1、Cesare Mencarini is a high school student. His focus was on math, chemistry and physics.
Cesare's mother is an architect and his father is an electronic engineer. As a child, Cesare became interested in electronics. He loved to experiment. He learned to program computers and equipment like the Arduino and Raspberry Pi. He also worked with a 3D printer.
After seeing a video about someone building a fusion reactor (核聚变反应堆), Cesare decided he would do something meaningful, too. The school wasn't so excited about the idea. But Cesare worked to persuade his teachers. Finally, after a complete safety review, and with an extra advisor offering to help out, the school agreed.
Cesare was a strong student, but his regular classes weren't teaching him how to build a fusion reactor. To learn this, he spent countless hours doing research, looking up information on the Internet, and watching videos. He would read, watch 10 or 15 videos, and then try to solve the problem. He also visited a website where he got advice from scientists with more experience.
Step by step, working long hours with his physics teacher and his advisor, Cesare built the reactor. Last June, at the very end of the school year, the reactor was finished. Over a year has passed since then. Cesare has continued to improve the reactor. He has built complicated equipment to control the pressure and to better see and understand what's going on inside the reactor.
He's one of the youngest students to have built such an advanced fusion reactor. But for Cesare, it wasn't just about the reactor. It was also about learning by doing, and about making connections with other people doing similar things. College is the next stop for Cesare — perhaps in England, perhaps in Italy. No matter where he goes, he'll probably continue to change people's ideas about how much young people can achieve.
(1)、What made Cesare determined to build a fusion reactor?A、His interest in videos. B、The inspiration from someone. C、His parents' influence. D、The support from his school.(2)、What do we say about Cesare from paragraph 4?A、He struggled to prepare for the reactor. B、He depended heavily on useful videos. C、He worked with experienced scientists. D、He had difficulty in getting information.(3)、What is Cesare expected to do in the future?A、Build another reactor. B、Learn new things through the Internet. C、Make greater progress. D、Go to a famous college.(4)、Which can be the best title for the text?A、Videos Act As A Teacher B、Cesare Became A Rising Star C、How To Put Theory Into Practice D、A Boy Successfully Built A Reactor -

The event that stands out in Tom's memory happened one morning when Tom was only ten years old. He was at home with his elder sister Jane. Tom was doing his homework when he heard raised voices. At first, he thought nothing of it since customers in the motorcycle shop directly below their flat often became loud, but he soon realized this time it was different.
"Quick! Quick! Remove the motorcycles from the shop." someone yelled.
Then a thick burning smell filled the air. When Tom opened the front door of their flat, a thick cloud of smoke greeted him. The motorcycle shop had caught fire and people were running and crying.
Jane, who had been playing the violin in her room, hurried to the living room. They rushed out of the door and along the corridor through the smoke.
They were heading towards the stairway at the far end of the corridor (走廊) when Jane suddenly stopped. She turned around and headed back the way they came. Tom had no idea what she was doing, but he followed her.
Jane had suddenly remembered the old lady in her 70s who lived next door to them, who they called Mary. Jane began banging on Mary's door, but got no answer. As the smoke thickened around then, Tom could see many of their neighbors — some still in their pajamas (睡衣) — running for safety. The thought of fear crossed his mind.
"She would have run for safety like everyone else!" cried Tom. However, Jane refused to give up.
"I know Mary's still inside." She said she was familiar with Mary's daily routine and was certain she would still be sleeping. She pounded against the door. "Go downstairs. Go now! Go!"

Weight loss is a hard topic. Lots of people aren't (satisfy) with their present weight, but most people aren't sure how to change it. You may want to look like the models or actors in magazines or on TV, those goals might not be healthy or realistic for you. Besides, no magical diet will make you look like someone else. So what should you do about your weight control?
Being healthy is really about being at a weight that is right for you. The best way to find out you are at a healthy weight is to talk to a doctor or dietitian (营养学家). They (compare) your weight with healthy standards and help you set goals.
