Challenges are part of life and something we can all expect to encounter at one point or another during our lifetime. We handle challenges differently;some of us choose to face them head-on, while others flee in uncertainty. The following are simple methods and strategies we can all employ to overcome challenges more effectively.
Nike couldn't have said it any better with their slogan, "Just do it! "Some challenges require us to do just that. Grab the bull by its horns and have the courage to conquer it, no matter how unsure we might feel. Some challenges are urgent and require immediate attention, leaving us with no option but to go ahead full-steam.
Educate ourselves. The reason why some issues prove challenging for us is that we aren't familiar with them. The internet, books, forums, etc. , offer platforms where we can research and learn about our challenges to find strategies against them. Knowledge is definitely powerful and essential in conquering anything.
Be persistent. This is what is required to accomplish anything, especially when it comes to overcoming challenges. No matter how difficult our challenges might be, we must be willing to push through and try again and again until we achieve victory over them..
Ask for help. There are times when we can't go it alone and need others to help us conquer whatever challenges we face.Networking with like-minded individuals who can offer us support, suggestions, and solutions is useful in helping us overcome challenges.
A. Meet them head-on.
B. Adapt a different strategy.
C. It is said that two heads are better than one.
D. If we give up, we allow the challenges to conquer us instead.
E. Therefore, our knowledge and ability to conquer them is limited.
F. Whatever our positions, we all wish to conquer them and move on.
G. Some challenges can be overwhelming, making us question our ability to overcome them.

Pick up any packaged processed food, and there's a decent chance that one of its listed ingredients will be "natural flavor". The ingredient sounds good, particularly in contrast to "artificial flavor". But what exactly does natural flavor mean? It refers to extracts (提取物) got from natural sources like plants, meat or seafood. When consumers see "natural flavor" on a label, they are unlikely to assume that someone is squeezing the juice from oranges into their bottle. They know even though natural flavor must come from natural sources, it needn't all come from the plant or meat. For example, orange flavor might contain not only orange extract, but also extracts from bark and grass. Nor is the common belief true that ingredients extracted from nature are necessarily safer than something artificially made.
So if flavors like orange are needed, why not just use oranges? The answer comes down to "availability, cost and sustainability", according to flavor chemist Gary Reineccius of the University of Minnesota. "If you're going to use all your grapes on grape soda," Reineccius says, "you don't have any grapes for wine making; the products are going to be exorbitant; besides, what do you do with the by-products you create after you've squeezed all the juice out of the grape?"
Actually, while chemists make natural flavors by extracting chemicals from natural ingredients, artificial flavors are made by creating the same chemicals artificially. The reason why companies bother to use natural flavors rather than artificial flavors is simple: marketing. "Many of these products have health titles," says Platkin, professor from Hunter College. "Consumers may be talked to believe products with natural flavors are healthier, though they're nutritionally no different from those with artificial flavors. Natural flavors may involve more forest clear-cutting and carbon emissions from transport than flavors created in the lab."
Platkin suggests getting more transparent labeling on packaging that describes exactly what the natural or artificial flavors are, so consumers are not misled into buying one product over another because of "natural flavors". Reineccius also offers some simple guidance: "Don't buy anything because it says ‘natural flavors'. Buy it because you like it."
(1)、Which is a misunderstanding about the "natural flavor" juice according to paragraph 1?A、It comes from 100% original fruit. B、It is nothing but advertising tricks. C、It certainly contains extracts made in the lab. D、It is absolutely safer than juice with artificial flavors.(2)、What does the underlined word "exorbitant" in paragraph 2 probably mean?A、Popular. B、Expensive. C、Durable. D、Innovative.(3)、Why do companies use natural flavors in their products?A、To cut the costs. B、To promote the sales. C、To advocate a healthy diet. D、To avoid food safety issues.(4)、What can we conclude from the text?A、Gary and Platkin hold opposite perspectives. B、Natural flavors are more environmentally-friendly. C、Customers are misled for ignoring labels on packaging. D、Natural and artificial flavors are more alike than you think. -

