  • 2、How does it feel when you solve your problem by yourself? Things may not always go as planned, but being resourceful can help you stay calm and work your way out of tricky situations.

Being resourceful means finding smart and creative ways to solve a problem, using whatever resources you have at the time. They can also be anything else that's useful, such as information, advice or your own experience. It also means trusting your instincts, the ability you're born with, rather than through training and being confident about your ability to face challenges. A resourceful person is not the one getting cross or panicking when something goes wrong. They're thinking about how to solve the problem.

when we learn to problem solve for ourselves rather than immediately going to others for help, it can help to build our confidence, help us feel more independent, and feel better about making decisions. Being resourceful may not help you avoid problems, but thinking creatively about how you can deal with them will make you feel less stressed and more prepared next time. This can boost self-esteem, that is, how you feel about yourself.

When you're facing a challenge, try to focus on the actual problem rather than how you feel about it. Think about where and when it happened and what the causes are. Next, think up as many solutions to the problem as you can. Finally, review what has and hasn't worked, so you're equipped to deal with a situation next time.

And remember, if you have a tricky problem that you're unable to solve, then ask a trusted adult for help.

    A. You also learn what you're good at.

    B. Here is how you can be more resourceful.

    C. These may be practical things like pens and paper.

    D. No one is expected to solve all problems by themselves.

    E. Resourcefulness is a skill that's good for you in lots of ways.

    F. They can be famous mottos that always inspire us to move on.

    G. Weigh up what's good and bad about each one and choose the best.

  • 3、Insomnia (失眠) is a sleep disorder that affects about 10% of adults in the United States. It is characterized by difficulty with falling asleep, or waking up too early, at least three times per week for a period of three months or more. If you happen to struggle with insomnia, you can try a weighted metal chain blanket (金属链毯子), one that might sound a little strange but effective.

A team of researchers at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden conducted a study to determine whether a weighted metal chain blanket could improve insomnia symptoms (症状) compared to a light plastic chain blanket. Subjects were randomly given either a weighted metal chain blanket or a light plastic chain blanket, which were the same shape and size. Those who were provided with a weighted metal chain blanket first tried on an 8-kilogram blanket. If this was too heavy, a 6-kilogram blanket was then provided. Over a four-week period, their sleep was judged using surveys and a wrist-based device called an actigraph.

They found participants who used the weighted metal chain blanket reported that their insomnia symptoms dropped significantly, while those who had used the light plastic chain blanket did not experience such obvious improvements. Furthermore, anxiety symptoms decreased much more for those who used the weighted metal chain blanket than those who used the light plastic chain blanket.

The principle behind these blankets is that the pressure of the weight provides some value of treatment. It's almost like a baby's wrapping blanket that calms it as it sleeps. Weighted blankets can calm your nerves. Pressure from the blanket may contribute to nervous system responses that lower your heart rate and breathing when you're anxious. This can help you calm down and sleep. The pressure could also cause your brain to release a chemical called serotonin, which helps your mind and body calm down.

"While these findings are promising, more research is needed to support the effectiveness," says the lead researcher.

(1)、How does the author introduce the topic?

A、It monitors people's heart rate. B、It gives off comforting chemicals. C、Its pressure calms people down. D、Its material reduces people's anxiety.
(4)、Which word best describes the author's attitude to the research?
    A、Doubtful. B、Unclear. C、Objective. D、Supportive.
  • 4、These famous books tell exciting stories with deep meanings. Let's discover how they explore human nature and power!

The Importance of Being Earnest (Author: Oscar Wilde)

This comedic play by Oscar Wilde takes a sharp look at Victorian social values while following two men — Jack Worthing and Algernon Moncrieff — as they tell lies to bring some excitement to their lives. The Importance of Being Earnest was Wilde's final play, and some consider it his masterpiece.

A Raisin in the Sun (Author: Lorraine Hansberry)

The story follows the Youngers, a working-class black family living on the South Side of Chicago, who move to an all-white neighborhood and struggle with the unfair treatment. In 1959, Lorraine Hansberry became the first black playwright to get a play produced on Broadway.

    Frankenstein (Author: Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley)

The story was published in 1818 and introduced readers to Dr Victor Frankenstein, a scientist who brings to life a creature that he put together from the parts of the dead body. Although Dr Frankenstein is frightened by his creation and gives up the plan halfway, the creature manages to educate itself and then seeks a punishment on his creator. The novel explores humanity's desire for creation and the fear of the change it brings.