If it turns out that you can benefit weight loss then you can follow a few of the simple suggestions (list) below to get started. Weight management is about long-term success. People lose weight quickly by crash (速成的) dieting or other extreme measures usually gain back all of the pounds they lost, because they haven't permanently changed their habits. Therefore, the best weight management ways are those that you can maintain for a lifetime.
Small changes are a lot (easy) to stick with than large ones. Try (reduce) the size of what you eat. Try giving up regular soda for a week. Once you have that done, start gradually introducing healthier foods and exercise into your life.
It's a good idea (maintain) a healthy weight because it's just that: healthy.

5、The Unlikely Friendship
In the heart of the city stood an old library, a place where time seemed to slow down. Among its many visitors was a young girl named Lily, who frequently spent her afternoons there,1 in the pages of books. One day, she noticed a man sitting quietly in a corner, surrounded by stacks of books. His name was Mr. Thompson, a retired professor who had a2 for literature and history.
Lily was attracted by the man's presence, but soon she found herself drawn to the same corner every day. Mr. Thompson,3 her curiosity, began to share stories from the books he was reading. Lily listened intently, fascinated by the tales of ancient civilizations and heroic deeds. Their conversations became a major part of her visits, and before long, a friendship began to grow.4 their age difference, they discovered that they shared a love for knowledge and a desire to understand the world. Mr. Thompson taught Lily about the5 of exploration and how it could open doors to new experiences.
As weeks turned into months, Lily's visits to the library became less6 due to school comments. Feeling the absence of their friend, Mr. Thompson decided to write her letters, sharing interesting facts and insights he7 in his readings. These letters became a source of comfort for Lily during8 times, reminding her of the joy that could be found in the pursuit of knowledge. She was surprised to find Mr. Thompson waiting for her with a9 gift — a first edition of one of her favorite books.10 by the gesture, Lily realized that their friendship had grown beyond the walls of the library. 7、Artificial intelligence becoming self-aware and exterminating (消灭) the human race is a common theme in science fiction. But the levels of high intelligence that AI could reach is a real concern among some scientists. But with more talk of AI and smart devices in the home, what are the positives of bringing these things into your life?
Hans Rosling, a professor of international health, once spoke about the impact and changes that the washing machine made. The once tough task of cleaning clothes by hand was taken on by a machine and freed up more time for other activities. There are so many smart devices that you can fill your home with. Imagine waking up to find a piping hot, freshly brewed cup of coffee, spotless floors that have been recently cleaned and the house set to the perfect temperature. With smart devices, these things can happen while you sleep. The potential to pre-program and automate parts of your life means that you can focus on other tasks in your life.
But there is a difference between smart devices and AI. Smart devices are the things that get on with the tasks, while AI can ‘think' or interact, and can be used to control the smart devices. There are many voice-activated AI systems which can control the smart devices around your home. You can ask these devices to start making coffee, dim the lights when they' re too bright or even make sure the house is secure. You can inquire as to the weather outside, ask them to play music or search the internet for you when you have a burning question about history or the latest cooking recipes. Some of these devices even have a sense of humour, and upon asking them certain questions, they will retort (反驳). In short, in some ways, they can act as company.
But how far will it go? Well, we already have self- driving cars and sentient tech that can automatically order the delivery of certain products to restock our fridge when we' re running low, but often in films and games we see humanoid robots taking over all of the domestic duties. It seems for now, that those things only live in our imaginations, but we could be seeing them sooner than we think.
(1)、What concerns some scientists about AI?A、It will reach high levels. B、It will retort when asked. C、It will take over the earth. D、It will live in imaginations.(2)、What is the difference between smart devices and AI?A、AI systems get on with tasks. B、Smart devices can control AI system. C、Smart devices can be controlled by voice. D、AI implies a level of thinking or interaction.(3)、What's the writer's attitude to the future of AI?A、Objective. B、Hopeful. C、Doubtful. D、Indifferent.(4)、What can be the best title for the passage?A、The Future of AI and Smart Devices B、The Wonders of Smart Devices and AI C、AI and Smart Devices: Changing Our Lives D、Benefits of AI and Smart Devices in Daily Life -
8、In a classroom in rural Kenya' s Rift Valley, a student, Priscilla Sitienei, takes notes alongside her fellow classmates. She wears the same school uniform. However, there is something different.