Jorg Muller, an ecologist at the University of Würzburg, with his colleagues, proposes a way to measure the biodiversity—listen to the jungle by AI, in a paper published in Nature Communications.
The rainforests are very important and always alive with the sounds of animals, which is useful to ecologists. When it comes to measuring the biodiversity of a piece of land, listening out for animal caller is more effective than uncovering the bushes looking for tracks and paw prints. The latter analysis method is time-consuming, and it requires an expert pair of ears. Muller's idea was to apply the principle of smartphone apps which can identify the sounds of birds, bats and mammals to conservation work.
The researchers took recordings from across 43 sites in the rainforests. Some sites were relatively primitive, old-growth forests. Others were areas that had just been cleared for pasture(牧场) recently. And some other original forests had been cleared but then abandoned, allowing themselves to regrow. The various calls were identified by an expert, and then used to construct a list of the species present. As expected, the longer the land had been free from agricultural activity, the greater biodiversity it hosted. Then it was the computer's turn. "We found that the AI tools could identify the sounds as well as the experts," says Dr. Muller.
Of course, not everything in a rainforest makes a noise. Dr. Muller and his colleagues used light traps to catch night-flying insects, and DNA analysis to identify them. They found that the diversity of noisy animals was a reliable representative for the diversity of the quieter ones, too.
Besides measuring the biodiversity, the results are also expected to be applied to outside ecology departments. Under pressure from their customers, firms like L'Oreal, a make-up company, and Shell, an oil firm, have been spending money on forest restoration projects around the world. Dr. Muller hopes that an automated approach to checking on the results could help monitor such efforts, and give a standard way to measure whether they are working as well as their sponsors say.
(1)、Why does Muller propose to measure biodiversity with AI?A、To make a new conservation principle. B、To seek away fit for hot environments. C、To work more efficiently than manpower D、To study the rainforests more specifically.(2)、How was the identification work of AI tools on the 43 sites?A、It agreed with the work from experts.. B、It identified different types of raintarests. C、It recorded more sounds in the abandoned forests. D、It was used to restore the biodiversity for pasture.(3)、What does the author indicate in paragraph 4?A、DNA analysis is skeptical in the research. B、Quiet animals are as diverse as noisy ones. C、A rainforest is always full of various noises. D、AI technology is used to catch the insects.(4)、What can be inferred from the last paragraph?A、The research focuses on biodiversity only. B、L'Oreal and Shell develop monitoring apps. C、The research will assist in forest restoration. D、AI's help will attract some sponsors'investment. -

I loved the spelling bee(拼字比赛) so much that every afternoon after school, I would diligently train. However, little did I know that my opponent in the spelling bee would one day become a cherished friend.
On Friday morning, I woke up at 6:27. My usual waking time was 7:01, granting me an unexpected thirty-four extra minutes to study. As the best speller in my class, I was determined to win the Meadowbrook Middle School spelling bee and defeat my opponent, Nathan Fortescue.
Nathan was a devotee of science and math. He wasn't really a speller at heart; he was a mathematician. Nathan and I had nothing in common except being good spellers. Besides, he seemed to spell well without much effort.
I went to the kitchen and found Dad making breakfast. I told him about the spelling test and my anxiety. He quizzed me on some words, but they were easy for me. Then he asked, "How do you spell ‘argument'?" I confidently replied, "Easy, A-R-G-U-E-M-E-N-T," without a second thought.
Dad shook his head. I didn't believe him, so I checked the dictionary. When I came back,he said I should thank him because that word might be on the test.
As I shut the classroom door, a voice came from the back of the room. "You're looking a bit pale. I'm afraid you might not make it through the spelling bee," Nathan said with a smile as he closed a giant book with dancing numbers on its cover.
"I bet a literature word will knock you out in the first round," I replied.
Then Ms. Hawking entered the room, explaining the rules—one miss and you are out—and the spelling test began. After four intense rounds, only Nathan and I remained. "Olivia, your word is ‘algorithm'," Ms. Hawking announced. I had never heard that word before, but I spelt it: "A-L-G-O-R-Y-T-H-M."