It all started when my four-year-old son's bloodwork (血样) showed something terrible. We had to do an MRI (核磁共振), and it was a truly worrying experience. The doctors explained that they would have to intubate (插管) my son to get the medical pictures they needed. When the day came, my little boy held me as nurses told me to lay my baby down on the bed. It was a hard day for a mother.

I could hardly see through my tears as the nurse sent my mother and me to the waiting room. The nurse explained it would take two hours. I was worried. I didn't want to sit in that waiting room. But how could I get through those next two hours? "I want to go shopping," I told my mom.

"Do you really need to buy something, honey?" my mother asked, and I just nodded as I walked toward the hospital gift shop. I just wanted to do something meaningful instead of sitting there worrying.

I walked up to the saleswoman, and explained my plan to the young lady, "My little boy is getting an MRI today. So I'm just waiting here for the next two hours. Would it be okay if I bought a lot of gifts and sent them upstairs to some children in the hospital?"

"Of course, we can send gifts upstairs," she said. "Who would you like to send them to?"

"Can you just give them to the nurses and let them give the gifts to the children who need them the most?" I replied. And she smiled and gave me a thumbs-up (赞赏).

  • 8、Do you ever get a sense that you could benefit from being an interesting person? Maybe you'd like to feel more connected to the people around you. While you won't be the life of every party, you do have the potential to develop more passionate relationships with other people and activities. Try the steps below to start on your own path to becoming an interesting person.

Figure out what being interesting means to you. What's interesting won't be the same for everybody. Knowing what you are interested in is essential to becoming capable of interacting with others in a way that might be seen as interesting.

Try out new activities to stretch your comfort zone. When you stretch your comfort zone, you get yourself out of a routine. You inject more excitement into your life. You meet new people. Be open to trying new activities so that you learn to be interesting.

Interact with people who you find interesting. Find people who have skills and interests that you admire. Remember that who you spend time with greatly affects how your personality and interests develop. Spheres (范围) of social influence, from your local community to your country, can affect you in some ways. Watching others who are interesting can be a great way to get you started in the right direction.

Learn to shake off disrespect from other people. Everyone has their own interests and manners of acting in the world. It will be impossible to make yourself seem interesting to everyone. Be happy with who you truly are. Accept that not everyone will find you interesting, or even necessarily like you.

    A. Write down a list of your interests.

    B. Find common interests with others.

    C. Prioritize the time you spend with them.

    D. Don't worry even if you're not interesting.

    E. Experiment with new activities that might interest you.

    F. Interesting people have a tendency to appeal to each other.

    G. This can, in turn, make you interesting to those who admire your unique self.

  • 9、Western wellness influencers suggest that sleeping on the floor could help lessen lower back pain. But is there evidence to support the accolade given to floor sleeping? It turns out that resting on the floor may offer advantages for certain people in certain conditions. Some medical experts say that lying flat on your back with your arms and legs extending out takes pressure off the back and can stretch it out. Cooler temperatures near the floor may improve sleep quality and overall comfort.

"But most experts today agree that sleeping on the floor isn't necessarily the best option for any type of back discomfort," says Peter G. Whang, a professor at the Yale School of Medicine. "The floor is board-straight, while our spine (脊柱) has physiologic curves (生理性弯曲)." One such curve leaves space between the lower back and the floor. Lacking support, this curve flattens out over time, which can result in back pain. Moreover, without cushioning (缓冲) to support the shoulders, the upper back is often supported too high, which can cause joint rigidity (僵硬). Worse still, a hard floor create s pressure points in places like your hips and heels, which can restrict blood flow to those areas and potentially damage soft tissue.

So how did our ancestors maintain healthy backs while dreaming on the dirt for thousands of years? According to Daniel Lieberman, a Harvard University professor, hunter-gatherers slept on the ground from early childhood and may have built up a tolerance to its ill effects, unlike present-day people who try it for the first time as adults. Also ancient people got more physical activity throughout the day, which may have helped prevent pain despite ground sleeping.

So, if your back is giving you nightmares, the real solution could be replacing your worn-out mattress (床垫) instead of sleeping on the floor. The average American's bed is 10 years old, equal to about three years of sleep time. "No furniture will sustain that type of weight and abuse," says Bert Jacobson, a kinesiology professor at Oklahoma State University, whose research suggests that a new, firmer mattress reduced back pain by 47% — 63%.