Sitienei is more than 80 years older than them. February 11 was Sitienei's ninety-ninth birthday. "The main reason for my returning to school was that I would like to become a doctor because I used to be a midwife," she said. She added that her children supported her decision.
Back in 2003, the government of the East African country began helping to pay for the cost of primary schooling. This has allowed some older members of society, who had missed out on education in their younger days, to go back to school.
This has given Sitienei more than an education. She has become a film star. Sitienei travelled to Paris last year for the launch of a film about her journey. It is titled Gogo, which means grandmother in her native Kalenjin language. She will also be heading to New York City soon for a showing of the film there.
Sitienei is in her sixth year of primary school. She said her aims were far more practical than becoming a movie star. She said, "I also enjoy school activities, including physical education classes. They keep me fit. I get to jump around, even though not as much as they do, but I at least move my body. That is my joy."
Sitienei shares her wide experience and knowledge with the children. Her teachers also use her experience to keep the peace during lessons. Her class teacher, Leonida Talaam, said, "I use Sitienei to help control the class. And it works! When I go outside, the class remains silent."
(1)、Why does Sitienei go to school at such an old age?A、To inspire others. B、To return to society. C、To take up a new career. D、To help teachers control the class.(2)、Why will Sitienei go to New York City?A、Her movie will come out there. B、She wants to keep fit. C、She wants to meet her grandma. D、She wants to learn the native language.(3)、Which of the following best describes Sitienei?A、Dependent and friendly. B、Creative and warm-hearted. C、Honest and humorous. D、Energetic and ambitious.(4)、How does Sitienei help her teachers control the class?A、Speak loudly to keep order in class. B、Organize school activities to work out. C、Stop the students from going out. D、Inspire the students to obey the rules. -
9、William Lindesay, a famous Great Wall expert and conservationist, and his wife Wu Qi have traveled the globe by the back paths, providing their sons with a unique growing environment. Sun hats, backpacks and sneakers (运动鞋) — these are the day-to-day must-haves for the family.
Most of their trips seem far from relaxing — cultural study in the hot and dry desert, a 53-kilometer hiking tour of New Zealand, a one-day climb to three English mountaintops and a six- day train ride from Beijing to Moscow.
Many assume the family must be wealthy and can afford their global travel, but they are not. Lindesay says they just choose to spend money on travel and avoid pricey hotels and restaurants where possible. Lindesay mentions the trip to Moscow as an example. Instead of taking a taxi from the railway station to the hotel, they took the subway. "We crossed the city for saving money, communicated with local people, and saw they are people just like us, everywhere. We arrived at our destination feeling comfortable."
However, their journeys, which can last weeks or months, have sometimes been inconsistent with their children's schooling. Wu remembers once Lindesay let their elder son ask for leave so that they could go to New York for a 45-day lecture tour. Therefore the son missed his final exam. Things like that bother the family all the time.
Lindesay attaches great importance to learning out of the classroom, saying that children might score well on school tests, but traveling outside, in distant lands with different languages, cultures, and political structures, is the real test. "You can only get streetwise on the street. You can only get worldly-wise when seeing the world," he says.
(1)、How can we describe the Lindesays' trips?A、Pleasant. B、Relaxing C、Challenging. D、Dangerous.(2)、What does the underlined word "inconsistent" in paragraph 4 mean?A、Distinct. B、Apparent. C、Remarkable. D、Efficient.(3)、What problem does the family meet when traveling?A、They suffer from a tight budget. B、They miss some lessons and exams. C、They hold different educational ideas. D、They are faced with language barriers.(4)、Which statement may Lindesay agree with according to the last paragraph?A、Actions speak louder than words. B、Toughness is the best assistant of will. C、Man who travels far knows more. D、There is no royal road to learning. -