When something goes wrong, do you tend to recover quickly or fall apart? Some might find it extremely difficult to cope with the barriers. Following are some strategies to help you handle a personal setback and get back on track to achieve your goal.
●Understand it's normal. Fewer than 20 percent of people succeed in reaching their goal on the first attempt. In other words it's not whether a challenge will happen, but it's when. .
●Don't deny it. Sometimes it can be difficult to identify a setback. The problem can be staring you right in the face, but you may deny there's any cause for alarm. This inability to acknowledge the problem doesn't mean you're stupid. It's just that denial can cloud your awareness of the issue. It's important to be open to the honest feedback.
● Stop and consider carefully what went wrong. The most common causes of a setback are personal worries, overconfidence, and poor coping skills. Take a look at any factor that may have contributed to the setback: where you were, who you were with, what you were thinking and feeling.
●Learn from it. Learn from your analysis of the setback, and adjust your plan to try to prevent similar things from happening next time. Each time you adapt your plan and put it into action again, you actually improve your chances of eventual success. .
Remind yourself that your setback is a slip instead of a fall. After adjusting, you can still make progress toward success again.
A. Don't take it seriously.
B. Analyze what happened.
C. Persist in pursuing your goals regardless of challenges.
D. Despite concerns, you may still refuse to acknowledge it.
E. You haven't lost all of the knowledge, skills, and support.
F. Thus, the key lies in managing setbacks effectively when they arise.
G. This is because you learn from each misstep to make your plan more effective.

Advances in generative artificial intelligence (AI) have enabled authentic-sounding speech synthesis (语音合成) to the point that a person can no longer distinguish whether they are talking to another human or a deepfake (深度伪造). If a person's own voice is "cloned" by a third party without their agreement, bad guys can use it to send any message they want.
Computer scientist and engineer Ning Zhang has developed a new method to prevent unauthorized speech synthesis before it takes place: a tool called AntiFake.
Traditional deepfake detection methods only work after the damage is done. However, AntiFake prevents voice data from being synthesized into an audio deepfake beforehand. This tool turns the tables on cybercriminals (网络罪犯) by using similar voice cloning techniques they employ, but for voice protection. The software complicates voice data extraction and feature identification crucial for voice synthesis. "We're using an opposite AI technique originally used by cybercriminals, but now we're using it against them," Zhang explained. "We slightly change the recorded audio, just enough to make it unusable for voice clone training while still sounding natural to humans."
Ben Zhao, a professor of computer science at University of Chicago, says that the software, like all digital security systems, will never provide complete protection. But, he adds that it can raise the bar and limit the attack to a smaller group of individuals with significant resources.
AntiFake can already protect shorter voice recordings against cloning. The creators of the tool believe that it could be extended to protect larger audio documents or music from misuse. But the methods and tools that are developed must be continuously adapted because cybercriminals will learn and grow with them.
(1)、What is the primary purpose of AntiFake?A、To improve the quality of synthetic speech. B、To clone voices without the owner's approval. C、To detect deepfakes after they have been created. D、To stop unapproved speech generation from happening.(2)、How does AntiFake differ from these traditional methods?A、It prevents audio deepfakes in advance. B、It cannot detect deepfakes until created. C、It only works on short voice recordings. D、It relies on human listeners to identify deepfakes.(3)、What can we infer from the last paragraph?A、Developers should focus on short voice recordings. B、The battle against deepfakes requires ongoing efforts. C、AntiFake is ineffective against advanced cloning techniques. D、AntiFake provides permanent solutions to the deepfake threat.(4)、What is the best title for the text?A、The Future of Voice Technology. B、A Method for Detecting AI Deepfakes. C、The Challenge of Telling Human Voices. D、A Tool to Keep AI from Stealing Your Voice. -