(1)、What does the underlined word "accolade" in Paragraph 1 mean?
    A、Credit. B、Complaint. C、Inspiration. D、Debate.
(2)、What helped our ancestors adapt to sleeping on the ground?
    A、Their shapes. B、Their fitness. C、Their lifestyle. D、Their living conditions.
(3)、Why does the author mention Bert Jacobson in the last paragraph?
A、To come up with a new topic. B、To present a significant finding. C、To recommend the use of mattresses. D、To make the author's advice convincing.
(4)、How is the text mainly organized?
A、By analyzing features of sleep. B、By comparing different opinions. C、By making a list of relevant findings. D、By citing science-backed viewpoints.
  • 10、Imagine looking through TikTok and seeing famous MrBeast pop up. He says he's giving away brand-new phones. "Click the link below to claim yours now!" Do you click? Maybe. It looks and sounds like MrBeast. But it's actually a deepfake — a false clip (片段) created by artificial intelligence (AI). Last October, this video tricked fans into sharing personal details. But a new tool, AntiFake, could help prevent such scams (欺诈).

An AI model can learn to imitate someone's voice based on about 30 seconds of speech. "It does this by creating something called an embedding. This is basically a series of numbers," says Zhiyuan Yu, a PhD student in computer science at Washington University, whose team built AntiFake.

People recognize voices by paying more attention to some frequencies of sound waves and less attention to other frequencies, but the AI model uses all frequencies to create good embeddings. AntiFake protects voice recordings by adding some noise to the frequencies people pay less attention to. That noise can mess up an AI model's ability to create a good embedding of the voice.

Yu's team picked 600 deepfake clips that fooled both human listeners and voice- authentication (语音认证) systems, and then added AntiFake protection to the 600 voice clips those deepfakes had been based on. Next, the scientists sent the protected files back through the five deepfake AI models. This time, over 95% of the new deepfake samples no longer tricked people or machines.

"This is an interesting and great new tool to defend against deepfakes," says Shimaa Ahmed, an expert who wasn't involved in building AntiFake. "However, if my voice is my job, I'd like to have my voice as it is."

"This is actually a problem we want to address in the future," Yu notes. Instead of adding noise, he thinks AntiFake could change the rhythm or tone of a voice. The voice would sound clear and unchanged to listeners. But it would contain carefully-hidden signals to trick deepfake AI models.

(1)、How does AntiFake help prevent deep lake voice scams?
A、By making AI models' embeddings damaged. B、By making voices sound noisy and annoying. C、By making voice recordings hard to imitate. D、By making voices difficult to identify and record.
(2)、What is Paragraph 4 intended to show about AntiFake?
A、Its development. B、Its effectiveness. C、Its special design. D、Its working principle.
(3)、What's Shimaa Ahmed's attitude to AntiFake?
    A、Objective. B、Disappointed. C、Positive. D、Unclear.
(4)、What does the text mainly talk about?
A、The role of AI models in scams. B、A new tool to prevent voice scams. C、Impacts of deepfake voice scams. D、An innovation for identifying voice scams.
  • 11、Our "Mommy and Me" time began two years ago. My next-door neighbor and fellow mother, Christie, and I were out in our front yards, watching seven children of age 6 and under ride the bikes up and down. "I wish I could take one of my children out alone," said Christie.

Then we worked out a plan: When Christie takes one of her children out, I'll watch her other three. And when she watches two of mine. I'll take someone out.

The children were extremely quick to accept the idea of "Mommy and Me" time. Christie's daughter, McKenzie, went first. When she returned, the other children showered her with tons of questions. McKenzie was smiling broadly. Christie looked refreshed and happy. "She's like a different child when there's no one else around," Christie shared with me quickly. With her mother all to herself, McKenzie didn't have to make an effort to gain attention.

Just as Christie had noticed changes in McKenzie, I also discovered something different in each of my children. For example, I am always surprised when my daughter, who is seldom close to me, holds my hand frequently. My stuttering (口吃的) son, Tom, doesn't stutter once during our activities since he doesn't have to struggle for a chance to speak. And another son, Sam, who's always a follower when around other children shines as a leader during our times together.

The "Mommy and Me" time allows us to be simply alone and away with each child-talking, sharing, and laughing, which has been the biggest gain. Every child deserves to be an only child at least once in a while.

