aimee spotted the Piper Cherokee. "Look!" she cried. Gelinne looked up just in time to see a small aircraft a few hundred yards away, losing altitude.
As the plane disappeared behind the trees, Gelinne, a former Navy commander and current cybersecurity expert realized it was going to land in the creek (小溪). He flashed on a moment from more than 20 years earlier: Sept. 11, 2001. Gelinne was at work in the Pentago in Washington, D.C., when terrorists crashed a jet into the building. I don't even know if I could've gone right, but I went left," he recalled.