The summer of 2023 was the hottest ever recorded on Earth. Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from burning fossil fuels are the main causes behind climate change, and scientists say they must be controlled. But there's another greenhouse gas to deal with: methane. Tackling it may be the best bet for putting the brakes on rising temperatures in the short term. That's because it's relatively short-lived in the atmosphere—methane lasts about 12 years, while CO2 can stick around for hundreds of years.
We already have strategies for cutting methane emissions—fixing natural gas leaks (methane is the main component of natural gas), removing coal gradually (mining operations release methane), eating less meat and dairy products (cows burp lots of methane) and electrifying transportation and appliances. Implementing all existing strategies could slow global warming by 30 percent over the next decade, research has shown.
But some climate scientists, including Jackson, say we need to go further. Scientists want to develop ways to remove methane directly from the air. Most ideas are still in early research stages. The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine is currently studying these potential technologies, their state of readiness and possible risks, and what further research and funding are needed. Some of the approaches include re-engineering bacteria that are already good at eating methane and developing reactors in methane-rich places to chemically transform the gas.
"Methane is a sprint (短跑) and CO2 is a marathon," says Desirée Plata, a civil and environmental engineer at MIT. "While methane emissions are a significant contributor to climate change, carbon dioxide emissions remain the primary driver. Therefore, we must continue to pursue strategies to reduce CO2 emissions while also targeting methane reduction." For scientists focused on removing greenhouse gases, it's off to the races.
(1)、What is the best way to stop rising temperatures in the short term?A、Quitting burning fossil fuels. B、Dealing with methane emissions. C、Improving current research methods. D、Controlling carbon dioxide emissions.(2)、What is the possible result of carrying out existing strategies?A、Reducing the rate of global warming. B、Fixing natural gas leaks. C、Trapping methane in the atmosphere. D、Increasing the use of energy.(3)、What does the author imply in paragraph 3?A、The approaches are not fully developed. B、The current research progress is sufficient. C、Some approaches have been applied widely. D、Methane emissions can be removed completely.(4)、What is Desirée Plata's attitude towards the idea of removing methane?A、Indifferent. B、Negative. C、Neutral. D、Supportive. -

Candace Leslie Cima is a 75-year-old fashion and lifestyle influencer working to change the attitudes regarding aging for both her generation and the ones following hers.
Candace's video, sharing a comment on her style that says "You're 60. You shouldn't wear that", got 7.4 million views on social media. She is answering comments about her sleeveless shirt style choices with "I am 75, actually." In her mind, there is no stigma attached to being aging.
"I remember being on the checkout line at a supermarket and looking at the headlines on those magazines. They would always have headlines like How to look your best at 20, 30, and 40. Never did they mention 50, 60, and 70," she recalls in a video. In addition to her videos, Candace also has a blog where she speaks at length about aging and fashion. Candace explains that she wears a lot of sleeveless tops, and there is always someone who writes to her that women over 60 should not bare their arms. She has a whole article on her blog devoted to this sleeveless shirt style element, which is called Woman's Right to Bare Arms.
"So... you have some loose skin on your arms or some veins on your legs or age spots on your hand... Why is that a bad thing?" She makes a point, saying that it is we who decide whether it is a bad thing and whether we are ashamed of our natural aging process and let others make us feel less than we are.
After all, everyone ages, so we all as a society should normalize these changes and learn to see them positively.
For her, age is not just a number. It's a badge of honor to wear proudly. "The only way to change that view is that we, as older women, show them that aging is a gift, something to be embraced, valued and shared," she writes.
(1)、What does the underlined word "stigma" in paragraph 2 mean?A、Trouble. B、Worry. C、Shame. D、Difficulty.(2)、How does Candace respond to comments about her age?A、She uses the opportunity to promote positive aging. B、She ignores them and does not address them publicly. C、She gets upset and defends herself in an aggressive manner. D、She avoids wearing clothes that might draw attention to her age.(3)、Which words can best describe Candace?A、Caring and generous. B、Concerned and helpful. C、Confident and brave. D、Strange and fashionable.(4)、What message does Candace want to convey?A、Aging should be feared and hidden. Torrie Norwood was a girl student at Lakewood High School, which offered a life-saving course. Torrie was very interested and she was registered at the class. Instructor Erika Miller was a long-time and skilled teacher, who taught basic life support, CPR (心肺复苏), along with Heartsaver First Aid. Erika stressed that life-saving skills were very important. To save a person's life, you must perform CPR within 4-6 minutes. "You never know when an emergency will occur," Erika said. "But you know what you should do at a crucial moment." When Torrie finished the course last Friday, she was glad to earn her certification.
The next day Torrie and her three classmates had just spent a typical Saturday night out when they decided to head home. As they drove back to their hometown of St. Petersburg, Florida, a speeding pickup truck crashed into them. Then the screaming started. "It's gonna blow!" yelled the gathering crowd as the pickup truck went up in smoke.
Torrie's door wouldn't open, but her window had been knocked out during the crash, so she was forced to climb through her window to get out. Two of her classmates, both unhurt, were also able to free themselves from the vehicle.
But when Torrie turned around, she didn't see Simmons running with them. Torrie realized that her friend Simmons was still in the car. Torrie had to run back to the car as fast as she could. She was still in there—unresponsive in the back seat. There was glass and blood everywhere. Things didn't look good.
Simmons had hit her head on a rear passenger window. The great force resulted in life-threatening injuries. After pulling Simmons out from the car quickly, Torrie gently laid her on the ground and checked her vital signs, unable to detect a pulse (脉搏).