(1)、What was the author and her neighbor's plan?
A、To teach their children how to stay alone. B、To change their own children's bad habits. C、To make a child live in the other home for a long time. D、To help each other spend some time with one child at a time.
(2)、How many children did the author have?
    A、Five. B、Four. C、Three. D、Two.
(3)、After going through the plant the author's sons became          .
    A、braver B、cleverer C、more active D、more selfless
(4)、What can we learn from the text?
A、Every child needs parents' full attention. B、Having brothers and sisters is fun. C、It's tiring to take care of others' children. D、Parents should look after others' children.
  • 12、Four Best National Parks in the World

    Kakadu National Park, Australia

Although the Blue Mountains is Australia's most visited national park, Kakadu is the largest and wins hands-down for natural beauty and historical importance. It covers over 20,000 square kilometres, with waterfalls pouring into natural pools, vast wetlands and wildlife-filled places. Kakadu's highlight is one of the highest concentrations of rock art sites anywhere in the world.

Best time to visit: June to October

    Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia

Croatia's first national park in 1949 and now one of the country's most popular attractions. Plitvice Lakes is a waterworld of pools with changing colors, pouring waterfalls and interconnected watercourses. The lakes sit on two levels, and the surrounding woodland is visited by brown bears, wolves and lynx, with various trees alive with rare birds.

Best time to visit: Summer greens, fall golds and winter snows make Plitvice an ever-changing year-round destination

    Vatnajokull National Park, Iceland

Here you'll find all the natural wonders that this island has become famous for— ice caves, waterfalls, and glaciers that can be hiked on. And most of these attractions can be accessed relatively easily off Iceland's Ring Road, four hours or so from Reykjavik. The Park was created in 2008 by joining together Jokulsargljufur and Skaftafell National Park to create a supersized area of over 12,000 square kilometres, making it the largest national park in Europe.

Best time to visit: Summer for hiking; winter for ice cave tours

I liked things going according to my plans. But lately there had been lots of troubles in my life. My daughter Gabby had a disease, making it difficult for me to focus on my job. One day, I went for a walk on the beach. It was something I'd been too busy to do before. As I slowly walked, looking at the blue sky and sea, my mood gradually lightened.

On my way home, I came across an art supply store. Attracted by the beautiful decorations, I walked inside. I hadn't painted since I was a child, and I had already forgotten what most of the tools were for. Therefore, I decided to leave after a while. Just then, a young man approached and asked whether I needed any help. I wanted to say no and get out of the store. But soon I changed my mind and replied, "I would like to paint, but I don't know what to buy."

"My dad is an artist. I can show you everything you need," the young man offered. He carefully picked out a set of paints and recommended brushes and other necessary things. "Have fun!" he added before I left. "I expect you to show me a painting the next time you come in here."

I smiled weakly. Not likely, I thought. Yet that night, after Gabby went to sleep, I set up the easel (画架) and the tools in the dining room and decided to give it a try. What should I paint? I closed my eyes. Suddenly, I could imagine the blueness of the sky connected with the deeper, darker shades (色调) of the sea. I took a deep breath and began to draw.

I kept painting for the next few weeks. Whenever I felt stressed, I painted, and then I could forget all my troubles. I used my phone to take pictures of my paintings, so I could carry that feeling of peace with me. One afternoon, when I ran out of canvases (画布), I returned to the store to get some more.

  • 18、The metaverse, a virtual universe that combines augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and the Internet, is rapidly transforming various industries, including the travel industry. The metaverse's ability to create immersive and interactive environments allows users to explore new destinations and cultures without leaving the comfort of their homes. This technological innovation has the potential to change the travel industry, providing opportunities for growth and sustainability in an increasingly digital world.

With the help of VR headsets and other devices, users can explore distant destinations and experience unique cultural events from their living rooms. This allows individuals who have physical disability to travel the world to engage with different cultures and environments. Moreover, virtual tourism can help address issues of overtourism, as it enables users to visit popular sites without contributing to overcrowding or environmental destruction.

Virtual tourism is able to provide immersive experiences. By using advanced technology, virtual reality developers can create realistic simulations (模拟) of various destinations, complete with sights, sounds, and even smells. These simulations can be tailored to individual preferences, allowing users to explore at their own pace and focus on the aspects of a destination that interest them most. What's more, virtual tourism can improve educational experiences, enabling users to learn about a location in an engaging and interactive manner.

