Cesare's mother is an architect and his father is an electronic engineer. As a child, Cesare became interested in electronics. He loved to experiment. He learned to program computers and equipment like the Arduino and Raspberry Pi. He also worked with a 3D printer.

After seeing a video about someone building a fusion reactor (核聚变反应堆), Cesare decided he would do something meaningful, too. The school wasn't so excited about the idea. Cesare was a strong student, but his regular classes weren't teaching him how to build a fusion reactor. To learn this, he spent countless hours doing research, looking up information on the Internet, and watching videos. He would read, watch 10 or 15 videos, and then try to solve the problem. He also visited a website where he got advice from scientists with more experience.

Step by step, working long hours with his physics teacher and his advisor, Cesare built the reactor. Last June, at the very end of the school year, the reactor was finished. Over a year has passed since then. Cesare has continued to improve the reactor. He has built complicated equipment to control the pressure and to better see and understand what's going on inside the reactor.

He's one of the youngest students to have built such an advanced fusion reactor. But for Cesare, it wasn't just about the reactor. It was also about learning by doing, and about making connections with other people doing similar things. College is the next stop for Cesare — perhaps in England, perhaps in Italy. No matter where he goes, he'll probably continue to change people's ideas about how much young people can achieve.

The event that stands out in Tom's memory happened one morning when Tom was only ten years old. He was at home with his elder sister Jane. Tom was doing his homework when he heard raised voices. At first, he thought nothing of it since customers in the motorcycle shop directly below their flat often became loud, but he soon realized this time it was different.

"Quick! Quick! Remove the motorcycles from the shop." someone yelled.

Then a thick burning smell filled the air. When Tom opened the front door of their flat, a thick cloud of smoke greeted him. The motorcycle shop had caught fire and people were running and crying.

Jane, who had been playing the violin in her room, hurried to the living room. They rushed out of the door and along the corridor through the smoke.

They were heading towards the stairway at the far end of the corridor (走廊) when Jane suddenly stopped. She turned around and headed back the way they came. Tom had no idea what she was doing, but he followed her.

Jane had suddenly remembered the old lady in her 70s who lived next door to them, who they called Mary. Jane began banging on Mary's door, but got no answer. As the smoke thickened around then, Tom could see many of their neighbors — some still in their pajamas   (睡衣) — running for safety. The thought of fear crossed his mind.

"She would have run for safety like everyone else!" cried Tom. However, Jane refused to give up.

"I know Mary's still inside." She said she was familiar with Mary's daily routine and was certain she would still be sleeping. She pounded against the door. "Go downstairs. Go now! Go!"

But how far will it go? Well, we already have self- driving cars and sentient tech that can automatically order the delivery of certain products to restock our fridge when we' re running low, but often in films and games we see humanoid robots taking over all of the domestic duties. It seems for now, that those things only live in our imaginations, but we could be seeing them sooner than we think.

Sitienei is more than 80 years older than them. February 11 was Sitienei's ninety-ninth birthday. "The main reason for my returning to school was that I would like to become a doctor because I used to be a midwife," she said. She added that her children supported her decision.

Many assume the family must be wealthy and can afford their global travel, but they are not. Lindesay says they just choose to spend money on travel and avoid pricey hotels and restaurants where possible. Lindesay mentions the trip to Moscow as an example.