Emerging evidence in humans suggests a (typical) Western high-fat, high-sugar junk food diet can quickly weaken your brain's appetite control.
After offering volunteers a week-long binge (大吃大喝) of waffles, milkshakes and similarly rich foods, researchers in Australia found young and health y ones scored worse on memory tests and experienced a (great) desire to eat junk food, even when they were already full.
The findings suggest something is special in the hippocampus(海马体)-a region of the brain supports memory and helps to regulate appetite. When we are full, the hippocampus is thought to quieten down our memories of delicious food, thereby (reduce) our appetite. When it's interrupted, control can be seriously damaged. Over the years, extensive research on (mouse) has found the function of the hippocampus is very sensitive to junk food, but recently this has been observed only in young and healthy humans.
In 2017, after a week of Western-style breakfasts of (toast) sandwiches and milkshakes, researchers found participants performed worse on learning and memory tests which are typically dependent the hippocampus.
Now, in this latest study the scientists of the team (find) that not only do such high-fat , high-sugar diets impair memory in humans, but they appear to directly affect our ability (control) our appetite.

They said, "Each member has a good time, and we are in tune (协调) with each other, and we have a great 11 of team spirit, believe in our 12 , and run the operation without a formal leader in the middle of things. We have a ‘shared' philosophy."
Their hard work and effort paid off as they became known as "the stars" of the company. They were described as "13 " compared to other 156 teams. They were motivated by the positive attention, and the 14 that went along with being the best.
It is clear that this team developed to compete for the goal instead of against each other. This team has stayed 15 and self-directed because of being allowed to become more than their "individual selves".

We've all been there—you've sent a message and it's marked "read", but you haven't heard anything back. What's the deal? While being left on read (已读不回) can be confusing, it's also pretty common. Here are a few tips.
Expect the best. Remind yourself that the person is probably just busy. Ask yourself if you actually know their schedule. There could be some time commitments you aren't aware of. Here are a few other reasons for a delayed response. They put their phone away to focus on work or school. They accidentally forgot to reply. Maybe they thought about what they wanted to say but didn't actually text it.
Resist the temptation (诱惑) to double-text. If you send a lot of follow-up texts, it'll be hard for them to keep up and they might get stressed. Leave them with just one text to catch up on—the other person will probably appreciate your patience.
Read over your previous messages. See if there are any confusing texts that you need to clarify. It's okay if you review your message again and notice that it might have been a little unclear—it happens!
Keep it out of sight and get some peace of mind. Don't let it upset or confuse you. If you get your mind off any notifications, you'll be able to brainstorm new ways to spend your time.
A. Put your phone away.
B. Fix your attention closely on text responses.
C. Give them a little space so they have a chance to reply.
D. They want to give you a longer response but can't right now.
E. Ask yourself why being left on "read" frustrates or confuses you.
F. You can keep the situation from bothering you until you hear back.
G. You might feel relieved when you find something that is easy to misread.