  • 19、Cleaning your hands with soap and water washes away bacteria. But the hot-air hand dryers found in many public restrooms seem to blow microbes (微生物) right back onto clean skin. That's what 16-year-old Zita Nguyen found by swabbing (用拭子擦拭) people's freshly washed and dried hands.

Water going through toilets in public restrooms results in the bacteria from human wastes entering the air. That same air is drawn into those wall-mounted electric hand dryers. These machines provide a nice warm home in which microbes can grow well, and cleaning the inside of these machines can be difficult, Zita says. "Freshly washed hands are getting dirtied with the bacteria that grow inside these machines. " she adds.

The idea for her project came from the pandemic (流行病). People stayed at least one meter away from each other to limit the spread of the pandemic. Zita wanted to explore that idea with hand dryers. Would drying hands farther away from the hot-air dryer lessen the number of bacteria that fall back onto the skin?

The teen had four people wash and dry their hands in the restrooms. The participants washed with soap and water. After each washing, they dried their hands using one of three different methods. In some trials, they simply used paper towels. In the others, they used an electric hand dryer. Sometimes, they held their hands close to the machine, about 13 centimeters below it. At other times, they held their hands about 30 centimeters below the dryer. Each hand-drying condition was performed 20 times. Right after this drying, Zita swabbed their hands for bacteria. Then she placed these swabs on Petri dishes for three days in suitable growing conditions.

Afterward, all the Petri dishes were covered with bacteria. Fewer than 50 bacterial colonies (菌落), on average, turned up in each dish exposed to swabs from hands dried with paper towels or from hands held farther from the electric dryers. In contrast, more than 130 colonies, on average, grew in Petri dishes from hands held close to the hot-air dryers.

Zita was amazed by all the microbes in these dishes and realized they represented what covered people's hands after using a hot-air dryer.

(1)、What did Zita Nguyen discover in her research?
A、Public restrooms are full of bacteria in the air. B、Swabbing freshly washed hands is unnecessary. C、Hand dryers can infect clean hands with bacteria. D、Cleaning the inside of hot-air hand dryers is hard.
(2)、What was the inspiration for Zita's project?
A、Her concern over the damage of bacteria to skins. B、Safety distance for people during the pandemic. C、Her curiosity about the structure of hand dryers. D、The medicine of limiting the spread of the pandemic.
(3)、What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A、The process of conducting the experiment. B、The reason for hand-dryers having bacteria. C、The desire for better drying hands machines. D、The result of drying hands with paper towels.
(4)、The number of bacterial colonies in the dishes is related to ________.
A、the application of hand dryers B、the lasting time of swabbing hands C、the growing conditions for bacteria D、the functions of hot-air hand dryers
  • 20、In one apartment in Jos, Nigeria, Wuni Bitrus and a dozen students gathered around a table covered with a toolbox, a 12-volt adapter (适配器), and a mix of colored wires. The students' idea was to build a "smart" door that opens with the touch of a finger.

The students chatted in sign language, and Mr. Bitrus signed back. The group discusses using Arduino, an open-source electronics platform, and one student wondered how fingerprints could be stored. Mindful of Nigeria's electricity problems, Mr. Bitrus advised the group to use a battery-powered keypad lock system first and include a fingerprint feature later. After nodding in agreement, the students excitedly started working.

This is one typical scene in a club run by the Deaf Technology Foundation (DTF), a nonprofit co-founded by Mr. Bitrus. It coaches deaf Nigerian children and young adults in computer programming and robotics which are believed to maintain a rising trend in today's labor market. The students also work to improve their reading skills and receive career guidance.

Mr. Bitrus' desire to change Nigeria's deaf communities was awakened in 2014. While teaching, he noticed a 13-year-old girl was treated unfairly and he became determined to learn sign language. Three years later, he got funded by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and established DTF.

One of the darkest memories that Mercy Samson Grimah, a student of the foundation, has about growing up is looking at the faces of people around her. Ms. Grimah says her private secondary school did not formally teach sign language to her, nor much of anything else. But fortunately, she formed a bond with the Deaf Technology Foundation. "I had never touched a laptop before in my life," she says. Now, she wants to become a computer scientist.

So far, DTF has been struggling to keep the dreams of these students alive, as it can only afford two paid instructors and it is difficult to keep up with the growing number of students. DTF intends to take advantage of Nigeria's rapid tech development, joining hands with companies on self-driving car technology and automated wheelchairs to secure its existence.