A humanoid robot can relay video and touch sensations to a person wearing a haptic (触觉内) feedback suit and a virtual reality (VR) headset hundreds of kilometres away, offering away for people to attend events without travelling.
The iCub 3 robot is a 52-kilogram, 125-centimetre-tall robot with 54 joints across its body. Its head contains two cameras where a human's eyes would be, and an Internet-connected computer where the brain would go. Along with the cameras, sensors covering its body send data to the robot's "brain". These sensations are then reproduced on a suit and VR headset worn by a remote human operator.
When the operators react to what they see and feel, the suit's sensors pick up the movements and the robot matches them. "The key is to translate every signal and bit of digital data that can be sent through the network." says Stefano Dafarra, who was part of the iCub3 team. There can be a small delay of up to 100 milliseconds to capture and transmit the visual shots, but the operator can case this by moving slightly slower than normal.
The team demonstrated the robot at the Venice Biennale, where it wandered through an exhibition while its operator stood 290 kilometres away in Genoa. Dafarra hopes people will use the iCub3 to attend events remotely, reducing the need to travel. "But at present, a fall could be hugely damaging to the robot, and it's uncertain whether it could stand up again on its own," he says.
"iCub3 is an interesting robot and offers clear advantages from the previous versions." says Jonathan Aitken, whose laboratory owns a prior version of the robot. However, he is disappointed that the team wasn't clear in its research about the data transmission requirements of the new version of the robot. "It would be good to know just how much data was required, and what the upper and lower bounds were." he says.
(1)、What's the principle behind the humanoid robot?A、It conveys sensations to the wearer and act s accordingly. B、It receives commands from an operator through the Internet. C、The cameras take pictures and then interact with the sensors. D、The computer in the robot processes the data and gives orders.(2)、Which aspect of life may the technology be applied to?A、Medical consultation. B、Sports events. C、Outdoor workouts. D、Virtual tourism.(3)、What can we infer about iCub 3 from the text?A、It fails to appeal to potential investors. B、Its performance hasn't been evaluated clearly. C、Its present version still requires to be updated. D、Its transmission of data came across technical problems.(4)、What is the best title for the text?A、Humanoid robots with sense of touch catch on B、iCub 3 robot combines with VR to benefit more people C、Humanoid robots let people see and feel things remotely D、New advances in technology enable people to travel at work -

Imagine reading a story titled "The Constant Pursuit of Alcohol". You would likely expect a depressing story about a person abusing alcohol. Now imagine reading a story titled "The Constant Pursuit of Success". That would be an inspiring story, wouldn't it?
Though it isn't a conventional medical addiction, for many people, success has addictive properties. To a certain extent, praise stimulates the neurotransmitter dopamine (神经递质多巴胺), which is shown in all addictive behaviors. Therefore, success is also similar to alcohol addiction in its effects on human.
"Unhappy is he who depends on success to be happy," wrote Arex DiasRibeiro, a former Formula I race-car driver. "For such a person, the end of a successful career is the end of the line. His destiny (命运) is to die of bitterness or to search for more success in other careers and to go on living from success to success until he falls dead. In this case, there will not be life after success."
There is plenty you can do to retrain yourself to pursue happiness instead of success. The first step is an admission that successful as you are, were, or hope to be in your life and work, you are not going to find true happiness in your professional life. You'll find it in things that are deeply ordinary: enjoying a walk or a conversation with a loved one. The second step is to make up for any relationships you've compromised (妥协) in the name of success. The last step is to find the right measurement of success. If you measure yourself only by the rewards of money and power, you'll spend your life running on these and comparing yourself to others. I suggest the better measurements be faith, family, and friendship.
Success in and of itself is not a bad thing. It can bring fun and sweetness to life. But it becomes tyrannical (专横的) when it is a replacement for the relationships and love that should be at the center of our lives.
(1)、What can we learn from Paragraph 2?A、Success is determined by many factors. B、People can be greatly addictive to success. C、Success can be really attractive to humans. D、It's difficult to achieve great success in life.(2)、What can we learn from Alex Dias Ribeiro's words in Paragraph 3?A、It is not wise to end a successful career. B、Happiness is more important than success. C、Successful people usually live a boring life. D、Success may not be the source of happiness.(3)、What is the right measurement of success according to the author?A、To take on a highly-paid job. B、To hold a high social position. C、To focus on the true meaning of life. D、To find the right approach to success.(4)、What is the author's purpose in writing the text?A、To show us the importance of success. B、To suggest love is at the center of our life. C、To remind us not to overly pursue success. D、To share his experience in finding happiness.
